Keyword research is one of the most important activities to any SEO campaign. There are several keyword research tools available on the market that are both free and paid, however all of these tools cannot tell you the type of keyword it is.

There are several articles online that talk about broad keywords and long tail keywords, but there are very few that talk about understanding the mentality of the user behind the word search.

There are 3 major types of keyword query’s that Google pays attention to and those are Informational, Navigational, and Transactional. When you attach these labels to your keywords you will then have a better understanding of how a user’s mindset is when they are actually performing the search.

One of the main goals in marketing is to give people what they want and this is Google’s mantra 100%. If a user searches within their search results and clicks on a result and goes to that page and hurries and clicks out, then Google takes notice. Lets start to identify these different types of search query’s to help us understand the users mindset.

Informational keywords are words that people use to find information on a particular subject or item. Navigational keywords are those that people use as they are trying to find companies. Transactional keywords are those that people use when they want to spend money.

Types of Informational Keywords:

Thanksgiving

Sailing

Grand Canyon

Types of Navigational Keywords:

Ebay

Walmart photo

Innovation Simple

Types of Transactional Keywords:

Salomon snowboard boots

Sony video camera

Nike basketball shoes

When you know how many informational keywords that you are going after it will help you that your information pages are the ones that people want to find. You can have both information on your site and products and your users will come through your site with different mindsets.

It is important to give your users what they want when they come to your site. If they are searching for information they do not want to blasted with products and prices. If your users want to buy something and are doing some comparison shopping then they do not want to see a bunch of text in front of them.

Optimize your site for all of the different types of keywords and you will get traffic from all types of users mindsets and mentality. Companies that understand their users mentality always win the game.

As time moves on the search engines are having to continually evolve. In the older days pagerank and anchor text used to be really high on the list of what a webpage needed to rank. Advancing algorithms are now taking in a lot more data to determine the importance and relevance of a webpage in order to put it at the top of the results for any keyword.

There have been some Google search engineers who have come out and said that it is not uncommon for Google to make over 400 adjustments to their algorithm in a year. Even if a person could keep track of what is being changed in the algorithm it would be hard for them to keep their site up to date with all of the changes.

Search is evolving and in a rare appearance by Udi Manber who is a search engineer that has worked with Amazon, Yahoo, and now Google gave a good interview on the evolution of search back in April of 2008. In that interview he answered questions about search, what he has seen, and what he expected then to change in search.

Google has to take in a lot of data in order to improve their algorithm and there are several factors that Google looks at besides pagerank.

Sampling of determining factors.

domain name and extension

domain age and location

domain history and infractions - spam penalties

sitewide authority

freshness of content - age of content - QDF model (query deserves freshness)

locality of website - TLD, hosting IP, content locality

user behavior - how users interact with website

intent of searcher - same query can mean something different in different locations

quality of links - link source

and many other factors

When you want to rank a page of a website in the Google serp’s there are a lot of factors taking place and so this type of information can be a little discouraging to some who want to rank pages high. The best advice is to follow Google’s mantra which is to provide the best user experience.

If you focus on your users and accurately label your documents to make it easier for the engine to understand what you are about and your users know what you are about then you will have great success. Overall the content creator should think about how a content user will search that content.

The web is evolving and so is the level of intelligence for internet users. Individuals can find things on the fly and now there are more sources to find things other than search engines. User Generated Content has inspired some of the best internet companies around including the infamous Youtube and Twitter, however it has also caused some major problems for search engines who are trying to crawl and index web content.

Real time search is still in its infancy and Twitter is the one who is moving this now web into existence. Although you can search on twitter for something that got posted only seconds earlier their search algorithm does not pull back recent conversations that might be relevant to what you are looking for, it only retrieves by freshness.

Both Google and Microsoft have made some strides in working with Twitter in providing real time search results as they continue to try and outdo each other. Google may have the upper hand when it comes to the relevancy issue as their algorithms are more complex in nature.

How does this real time search affect SEO and the industry? One of the main things SEO’s work on is building inbound links to a webpage in order to improve its popularity and this major part of seo goes completely out the window in real time search. There have been many questions about how the search engines will incorporate it, some say they might put it in the web results for the universal search while others say they should have a seperate engine.

As internet users we not only get to participate in the integration of searching and sharing we also get the opportunity to vote on what we feel is important as many social platforms allow for user reviews and ratings. When the Real Time Web comes into full fruition we will all get to see the value of searching a database of millions of users reviews and opinions.

Facebook has over 300 million users currently who can create, share, and vote on content. Do you see how this will change the online marketing arena even more than it has.

We are moving into a “Now” web and users will experience the web in a way that they never have before when the power of search integrates with real time in which there will be a new breed of search engines like Scoopler, OneRiot, DailyRT, Topsy, almost.at, tweetmeme, and more.

In due time we will see what proves to more valuable, results driven by computers or results driven by humans.

It is a good video where he talks about the several sources that can be used to learn SEO and then goes into correlation graphs and parameters that help in doing search engine optimization. If a person wants to learn SEO there is no structured college university or degree that a person can get in order to learn SEO or show what type of education they have had.

I still say that one of the best resources to learn SEO is the SEO Guide put out by Google, which was last revised in November 2008.

