On behalf of the International James Joyce Foundation, we invite you to the XXII International James Joyce Symposium in the "Golden City" of Prague, 13-18 June 2010. Prague is at the centre of Europe as Joyce is at the centre of the tradition of European modernism, and it is fitting that the major European author of the twentieth century be honoured in the city that is the very heart of modern Europe. Historically, some of the earliest translations of Joyce's work appeared in Prague, and the first President of the Czechoslovak Republic - T.G. Masaryk - was even believed to have annotated a first edition of Ulysses, although only the first French edition survives in the Masaryk archive today.

It's Cool to Stay in School: St. Mike's Program Reaches Out to Teens

"Most days on campus I have to pinch myself so that I know Im not dreaming." Thats how Susan Martin feels about her job with high school students in the Transitions program at St. Michaels College, a college whose history of social and intellectual outreach dates back to the 1930s. The U of T alumna, a teacher from J. Clark Richardson Collegiate, a public school in Ajax, spearheaded the schools Transitions program, which helped students at risk of dropping out of high school to complete their credits on a post-secondary campus. She was the first member of her family to go to university and is thrilled about U of T opening its doors to others like her.

With their 4-2 victory over UTM (Mississauga) on December 3, SMCs Div. 1 Ice Hockey team has won their fifth consecutive intramural championship! The victory avenges a heartbreaking loss to UTM earlier in the season in which our team allowed two goals in the last minute of play to tarnish an otherwise undefeated season. This time SMC came to ready to play and spent most of the game relentlessly pressuring UTM in their own end. Honourable mention goes to Ryan Hamilton, Tim Corcoran and Rob Wighton who all scored goals in the contest and hearty congratulations to the rest of the players for bringing home yet another championship to SMC!

The office of Dave Hagelaar, Interim Chief Librarian of the John M. Kelly Library is decorated with the orange banners of the Netherlands soccer team. Dave has competition from other St. Mike's staff. Manuel Filipe, Senior Supervisor in the Facilities and Services Department is convinced that the Portuguese team will win. The Italian, French, Polish, and German teams also have their supporters. This good natured rivalry contributes to the spirit which makes St. Mike's a place where people of many nationalities and interests are welcome.
