Barbados: HELP LOCAL ENTREPRENEURS

On February 19 and 20 at the Barbados Yacht Club, the Barbados Entrepreneurs' Venture Capital Fund held its first Shepherding Training Programme designed to nurture a new crop of potential "shepherds," business mentors to tend a flock of local entrepreneurs. The course gave them a comprehensive introduction to the CBET Shepherding Model™ - intended to pull the wool off entrepreneurs' eyes.

Designed to educate new shepherds on the processes, skills and characteristics necessary for shepherding entrepreneurs to success, the programme featured a dynamic line-up of presenters that included current business advisors, shepherds, entrepreneurs and leadership expert Toney Olton of The Potter Centre in Barbados.

Drawing on presenters who were already a part of the process, participants heard real case studies and examples from those who had already lived through it. The interactive sessions allowed them to clarify misconceptions as well as offer insights on how they thought they could enhance efficiency and effectiveness.

"The Shepherding Training Programme exceeded my expectations," said Gregory Hinkson, founder of consulting firm SAMDOR Services Ltd. and one of the keen potential new shepherds. "It was an excellent programme that was varied, lively, interesting and beneficial and a must for anyone seeking to become an entrepreneur's shepherd."

Dr. Basil Springer, Project Manager for Barbados Business Enterprise Corp. (BBEC), the company that manages the Fund, noted that shepherding was an essential component of The CBET Shepherding Model™ and it was therefore imperative that new mentors should learn about the process.

In any endeavor, the starting of a task is a good thing. However, the continuation and completion of that task is even more important. Cycles of Action can be best described as a complex system of starts and endings-decision making and execution. In everything we do, the process is what we learn from the most. If you start something and never finish, you have created a cycle which is incomplete. Can you imagine having years of cycles that were never completed? I would imagine you may start to feel unsuccessful or unaccomplished.

The completing of each cycle you start enhances your self esteem, self worth, and success. If you start something, complete it. If you do not complete it, and you really wanted to get it done, it will weight on you for a long time.

Create small successful-completed cycles of action and inevitable you will create large-completed cycles of action.

Caribbean Brands: Who do you pay attention to?

Are you an online Caribbean business? Would you consider your ideas and execution of those concepts viable to your online growth? In the current climate, having less can actually mean having more. This insight can produce rewards and develop relationships that can propel your online Caribbean business into being a well known brand.

With little capital to invest like the major online brands, I use a strategy which is based on a simple but proven technique. This is not something I developed, I only observed the process and then applied it to my situation. People naturally group themselves into categories, I will assign these as : On Lookers, Users, and Supporters.

On Lookers

They are aware that you are there. They see your brand online, they have used your services, However, they are not engaged with you or your business. I like to think of these people as followers in a sense. They need to hear what others have to say before they step in and engage with your online company or become a active member. I do not think that this is a bad thing and we can all be in this group at one point or another.

Users

I was once told, if you cannot be used, you are useless. This is a concept which sounds harsh, however, if you peel back the layers, it is easy to see why you would want people to use your online services, read articles, and interact with your content. Why? Because those interested see a way that your business is useful to them. Users in this sense, clearly point to a customer base whom may just get what they want from you and then move on or may return when they would like something else.

Supporters

The most important of the three to any online Caribbean medium. Supporters are engaged with your growth and process. They truly believe in what you are doing. This group always retweet, send your link to others, they talk about your product to others. This group deserves the most attention because they are your base. These are the people you respond to on twitter, Facebook. They deserve your time and energy. These people will account for 80% of the viewership, and referrals.

Slow and steady win the marathon, who ever you pay attention will be where all your energy is spent. If you choose to spend a great deal of energy on Users or Onlookers, I believe you are wasting your valuable time. When most of your energy is spent with your supporters, then you encourage deep meaningful connections that will enhance their experience and bring in more supporters.

CMEX-Haiti has an Opportunity

The Caribbean Media Exchange on Sustainable Tourism (CMEx), which promotes sustainable tourism development among media practitioners and industry tourism stakeholders, believes that this week's deadly earthquake in Port-au-Prince is an opportunity for Caribbean countries to find innovative ways to help the survivors put their lives back together.

"The richer countries and international organizations are best equipped to deal with the urgent need for cash, medicines and earth-moving machinery," but CMEx director Lelei LeLaulu urged the "family of Caribbean nations to use their strengths to help Haiti re-build a stronger nation driven by a dynamic and resilient economy."

"The strength of the Caribbean is centered on tourism so the region should look for ways of using tourism to feed resources not only to the devastated areas, but also to communities in other parts of Haiti," he added.

