1sy May is celebrated in India as Maharashtra Day. On 1st may 1960 Maharashtra gained its statehood, when the state Saurashtra was divided into two states, Maharashtra and Gujurat. Its now a public holiday for people in Maharashtra.It is celebrated as Maharashtra day, in Maharashtra and as a labor day all over India.

The state government organizes the main function in Mumbai. Maharashtra Day is held at Shivaji Park in central Mumbai. The governor of the state takes the salute at the ceremonial parade, comprising members of the state reserve police force, Brihanmumbai Commando Force, home guards, civil defence, fire brigade and city police.

The foundation of the Church of St. Thomas’ was laid by the then the Viceroy of India, H.E. The Rt. Hon. LORD HARDINGE on 29th June, 1912. The Church built in half grounded dressed stones is the craftmenship of the architect then. The worship services were held in both English and Urdu. At one point of time the Hall of St. Thomas’ Church was abanded in 1919, to be occupied by amry press, established in 1886, owned by Taib and Sons which was publishing the Shimla bulletin, Fauji Akhbar, East & West, On Guard, Al Taib and Army Newspaper. The opening of the last named was out in July 5th, 1919. The Hall in which the press was functioning was eyed by many to convert it into a cinema hall. The Hall later was also used for teaching children from less previleged families till the primary level and by 1924 the school was fully established and registered with then the Education Department under the dynamic leadership of the founding Principal Miss Helen Jerwood. Today the school uses the Hall for various curricular and co-curricular activities and accomadates nearly 400 children.

The Church of St. Thomas’ was converted into St. Thomas’ School in 1924 and a Vernacular Printing School was born to provide education to Christian children. Miss Helen Jerwood was the founder of this institution and served as principal till 1939.

The National park issue sheets  can be found in five varieties . Four sheets with traffic lights in different corners and one without traffic lights. It was a difficult task to unearth five varieties and now the research team with tremendous efforts is bringing another masterpiece variety . The sheets are listed  for ready reference. Karpoor Chandra Kulish, the man who started Rajasthan Patrika the widely read and well known Hindi newspaper, was born in Soda Village of Tonk district of Rajasthan. He started his career in journalism as an employee in a newspaper. Karpoor Chandra ‘Kulish’ breathed his last on 17th January, 2006.

Great Britain  issued stamps to mark the Millennium 2000. FDC issued on 7 Sep 1999 . Cover and stamp on Farming.

A First Day Cover with Four stamps issued by Sri Lanka on 2004 Athens Olympics. The stamps depict Olympic disciplines Swimming (Rs 4.50 ) Athletics (Rs 16.50 & Rs 20.00) and Shooting (Rs 17.00 ).

As per practice and also communicated by post to all members next meeting of West Delhi Philatelic Club is scheduled to be held on (Sunday) 20th May 2012 (i.e; 3rd Sunday of the month) at the below venue (Time:-10.30 A.M. to 1.30P.M).
