Santa Cruz is a great place to live. A small central coast town, far enough away from the big cities to enjoy scenes like this. It resides at the top of Monterey Bay about 40 minutes from Carmel by the Sea and about 1 1/2 hours from San Francisco, a natural abundance of sea life and an idyllic Mediterranean climate make it a nature lovers paradise, giant schools of anchovy and huge flocks of Shearwater, arrive every year along with migrating whale and local super pods of dolphin up to 3000 strong.

Mother nature puts on a show at Carrizo Plain National Monument in Central California. I have never seen this kind of display of flowers in all my years of photography and seeking out this kind of spectacle. Lots of rain last year germinated a lot of seeds and sunshine at the right time made them explode. Entire hillsides completely covered in flowers.

The system quickly grows, Canon is making sure the Pro lenses are there for users that require the Pro level lenses. This is going to be very interesting. The RF 70-200 f/2.8 shows what the advantage of this system will be like. Having a 70-200 f/2.8 at that size is a great advantage in size and weight over their legacy system.

Featuring the latest, fourth generation 26.1MP X-Trans CMOS 4 APS-C sensor with no optical low-pass filter, the FUJIFILM X-T3 boasts the highest performance in the history of X Series. Utilizing the unique color filter array of X-Trans CMOS sensors to control moiré and false colors, it is the first APS-C back-illuminated structure sensor with phase detection pixels distributed across the surface to improve image resolution without compromising signal to noise ratio. With the X-T3, ISO160 is now part of the standard ISO range, previously this was only available as extended ISO, perfect for use in bright scenes or when trying to shoot wide open with a fast, large-aperture lens.
The new X-T3 debuts the X-Processor 4 processor which features a Quad Core CPU to achieve a processing speed 3 times faster than current X Series models. Providing incredible AF accuracy and speed, the processor is also the first to deliver 4K/60P 10bit output, fulfilling the performance needs of professional videographers. It is also capable of implementing complex image processing tasks in an instant, such as the unique FUJIFILM Color Chrome Effect or Monochrome Adjustment function.
The new FUJIFILM X-T3 features the Color Chrome Effect, previously limited to the FUJIFILM GFX 50S medium format mirrorless digital camera, which produces enhanced color gradation in highly saturated colors such as vivid-colored flowers with shadows, a notoriously difficult subject to reproduce. With the high-speed processing power of the X-Processor 4, this effect can be applied not only to a single shot but also during continuous shooting.
Exceptional Autofocus and Viewfinder Performance
With the X-T3, AF performance receives a dramatic improvement from previous X Series products, increasing the phase detection AF area to the entire frame with 2.16M phase detection pixels providing fast and accurate phase detection AF. The low-light phase detection AF limit has been increased over the X-T2 by 2 stops, from -1EV to -3EV, making it possible for photographers to accurately focus in low light conditions, perfect for night photography.
Furthermore, the X-Processor 4’s high processing speed and excellent phase detection algorithm means the camera refocuses (AF) and meters (AE) 1.5 times more frequently than the X-T2, enabling accurate autofocus even when photographing subjects that change speed and move erratically across the frame, such as sports photography. The performance of Face Detection AF has also been improved. Eye Detection AF now supports the AF-C mode to maintain accurate focus tracking. Face and Eye Detection AF is also available during video recording to achieve smooth filming of subjects.
