A new Elegant Bachelors song has only too recently been made available on both Myspace and Bandcamp. We recommend visiting the Bandcamp site as we are quite sure that The Elegant Bachelors stopped caring whether or not anyone respected them on Myspace right around the same time everyone else did. Also, the song will most certainly sound better on Bandcamp and you won't have any of those obnoxious ringing artifacts that are so common on Myspace. Still, do what you will.

This is what The Elegant Bachelors have got to say:
"We've uploaded a jam called "Glass Houses" from the new split with Eric Radoux. We have but two things to say about this song and the split. The first consists of less than idle musing on why you haven't listened to everything Eric Radoux has ever released yet. You're really doing yourself a disservice if you ignore this tuneful and all around good to know guy. (His music) Second, the Elegant Bachelors would like to make one thing clear. This song is not named after the Billy Joel album. If we were going to name a song after a Billy Joel album it would most certainly be The Stranger since everyone knows it a generally better album compounded by the fact that side B of Glass Houses really drags. Don't entirely discard the possibility of something named after a Billy Joel release as we in the Elegant Bachelors view Mr. Joel as one of the greatest songwriters of all time and his 1977 release of The Stranger as only marginally less important than the ostensible birth of punk in that same year. To call our love for Billy Joel unreserved would be an act of gross understatement."

It's Been Far Too Long...

... and so many things have happened.

Quick updates on everything that matters:

-New Weakness double EP- Weakness are currently in the process of recording a double EP in Cincinnati. As of right now it might end up being called "Cheer" but who knows how long that will stick. Look for updates as we figure out more about a release date.

-Cosmetics Full Length "Edelweiss" - From what I gather the tracking on this record is just about 90% done with only a few vocal tracks remaining to be recorded. As a side note, I heard a few preliminary mixes of this one and it sounds pretty killer. Many thanks to Russian Recording in Bloomington for doing this album a sonic solid.

-Various Elegant Bachelors News- First of all, thanks to any of y'all who came out to the Elegant Bachelors show at the Bishop last night. If you couldn't make it you should be hitting yourself right about now- mostly because one of the bands The Elegant Bachelors played with (
Bad Weather California) was not only awesome but they at one point backed up Daniel Johnston.
What's more, in case you didn't know, The Elegant Bachelors' debut full length "Everything I sFine" is now available for the low low price of five dollars here. You can also grab everything else they have ever released if it strikes your fancy.
Also coming soon from the world of the Elegant Bachelors- two new EPs. Even more exciting, one of those EPs will be a split with Eric Radoux.

WEAKNESS Akron Review!! We're Practically Famous or Something!!

Weakness: Good band, in need of dancing people.

This weekend has seen Akron invaded by alcoholics on motorcycles. They come from all over the world, to celebrate their triumph over alcoholism and their membership in A.A. For those of us who live here and do still drink, it is a neat event, and worthy of respect, but nothing to make you say “Just water for me.” to the bartender.

On Friday Akron was also visited by bands from Columbus and Cincinnati. The group from Columbus was The Phantods, the folks from Cinci, Weakness. I am going to go ahead and disappoint all of you Phantods fans out there now and let you know that, sadly, I had to miss the bands performance. I am intrigued by the Phantods, and was looking forward to being able to write about them, but unfortunately they played later than I had planned and my day job demanded my presence early in the morning. So I had to leave before being able to see them, hopefully they will return sometime and I can make it up to them. I did however get to see Weakness play, and it was a show that was good enough for me to risk writing this only half accurate review.

To say the least, Weakness was a surprise. At my first sight of the tight jeans, black and thick rimmed glasses, and even the in-between beards, I had visions of something screamo, something mellow dramatic and not to fun to see regardless of the music. Even the name “Weakness” was sort of off putting to me, nothing good is normally associated with weakness, and the word conjures up bad thoughts. I am only guessing, but I think the band knew this when they chose the name though, and the irony of their performance and the definition of the word works well for them.

The best way I can think to describe the bands sound, and I have been chewing over it for two days now, would be to take the song “Paperface” by Weezer, clean it up a bit, organize it, make it a little louder, and stretch it over the length of eight or nine songs. That same yelling anger, but in a sometimes lighthearted way, it is powerful while not being overbearing, and when done right it is very enjoyable to hear and witness. Weakness seems to enjoy playing their music as well, and puts on a very good show.

