10 Tips for Online Auction Bidders

Online auctions are more popular than ever, enabling users to find everything from collectibles to car parts. Most auction transactions go smoothly. Auction fraud, however, is also more prevalent. You may never receive the item that you won, or the item that you receive may not be what the seller promised. You may even discover that a seller has stolen your personal information. Fortunately, if you do a little research and follow these tips, you can help avoid auction fraud.

1. Research the auction site
If you've never used an online auction site, read the site's Help file before you place a bid. Also make sure you understand the site's privacy statement and its user agreement. For example, after you place a bid, most auction sites will require you to pay for the item if you win, even if you no longer want the item or decide your bid was a mistake. Make sure to check for insurance and guarantees. Some sites will reimburse your money if you've been scammed.

2. Research the seller
Ask for a telephone number and verify it. Be wary of sellers who ask that you send payment to a post office box instead of a physical address. Many auction sites track a seller's history and encourage feedback from buyers concerning their experiences with sellers. Ask questions before dealing with sellers with no feedback or no sales history.

3. Research the item
Learn about an item before you bid on it. Find an expert on that particular item and ask if she can authenticate it. Compare prices on other auctions for similar items or even at online stores. Ask questions if the auction price is considerably lower than what you can find elsewhere.

4. Watch for items with shipping dates that exceed 20 days after receipt of payment
A delayed shipping date could be a sign of possible fraud. Many auction sites require that sellers ship items within a certain number of days after payment. Check the site's user agreement to find out if the seller is within that time frame. If the auction doesn't specify an estimated shipping time, contact the seller. If the seller doesn't give you a straight answer, you'd be wise to bid elsewhere.
Hint: Before you bid, ask sellers if they plan to ship the item using a parcel tracking service. If your shipment is delayed you can contact the seller, who should be able to tell you exactly when the item is due to arrive or give you the shipment tracking information.

5. Be wary of deals that sound too good to be true, especially around the holidays
An auction with a starting price much lower than other auctions of similar items may indicate a lower quality product, or it could mean the item was stolen.

6. Never be lured from the auction site with the promise of a better deal
You may receive e-mail messages from strangers offering items similar to those which you've recently bid on, but at a lower price. Some scammers use this technique to entice people away from trusted auction sites. Know that when you participate outside of the site, you are no longer protected by the site's privacy and security policies.

7. Never pay with cash
Also be wary of requests for bank or wire transfers and sellers who want to be paid in foreign currencies.

8. Question sellers who ask you to send payment to an address that is different from the one in the auction
Some fraudulent sellers will change the payment address or other details after you've won the auction. Always question these changes, and if the sellers won't budge, report them to the auction service.

9. Consider using a third-party payment service
Third-party payment services allow you to transfer money into an online account and make payments from that account without exposing your credit card or bank account information to the seller. For big ticket items, consider using an online escrow service to act as a go-between, holding your money until you receive and approve of the seller's item. The terms of escrow should be agreed upon by both the buyer and the seller.
Hint: Be cautious of sellers who will not be flexible about payment options.

10. Never respond to unsolicited requests to update your account information
These e-mail messages may be scams used to steal your identity. Most legitimate companies will never send you unsolicited e-mail or instant message requests for your passwords or other personal information. If you do receive a request like this that you think may be legitimate, contact the company directly (not through the message you received) and ask for confirmation.

High Paying Per Click

Domains Yahoo - Average price per click : $97.44

This is a keyword that is usually at the top of everyone's high paying list, and I'm not entirely sure why. Yahoo has a domain name registration service for webmasters. That means you can go to them and register the website address you want. This is a very inexpensive service. I do not think Yahoo offers any publicly available affiliate program or referral service for this registration service, so I would think the only entity bidding on this keyword would be Yahoo itself. That doesn't explain why the average cost per click is so high. This one just baffles me. It might be Yahoo trying to protect it's brand, or it might be some weird glitch. It could even be Google doing this on Yahoo's behalf to avoid getting sued by their biggest competitor. I should also note that "domains yahoo" is very weird grammar, perhaps Yahoo offers some service is a different country that is much more profitable, and these keyword bids are just a weird translation. "Domain name yahoo" is often second on some high paying keyword lists.

How Adsense works at Your Blog

Ever the advertising pioneer, Google offers website owners the chance to rent ad space to Google with its simple but sophisticated program called AdSense for content. When someone visiting the site clicks on the ad, Google shares the revenue made from that site click with the website owner. Eric Giguere provides the details here.
Google is viewed as one of the pioneers of text-based advertisements. Through its AdWords program, advertisers can create an entire online advertising campaign in a matter of minutes with nothing more than a bit of creativity and a credit card.
Of course, creating a good advertising campaign is never easy, no matter what form the advertising takes. But Google certainly simplifies the process. Advertisers choose which keywords they're interested in targeting. Whenever someone uses Google to search the Web, Google displays some of those ads unobtrusively on the right side of the results page, clearly labeling them as "Sponsored Links." Google charges an advertiser only when someone clicks on one of the ads, which is why the system is usually referred to as pay-per-click (PPC) advertising.
Google was not the first to offer a PPC advertising service, but it managed to take it a step further than anyone else. Instead of limiting advertisers to bidding for spots on the Google results page—which, in itself, is not an insignificant target because Google is one of the premiere global Web search engines—Google made almost every website on the Internet a potential advertising target. How? Through its AdSense program, which is in some ways the flipside of AdWords.

The AdSense Programs
AdSense actually consists of three separate but related programs:
AdSense for content, for displaying ads on third-party websites
AdSense for search, for providing ad-driven search capabilities to third-party sites
AdSense for feeds, for inserting ads into third-party content feeds
AdSense for content (note that only AdSense is capitalized in all program names) is the original AdSense program; it was simply referred to as "AdSense" until AdSense for search came along and a way was needed to distinguish the two programs. To this day, AdSense is often used as shorthand for AdSense for content. AdSense for feeds is a very recent addition to the AdSense family. This article concerns itself solely with AdSense for content; the other two programs are discussed later in this series.
