vacation! I had a great time with my folks in India! Had lots of sweets, visited temples, spent time with my family and did some shopping :). Overall the trip was relaxing and satisfying.

I have always admired my Grandpa's artistic works. While I was in India, I used that opportunity to learn how to decorate deities from him. I bought a black and white poster of Lord Krishna and tried my hand at adorning him with beads, velvet, pearl, stones and silk. The more I worked on this, the more involved and interested I became. Ain't he cute? :-)

OK. It's been a while since I blogged. I am still in the vacation mood. I promise I will get back to blogging and come up with nice recipes next week.

Hope you all had a blast on Diwali!!

Mysore Rasam

You will be carried away by this aromatic spicy rasam!

Ingredients:
Tamarind-lime size
Tomato-1 chopped
Hing-1/4 tsp
Rasam powder-1/4 tsp
Cooked thur dal-1 tbsp
Salt

To roast till golden brown in a drop of oil/ghee and grind to a coarse powder:
Thur dal-1 tsp
pepper-1/4 tsp
Red chillies-3
Coriander seeds-1/2 tsp
Channa dal-1/2 tsp
Coconut-1 tbsp
Jeera-1/2 tsp
Coriander leaves-for garnish

Seasoning in 1 tsp ghee:
Mustard seeds-1/2 tsp
Curry leaves-a few
Jeera-1/2 tsp

Method:
Soak tamarind in warm water. So here's wishing all moms happy mother's day!

I was wondering what my mom's favorite dish was? I could hardly recollect 2-3 dishes. Because mom always made sure she cooked food that my Appa and I liked the most. So today, I thought why not make her favorite dhokla. I came across this recipe in Manjula's kitchen. I like watching her videos. I have even met her once in San Diego. Dhoklas came out very soft and yummy. You should try it. I followed the recipe word by word. I steamed the dhoklas in idli plates.
You can find the original recipe here.

Ingredients:
Mix these ingredients together and let it rest for 30 minutes:
Sooji/Rava/Semolina-1 cup
Yogurt-1 cup
Water-1/4 cup
Salt
Hing-a pinch
Turmeric powder-1/4 tsp
Green chilli chopped-1/2 tsp
Coriander leaves(Cilantro) chopped-2 tbsp
Coconut grated-1 tbsp
Lemon juice-2 tsp

To season in 1 tbsp oil:
Jeera-1 tsp(optional)
Mustard seeds-1/2 tsp

Other ingredients:
Eno fruit salt-1 tsp

Method:
Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and jeera and allow it to crackle. Pour this to the batter that has been sitting for 30 minutes.
Add eno fruit salt. Mix the batter well.
Steam on high flame using greased idli plates for 12 minutes.

I am not going to buy dhokla mix from stores anymore. I have the perfect recipe now!

Savory Onion Crackers(Low Fat)

Did you try Savory onion crackers from Red chillies site? I did and I just loved it. I am always looking for low fat snack recipes to go with tea. This one fits the bill. I made some changes to her recipe. It came out crispy and delicious. Onion gives a wonderful flavor to the crackers.

I replaced white flour with whole wheat flour and also added rice flour for crunchiness.
I eliminated butter and baking soda.

Makes about 18 crackers

Ingredients:
Whole Wheat Flour(chapathi flour)-1.5 cups
Rice flour-1/2 cup
Water-1/4 cup
Oil-1/2 cup
Salt-1 tsp
Onion finely chopped-1 medium
Green chillis chopped-1
Hing-1/4 tsp(optional)
Jeera(cumin)-2 tsp
Coriander leaves(cilantro)-a handful chopped finely

Method:
Mix all the above ingredients except oil and start kneading.
Add oil little by little and knead the dough for 5-10 minutes. It should be very soft like a chapathi dough. Make small balls.
Preheat oven to 350 F.
Line the baking tray with foil. Place a ball and flatten it out with your palm into thin circles.
Repeat the same with other balls.
Bake until golden brown. My oven takes longer time to bake than it should normally take. I baked it for about 45 minutes. The actual recipe says 25-30 minutes. Keep an eye on the oven and check if it is done after 25 minutes.

These can be stored in an airtight container for a few days.

Capsicum Masiyal(Capsicum dal)

This dal is very easy to prepare and goes well with rice and curry.

Serves 3

Ingredients:
To pressure cook in water for 3 whistles:
Capsicum-1 medium size chopped into small pieces
Mung dal-1/3 cup
Turmeric powder-1/4 tsp
Hing-1/4 tsp

To fry in 1/2 tsp oil till golden brown and grind to a coarse powder:
Urud dal-2 tsp
Red chillies-2(adjust according to your taste)
Whole pepper-1 tsp
Grated coconut-1/4 cup

Seasoning:
Jeera-1 tsp
Curry leaves-a few
Coconut oil-2 tsp

Method:
Pressure cook the ingredients mentioned above.
Add the ground powder.
Add water and bring it to a consistency slightly thinner than sambar.
Add salt and boil the mixture for 2-3 minutes.
Heat coconut oil in a pan, do the seasoning and add it to the dal mixture.
Serve with rice, ghee and curry.

I thank Foodbuzz for sending me a pack of Mother's circus animal cookies for tasting. I would prefer recipes that will take only 15 minutes from start to end. One exception is-the time taken to cut veggies.

Thanks once again for your lovely entries and I myself can't wait for the round up!

Chocolate Peda

I miss Indian sweets and snacks. It is one of the most auspicious days of the Hindu calendar which brings us luck and success. On this special day, I would like to introduce a deity maker and decorator to you all. He is none other than my Grandpa, Mr. Seshadrinath. He is a retired school principal and teacher. After his retirement, his passion for making idols turned into a full time job. Over the years he has made innumerable pieces that have been a sell out. Apart from adorning idols, he also writes wonderful poems. He is really gifted with so many talents!

He began with the figure of Lord Srinivasa. Initially he was carving out the figure from thermacole and used cloth, zari and beads to beautify the pieces. Now he has started using ceramic, papier mache, plaster of Paris and plastic which are long lasting. The process then involves pasting of beads of various colors, sparkling stones, jewellery, silk cloth(my grandpa shops for these materials himself) over the mould. The devotees are awed by Mr. Seshadrinath's intricate works and authentic representations of idols. A huge image(4 feet tall) of Sri Srinivasa and Goddess Ranganayaki that Mr.Seshadrinath made recently is a masterpiece! Many hotels and famous shops(like GRT, Vasantha Bavan) in Chennai have displayed idols made by my grandpa.

Sri Srinivasa and Goddess Ranganayaki(4 feet tall)

Not to forget scented and sandalwood soaps he uses for carving miniatures of elephants and the like.

Lord Rama

Lord Muruga

Goddess Saraswathi

Vajrakavacham

Each medium-sized deity takes a month to be completed and the time he gets between one order and another, Mr. Seshadrinath utilizes to get earrings, neckpieces and zari for the deities. From now on, I will make it a point to post traditional recipes from the South once in a while. My latest post in my health blog is all about curry leaves. They are very good for you. I almost forgot about this rice until I saw it in Sriharivatsan's blog. I tried this last weekend and loved it.