Wordpress is a very popular platform across the world and is used in many different capacities. Now there is a new website where Wordpress users can see where other developers, fans, and bloggers are around the world. The website is wpworldmap.net and it will show you a map of the world with icons of little people showing you where everyone is located.

One of the cool features of the site is that it will allow you to add yourself or company so others around the world can see you and see a link to your website. You can see other Wordpress users around where you are located as well as other developers. The site is made up of a Google Map and uses the drag and click feature so you can click on where you are located and it will pop up a box so you can add your information.

If you see this site tell all of your Wordpress friends to go sign up and claim their spot.

When a company plans to go into a particular market part of that plan must take into consideration that they are going to steal market share from another company. When we do SEO that is the main goal, which is to take a company to the top of the search engines and by default move those that are up there currently down the ladder.

In business there is a common phrase “It’s nothing personal, it’s just business”, and stealing market share is part of the business game. Two of the most common used words in the seo game is reputation and authority and if your company does not have it, then you do not control the market.

Reputation and authority do not come overnight, but they do come to those who are diligent in doing what it takes to be constantly be on the minds of their customers. In order to create TOMA, top of mind awareness, several strategies have to be deployed and when it comes to the online strategy, search engine optimization should be at the front of every business owners mind when it comes to stealing market share.

There are some distinct characteristics of successful companies and one of the major ones is that they want to dominate and dominate in a huge way. They do not feel bad about the other guys who are out there busting their buts because they only care about how big of the market they can grab.

Lets take the powerful Wal-Mart company for example, when it comes to stealing market share they know how to do it in a big way and the corporate executives have the goal of continually increasing that market share. Every business should have this mentality that every day they need to somehow increase their market share and not be afraid of “Oh no if we do this then that other little company might go out of business.”

This may sound tough but those who are in the SEO business live by one thing and that is dominance. Getting a #1 ranking in Google for a particular keyword phrase is dominance and a King of the Mountain type of mentality. Grab your share of the market and steal it if you have to by doing seo for your business today.

One of the common factors that big companies have over smaller companies is that they are always changing and when it comes to the internet and search engines change is a good thing. I know over the last couple of years we have heard that phrase over and over, but when it comes to seo change is good.

Search engines have a computer program that is designed to crawl information on the web and then index it properly within their large database of information. This computer program is often called a spider and when it comes to spiders they love to eat and the food that search engine spiders love is fresh valuable unique content.

They eat this stuff up like kids on Halloween candy, and therefore it is important to give them what they want. One of the most important things to remember is as a website owner you can teach the Google Spider how often you want him to come back simply by how often you place food out for him. If you have a drop in traffic or your rankings one of the things to do first is to add content to your site so Google can crawl it.

Big companies constantly have new content on their websites and therefore where there is new food there is also the spider that all webmasters love, the Google Spider. The more he is on your site crawling your content the better for you because one of the parameters that Google looks at is Fresh Valuable Content, according to Google’s patent application.

When you start to think of the huge companies and sites on the internet there is one thing the majority of them have and that is content that is continually being added on a daily basis or even by a second basis. Many of these companies are user generated allowing internet users the ability to add their own content whenever they want.

Twitter is a great example of this in how a company can build a platform that allows for content to be added by users in a very quick fashion and in a matter of 3 years or so Twitter is now the talk of internet land. Right now Twitter is on both of the minds of Microsoft and Google as they are both trying to figure out how to harness the power of real time search.

If you want your company to have a good image in Google’s eyes, constantly add value to the web by providing new content all of the time. If you struggle with this, one of the strategies that other companies do is provide users the opportunity to post articles on the company’s blog or within their forum. Either way allowing user generated content is a sound strategy to keep Google on your website.

Google has now officially gone into the music business by launching Google Music. Google Music has been in the works for a little over a year as Google was approached by leading music companies like Lala, Rhapsody, and Imeem who wanted to use the power of Google’s search engine.

Until now Itunes has been the primary place where people can download and buy music. Now you can type any artists name, song, or lyrics to a song and it will bring back some links where you can listen to some streaming music and purchase that music from these previously noted music companies.

This new feature by Google might not come out and kill Itunes dominance in the music market, but it will help people be able to find music and artist in a much easier and quicker fashion. This will be good for the musicians who will now find more people able to find their music.

When it comes to doing seo for major music labels and artists this may change some things on how they decide to market more with Rhapsody, Lala, and Imeem.

Advice for Google LBC duplicate listings (use with caution):

First of all “duplicate listings” occur when 2 listings have either the same phone number, address or url in the LBC contact information. We will use the term “blocking” to define the problem that occurs when you have 2 + duplicate listings. When this is true, any updates made to either listing will typically fail to show in the live listing. “Unblocking” can only be achieved when all these details are different between 2 or more listings: phone number, address and url.

Google LBC Listing Advice #1

If possible, you need to claim the records by clicking on Claim your business button visible in the bubble. Do so in both cases, make the listings identical and then verify them. Ultimately the two listings will merge.

Google LBC Listing Advice #2

Instead, edit all the contact info to be identical to your main (best ranked) listing. Google has been slowly merging duplicates into one. Your main listing with the most trust factors will, in most cases, rank higher than the duplicates. User reviews and user generated content that gets created will most likely accumulate in your main listing. As Google gets better at merging duplicates the problem will take care of itself. So make your duplicates the same and wait for a merge to happen.

Happy Day!
