Samsung recently announced the new Android powered Galaxy Ace Duos smartphone. As the name suggest, it is a dual-SIM Android smartphone. The Samsung Galaxy Ace Duos is the dual-SIM variant of the highly popular Samsung Galaxy Ace. This handset allows the users to manage their work and personal lives with one smartphone. It runs on the Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) Operating System. However, this device might get the Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) update in the near future. Earlier this year, Sony Mobile Communications unveiled the unique Sony Xperia Sola smartphone. It is the company’s first device to feature the unique “Floating Touch” technology. This technology allows the users to navigate the web by hovering their finger above the screen, without actually touching the screen. Once the link is found, it can be highlighted and a simple tap will load the page.

This handset was already up for pre-order at major online retailers from the last couple of weeks. Today, Sony Mobile Communications officially launched this amazing handset in India. This device runs on the Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) OS. However, Sony will roll out the Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) update shortly after launch. Sony has also partnered with Tata Docomo to offer free 3G data usage as well as exclusive games for the Xperia Sola owners.

On the other hand, Tata Docomo 2G pre-pay customers will get 3 GB free data usage for 90 days and 300 minutes of local Tata to Tata calling, while Tata Docomo 2G postpay customers will get 1 GB free data usage per month for the next three months, along with 100 minutes of local Tata to Tata calling per month for three months.

There are two parts of Bing which is powered by Nokia :

Traffic Information : Now you can even get the traffic info on Bing map from countries like India where Nokia has a very strong presence.  As Nokia Maps is available  in 24 countries (Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UAE, UK and US), Bing Maps will show live traffic for all of them.

This was something never thought of going beyond US boundaries but now its a great news for all of them.

Geocoding Algorithm : Bing Maps now use the Nokia geocoding algorithms which helps to find address more accurately which by taking latitude and longitude information and connects that to a readable address. This means you can find stuff much more accurately and this forms the basis of Nokia Drive and hence exact turn by turn navigation.

Summary : The biggest advantage will go to the Non Nokia Windows Phone users who will be able to use the Nokia Maps without having the app but with default Bing installed.

Said that this is the starting of how Bing will slowly turn into Nokia Maps or you can say it might just remain a wrapper name of the actual powerful Nokia maps. I dont know but it would be cool that Bing should have the label which says “Powered By Nokia Maps”

In the days leading up to the Facebook IPO, one thing that pundits loved to harp on was its weakness in the mobile segment. One of the cornerstones of Facebook is its Photos feature, which helped it to gain rapid traction in the first place. However, in the mobile segment, Facebook lacked a compelling app to leverage this advantage. Not only is uploading videos to Facebook through its iPhone and Android apps cumbersome, but viewing it also is a less than pleasant experience. As a result, upstarts like Instagram that made sharing photos from your mobile phone elegant and pain free quickly gained popularity. Zuckerberg himself realized this and went on to shell out a billion dollars to prevent Instagram from falling into its competitors laps.

However, long before Facebook purchased Instagram, it had set about to fix the void in its mobile offering. A team was hard at work to come up with a dedicated Instagramesque photography app. A short while back, Facebook unveiled its creation on the iTunes App Store.

The new app is called Facebook Camera. While Facebook wouldn’t win any awards for the name, it pretty much nails everything about the app. Facebook Camera is Instagram with a few differences. It features multiple photo effects to lend your snaps the ‘artistic’ touch, it enables quick sharing of photos, and it has a photo stream that just contains pics shared by your social graph. Its biggest advantage compared to Instagram is that it supports batch photo upload, which allows you to club multiple related photos together. However, it also has its share of disadvantages. The biggest one is that Facebook Camera doesn’t allow sharing of pics across social networks. No one really expected Facebook to make it easy for you to share your pics on Twitter or Google Plus, but this is still a very real drawback. Also, since the Facebook Camera photo stream includes pics that were not shared through the mobile app, not all photos look as classy as Instagram. Of course, folks who have a strong disdain for the artificial photographs popularized by Instagram will probably appreciate this.

The big question is how does Facebook Camera fit into Facebook’s future strategy. It will directly compete with Facebook’s Instagram, which is the current leader in the mobile social photography app segment. A Facebook spokesperson told TechCrunch, “As Mark asserted, we’re committed to building and growing Instagram independently, so I anticipate some healthy competition.”

