Microsoft is desperate to turn around their online division and has been putting in a lot of effort. Last week, they announced the first major redesign of MSN in a decade. Now, they have revamped Bing video search page.

The new Bing video search page incorporates high quality content from around the web. It includes MSN’s original programming as well as videos from other services like Hulu, ABC, and YouTube. Bing Videos will be serving everything from amateur videos and movie trailers to full length TV shows. Bing Videos currently features more than 900 TV shows, all of which is arranged alphabetically and organized into genre based categories. Individual episodes are extremely easy to find as they are grouped according to the season.

The new Bing Videos has already started rolling out and should be available to all users within a few days. You can access the preview by going to bing.com/videos/browse.

If you are using Windows Live Writer to compose posts to your blog, then you might have heard about Windows Live Writer Backup tool. Once you authorize conversationlist, it will create a new list (called “conversationlist”) and automatically add any username you mention in your tweets. The lists are rebuilt daily, and contain a maximum of 25 tweeps at any point of time. The ones you stop having conversation with are automatically removed.

Techie Buzz Verdict

Conversationlist is a good idea. However, in its current state it may be too simplistic to be really useful. There is no way to increase the 25 user per list limit. You can’t disable auto-deletion of usernames from the list or adjust the duration of inactivity after which a username will be deleted.

Whether you find conversationlist useful or not will actually depend on your Twitter usage pattern. People who enjoy engaging in conversation with like-minded, interesting tweeps should find this useful. For others it may be of little use. GRUB 2.0, GRUB version 1.97 had a major security issue which allowed users to login by entering only a few characters of the password correctly. Only the sequence of characters had to be correct and for that matter, even one of the characters entered as password worked.

A recent bug-report from debian.org says:

GRUB accepts user input as valid password as long as user enters some first
characters of password correctly.

I.e. if /boot/grub/grub.cfg reads:

set superusers=”user1″
password user1 password1

Then user can enter “p”, “pa”, “pas” etc, and GRUB will ‘eat it’ as correct
password.

Given this, the GRUB team addressed the flaw with the release of GRUB 1.97.1 which has a fix to the problem. Apart from this, the new version of GRUB also addresses a build problem with the Mac OS X kernel, support for which was added only in the latest GRUB 2.0.

Given the hype GRUB 2.0 had created with its rewritten code, object-oriented model and support for multiple kernels, security issues like these, makes it look like a hoopla to the Linux beginners, who are more interested in no-one entering their computer by typing just anything at the password prompt than all the developments of extended file system support and kernel support.

If any of the Windows system files are missing or are corrupted, Windows may not behave as expected. For example, some Windows functions may not work, or Windows may crash. Windows 7, like previous version, has an inbuilt tool called system File Checker tool (SFC.exe) which scans for missing or corrupted system files and repairs them. Using System File Checker tool (SFC.exe), you can determine which file is causing the issue, and then replace the file.

To start System File Checker (SFC.exe), follow the steps below.

1. Open an elevated command prompt, i.e command prompt run as an administrator. To do this, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.

2. Now type the command sfc /scannow and press enter. The System File Checker will start checking the system.

This process might take some time as it has to scan all the system files for errors.

3. Once the scan is complete it will display the result to inform whether there are any issues with the system files.

The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions. In case the tool is not able to fix the error, it is better to restore the system to a previous state using System restore.

This coupled with the fact that Taskbar Texturizer doesn’t create any taskbar entry, leads to the application window getting lost among other open windows, once it looses focus. It also seems to have some compatibility issues with Winsnap. However, these are minor issues. Taskbar Texturizer does what it is supposed to. It uses very little resources and provides a quick and easy way to spice up your system.

OpenOffice.org is planning to give keyboards a run for their usability with the release of its 18 button mouse in February, next year. In spite of all these features, the mouse still takes us back into the era of wired and corded mice, where on the other hand, more and more companies are coming up with cordless mice, though ,this will hopefully change in future models. Rest assured, this mouse will be a first buy on any gamers list.

4. Next, you would want to customize the widget according to the look and feel of your blog. Switch to the appearance tab, and you can start customizing the widget. You can choose the color of the widget, tweets and links according to your style.

The dimensions tab lets you choose a custom size of the widget, and the widget can be completely customized in appearance. After that hit the “Grab code” button and you can integrate the widget in your blog, website or social networking profiles.

Google recently announced open-sourcing of its JavaScript library- Closure, a JavaScript compression tools-the Closure Compiler, a code inspector- the Closure Inspector and a set of Closure Templates.

Closure will be a powerful tool-set for web developers at large. Being a cross-browser compatible library, Closure features some of the widely used helper functions and UI widgets which can be recognized from popular Google web-apps. 6. Minimal Navigation: - Remove the navigational links from your landing page which can distract the user’s mind. By removing the navigational links you can control the content on your landing pages which you want your users to see.