The X-T3 offers photographers incredible viewfinder performance, with the ability to now track a moving subject in the 3.69-million-dot high resolution EVF with a magnification ratio of 0.75x. Further the X-T3, allows continuous shooting of 11fps with the mechanical shutter without the optional vertical battery grip, enabling fast continuous shooting while maintaining a low weight.
Additional enhancements to the X-T3 include a display time lag of just 0.005 seconds and a EVF refresh rate of 100fps for smooth display of moving subject or when panning the camera. A new sports finder mode for enhanced capture of moving subjects is especially useful for sports and wildlife photography, and a new pre-shoot function, which allows photographers to start shooting as soon as the shutter button is half-pressed to ensure the moment is never missed.
Enhanced Video Performance to Meet the Needs of Professionals
The X-T3 is the first mirrorless digital camera capable of internal SD card 4K/60P 4:2:0 10bit recording and the first mirrorless digital camera with APS-C or larger sensor that is capable of 4K/60P 4:2:2 10bit HDMI output. Supported video formats include the widely-used H.264/MPEG-4 AVC as well as H.265/HEVC for greater data compression, which enables internal recording of 4K/60P 4:2:0 10bit at200Mbps bitrate as well as simultaneous HDMI output. The X-T3 sensor’s read speed has been increased from that of the X-T2, enabling17msec reading in 4K/60P video, reducing rolling shutter distortion for smooth recording of fast-moving subjects. 10bit color depth for video boosts the amount of color information 64 times compared to 8bit, and is combined with approximately. 12 stops dynamic range to enable capture of subjects with rich gradation of color.
Also introduced in the X-T3 is a new noise reduction algorithm and 4K inter-frame noise reduction, the minimum sensitivity for shooting F-Log footage has been lowered from ISO800 to ISO640, further enhancing the camera’s performance to meet the needs of videographers.
Designed for Ultimate Operability
Inheriting the popular design of the X-T2, dials are positioned on the top panel, and the camera features a central viewfinder and excellent grip design for stability and comfort. The X-T3 also incorporates enhancements to its design, including a lockable EVF diopter adjustment to prevent unintended adjustments while carrying the camera, and a touchscreen panel with higher contrast, wider viewing angles and better functionality for more intuitive operation. In addition, the X-T3 offers larger top-panel dials than the X-T2, and larger rear-panel buttons and a more pronounced press function of the front and rear command dials, as found on the X-H1.
X-T3 Vertical Battery Grip
The Vertical Battery Grip VG-XT3 is designed to be dust-resistant, weather-resistant and capable of operating at temperatures as low as -10°C/14° F, and holds two additional batteries to increase the maximum number of shots to 1,100 (in normal mode). The grip features a shutter release button, focus lever, AE-L button, AF-L button, front and rear command dials, Q button and Fn button to provide the same level of excellent operability with vertical shooting as with horizontal.
X-T3 Metal Hand Grip
The MHG-XT3 Metal Hand Grip makes it substantially more comfortable to hold the camera when it is mounted with a large-aperture lens, in order to reduce camera shake. The battery or SD cards can be replaced without having to remove the hand grip, and the base can be used as a quick release shoe when using a dovetail mount on a tripod.

