IMAGE UNITED'S SECOND COMING RESULTS IN A PRE-RELEASE SELL OUT!

The Image Comics founder crossover completely sells out at a distribution-level two days prior to release!

IMAGE UNITED, the six-part crossover written by Robert Kirkman and featuring Image Founders Erik Larsen, Rob Liefeld, Todd McFarlane, Whilce Portacio, Marc Silvestri and Jim Valentino, makes its second coming to comic stands this Wednesday with a pre-release, distribution-level sell out!

"Considering the substantial overprint, we're quite pleased by how quickly IMAGE UNITED has sold out," Kirkman said. "The reception to the first issue was immense with its own sell out the day of release, but to hear it's happening a second time, two days before, makes everyone involved very happy. This crossover is a major labor of love, so we're very thankful for the support by both our fans and retail partners."

IMAGE UNITED is a six-part crossover encompassing the entire Image superhero universe and features each Image founder illustrating their own characters. Since its announcement, the crossover has garnered headlines from the New York Times, USAToday and other massive media outlets with its once-in-a-lifetime approach to the superhero crossover. Despite a significant overprint, the second issue completely sold out at a distribution-level two days before release. A new printing will be released in January with a new cover by Rob Liefeld.

IMAGE UNITED #2 2nd Printing, a 32-page full color comic book for $3.99, will be in stores January 20th, 2010.

Q. What's been the most rewarding part of this experience for you?

A. Getting back together with the guys again has been the best part for me. It's all about realizing that we're like a family with all of our ups and downs. Once words are spoken and everything's passed, it's group hug time. We still love each other, outside of all the hype. We'll be the first to admit each other's faults but we'll also always have each other's backs.

Rob Liefeld and Robert Kirkman sit down with CBR and talk about the behind the scenes interaction of taking the script to layouts for the first issue of the Crossover of the Century.

CBR News: The first page of "Image United" kicks off with this massive group shot, showcasing many of the characters, as well as every artist involved in the project.

Robert Kirkman: When the initial idea for the book came through, it was that everybody is going to be drawing their own characters. When it came down to plotting the book, I wanted to make sure that we opened with a bang. For one, it's a big event and you want to open big and get everybody ramped up right at the outset. But because of the artistic way that this book was being done, I wanted to open on this page with a group shot of everybody so we could see that everybody was involved, everybody was drawing their own characters and this is how it was going to work. I just wanted to have everybody there from the outset, not some long, boring build-up to get everybody together. I wanted to jump in feet first and hit the ground running. And Rob did a fantastic job — although he did make some changes... [Laughs]

IMAGE UNITED, the six-part crossover featuring Image Founders Erik Larsen, Rob Liefeld, Todd McFarlane, Whilce Portacio, Marc Silvestri and Jim Valentino, made its debut today with a near-immediate sellout at the distribution-level.

"As soon as I held IMAGE UNITED in my hand, I just knew these would go," said Marc Nathan, owner of Reisterstown, MD's Cards Comics & Collectibles and Promoter of the Baltimore Comic Con. "You just knew the covers were going to go. It was perfectly smart on Image's part to put them out this weekend - the best shopping week of the year. Everyone is coming to this weekend to shop, so you know people will be coming back for #2."

Q. Can you share a little bit about how theYoungbloodteam will affect or be affected within the story?

A. We're going to use United to really shake things up. With something at this level, it really gives you the courage to do crazy new things that you wouldn't necessarily have actually considered going through with in the past. We're definitely going to lose some key characters. There'll be a directional change for the team, for sure. A HUGE Youngblood character is going to bite the dust!

Nrama: We know that Al Simmons is the Spawn villain. Whose idea was it to have him be the bad guy? Was that something Robert came up with?

McFarlane: Robert. We were looking for something big, and he approached me on it. Ultimately, if there's one thing we could have done better at Image over the years, it would have been to establish more "A" heroes and villains and sub-characters. So when he was looking for somebody to put into the book as a villain that would have at least some meaning to the readers, he thought Spawn was the one that would work.

Nrama: Have you guys hit any snafus? We already heard a story about how you didn't draw a Cyberforce ship in there and the page required a patch. Does the process inevitably lead to stuff like that?

Silvestri: [laughs] Well the layout was so loose that I didn't realize there was a plane in the background! So I had to send a little patch, but it's a small thing. Erik noticed it and probably could have done it himself, but in the spirit of us all doing our own characters and their stuff, I sent a little patch.