Most people believe that Facebook’s acquisition of Instagram was a defensive move rather than an aggressive one. Zuckerberg didn’t want Google or Twitter to get a boost from Instagram’s existing popularity, so he acquired it. He had to promise to keep it independent, as otherwise Instagram wouldn’t have allowed itself to be taken over by Facebook. However, this also means that Instagram’s social graph is going to remain distinct from Facebook in the foreseeable future. Instagram doesn’t really tie into Facebook, and augment Facebook Photos. Even though Instagram is under Facebook’s control, Zuckerberg will obviously prefer if people used Facebook’s social graph to share photos on the mobile. It will increase the stickiness of the platform, and strengthen the lock that Facebook has on a user. This is probably why Facebook went ahead with the release of Facebook Camera, even after announcing the acquisition of Instagram.

The explosion of personalized web has pretty much clobbered online privacy to its death bed. No matter where you go, no matter what you do, someone or the other is tracking your surfing habits. The worst part is that this practice has become so rampant that most of us have come to accept online tracking as standard affair. Mozilla has been trying to tackle the problem of behavioural tracking on the web for quite some time. Couple of years back, it introduced the “Do Not Track” header, which has already been adopted by Internet Explrer, Safari, and Opera. Now, Mozilla has released an experimental add-on to showcase how personal data is being tracked across the web.

Earlier this month, Gary Kovacs, CEO of Mozilla Corporation, unveiled Collusion. Collusion is a Firefox extension that visualizes the spider-web of interaction between websites and third-party trackers that often track you without your explicit permission. Collusion is essentially a reporting tool whose purpose is to make netizens realize just how grave the situation is. My Collusion graph is peppered with third-party tracking website that I never explicitly browsed to. Personalized web isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It can increase engagement, reduce user frustration, and improve productivity. However, the mad rush of advertisers to track users without their knowledge and permission is something that is deeply worrying. Kovacs very righty remarked that “with every click of the mouse and every touch of the screen, we are like Hansel and Gretel leaving breadcrumbs of our personal information everywhere we travel through the digital woods”.

Last month, Apple revealed iPhone TV ads featuring Samuel L. Jackson and Zooey Deschanel. Today, the company has begun running  a pair of new television ads for the iPhone 4S and Siri featuring actor John Malkovich.

Turns out, the past two celebrity ads scored very well with viewers, registering higher scores from advertising tracking firm Ace Metrix than any other iPhone 4S ad released so far this year.

Malkovich is best know for his acting style and his iPhone 4S ad reflects his somewhat peculiar persona. The first ad is called “Life”:

Malkovich: Life.

Siri: Try and be nice to people. Avoid eating fat. Read a good book every now and then. Get some walking in. And try to live together in peace and harmony with people of all creeds and nations.

Malkovich: That’s pretty spectacular advice, actually. Thank you. I enjoyed this chat immensely. You are very eloquent.

Siri: That’s nice of you to say.

The second ad is called “Joke”:

It is not every day Apple disappoints me, but I found these ads to be disappointing! The bottom line is that these ads are monotonous, depressing, and terrible. Remember when Apple’s iPhone 4S/Siri ads used to be fun to watch, struck a cord, and magical? You know, ads like “iCloud Harmony” and “Roadtrip“? And my favorite, “Santa“. That ad was genius and magical.

I hope at some point Apple gets rid of the celebrities and brings normal people back.

The Linux Mint blog has announced the release of Linux Mint 13 codenamed Maya. Maya saw an RC release just a week ago, and this final release came sooner than expected. There have only been a few minor bug fixes from the RC release.

Linux Mint 13 Maya sports some interesting features. The boot splash screen on Mint 13 has been replaced with a black screen that shows nothing. The Mint ISO image is no longer 700 MB in size, and so it cannot be burned to a CD. However, there is a guide on remastering Linux Mint by removing extra packages and shrinking the ISO size. Mint4Win, the Windows installer for Linux Mint is functional only on the 64-bit ISOs, although it is present on both the 64-bit and the 32-bit version.

Although based on Ubuntu, Linux Mint is competing head on with it and surpasses Ubuntu by a huge margin in Distrowatch page hit ranking. Now, that is not an accurate indicator of who is using which of Linux Mint and Ubuntu but it might be an indicator of the popularity of these Linux distros. Linux Mint is indeed popular.

