Michigan Man Sent to Hospital Twice in Two Days for Huffing

A 25 year old male has been caught huffing keyboard cleaners twice over a two day period.

Police responded to a call for a man passed out in a restaurant restroom and found the man lying on the floor, still holding the product. When they attempted to take it from him he started screaming, was handcuffed, and his body started shaking uncontrollably. A second can was found in the trash nearby.

He was discharged from the hospital the next day and took a taxi home--but along the way had the driver stop at a store. When he returned to the cab he was inhaling from a can of keyboard cleaner and shortly after, the cab driver called police when the man started having seizures.

When police arrived they noticed the man was still inhaling from the can. He was subdued so they could get the can away from him and he was transported back to the hospital

Two Inhalant Cases in One Day in Rapid City, South Dakota

Rapid City Police responded to two separate inhalant related cases yesterday morning.

Police found a 21 year old female passed out in her running car in a hotel parking lot at 2 am. When the officer reached in to shut off the car the driver came to, restarted the car, shifted into reverse, and backed into the police car. She drove off and a police chase ensued until traffic spikes punctured the car’s tires. The driver abandoned the moving car and it came to a stop after rolling into an apartment building. She again attempted to run but was subdued by a police dog.

Four cans of computer dusting spray were found in her car and she had admitted she had been inhaling the product. She was arrested for “driving under the influence, driving under revocation, aggravated eluding, possession of a revoked driver's license, resisting arrest, hit and run, obstruction and ingesting.”

45 minutes later, police responded to a report of two women huffing at an apartment building. When they arrived they found two women, aged 23 and 54, with their “hands and faces covered with gold spray paint and a plastic bag containing the paint.”

Connecticut Man Breaks Into Home After Huffing

Last Saturday, a 41 year old man was arrested after an inhalant abuse related incident. The man was seen wandering around a neighborhood and then a short while later he broke into one of the homes. He was confronted by the homeowner and told him he was an “FBI agent with NCIS and he was on a case.”

Police responded and found a number of cans of computer duster in his possession. He admitted he had been “huffing” them.

Connecticut Man Dead After Huffing Before His Brother's Graduation

A Connecticut family came to Los Angeles to see their son graduate from Claremont McKenna but instead, last Friday they ended up losing their 19 year old younger son to inhalant abuse.

Police were called to a dorm room for an unconscious male. When they responded they noticed a number of empty canisters of nitrous oxide around. The 19 year old was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Alabama Man Attacks Police Officer With Scissors After Huffing

A man faces two attempted murder charges after an alleged huffing related incident.

Earlier this month the man’s parents went to his house and called the police after they could see him lying unresponsive on a bed. When a police officer and fireman approached the man’s body, he jumped up and attempted to attack them with scissors.

The article notes neighbors reported the man as being a good person and that “huffing may have changed his personality.” The police detective makes a good point about inhalant abuse- "It was not only a danger to yourself but as we can see in this case you can be a danger to other people,"

Utah Teen Crashes Car Into House After Huffing Behind The Wheel

Last Friday afternoon, a 17 year old male teen and his two passengers were allegedly huffing computer dusting spray behind the wheel when the driver passed out, causing the car to crash into a house. The driver was charged with DUI and the passengers were released to the custody of their parents. The Fox 13 piece has images of the damage to the home.

Wisconsin Teen Caught Huffing "Near Explosive Level of Propane" at Home

A 17 year old male has been charged with two counts of felony burglary and two misdemeanor counts of “intentionally inhaling a hazardous substance” after family members found him huffing on two occasions.

On January 31 officers were called to a home after the homeowner’s daughters had called their father complaining of a strong smell of propane coming from the home. The father told officers he believed his stepson was huffing propane in the home. Frighteningly, when the fire department arrived, they noted the “level of propane inside the home was at a "near explosive" level.” They also noted two five-ounce aerosol cans of hairspray and a 10-ounce can of air freshener, which he admitted to huffing, were found empty in the boy’s bedroom.

Previously on January 24^th the homeowner’s daughters had seen the boy huff two-thirds of a 20-pound tank of propane in the home. He suffered cold burns to his right knuckles and upper left arm during that incident. He said he “learned about huffing propane from the Internet and said that he wasn't trying to harm himself, but only wanted to get high.” He also noted he huffed the propane “by using a credit card and screwdriver to access tanks in a locked garage.”