"Effective recovery requires helping all parts of the country," opined LeLaulu, who recalled "Haiti was already suffering from an economic catastrophe before the earthquake leveled its capital. This is a golden opportunity for the region to step up and ensure its stricken sister nation is able to rise and to be an equal partner in the Caribbean community of nations."

The earthquake hit just as Haiti was starting to emerge from lawlessness and other social problems, and was beginning to attract visitors. Hotel groups like Choice Hotels International were preparing to add new properties on the island.

The U.S. State Department is urging Americans to avoid travel to Haiti but the CMEx director strongly suggested "everybody should make future plans to travel to Haiti, not to get in the way of relief and reconstruction efforts, but to spend their tourist dollars in ways which help people and their communities ensure the recovery is a lasting one. The rich cultural heritage will make it an unforgettable experience for first-time visitors to Haiti."

STING: Online Concert Access?

The online presence for Sting has clearly taken a turn for the better. Sting Jamaica introduced online access to the famous Sting concert-a staple in Dancehall Reggae community worldwide, can now be accessed via online. I began updating on my twitter account stating that the live show will be able to viewed live for a cost (disclaimer-I am not affiliated with Sting). At last count, there were 2,373 online and at $50USD each, that is potential revenues of $118,650USD or $10, 679,500 JMD. Not bad for exclusive access to STING.

By 11:00pm on December, 26th; the registered website www.StingJamaica.com.jm was being listed as an attack site. I am not sure if the site was hacked but clearly something happened over the past few hrs. Jamaicalivetv.com picked up the slack and the site was redirected.

I am sure we will begin to see other major concerts offering this option for those in the diaspora or those not able to make the show. I have in a mind a variety of concerts that may benefit and may have the potential to earn additional revenues by creating online access-Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival, Fully Loaded, Champions in Action. I do think the $50 USD cost is fair. I hope the Sting promoters are successful with this new online venture because once the dollars makes sense, we will see an increase in access for concerts across the Caribbean.

On Thursday November 19, 2009, at the offices of the Heart Foundation of Jamaica (HFJ), Jamaicans.com owner, Xavier Murphy , presented a check for J$ 41,050 (US $500) to assist the Foundation in its fight against heart disease in Jamaica. The donation was made possible through the generosity of the Jamaicans.com site visitors & members who donated to the annual Heart Foundation of Jamaica drive. Mr. Paul Thompson, Medical Manager at the Foundation said, “With the rapid increase in the demand for our services and the coherent growth in our facilities and offerings, there has been an ever-increasing need for us to acquire additional equipment.

This donation will go a far way in helping the Foundation to do so and in turn, increase the number of persons we are capable of screening island-wide.” The HFJ was established over 38 years ago and screened over 64,000 persons who visited its premises at 30 Beechwood Avenue in 2006 alone. The main objective of the Foundation is to reduce the incidence of death from heart disease in Jamaica, while educating and screening the nation on cardiovascular diseases and its prevention.

The Heart Foundation of Jamaica has been the recipient of donations from the Florida based website, Jamaicans.com for the past 6 years. The donation is made in the memory of Marcia "Ackeegirl" Davidson. A true Jamaican, Marcia was instrumental to the Jamaicans.com website, she was the first moderator and administrator and was active in many other areas. SAINT LUCIA COURTS ASIAN-AMERICAN MARKET

Saint Lucia's tourism authorities are ramping up efforts targeting the burgeoning Asian American market and are extending special welcomes for Taiwanese Americans.

Louis Lewis, St. Lucia's director of tourism, said that on the heels of a recent familiarisation visit of Taiwanese Americans spearheaded by Bay Gardens Resorts, the island was now eagerly anticipating the arrival of leading civil society activist Iris Ho who will be a participant at next week's Caribbean Media Exchange on Sustainable Tourism (CMEx) being held at Coco Palm's Conference Centre.

Saint Lucia has often explored the potential for "ethnic" tourism in the Caribbean, and the tourism authorities are assessing the potential to market Saint Lucia to Taiwanese Americans. CMEx meets next week under a theme which examines multicultural tourism markets as well as climate change.

Saint Lucia is attractive to Taiwanese Americans not just on the strength of its natural beauty and merits as a vacation spot, but also because the island is one of a handful in the Caribbean that recognizes the Taiwanese government.

Ian Williams, an acclaimed journalist who has defended the right of the Taiwanese to self-determination, and Iris Ho who represents a major Taiwanese American advocacy organization in Washington DC will be present at CMEx to explore opportunities.