Earlier today, Yahoo released their new browser extension for Google Chrome and Firefox and browser for iPhone and iPad after news leaked about it. However, it looks like that they did it in a hurry and made a huge blunder while releasing their Google chrome extension.

As spotted by @nikcub,  Yahoo has included their private key with the Chrome extension. This private certificate will allow other users to sign their applications as Yahoo. I was able to confirm that the file was available inside the extension.

Nik further demonstrates the vulnerability of the leaked mistakenly included private certificate key in a detailed blog post which you can read here. While the extension would not be a problem currently , it would allow other scammers or phishers to pass off rogue extensions as those created by Yahoo or just re-upload the original extension with something rogue.

As a user, you should remove the current extension till Yahoo fixes this problem. To get rid of this problem, Yahoo would need to create a new certificate and sign their extension again and Google would probably have to negate the old certificate while installing extensions.

This is not the first time that such a blunder has happened when news has leaked hours before a release, but this is definitely a very big problem on Yahoo’s part.

Once installed, the extension appears as a search box at the bottom of the browser. You can search for any term and the results are shown in the form of small thumbnails, you can scroll the results to see more. Clicking on any result will open the site.

You can also add to favorites, sync the bookmarks with another device using your ID and also add it to read it later list.

Axis for iPad/iPhone:

For iPad and iPhone axis is available as a full fledged web browser with almost all features of a normal browser including bookmarks sync, tabbed browsing etc.

Axis also bypasses the ads that appear on search results pages which makes it clutter free. On iPhone where there is restriction on screen space, Axis seems to be a bit congested with too many features.

The desktop version isn’t perfect either, but does the job pretty decently. You can easily scroll the search results without actually leaving the current page and moreover the results are available in thumbnails, so you can decide before actually opening the page.

I have seen this stupidity go around in the past where users spread messages saying Facebook will charge for new profiles, and I think the hoax message is spreading again just like those chain email messages where you would die in 7 days if you don’t forward that email or text messages to 10  people in 10 minutes of receiving it.

Such type of messages never killed anyone, unless you consider the tombstone above which is intended for fun. Similarly, you will not gain any advantage by circulating a message to others saying that Facebook is going paid because they invested heavily in the Facebook Timeline which you can’t even remove.

Earlier this week, it was reported that OS X Mountain Lion will introduce automatic app downloads to Macs. This feature was added in the latest developer preview of the operating system. The search for new features continue, and now it is reported that offline reading list mode and iOS-like dictation will be added.

Gear Live briefly gives a description of the offline reading list option, which is an addition to the Safari bookmarking featured that was introduced in OS X Lion. Reading List also syncs saved articles across all devices. The reports notes that a warning screen in Safari on OS X Mountain Lion notifies that articles saved to Reading List are available for viewing even when the user’s Mac is not connected to the Internet.

When you aren’t connected to a network and pull up Safari, you get a message that tells you that you aren’t connected to the Internet, but that your “Reading List articles are available for viewing while you are offline.”

In addition, 9to5Mac reports that a keyboard shortcut has been listed in the latest developer preview of OS X Mountain Lion, which suggests that built-in dictation capabilities will be added to the Mac.

All these options are further sub divided into different options which we can select to specify what all the areas we want to program to scan. The program can also create a system restore point and take the backup of the system registry so that we can undo any changes that were not proper. You just need to select the options and click a single button. The program will then scan all the specified areas and will come up with a list of all the issues that it found. You can then use it to repair the problems.

The program is very fast and it can cleanup your system within a few minutes. Apart from these features, it also comes with some other handy utilities like a system information tool, a start up optimizer and an uninstall manager. But before using this utility, it is better to create a system restore point as one can never be sure as to what it may delete.  A pro version of the software is also available which comes with some advanced and pro features.

Now according to one of their blog posts which we missed, they have made a deal with Dropbox, where if you install Dropbox using Soluto on a different computer, you can earn 500 MB space.

However, make sure the account installed on the other computer is new to Dropbox and it is done via your referral link. The referral link has to be placed when you are on the creation page. A total of 32Gb of space can be gained using this method.