22 Year Old's Death Attributable to Inhalant Abuse

An autopsy released last week revealed that the 22 year old male who was found face-down and unresponsive in his bed earlier this year died from huffing computer dusting spray.

Police found the man at his off campus house on February 22, a can of the computer duster with him in his bed and several empty cans in the room. The report also notes he had small amounts of the anti-anxiety drug alprazolam and painkiller oxycodone in his system “which would have increased the spray’s toxic effects.” He also had “signs of cardiovascular disease, which would make him more susceptible to the spray.”

According to the autopsy: “Given the autopsy and investigative findings, it is my opinion that the cause of death in this case is 1,1 difluoroethane toxicity. This substance, found in aerosol computer duster/cleaner spray, can have cardiotoxic effects, and likely caused an acute cardiac arrhythmia in the decedent.”

Serial Huffer Arrested in Florida

A 40 year old woman was arrested after stealing cans of computer duster to “keep the voices away.”

The report notes she walked into a local Wal-Mart, took two cans of duster from the shelf, put them in a bag and left the store without paying. Two hours later she walked back into the same store, went to the same section and placed two more bags of computer duster in her bag. Guards stopped the woman as she attempted to exit the store. She was arrested and police records showed she had “at least 13 previous arrests dating back to 2008 that were related to inhaling or ingesting harmful chemicals.”

Minnesota Man Arrested After Huffing and Passing Out at Local Store

Police were called to a local Target for a report of a man huffing outside the store’s entrance and staggering inside and outside the store. When they arrived they found him passed out with several cans surrounding him. He was treated and transported to the county jail.

Arkansas Man Arrested for Huffing in Store Restroom

A 21 year old Jonesboro man was arrested last week after an inhalant abuse related incident.

Employees of a local store noticed the man take a two pack of dusters and enter the store’s restroom. An employee followed the man into the restroom and reported hearing him “huff” the computer duster. Police were called and the police report notes the man was “unsteady on his feet, his speech was slurred and he acted like he was in a daze or unaware of his surroundings” at the time of his arrest.”

He was taken to the county detention center, charged with theft of property under $1,000; breathing, inhaling or drinking intoxicating compounds; and outstanding warrants from the city of Trumann."

Illinois Mother Charged for Huffing

An Illinois woman was charged with two misdemeanors. The woman allegedly fell into a "catatonic state" on the floor of a locked bathroom after inhaling computer duster. The woman's, "4-year-old child was in the shower, according to the state's attorney's office."

Pennsylvania Man's Crash is Inhalant Related

An Elkins Park man, 37, that was arrested for a crash last month, "had difluoroethane in his system, which is commonly found in electronics duster, police said."

The man was arrested on March 2nd, after crashing into a utility pole and fleeing in the car. When police stopped the car, the man had slurred speech, glazy eyes, and was responding slowly to questions. He did however pass a field sobriety test. The man's blood tested positive for difluoroethane and he was charged with, "DUI, careless driving and accidents involving damage to property."

According to court documents, the man was arrested two days earlier in a nearby town for, "smelling or inhaling toxic releasing substances, and possession of a solvent for releasing toxic vapors and fumes."

South Carolina Man Arrested Sixth Time for Huffing

A 32 year old Charleston man was arrested last week on charges of huffing spray paint. Around 1:45 am on a Sunday police heard loud noises and upon investigation in a marshy area by the highway found the man “clutching a 4-inch knife, spinning in circles and talking to himself.” They then smelled the spray paint and noticed the gold spray paint on the man’s body and clothes along with three paint cans nearby, each with a hole in the side.

The man denies the charges and the police report lists his reason. “He stated that he sprays the gold paint and places the rag on his mouth. When the devil worshippers come after him and try to orally sexually assault him, the paint gets on their genitals, and he can use that information to prosecute them.” Since 2006 the man has been arrested and convicted on five glue-sniffing charges. For the most recent incident he faces a charge “sniffing aromatic hydrocarbons”

New Jersey Man Found Huffing in the Middle of the Road

A 40 year old man was charged with driving while intoxicated after he allegedly stopped his car in the middle of the road and began inhaling from a can of computer dust cleaner.

A motorist had seen the man huffing and had taken away his car keys. Police responded to the call and noticed two cans of computer duster at the scene. The man was taken to the hospital for evaluation and “issued summons for possession of a toxic chemical for the purpose of intoxication, driving while intoxicated and numerous motor vehicle violations.”

