The basic qualifications to become a NASA flight director are simply being a U.S. citizen and having a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science, or mathematics, according to a press release from NASA.

However, over and above being a U.S. citizen and having a relevant degree from an accredited institution, the successful candidates will also need substantial related, progressively responsible professional experience, including time-critical decision-making experience in high-stress, high-risk environments.

Although many NASA flight directors have previously been flight controllers working in mission control, it is not a prerequisite to apply.

Those chosen as NASA flight directors will lead human spaceflight missions to the International Space Station, Artemis missions to the Moon, and, eventually, the first human missions to Mars.

Flight directors lead teams of flight controllers, astronauts, and commercial and international partners in real-time mission execution and risk management. In preparation for a mission, flight directors collaborate with engineering, safety, and program partners to ensure operational plans align with spacecraft capabilities and mission objectives.

A press release from The University of Notre Dame explained that the soft robot can twist around obstacles and extend up to 30 feet into narrow void spaces while carrying a camera at its tip.

Acoustic sensors distributed along its body could also help map a route through the debris, giving search and rescue teams the information they need to locate survivors and plan how to reach them.

It is worth appreciating that when a building collapses, first responders face a high-stakes challenge: Find people trapped beneath concrete and debris without putting rescue crews at greater risk.

Across the country, urban search and rescue teams are called on to respond when disasters leave people trapped in collapsed structures. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has 28 urban search and rescue task forces nationwide, responding to emergencies ranging from hurricanes and tornadoes to structural collapses and other disasters.

Current tools are useful but have limitations. Specially trained dogs can detect human presence beneath rubble, and acoustic devices can help determine depth. Search cameras can provide a view inside, but because they are typically mounted on telescoping poles, they are limited by the narrow, twisting voids common in collapsed structures.

Extending the reach of search and rescue teams

It is against this background that Margaret McGuinness, assistant professor of aerospace and mechanical engineering at the University of Notre Dame, and her team have developed the flexible, inflatable “vine robot” that offers another approach.

“Every second counts when you’re trying to rescue someone who might be trapped after a building collapses,” McGuinness said.

Developed in collaboration with researchers at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, the technology is designed to improve situational awareness—not replace the people doing the rescuing.

Built with first responders, not just for them

First responders are playing an active role in shaping how the technology is tested and refined.

McGuinness and her team are developing the technology in close partnership with search and rescue professionals who understand firsthand how it would need to perform in the field.

McGuinness and her team have tested the Soft Pathfinding Robotic Observation Unit, or SPROUT, with urban search and rescue professionals at a mock collapsed building in Massachusetts and are now working closely with Clay Fire’s regional search and rescue team in South Bend, Indiana.

Their feedback is helping researchers adapt the robot to the complex conditions that responders encounter in the field, helping teams narrow their search and better understand an unstable environment before entering it.

That capability could eventually have applications beyond disaster response. Similar technology could support national security and humanitarian response efforts by helping assess damaged structures in conflict zones or other high-risk environments before sending personnel inside.

Broadcast live from Hatfield Media’s studios in Louisville, the marathon marked CN’s 25th anniversary with 25 consecutive hour-long sessions designed to help people build the skills and confidence to navigate an increasingly digital world. Nearly 40 competitors hurled homemade, human-powered flying machines from a 25- plus-foot platform, with over 30,000 fans looking on, according to a press release from Red Bull.

The iconic event has a historic legacy in the Twin Cities – in 2010’s Red Bull Flugtag St. Paul, team Major Trouble and the Dirty Dixies flew 207 feet, smashing a previous world record that had been in place for over 10 years.

The afternoon began with a national anthem sung by powerhouse vocalist Brent Rice, a sky dive from Red Bull Air Force, and a dive off the Flight Deck from judge and Red Bull Cliff Diving athlete Ellie Smart. From there, the teams took to the skies, competing for the highest combined score across distance, creativity, and showmanship.

“It’s great to have people come together like this,” said Brian Durand of the locally based winning team, Dunwoody Daredevils. “It’s really very special for the Dunwoody College of Technology, and it was a great opportunity for the entire team.”

Top Performers – Final Results

• 1st Place: Dunwoody Daredevils (Minneapolis, MN)
o Comprised of engineering faculty and students from Dunwoody College’s Experimental Vehicles Division, the team brought serious technical firepower to their first Red Bull Flugtag.

• 2nd Place and People’s Choice: Glide or Die! (Saint Paul, MN)
o The team brought Great Lakes history to the flight deck with a Minnesotasized tribute to the Edmund Fitzgerald, disguised as a legitimately engineered glider. In addition to taking second place, the team was voted the winner of the People’s Choice Award.

• 3rd Place: Wergin A Fly (Allenton, WI)
o The Noah’s Ark-themed craft is comprised of a team that loves rock climbing, rafting, canyoneering, and cliff jumping – as well as generally finding creative ways to test gravity, with a self-taught paramotor pilot leading the charge.

The Judging Panel

The judging panel was comprised of Olympic ice hockey gold medalist and Team USA Women’s Hockey Captain, Hilary Knight; legendary snowmobile racer, X Games gold medalist and world record holder, Levi LaValee; professional diver and Red Bull Cliff Diving world champion Ellie Smart; ultra endurance athlete Mark Dowdle; and social media creator, actor and entrepreneur Brent Rivera.

“Our inspiration was really the history of Lake Superior and the SS Edmund Fitzgerald and the fact that it was lost 50 years ago,” said David Washington of team Glide Or Die. “We wanted to pay tribute to it […] It feels great to be crowned the Red Bull Flugtag Minneapolis People’s Choice Champion, and we just want to say thanks to all the people who helped us and our families that were patient with us along the way.”