Among others, they will meet with Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation Senator Allen Chastanet, Director Lewis as well as Taiwanese diplomats on the island. "It's a long way from Taiwan, but we have hundreds of thousands of Taiwanese in America, who remain attached to their home country. They are now a prosperous community and include many professionals and business people. Like most middle class Americans, they like vacations and we think they might like to show their appreciation to Saint Lucia," said Iris Ho.

Senator Chastanet pointed out that Saint Lucia has long been recognised as a legendary honeymoon destination, but with the addition of world recognised boutique hotels, new golf courses, additional shopping attractions and casinos, the destination is embarking on broadening its marketing appeal.

Since it was launched a few weeks ago, Future Services International's 'Find-A-Lawyer' service has received an overwhelmingly positive response from the public. As a result, the company will soon make it's 'Find A Lawyer' service available online.

Caribbean: The music experience, evolved?

I recently learned about Moderati through a Techcrunch article. I am aware that there are some Caribbean artistes who license their image, brand, etc. However, this is still unexplored in the Caribbean entertainment space. I envision a time when Caribbean artistes will get the importance of distributing their music through what I like to call the "experience portal".

The experience portal will be how Caribbean artiste license themselves to services like Romplr-recently used by the Hip Hop artist Soulja Boy. Think back to the days when you bought the tape, yep, the tape or cassette. The experience of pulling the wrapper from the package and seeing who wrote the songs-listening to the new music, and getting that first wave of music in your ear, had to be the best! Nowadays, when you purchase a new album, all you get is a electronic photo and the music. I started missing the experience. I am fully aware that future generations will not have this experience to miss.

Moderati brings this experience back through the use of social media. Techrcunch stated: In addition to being able to remix the single, 50 Cent is giving the user that creates the best remix with the app (and shares it on the app’s branded site), the opportunity to meet him. Compared to the other rap-focused iPhone apps out there, this one falls a little short in my opinion. It only lets you remix one song, and it seems for like more of an opportunity for 50 Cent to create buzz around his new single and promote Vitamin Water than to actually create a broadly entertaining app.

That being said, its free and could provide for some interesting and funny songs. Plus, songs can easily be shared to social networks. If the app could include some of 50 Cent’s more popular songs, such as “In Da Club,” perhaps it could give T-Pain’s popular app a run for it’s money.

This spells O-P-P-O-R-T-U-N-I-T-Y for a Caribbean music industry lacking in music sales. Think about the experience of going to a concert! Think about about the experience of interacting with your favorite artiste on twitter! We have always purchased the experience. The market is clearly looking for ways to bring that experience back. I believe that the Caribbean music industry is ready for this transition. I would recommend that Iribbean tunes (one of my favorite Caribbean download media companies), Jamdown digital, Pukshop, and others start to explore this as a option.

MACO Magazine celebrate 10 years

In the light of the global economic downturn which has adversely affected many economies and industries, the publishing industry has found no escape. Major international publications have closed within the past year, each of which fell victim to the major slump in advertising and retail sales.

However, despite these challenges Maco Caribbean Living magazine has managed to weather the storm and is celebrating its 10^th year of publishing with a special anniversary collector's issue of its flagship publication.

The company's Managing Director Neysha Soodeen is ecstatic about progress in the past decade, as well as the growth of Caribbean publishers who continue to bring validation to the innovation, dynamism, and creativity of that which is Caribbean.

She said: "Ten years ago, there were no magazines showcasing the way we live - our architecture, diversity, colours and cuisine. With MACO, our aim was primarily to make our Caribbean people proud of who we are. I felt we were emulating everything 'foreign' without a real appreciation of our own uniqueness. My wish was to showcase the richness of the Caribbean to the world."

Soodeen said that while living abroad, it became evident how very limited the perception was of the Caribbean region. "With MACO Caribbean Living, we are able to show the beauty and distinctiveness of our people and the way we live. What has also been pleasing to me is to see other empowered female publishers make their mark within the industry, attracting diverse audiences internationally."

It is Soodeen's belief that competition is the mother of innovation and that publishers should work together in such fora as the Caribbean Publishers Network (CAPNET) to ensure the viability of the industry and the voice of the Caribbean.

What's so special about the 10th anniversary edition? For starters, Soodeen said the design is more contemporary, more of a 'coffee table book' than the normal MACO presentation. She disclosed that Marie France Aqui, the magazine's creative director, had changed the look of this issue significantly. The magazine is printed on a matte stock compared with the glossy paper used over the past 10 years.

Soodeen said this may very well constitute the new look for the next 10 years of MACO Caribbean Living.

Managing Editor of the magazine Helen Pipins observes that the 10th anniversary issue takes a retrospective look at the homes, food, artists, gardens and travel from previous issues, and has also included four new magnificent iconic features in the architectural, art, food and travel sections.