Pennsylvania Woman Huffs on Way From Court to Probation Office

A 46 year old woman was arrested after she was caught huffing computer duster. She had been in court that morning for a huffing incident back on March 4. The case was continued and the woman was ordered “on immediate pretrial supervision.”

Her daughter drove her to the probation office and told one the deputies her mother had been huffing on the ride from the courthouse. When the deputy approached the car he saw “four canisters of dust remover on the front passenger seat floor.” He then saw the woman “grab one of the canisters and begin huffing it.” The woman was arrested on charges of inhaling toxic releasing substances and simple assault.

Wyoming Man Pleads Guilty to Inhalant Related Deaths

On Halloween 2011 three young men were pronounced dead after a huffing related crash. However, one of the men actually recovered and late last week the 20 year old man pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide.

Toxicology reports show the driver was huffing keyboard cleaner shortly before the crash and earlier that day an Office Max employee noticed the driver of the same car had stolen two cans of computer duster.

Killed in the accident were a 17 year old male who was ejected from the car and died at the scene and a 21 year old male who was transported to the hospital and died due to his injuries.

Inhalant Abuse on the Increase in Pennsylvania

The Clearfield-Jefferson Drug & Alcohol Commission Drug-Free Communities Coalition has expressed concern about a spike in inhalant abuse in their community.

The 2011 Pennsylvania Youth Survey revealed that in Clearfield County, 8.5% of 8th graders had used inhalants in the past 30 days (the state’s average is 6%) and that both the eighth and tenth graders use was higher than the national rate. In Jefferson County, 10th and 12th graders reported higher use compared to national findings.

ACE: Tell us a little about yourself.
Angela Thompson (AT): I am a 36 year old married mother of 2 small kids. My daughter, Emma, is 8 and my son, Connor, is 6. My husband Matt is 50 and we have been married for 8 years. It has never been easy for Matt and I. The hardest obstacle has always been financial and for Matt it still is. But for me, becoming a parent and trying to be a good parent, became and will always be the hardest and most challenging thing for me.

ACE: When did you start using inhalants?
AT: It was a day in early 2009. I can remember feeling very overwhelmed and hopeless. My depression was at a all time low and at that point there was no amount of alcohol or any drug that could take me away from my reality. That weekend we were at my grandparents house in New Jersey. It was late and everyone was asleep. I was sitting at the computer and I still don’t know how it occurred to me. I’ve never thought about or had any knowledge of inhalants before that night. But I picked up the can of [duster] that was next to the computer and started inhaling it. Never thinking that at that moment my life would never be the same. I would never be the same.

ACE: What led you to inhalants or where did you first learn about huffing?
AT: I have been suffering from depression since the age of 11. As I got older my depression got worse. Until I was about 20 I was able to stay sheltered from “the real world.” I was very naïve to some of the bad things that were out there just waiting for me. “Sex, Drugs and Rock-N-Roll” just to name a few. Nothing in Moderation. Never looking at what the consequences might be for every choice I made. I was very immature and could not see past that day, at that moment. “I want what I want when I want it” was my motto. Putting those factors (and a few more) together, it was only a matter of time before I would start self medicating with anything that made me feel good. For most of my twenties my life was all about getting and staying high or drunk. But everything changed when I got pregnant with my daughter. It was like a miracle. Suddenly my depression was lifted. I felt as though I was on a 9 month natural high. I felt great so there was no reason or need to put anything in my body that would harm the baby growing inside me. For that I was very grateful. I didn’t want to think about what was going to happen once she was born. What I never imagined was that my depression would or could get any worse than it had been.

About two years after my son was born we had to move out of our apartment because we just could not afford to stay there. We ended up having to share an apartment with my mother. I knew that situation was a bad idea from the start but we were out of options. Having to live in a 2 bedroom apartment with the five of us brought back a lot of tension and hostility. I ended up going back to work at one of the bars in town. Most days I would close that bar and not get home ‘til 3 or 4 am. While working at the bar I started drinking a lot. I got to the point where I needed to bring my own bottle of vodka to work. It would be gone by the end of my shift. In November of 2008 I was told by the owner to take a vacation. I knew I would never go back there. For the next couple months I stayed home with the kids and just wallowed in my own depression and self pity. I was definitely lower than any low I had experienced before. I had become very hopeless. I felt my children and my husband would suffer and never have the life that they so desperately deserved. And I blamed myself to the point of self hatred. I could not see or find any hope for a better future. I just thought we were stuck in this hole and in no way was I strong enough to dig us out.