Teams traveled from across the country to compete, but Minneapolis pride was on full display as many crews incorporated Minnesota and Midwest-inspired themes into their aircraft designs. From cowboys riding giant muskies to flying moose, loons, mallards, and ducks, the vehicles showcased the creativity, humor, and imagination that have become hallmarks of Red Bull Flugtag.

Between flights, fans were treated to high-energy entertainment that kept the lake buzzing and ensured the action never slowed. Highlights included a slapshot challenge featuring Olympians Hilary Knight, Laila Edwards, and Quinn Hughes, who launched foam pucks into the crowd and delivered an unforgettable moment for fans

Previously, crash reconstructions would light up a bystander’s brain, conjuring up a memory, and a scratched helmet would wind up lighting up the memory packet the operator gives him/her weeks later, the one that will either reinforce or quell the original suspect’s recollection, line by line.

The Packet Is a Lot Richer Than People Assume

Shared e-scooters and e-bikes are effectively rolling sensor platforms. They stream location, speed, battery state, and vehicle events back to the operator on a continuous basis, and cities have been standardizing how that data flows for years. The Mobility Data Specification, maintained by the Open Mobility Foundation, is the API layer most large operators use to share trip, geofence, and vehicle-status information with municipal agencies.

For a personal injury lawyer, that pipeline is where the real story of a crash lives. The interesting fields aren’t the ones a rider ever sees in the app. They’re the ones logged in the background, and they tend to cluster around three questions defense and plaintiff teams both want answered.

• Speed governor state. Was the top-speed cap active at the moment of the crash, or had the device unlocked to a higher limit because the GPS placed it outside a restricted zone?
• Geofence transitions. Did the electric scooter cross into a no-ride or slow-ride polygon in the seconds before impact, and did the throttle actually respond the way the policy said it should?
• Firmware version notes. Which build was on the device that day, and did the operator’s own release notes flag any change to braking behavior, acceleration curves, or speed enforcement?

Speed Governors Are Not as Simple as a Number

The speed cap on a shared scooter is a moving target. Most fleet devices are configured to top out somewhere around 15 to 20 mph on open roads, but that ceiling can drop to a walking pace inside a downtown polygon or a park path, and it can lift again the moment the GPS says the device has left. When a rider says the scooter “suddenly took off,” the telemetry may actually back that up: a boundary crossing, a speed-limit change command from the operator, and an acceleration spike a second later.

It cuts the other way, too. If the log shows the governor was engaged, and the device never exceeded 12 mph, a defense expert can use that to challenge witnesses who remember something faster. Neither side gets to guess once the packet is on the table.

Geofence Logs Decide Where Fault Actually Sits

Geofence data does more than describe the ride. It also reveals how an operator configured its system, offering useful tips and tricks for understanding where digital boundaries may differ from real-world requirements. If a city required a slow zone around a school and the operator’s polygon was drawn 40 feet short, that gap shows up in the shared feed.

If the device entered a no-ride area and the throttle didn’t cut, that shows up too. Suddenly the question isn’t only whether the rider was careless. It’s even whether the fleet was configured the way the permit required. That is a genuinely new lane of liability. A pedestrian struck on a sidewalk where scooters were supposed to be governed down to a crawl argues against the operator that didn’t exist a decade ago, and the evidence for it lives on the operator’s own servers.

Firmware Notes Are Where the Fleet-Wide Story Hides

Every over-the-air update to a shared fleet is documented internally. Release notes describe what changed, which models got the push, and when. In a single-crash case, that paperwork looks like trivia. Meta VR Glasses are designed to offer a more comfortable alternative to traditional VR headsets. They weigh about 100 grams and use a two-part system, with the glasses handling the display and sensors while a small connected puck provides computing power, battery and storage. This design removes the need for heavy straps and keeps the glasses open enough for users to remain aware of their surroundings.

The glasses feature a 5K Infinite Display with micro-OLED panels, 37 pixels per degree and compact pancake lenses designed for sharp, detailed images. Dolby Vision provides richer colors and contrast, while Dolby Atmos delivers spatial audio through the frames. Meta has also built its AI assistant into the system, allowing users to control apps and experiences using voice commands, eye movements and natural hand gestures without controllers.

Entertainment is a major focus, with Meta positioning the glasses as a personal cinema and virtual courtside seat. They are IMAX Enhanced certified and will support 3D movies through services including Disney+, Prime Video, YouTube, Netflix alternatives and other major platforms. Users will also be able to explore themed viewing environments and immersive versions of selected films, while partnerships with studios and filmmakers are expected to expand the 3D content library.

Sports will also be part of the experience, with Meta working with ESPN and other partners on immersive live events. Users can watch games from a front-row perspective, including 180-degree views and high-resolution streaming. The company says its sports lineup will eventually include events from leagues and organizations such as MLB, NBC Sports, TNT Sports and UFC.

Beyond entertainment, Meta VR Glasses are designed to function as a portable workspace. Users can create large virtual screens or multiple displays while still seeing their physical surroundings through full-color passthrough. A flat surface can also be used as a virtual keyboard and touchpad, while gaming support includes more than 75 hand-controlled games and access to hundreds of additional titles through Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Meta is also introducing hologram calling, which creates a digital version of the user that reflects their expressions and reactions in real time. The hologram can appear naturally in another person’s space with spatial audio, while people joining from phones or computers can see it on their screens. Together, these features show Meta’s broader goal of combining entertainment, productivity, gaming and communication in a lightweight pair of glasses.