"We have given our readers a bang for their buck. These features pay tribute to some spectacular people who have taken Caribbean art, travel and cuisine to levels which demand respect within their respective fields," Pipins added.

Looking ahead, Soodeen said the future of print internationally sometimes looks daunting as the internet was providing readers with instant information and gratification. However, their readers still desire that 'feel good' aspect of a magazine which cannot be derived from a computer screen.

"Despite consumers cutting back on non-essential items, the need for a feel good factor is ever more important and as a result, we have not seen a decline of retail sales. As more and more magazines disappear, MACO will also gain greater market share not only on retail shelves but with advertisers. I therefore feel confident that Toute Bagai Publishing will survive these trying economic times with the commitment from our 'Macoians'."

Joint Initiative: MobileMatters and Synergy Interactive Media

MobileMatters and Synergy Interactive Media today announced a joint initiative aimed at bringing MobileMatters' innovative SMS Marketing solutions to the Caribbean-American market. The venture is branded: Mobilizing the Caribbean.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (November 12, 2009) - Barbados' Prime Minister Hon. David Thompson will launch a new Barbados Entrepreneurs' Venture Capital Fund on the island this Friday, November 13, 2009.

Intended to add new flavour to the investment market in Barbados, the fund is an essential component of the CBET Shepherding Model™ designed by local businessman Dr. Basil Springer to mitigate the risk of business failure and launch countries into a new era of economic development, one successful business after another.

Caribbean: 10 ways to make money online

When browsing Caribbean websites, I continue to see websites that have no adverts or is monetized with just google adwords. I have made money using google, however, if you only use google ads, that is like leaving money on the table. I would like to take this time to explain the language that is often used to describe how online advertisement is measured and paid out to publishers. CPM-stands for cost per 1000 impressions. Impression-reported whenever an individual ad is displayed on your website. CPA-Cost per action-you receive commission every time a sale is generated. CPC-Cost per click-You earn money each time a visitor click on a link on a sponsor link on your site.

Things can get get a little more complication from here. I will give you the basic. The next question you may have is, which company do I work with to get advertisers? I am going to do my disclaimer here: I am in the business of sharing information and also making money from content I produce. All information below that I will offer to you is affiliate information-I make money from it. It is up to you to decide if you want to use the following companies I list. Please pay attention to their privacy policy and proceed from there, if you wish.

1. Adbrite

This is a fairly easy company to gain access to you. This is great for sites with low traffic that may want to get adverts. They offer banner ads, inline ads, text ads, and full page ads. The pay out is not that great but It is the best you can get for a low traffic website.

2. Linkshare

One the best, most trusted and respected cost per action companies. We utilize this company to gain access to itunes/FYE inventory. They pay on time and there is no minimum amount you will have to make to see a payout. The smallest check I ever receive from them was a commission of $2.38USD.

3. Text Link

Text link ads are a great way to offer adverts at little cost to advertiser for life. The way this works is that you can link to words in your article. I usually charge a lifetime link of $100 USD for life. Be aware of unknown companies who try to have you connect with them to do this. However this can work really well for artistes, music, products. Here is a example: I am checking out this new way to make money.

4. Offline advertisements

This form of advertisement will never die. It has been tested time and time again. There are a variety of ways I have used this method. Provide access for offline companies to online customers. The back end of my business is also the production work and licensing of our brands. This is important to remember. With our DancehallSoca brand, we can only be listed on events with permission. Those promoters in turn will purchase access to our platform.

5. Consulting

I recently had a conversation with a friend of mines-discussing online advertising and the way it can be best utilized. After a short conversation, my friend said to me, "I still do not understand." This is an opportunity, you can offer consultation for a fee to those who have no idea of how to execute this process online.

6. Producing press release s

In the Caribbean entertainment industry this is often one of the most undervalued aspect of promotion. If you are a writer and you like to write. Reach out to artistes and their management and charge a fee. Most Caribbean artistes are not doing it. This is an opportunity.

7. Digital downloads

I decided a while back that the Caribbean digital download space was too crowded and is not profitable as a full fledged business, for me. However, I cannot beat them, so I join them. I have partnerships with digital download companies. For example, Napster and Itunes.

8. Twitter advertisements

Sponsored Tweets is a owned by Izea. They consider themselves to be social media marketing. The most recent sponsors of our Tweets was Volvo and Cheezdoodles. They have a minimum payout of $25USD and you can set up how much you are willing to accept for a tweet.

9. Adverts for video

If you have a website showing videos. There are a number of ways to monetize through google and other companies. I also make money on the back end for producing commercials, video editing, etc.

