We were recently given a live brief from the agency that has been doing all of the Cycle Tour ads, they were stumped for ideas for the brief as they have been working on it since the tour started advertising, so they came to us for a fresh take on things.

One of the main topics covered in the briefing was a move away from cycling imagery and onto more conceptual imagery for the race as cycling pictures are generic and dont really say much about the race. Alas there was still quite a few people who used cycling imagery, i’m not sure why.

I decided to go for something completely different, thinking about what is present on race day and what isnt there. To start, there is no cars so road signs become irrelevant on race day, so we decided to spruce them up for this campaign and have them focused on race day things such as people having a large party down the road or stopping to enjoy the stunning view.

What is so nice about this campaign is it can actually be extended to real road signs used to promote the event or to be put up on race day to lift the moral of the cyclists.

Being a mountain biker myself, i thoroughly enjoyed this brief as working on a brief were your interests lie is truly the best!

Campaign Concept: Small changes make a big difference. (WWF Shift)

Our first real/live campaign of the year was off to a rocky start, targeting high school teenagers and trying to make caring about the environment cool – not the easiest of tasks! But alas, we proved we could pull it out of the bag!

Our concept revolves around the idea of everyone doing something small for the environment which in turn makes a big impact, whether it be showering for a few minutes less or recycling your glass or paper rather than just throwing it away, everyone can make a difference! We decided to base our campaign mainly online, where this target markets is most accessible. We would have posters up in schools, MXiT splash screens and radio spots all leading towards the Facebook page where the target market could interact and come up with different ways to save electricity, water etc. which would then be voted upon to see which one is best. After one has been chosen, an illustrator will illustrate a comic to show that particular way of saving water/electricity etc. and then that would be posted on the Facebook page. The person who’s idea it is then can tag all their friends in it and what not making them more popular! This would be an ongoing campaign, and a new comic would be released every week. At the end of the year, the person with the best idea, would then win a trip on a WWF excursion around the world.

After presenting to client, we are in the top 3, so we are waiting in anticipation of the final decision

This was an addition to the previous Olmeca DPS advert that I did, I wasnt quite sure how to upload a flash file, but I eventually got it working.

Basically, an add-on to the DPS campaign carrying on with the same illustrative style and giving the brand a character that solves all your problems, and always have a fun time with – Olmeca Tequila.

We were briefed to create a feel good advert for McDonalds – as a friend rather than a brand trying to get your attention with product promotions. This proved to be quite difficult at first, trying to promote a place that isnt really good for you, but we got the hang of it eventually. After conducting some extensive desk research, we found that there were quite a few brand adverts done for McDonalds, although none were flighted in SA, this jolted the creative levels on an international level, but we still didnt have anything that had that real local feel, so off to McDonalds we go. After sitting in McDonalds, and just watching, speaking and learning from customers and staff, we felt we had enough sustenance to create a cracker ad.

The advert that we came up with centers itself around a student road-trip, and the unique feeling it has and trying to push the fact that no matter what happens, who you are, or where you are, McDonalds is always there for you.

Client: Frankies Olde Soft Drink Company

Frankies soft drinks have been on the market for quite a while, although having kept a very low profile, they have just recently started distributing through Pick ‘n Pay, giving our lecturers a unique ‘underdog’ brand for our ambient advertising brief. the story of Frankies, is quite interesting, a couple wanting to get away from the hussle and bussle of the city retired to the slow life on a farm where they did the odd farming here and there, kept livestock and ran a guesthouse. After discovering his mothers secret recipe for ginger beer, the husband decided to relive his childhood and started creating this home-made ginger beer and selling it to guests on the farm. After many compliments, he decided to upscale and sell the ginger beer at the local market, and the rest is history. There is a gap in the market for a home-made, quality soft drink, and Frankies fits into this gap perfectly with their range of soft drinks.

We were briefed to create an ambient campaign for Frankies, were we had to come up with 3 different executions all revolving around one thought, we decided on ‘Slow down the pace of life’. This drink should remind you of the old days, how everything in life was slow paced, and things were refined to a standard not seen today.

Our executions revolved around ways of slowing down your life, but without getting in your way or becoming a nuisance.

• A speed bump, slows you down anyway and gives you just enough time to take in the advertising.
• A horse drawn carriage, a different way of seeing the city, this would travel to and from the V&A Waterfront from Seapoint Promenade.
• Loungers and couches, placed in the V&A Waterfront in shady spots for you to just sit down, relax and take in your surroundings rather than speed straight past them.