ACE: What were the negative impacts inhalants had on your life while you were using them?
AT: Before I started huffing I never really had bad consequences throughout my years of drinking and illegal drug use. Almost immediately after I started huffing I started having unbelievable consequences. My clean driving record was gone with 8 car accidents, 3 totaled cars and 2 DUI’s in 3 months. I also tossed my clean criminal record out the window with too many arrests to count, 6 days in jail, years of probation and thousands of dollars in fines. And let’s not forget the physical consequences with 8 rehabs, 3 mental hospitals, hundreds of trips to the ER and a 5 day stay in the burn unit of the hospital because of a chemical burn covering half of my face. I always had cuts and bruises from head to toe. And there is no doubt in my mind that I caused irreversible brain damage. Putting that poison in my body made me literally crazy. I did and said a lot of dangerous and insane things while using. There are quite a few things I don’t remember doing or saying which I consider a blessing. But when I look back at some of the things I do remember, it makes me sick to my stomach. It’s like looking at a stranger because that person is not me and will never be again.

ACE: What long-term effects did inhalants have on your life? On your family?
AT: As far as the long-term effects inhalants had on our live[s], it’s so important and crucial to stay focused on the positive effects. There is no way that I can turn back time and change what I did. What’s done is done but I have to believe that everything happens for a reason. The only way I was going to change my life and find happiness was to change everything including the way I was thinking. I had to change a negative person into a positive one. But it’s a choice. I choose to look at the positive effects this whole mess brought.

ACE: What made you decide to stop using inhalants?
AT: I decided long before I actually stopped that I wanted to stop. I tried many times to get clean and sober. There were many factors involved in finally staying stopped. The biggest and most important factor was definitely finding the treatment that worked for my depression after years and years of trying to find the right one. Also, from the first day I became clean. I started researching anything I could find on inhalants and the dangers of inhalants. I had no idea what I was putting in my body. At some point I just felt in my heart and knew that if I used one more time that something really bad was going to happen. I think it’s a miracle that I survived a inhalant addiction. Many people don’t live through this addiction. I feel so grateful to come out of this alive and with a new outlook on life. It was like God opened my eyes to see what my purpose was in life. I truly believe my life was spared in order to help others by educating anyone I can on the Dangers of Inhalants and sharing my experience. I also found another passion in crafting that I never knew I had. I went through over 30 years never knowing or finding my purpose and passions in life. It wasn’t until I came out of this deadly addiction, that I found my true purpose for being here. And for that, I am truly grateful.

ACE: What advice would you give young students and adults who are considering using inhalants or who are trying to stop using inhalants?
AT: For anyone considering or already using inhalants I would tell them to educate themselves and out what exactly they are putting in their body. Someone said it best—Every time you inhale those chemicals it’s like playing Russian roulette with your life. Think about how your family would feel if you ended up dead for a 10 second high. Is it really worth it? What I want everyone to understand is most addicts also suffer from mental health issues in some form or another. It is so important for everyone to know that you cannot treat your addiction until you find help with your mental health issues.

One of the things that amazed me was the lack of education on inhalants, especially by those who should know about inhalants. Doctors, nurses, EMTs, therapists, police officers, and drug and alcohol counselors- just to name a few. There is a huge misconception about inhalants by drug and alcohol facilities. The treatment centers that I have been in treat all addictions the same. No matter what your drug of choice is, the treatment plan is pretty much the same. But what they don’t know is that inhalants are not drugs. They are toxic chemicals and poisons. They need to be treated differently. There are also a lot of parents that are not educated and in denial about the possibility of their child using inhalants. There are more and more huffing deaths each year but due to the lack of education these deaths have been attributed to other causes.

One of the many stories involving inhalant deaths in my community that still baffles me happened in the late 90’s. Five juniors from a local high school were killed in a horrific car accident. The impact of the car crash tore bark off a tree along U.S. 1. By all accounts, the girls were exemplary citizens, bright students and popular. But neither residents of the area, school officials nor, least of all, the parents of the girls prepared for what followed that week. A report from the Delaware County Medical Examiner’s office said that the driver of the car had inhaled a chemical solvent that could have impaired her judgment. Further analysis found that three of the other girls had inhaled as well. “We were finally getting back to normal,” said the superintendent in response to the medical examiner’s report. “Then this hit.” More information on this incident can be found at New York Times.