10. Chitika

Chitika company monetize your content on the back end. It is geared towards search. Ads will only show when a person search google for a word. Ads show up beneath your content displaying relevant adverts.

ALLEN CHASTANET NAMED CARIBBEAN TRAVEL PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR

Saint Lucia's Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation Senator Allen Chastanet has been named the Caribbean Travel Personality of the Year.

Senator Chastanet won the honor at the prestigious 2009 World Travel Awards in London, England over the weekend.

The World Travel Awards acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across all sectors of the global travel and tourism industry.

"It's with great humility that I accept this award on behalf of the Government and people of Saint Lucia," said the Senator, who saluted his fellow Saint Lucian nationals for their commitment to excellence across the hospitality industry.

At the Awards, Saint Lucia once again copped the Caribbean's and World's Leading Honeymoon Destination designations, while the Caribbean's Leading Spa Resort went to The Body Holiday LeSport. The Caribbean's Leading Hotel Brand and the World's Leading All-Inclusive Company went to Sandals Resorts.

"As a Saint Lucian, I am deeply honored to witness such a small destination create a big bang on the world stage," said Saint Lucia's Director of Tourism Louis Lewis, who acknowledged that the weekend awards were additional stimulus for the Saint Lucia Tourist Board to continue striving to improve in today's competitive travel and tourism environment.

Senator Chastanet, who is credited with starting the world acclaimed Saint Lucia Jazz festival, was Vice President of Sales and Marketing with Windjammer Landing in Saint Lucia before being appointed the island's Director of Tourism in the early 1990s.

He became Director of Sales and Marketing at Island Outpost in the mid-90s before serving as Director, then Vice President of Worldwide Sales and Marketing at Air Jamaica for eight years.

In 2001, Travel Agent magazine named Senator Chastanet "Caribbean Destination Person of the Year," and in 2003 he returned to his native Saint Lucia to open Coco Resorts in Rodney Bay Village.

He was appointed to the Saint Lucia cabinet in 2006 and assumed the chairmanship of the Caribbean Tourism Organization.

Senator Allen Chastanet holds a B.A. in Economics and Political Science from Bishop's University in Quebec, Canada as well as an M.Sc. in Development Banking from American University in Washington D.C.

CASTRIES, Saint Lucia (November 8, 2009) - "Image is everything," according to a Caribbean-American image specialist who will be sharing tips on style and elegance with participants at the 18th Caribbean Media Exchange on Sustainable Tourism (CMEx) in Saint Lucia, December 3 to 7, 2009.

Caribbean: The most active and useful tweeters

Not all tweeters are created equal, Twitter is currently surging with Caribbean celebs, business persons, and the likes. I have no scientific basis for this. However, I will state it anyway-those who twitter the most tend to promote themselves well-the more useful and informative their tweets are, the more followers they will have. We (Caribbean Lifestyle Media) recently signed on with Sponsor Tweets to monetize our tweets (I will discuss this further in another post)-Twitter is fast becoming a hub for Caribbean Talents.

Useful tweets

The most useful tweets provide insight into new music, new information, breaking news, the latest buzz, and periodically a perspective of a person you may not normally know. Let's be honest, I may never become best friends with most of the persons who follow us. However, the followers can connect with information they might not normally have-in real time.

New Information

This is critical to online media. I tend to use my "favorite" feature on twitter, this provide a quick tag to further investigation a trending story. I discuss earlier the deal between Bing and Google with twitter. This will be a feature that will be valuable in the real time Caribbean space.

Breaking News

AllianceJamaica twitter page is a prime example of information sharing. This keeps them relevant by providing media companies, like Caribbean Lifestyle Media, with the breaking news about their artistes. Some information we will cover and others we just let it go. Nevertheless, it is good to know, and make the decision to cover story or not.

Every now and then a artiste, company, or random person may say or twit a pic-hilarious at at times. :) That is a connection. Humor is something we can all appreciate. Folkstown: Explore Caribbean conversations

Back in June, I blogged about a new service called "FolksTown.com". At the time, the importance of this service may not have been clear to many. Twitter has since become a household name. I recently discussed WeFollow, a twitter aggregator. Folkstown offers the same type of service, for Caribbean folks on twitter.

There is a ongoing battle at this point for news aggregators. This space is buzzing with activity. Techcrunch recently reported: Everyone is trying to take real time Twitter data and massage it into a useful, filtered news stream. Bit.ly has a new product on the way called Bit.ly Now. Digg is rebuilding the service from the ground up to take advantage of Twitter data in figuring out what’s hot sooner.