Interesting entry level full frame mirror-less, pro version coming soon. I think we can assume the pro version will have the the missing elements that we don't see here. AF point toggle for starters, rear control dial, dual card slots...... The control ring added to the lenses looks very interesting. Canon looks to be on the right track. Optical Innovation Inspires the Next Leap Forward in Imaging

MELVILLE, N.Y., September 5, 2018 – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the next revolution in the company’s long history of innovative and award-winning camera systems, the EOS R system featuring the newly designed RF mount. Recognizing the need to advance optical design, the Company sought to create a versatile and powerful new system that supports all current EF, EF-S, TS-E and MP-E lenses[i], and also provides the optical advancements and engineering flexibility to build upon for years to come.
When Canon set forth to develop a new interchangeable lens camera system, they focused on three core optical principles: high-image quality, high-specification performance, and compact design. Recognizing that optics is the foundation for any camera system, the RF mount was conceived to open new doors in optical design. Canon’s new RF mount features the same size diameter as the EF mount (54mm) and shorter back focus distance. This allows for lenses to sit closer to the sensor (the focal plane) and allowed Canon optical engineers to reimagine lens design utilizing larger rear lens elements to produce an image on the full-frame sensor. This new optical formula has paved the way for higher performing lenses. In addition, the Canon RF mount features a high-speed 12-pin communication system that provides faster and more in-depth communication between the camera and lens over existing Canon mount systems.
The EOS R system is designed for full, uninhibited compatibility with all existing EF, EF-S, TS-E and MP-E lenses through the use of mount adapters[ii]. In addition, through the use of the optional Drop-In Filter Mount Adapter or Control Ring Mount Adapter these lenses, in fact, gain functionality.
“There has never been a time in history in which visual expression has been so prolific. Imaging, both still and video, are the communication mediums of today’s society. Much in the same way we learned to type in the past, today’s youth are skilled in shooting, editing, and visual storytelling in ways that only the masters of each craft were decades ago,” said Kazuto Ogawa, president and chief operating officer, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “Knowing this, we needed to step back and design a system that delivers all the creative expression and functionality today’s youth crave, now and in the years to come.”
The First in a New System: The EOS R
The new Canon EOS R full-frame mirrorless camera features a 30.3 megapixel CMOS sensor that is powered by the Company’s latest image processor, DIGIC 8, enabling shooting at up to 8.0 frames per second[iii]. The new camera inherits a lot from Canon’s legacy in both EOS and Cinema EOS. Video storytellers can capture stunning 4K UHD video up to 30fps and record in 10-bit 4:2:2 (with an external recorder). The EOS R also comes with the ability to shoot Canon Log, providing 12 stops of dynamic range, minimal loss of detail in shadows and highlighted areas and an increased range of choices when color grading. Users with an existing collection of Canon lenses will be excited to know that all EF and EF-S lens are compatible with the camera. In order to do so, photographers and videographers can choose between using one of three new mount adapters, each uniquely designed to meet the individual needs of the user.
The new Canon EOS R camera features Dual Pixel CMOS Auto Focus with 5,655 manually selectable AF points[iv], supporting AF at up to f/11 with a 384 zone (24x16) real-time metering system. With f/1.2 lenses, the camera astonishingly boasts AF sensitivity in low light in as little as EV-6. When using the RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM lens with the EOS R, the camera can focus in as little as 0.05 seconds with Dual Pixel CMOS AF[v], making it the fastest autofocus speed in the world[vi]. These features provide photographers and videographers with Canon’s most advanced AF system to date. The EOS R also features a silent shutter setting when shooting in single-shot mode; an important feature for those who need to capture imagery without disrupting the scene. An upcoming free firmware update will enable silent shutter in continuous shooting mode as well.

Thoughts From the First Users

Conveniently placed just to the right of the EVF, Canon has introduced a new Multi-Function Bar that will allows users to more easily access their customizable settings, such as AF, ISO and White Balance. Users will have the option to either slide or tap the bar to gain access to the settings and adjust on-the-go as they deem necessary depending on each particular shooting situation.
Answering the demand for enhanced mobile editing of RAW image files, Canon is also announcing a new application, Digital Photo Professional Express (DPP Express). In combination with an updated Canon Camera Connect App, DPP Express enables users to send, view, edit and process CR3 RAW files on their iPad[vii]. A free download of the app will be available October 2018.

Availability and Pricing

At long last, Nikon has launched the Z7 and the Z6, the most interesting mirrorless cameras to date and perhaps, with it, the new age of mirrorless cameras.

The new Z mount is the cornerstone of this system, with an eye towards fast prime lenses in the near future. Canon will follow shortly, however this looks like an amazing camera that I look forward to using. Is this the end of the DSLR? not yet, but its demise may be around the corner.

Z 7 and Z 6 product overview

The Z 7 and Z 6 are equipped with a new backside illumination, Nikon FX-format CMOS sensor with focal-plane phase-detection AF pixels, and the latest image-processing engine, EXPEED 6.

The Z 7 has 45.7 effective megapixels, and supports a standard sensitivity range of ISO 64-25600. In combination with NIKKOR Z lenses, the camera achieves an outstanding level of sharpness and detail, all the way to the edges of the image.

