<span lang="EN-US" style="color: blue; font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 13.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: IT;">“I started building marble track machines years ago using Lego. I experimented with all sorts of crazy ways for the marbles to descend. One was a rocker that shunted a stream of dropping marbles one-by-one to alternating sides. If you cascade three of these toggles down to the left, every marble flips the rightmost toggle, every second marble flips the middle toggle, and every fourth flips the leftmost. Interpret each toggle’s state as left = 0 and right = 1, and you have a binary counter. Add more toggles, and it can count more.”

A new quantization condition for parity-violating three-dimensional gravity" (pdf).

Lyrics:

<span style="background-color: white; E' l'immagine stereotipata dello scienziato che la giornalista Allie Wilkinson cerca di combattere tramite il sito "This Is What a Scientist Looks Like". Buona estate a tutti! :)

Da leggere
- 30 blog scientifici: gli esordiAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5515469089512834017.post-88667863705465017802013-07-30T14:59:00.000+02:002013-07-30T14:59:30.065+02:00Disney research - Science at playNon sapevo dell'esistenza di laboratori di ricerca targati Walt Disney. L'ho scoperto oggi. Come essi stessi affermano "Our algorithm first computes reliable depth estimates specifically around object boundaries instead of interior regions, by operating on individual light rays instead of image patches. More homogeneous interior regions are then processed in a fine-to-coarse procedure rather than the standard coarse-to-fine approaches. At no point in our method is any form of global optimization performed." (fonte: Science, Space & Robots)

Courtesy of: School of Computer Science/Carnegie Mellon University

The average size of the social network is shown to be a crucial variable ruling the emergence of a prevalent cultural trait shared by a majority of individuals. We distinguish between the case of a social network that changes while individuals develop their culture through the influence of others and the case of social networks which change slowly so that individuals reach a stable trait value before their social network changes appreciably. In both cases, no shared cultural trait emerges unless social network size is larger than a critical value. We also discuss how the formation of a shared cultural trait depends on the strength of mutual imitation, random factors that affect individuals’ decisions, and external influences such as social institutions."

Hippocampal volume correlated with the amount of time spent as a taxi driver (positively in the posterior and negatively in the anterior hippocampus). These data are in accordance with the idea that the posterior hippocampus stores a spatial representation of the environment and can expand regionally to accommodate elaboration of this representation in people with a high dependence on navigational skills.

Bell's Theorem from the Wolfram Demonstrations Project by S.