I imagine that if the band had had a more enthusiastic audience in the basement of Annabelle’s that night; the show would have been much more memorable. Normally I would never pin the blame for a somewhat boring show on the audience, but in this case I was really surprised. Aside from two local guys who seemed to enjoy the music and were willing to show this by dancing, and myself after seeing the band play and knowing what it is like to play to an empty (or dead) house, everyone watching remained a good 15 feet from the group. If you looked at the people, they bobbed their heads, and seemed to be having fun, but the interaction just wasn’t there.

From what I heard, and what I confirmed from the bands myspace page (www.myspace.com/weakness) the guys have some pretty clever lyrics up their sleeves to go along with their gritty, chugging music. Like in the song “Foreign Place” where the words “Woke up in a foreign place…Lights explode on a marquee, got lipstick stains like shark teeth.” There is something you have to admire about a group semi-nerdy looking guys that don’t sing trite, depressing love songs and are bold enough to yell through half of their music without reducing it all to garbled growling.

In fact it was only when the band did slow things down that the performance lagged a bit. The song “No Anima” which does seem like it would be a good piece of music when recorded, lacked the same vigor that was present in the rest of the music, and didn’t work well in the middle of the set list, it was almost like being shocked, but in reverse, so that while you are expecting a jolt you end up with nothing out of the ordinary. Also the word anima, when sung live, slightly sounds like the word enema, and there is a huge difference between the two meanings and the similarity can lead to misconceptions among a beer drinking group of listeners.

The band is on tour now, though from what I was led to believe many dates have been cancelled. However it is clear that this group is all about getting out their and playing their songs. This is a new band (very new) but when you see them play they don’t have any hint of green to them. Honestly, any new band that will get up and go on a tour, even a mini-tour of surrounding areas, it shows either a real dedication to the music, or is an indicator of the sort of recklessness that fuels so may great rock shows. Most local bands end up stuck in their given city for years, and while this develops a strong home base, it is nice to see a different approach.

It would be a lie to say that this is a band that is out making completely new noise, and sadly I think this will be their biggest difficulty (everyone I spoke to compared them to Weezer…hell, I did it a few paragraphs up). But it would be an even bigger lie to say that this band isn’t worth going out to see and dance to…be sure and dance folks, this is music after all.

We here at In The Fridge are all kinds of backed up with news at the moment.

Firstly! Today is new digital 7" day, and this month's installment in the In The Fridge Leftovers Club comes courtesy of Cincinnati band The Weakness. Two exclusive songs! For free to take from the internets! HERE! JESUS TELL EVERYONE!

This imaginary 7" marks the beginning of all sorts of Weakness activity. Their full-length self-titled debut album will be available in early April, and three of its tracks will be available to preview in the coming weeks. To make things even more supremely awesome, The Weakness will be embarking on a brief tour of the Midwest in June. Dates will come soon! AH!

Good Christ, there's more. Those great folks from the Indiana Daily Student went and put an article about us in that paper of theirs. Read it here, or something! Unfortunately, the picture of our beautiful faces only appears in the printed version. Special thanks to Josh Kraus for being so patient with us during the interview.

What news we have for you, what news indeed. You may have heard this month's digital seven inch by Eric Radoux by now, if not- download it now, it's great. Well, if you have been enjoying the seven inch as much as we have you will be thoroughly excited about what we have to tell you. Look what we found, buried in the snow...

There is more than a foot of snow on the ground in Bloomington. When there is that much snow afoot and underfoot one must make proverbial lemonade out of lemons (or in this case, suggestive snowmen out of snow). We here at In The Fridge Records are strong believers in both lemonade and suggestive snow men, so you could say that snow days are sort of our finest hour. In the past we have done such amazing things as scale entire mountains and eat eighteen waffles in one sitting.
Today was no different. You see, while traipsing through the frozen tundra that is our neighborhood we discovered this long lost Elegant Bachelors recording of a classic pop song. We were quite delighted, not only because this song has the ability to warm even the most snow embattled heart, but also because finding it was a nice change of pace from what we normally find which tends to be animal feces.
So, from our snow piles to yours, we offer you this musical gift, a snow day surprise if you will- stay warm, stay safe, and most of all stay out of the way of snowplows.

Hot dog, it's almost 2009! We here at In The Fridge are currently busy with all sorts of nonsense during this holiday season, some of which actually involves music. In particular, recording for the full-length debut by The Weakness has been started and completed this week. Thirteen whole songs, bub! A "release" date has yet to be worked out, but the thing is seriously gorgeous. Check out this page or something to hear some older Weakness songs.