The Z 6 is an all-purpose FX-format camera with 24.5 effective megapixels, and supports the wide range of ISO 100-51200 standard sensitivities. With superior performance at high sensitivities and full-frame 4K UHD movie recording with full pixel readout, the Z 6 responds to a variety of needs, such as shooting in dimly lit environments, and movie recording.

Primary features of the Z 7 and Z 6

1.Equipped with a new backside illumination Nikon FX-format CMOS sensor with focal-plane phase-detection AF pixels
A backside illumination CMOS sensor, with focal-plane phase-detection AF pixels, has been adopted for both the Z 7 and the Z 6. The Z 7 has 45.7 effective megapixels, and supports the ISO 64-25600 range of standard sensitivities (reduction to the equivalent of ISO 32 and expansion to the equivalent of ISO 102400 is also possible). The Z 6 has a 24.5 effective megapixels, and supports a broad range of standard sensitivities, from ISO 100-51200 (additional reduction to the equivalent of ISO 50 and expansion to the equivalent of ISO 204800).
2.A hybrid AF system with focus points covering approximately 90% of the imaging area
The Z 7 has 493 focus points* and the Z 6 has 273 focus points*, enabling broad coverage of approximately 90% of the imaging area both horizontally and vertically. This hybrid AF system uses an algorithm optimized for the FX-format sensor, and automatically switches between focal-plane phase-detection AF and contrast-detect AF to achieve focus. The use of NIKKOR Z lenses further increases AF accuracy with both still images and movies.

3.The new EXPEED 6 image-processing engine for sharp and clear imaging, and new functions that support creative imaging expression
The Z 7 and Z 6 are equipped with the new EXPEED 6 image-processing engine. Employing the superior resolving power of NIKKOR Z and NIKKOR F lenses, subjects are rendered more sharply than ever before. Noise is also effectively reduced.
Additionally, a mid-range sharpening option has been added to Picture Control sharpness parameters. This option, along with existing sharpening and clarity parameters, allows users to make various textures within the screen sharper or softer, for both still images and movies*. The cameras also offer 20 options of Creative Picture Control, supporting creative imaging expression. The effect level is adjustable from 0 to 100.

4.An electronic viewfinder that utilizes Nikon's superior optical and image-processing technologies to offer a clear and natural view
The electronic viewfinder adopted for the Z 7 and Z 6 is comfortable and easy to use, comparable to optical viewfinders. Both cameras are equipped with an electronic viewfinder for which an approximately 3690k-dot OLED panel has been adopted. The electronic viewfinder has, respectively, frame coverage and magnification of approximately 100% and 0.8x, as well as an approximately 37.0° diagonal viewing angle. It draws on Nikon's superior optical and image-processing technologies, ensuring a clear and comfortable view comparable to that of optical viewfinders, with reduced aberration and minimum eyestrain, even during extended shoots. Furthermore, a fluorine coat that effectively repels dirt has been applied to the eyepiece protection window. In addition, the menu can be displayed in the electronic viewfinder, allowing users to quickly view and adjust a variety of shooting settings, including ISO sensitivity, AF-area mode, and Picture Control, all while looking through the viewfinder.
5.An ergonomic design unique to Nikon that enables intuitive operation
The Z 7 and Z 6 have inherited the superior operability that Nikon has cultivated over the years through its development of cameras. The bodies are compact, while boasting a firm grip that is easy to hold, and buttons such as that for the sub-selector, AF-ON, ISO, and exposure compensation are all placed so that they can be operated swiftly and easily. Additionally, a display panel has been positioned on the top part of the camera, where information about settings can be displayed, the same as with high-end digital SLR camera models.
6.Movie functions such as 10-bit N-Log that captures a wide dynamic range, and timecoding, responding to professional needs
The Z 7 and Z 6 support recording of not only full-frame 4K UHD (3840 x 2160)/30p movies using the FX-based movie format, but also Full-HD/120p movies. Sharper 4K UHD movies are made possible, using the full-pixel readout.*¹ Additionally, Active D-Lighting, electronic vibration reduction, and focus peaking can be used with 4K UHD and Full-HD movie recording. Nikon's original N-Log can also be used with 10-bit*² HDMI output. The cameras utilize extensive color depth and twelve-stop, 1300% dynamic range to record a wealth of tone information from highlights and shadows for more effective color grading. Timecode support*³ makes synchronizing video and sound from multiple devices easier. Additionally, the control ring built into NIKKOR Z lenses can be used to quietly and smoothly adjust settings such as aperture and exposure compensation.