Steps to follow :

1. Login to your Soluto Account and install it on your PC. You will need to Install Soluto to the other pc or any pc where you intend to install Dropbox and also manage that computer.
2. Now First select the PC and then Go to the Application List and search Dropbox.
3. Choose to install and there you will need to register an account with dropbox. You can create this on the computer owners behalf but make sure to use your referal link.
4. One the target computer is turned on and connected to Internet, Soluto installed on that machine will start installing it.

Just make sure to tell your partner to use the same email id when he or she logins to the desktop client for Dropbox. This will complete the process.

So its basically a SMS sending service but has certain advantages. When you share a link of any web page, the user gets to see a mobile optimized website instead of a web page which is made for  desktop. Second you not only send just whatever is on a web page but also a text from your email or a custom message. Lastly, all the messages which is sent using this service is listed on your account and can be accessed via the extension interface.

Good news is Windows 8 team know this “Problem” and hence have come up with a solution which will help you get into this advanced option without doing a lot of hard work.

Windows 8 Advance Settings :

The advance settings in Windows 8 is at the same place where you will find Windows Refresh and Reset. Once you launch it, it completely replaces whatever is on your existing screen and gives you access to the most commonly used options i.e

• Open Boot menu to boot into any other OS installed on the same PC. This means you will be able to boot into another OS right from Windows 8. I remember this was one of the most demanded feature we had a lot of hacks for this.

• System Restore
• System Image Recovery
• Automatic Repairing : This will be used when windows fails to load.

How will I be able to troubleshoot if Windows 8 gets hanged when booting or before even I can Login ?

Thats a pretty good question. Windows 8 is designed such that in case of issues like these, this advance settings or the boot menu option will automatically showup, giving you clear option to recover your Windows 8 PC using Options like Refresh, Reset, Disk Image etc.

One thing, which is good, about this troubleshooting option is that it is smart enough to find a solution for the problem and will guide you to fix it, and  if it can fixed. However if nothing works, it will launch the repair options to nuke the problem.

If you an advance users, you can choose the Windows Startup Settings, which will have options like disabling the driver signatures, automatic restart on system failure, debugging mode, boot logging, safe mode and disable early launch anti malware protection.

How this will work on Old Hardware :

This will same for all the devices except that getting into BIOS, for older devices, will be using the interrupt keys i.e. F2 or F12. Now if you are wondering if you will have time, then the answer is Yes, because the old hardware will not boot in 2 seconds and hence you will have enough time to press and hold the keys to interrupt and get the boot menu.

The Hot Key to boot into this option :

If you are not logged into Windows 8 yet, but are on the login screen, you can pres shift and restart together to boot into this menu or you can lunch this from command prompt using Shutdown.exe /r /o

Once you install the add-on or extension, you need to register with the service using your mobile phone. The service will send an SMS and you need to confirm your number using the confirmation code. Once you have set up the service, you can send any number of text message which contains text, images, videos, web pages etc.

You can use the service from the context menu by selecting any text, links or images.

It’s quite possible that you might have one or few such background process that is taking place on one of the tabs and due to which you might not be able to switch tabs at all, or the other tabs are not closing, or just the whole thing is not working. This kind of processs are sometimes taken care by the browser itself by notifying but when it is not, you need an extension named as Suspend Background Tabs.

Suspend Background Tabs is an experimental extension for Firefox which tries to make Firefox more responsive by suspending such tabs and hence saving CPU Time. SO now any program which uses Javascript or Ajax to pull information, will not work. To test, load Facebook on one of the tabs and switch to another tab. You would notice that you will not see any new notification unless you switch and wait for few seconds.

Now many of you might prefer to have background process working for some of the websites. So for such websites, you can pin them by making a right click over the tab and then choose Option of Pin as App Tab. Then under Extension Option, you can choose to enable background process for such tabs.

What is not suspended :

Tabs which are downloading a file or have videos which you are buffering, remain unaffected by this extension.

Suggestions :

• A white list of websites which the extension can skip automatically.
• Allow user to choose if they want to buffer videos or suspend that too.

Overall my experience using this was pretty smooth. I have loads of tabs open all the time, for which, I prefer using all three browsers but with this at least one can be skipped. However I have to be smart enough to always remember that I dont forget to pin websites which I need the background task to work.