Awareness is one of the most complex problems and it was reflected there that week in the surprise, bewilderment and even denial by some that these teenagers would have used a chemical inhalant to get high. The principal of the high school, which has about 1,300 students, said beer was typically the intoxicant of choice among the students, many of whom come from stable, middle-class families. He said neither teachers nor school administrators ever suspected that students were involved with inhalants.

A survey by the Consumer Product Safety Commission found that 91 percent of parents talked to their children about substance abuse but fewer than half said they ever talked about inhalants. And 95 percent said they believed their children had never used inhalants. ''This is a very difficult situation,'' said chairman of the safety commission. ''Even the best of parents don't realize there could be a danger, that a child could even die on the first sniff.''

I believed the stigma surrounding inhalant abuse is a huge factor in the denial and ignorance of this growing deadly epidemic. Surveys on inhalant abuse in the late 90s concluded that a large percent of inhalant users were mostly school-aged children. I think if a survey on inhalant abuse was conducted today, they would find that many adults are abusing inhalants. Adults who use inhalants are generally chronic or long-term inhalant abusers and are among the most difficult drug abuse patients to treat.

NIPAW 2013: "Be A Superhero In Your Home" Event

The Alliance for Consumer Education partnered with the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) and YMCA of Metropolitan Washington to host "Be A Superhero In Your Home" in recognition of National Inhalants and Poisons Awareness Week.

On Friday, March 22, 2013 around 200 children were at the YMCA Arlington to learn how to "Be A Superhero in Their Home". The highlight of the event was a visit from Batman- a Poison Prevention Superhero! Arriving in his 1966 replica Batmobile, Batman met with the children to give poison prevention advice like asking an adult before consuming something, not putting products that may harm you into your body, and by reading directions and labels to ensure products are being used in the correct way.

Children worked their way through the following seven stations to become a "Superhero in the Home".

PhD Station

Station 1: PhD Station: The YMCA PhD On The Move Van had children running through obstacles to reach cones that featured two similiar looking pictures. Children had to knock over the cone with the picture they thought was safe to consume.

Superhero Masks Station

Station 2: Superhero Masks: Since children were becoming superheroes in the home, this station allowed children to create their own superhero identity by having them create a superhero mask.

Which One Can I Taste? Station

Station 3: Which One Can I Taste?: Children were shown two pictures of similar looking items. One of the items is a consumable product that is ok to eat, while the other is a product from the home that serves a great purpose, but is something one should not eat. Children were asked which they thought was safe to taste. The children were able to see how similar items can look and if they are unsure of what something is they need to ask permission from an adult before touching or tasting.

Station 4: Safe to Taste Collage: Children searched through magazines and newspapers to find pictures of items that are safe to taste and not safe to taste. They then added the images to group collage boards that were presented at the end of the event, as a visual reminder of what the kids learned throughout the day.

Station 5: Batman: Children had the opportunity to meet with Batman in a small group setting. Batman explained why he is a Poison Prevention Superhero, and gave out Batman goodies to the kids!

How Can I be a superhero in the home...

Station 6: How Can I be a Superhero In The Home?: Children discussed and created a list of ways they can be poison prevention superheroes at home. Relying on the information they had gathered throughout the other stations, children talked about ways to protect themselves and their families- like reading labels and asking before touching.

I Make A Good Superhero Because...

Station 7: I Make a GoodSuperhero in the Home Because...: Children chose one way they can be a superhero in the home and either drew or wrote what they will do. Children also signed "Thank you" posters to Batman thanking him for coming to the event.

West Virginia Teen Dies After Abusing Inhalants

A 19 year old male from Ranson passed away last month after abusing inhalants. Jesse had been huffing computer duster in his room the night of the Super Bowl when he overdosed. He was placed on life support but passed away on February 13th.

The community planned a memorial concert in Harpers Ferry in the man’s honor and to raise awareness of the dangers of inhalant abuse. Local bands played the show and in between the bands area teens “discussed their experiences with Jesse, as well as struggles with various kinds of substance abuse.”

New Hampshire Driver Arrested After Abusing Inhalants Behind The Wheel

Via WMUR in New Hampshire:

A 25 year old woman was arrested and charged with operating under the influence after an inhalant related crash.

Around 10:05 am the woman’s car “veered into the parking lane, sideswiping a parked vehicle before rear-ending a second parked vehicle, with the collision’s impact sending it into a third parked vehicle.” A can of computer duster was found in the front seat of the car and the driver was allegedly huffing the product immediately before the crash.