This function can also be used effectively with NIKKOR F lenses, including those not equipped with a VR function, with the Mount Adapter FTZ (sold separately)*³.

Perspective correction

Shooting from a boat is never easy, tripods are ruled out pretty much and faster shutter speeds are needed to prevent blurred images. Inevitably you end up with tilted horizons, add that to perspective issues and you have a recipe for bad images.

When shooting tall vertical objects, converging vertical lines can be a problem, as you can see in the top image, the vertical lines converge towards the upper center of the image. I used Lightroom's Transform module to correct this image. When using the Transform module you have to be careful not to over correct, if you do a lot of correction, resolution will be lost. I tend to not use auto correct. For this I used vertical and a small amount of horizontal. I lost some resolution and sharpness, however, the sharpness was brought back with Photo shop, using a mask on just the man made objects and applying a smart sharpen filter.

Its a pretty amazing tool and I will use it for all converging vertical and horizontal lines. This is also an argument for higher resolution sensors, with more resolution, you are able to do more correction, assuming you left enough space around the image that may be removed by correction.

Canon releases two new lenses that are sure to delight anyone in the system. I will be getting the f/4 version myself, I use it a lot for landscape and event work. The f/2.8 will be a super nice lens, but weight is a factor for me, if you are doing studio and or portrait work though, the f/2.8 will be a killer solution.

Fuji's newest flagship camera the X-H1, IBIS, a better build and what appears to be better ergonomics makes for a nice addition to the lineup. More video-centric than any other Fuji camera before it, it is targeted at the videographer, but will make an excellent stills camera. The top LCD is welcomed, trickle down from the GFX.

Not a new battery is very disappointing!

Larger improved grip, with larger and hopefully stiffer buttons and dials along with the top LCD, should make for more intuitive use.

Not much of an upgrade from the X-T2, but the Flagship going forward, I am quite surprised the sensor is not new. I guess we will see that in the X-T3.

My monochrome interpretation of Valencia's, City of Arts and Sciences. First off I have to say this is one of the funnest places I've had the privilege of photographing. So many images could be made here, one could spend years returning here and see something new every time.

My first instinct was to shoot it in black and white, I love how these images turned out and the Fuji XT-2, did a superb job of rendering my vision. I used both the XF 10-24mm f/4 R OIS and XF 16-55 f/2.8 R LM WR, lenses.

The City of Arts and Sciences is an amazing architectural feet designed by Santiago Calatrava.

Vivid blue sky and bright white buildings create a perfect setting for black and white images. Processed in lightroom from RAW, I love the simplicity of images like this, Fuji files allow for pushing the blue almost to black in Post, giving me a super high contrast.

I tried Acros presets but my standard process in Lightroom worked better here, very little ghosting at edges and deep contrast helped keep a nice clean image.

Córdoba, located in south central Spain, about 3 hours south of Madrid, once a Roman city, then a Moorish ruled caliphate and now a beautiful Spanish city. Full of surprises, wonderful architecture, delightful people and with today's ability to use Airbnb, an affordable destination spot on your way to Andalusia. We stayed in a penthouse suite in the old town not far from The Mezquita for $66 per night.

the Historic Center of Córdoba that was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1994.

The structure is regarded as one of the most accomplished monuments of Moorish architecture."

In 784 Abd al-Rahman I ordered construction of the Great Mosque, which was considerably expanded by later Muslim rulers. Córdoba returned to Christian rule in 1236 during the Reconquista, and the building was converted to a Roman Catholic church, culminating in the insertion of a Renaissance cathedral nave in the 16th century.

Cordoba was a wonderful city to walk around for a couple days, enjoying the beautiful off season weather and the lower tourist count the shoulder season brings. I highly recommend visiting in October. We where lucky, I'm sure, from the weather standpoint, low eighty's and partly cloudy sky's.

I have been considering medium format of late, especially the Fuji GFX, but I think this is now a better option, I am looking forward to getting my hands on this and trying it out.

The addition of a focus toggle is especially nice, I don't understand why it took Nikon so long to implement this, my Canon cameras have had it for years. I am also hoping for a better live view implementation.

This kind of sounds like the ultimate camera, lets see how it performs in the real world.

High Key Landscape, Mono Lake

Its not often I come across a landscape scene that works as a high key shot, this one seemed to fit the bill for me. Mono lake Tufa, shortly after sunrise.

The Views from an airplane can be quite spectacular, if you have a fairly clear window, photography from 30,000 ft can be a lot of fun and good images can be acquired, if the right technique is used.

Use fast shutter speeds and get your lens right up against the glass. Think about that composition and horizon before pulling the trigger.

Finding an old image in the archives that was overlooked is always nice, I frequently review my archive to see whats available and I often find an image I like. This is a good reason to not delete every image you don't like when you download to your external drive.

I often read of people saying to delete images you don't like. Disk space is cheap, you can get 3 or 4 terabytes of disk space for $100 these days, so better to just hang on to those images and review them later.

The above image I took in Nov of 2015, but I somehow missed this image in black and white, today I really like it. So hang on to those old images, you never know what gems you might have hidden in the archive.

The long awaited 6D replacement arrives with many improvements, including the vari-angle touch screen display and all new 26mp sensor. Sony launches two new lenses, missing from their line up of pro level lenses. Giving Sony users parity with Nikon and Canon at the wide end of the spectrum.

This is a huge boost to the E-mount line up, Sony looks to be pushing hard to round out their lens line up and show they are for real and around to stay, the cost of developing this type of lens is not cheap.

Next up? Super Tele, 400 f2.8. This seems logical given it is a huge hole for pro level sports photographers. They also need a 200mm f/2 a 300mm f2.8 and a 500mm f4. Sony has become a major player now and I can't help but wonder what Nikon and Canon are up to.

Can Canon hold their lead? can Nikon catch up? It will be interesting to watch this play out.

Wow, is all I can say to those specs and the first look at this amazing piece of camera tech. This will hurt Nikon even more, now that Sony has already overtaken them in sales. Look for the Canikon to play catch up to Sony.

It looks like Sony has got a real winner here, this is a dream spec of a camera, The lenses are coming, they still have a ways to go in the Pro telephoto end, but they are gaining ground quick. This is meant for pro's that shoot sporting events. Birders will probably drool, but its not for my type of shooting.

Fuji X-T2 as a Travel Camera

Using the Fuji X-T2 as a travel camera has been a great choice for me, I usually pack it along with three lenses in to my small Granite Gear, Taku 24 pack, two lenses in Lowepro soft lens cases and one mounted on the X-T2. It is a nice light weight kit, that I can take to the beach with extra gear or hiking and it will not overwhelm me with gear, I also pack a light weight tripod and a few Lee filters.

My 5D Mk IV is still my main camera for professional style shooting, but I am done packing it around on vacation, just to much weight. The Fuji does not supply the full frame image quality of my 5D, but it sure gets close. At the end of the day, like my recent Maui trip, I sure do appreciate the light kit and the XF 23mm f1.4 lens pretty much stays mounted for most of the time.

The other part of the equation in travel photography is packing your gear in to places to eat or drink. Having a small pack like this allows me to not leave any gear in the car and not look like a Sherpa when walking in to a place to eat after a day at the beach or on the trail. I can comfortably keep an eye on a small pack and people are less likely to trip over my bag.
