Intimate Weddings shows candies wrapped in old comics but really anything can be wrapped in these. I like that they jazzed them up with buttons and bows.

I also really like this album cover Gift Box idea from Craft Knife.

Martha suggests using extra ribbon and shredded gift wrap pieces as padding when shipping the items just to jazz it up that much more. Man, she thinks of everything.

I think these "tiny treasure cards out of all your leftover and cherished bits" are a great idea.

Green X-mas Ornaments, Wrap and Decor Ideas

I love these shadow box ornaments made from old ornament boxes via Recycled crafts. It makes me think I could do this with old X-mas cards.

Recycled Crafts also have these bows made from old VHS tape, but it seems to me these could be ornaments too. If you did colored vellum behind them and made sure they were well lit, it could neat...something like that anyway.

I found these Soda pop can Star Ornaments on This Next. I thought they might inspire some different designs.

I also liked this StarBurst Ornament from Thrifty Fun, which can be made from the remnants of gift wrapping paper.

Shopping at Thrift Stores is Eco-Friendly

In my quest to reuse items that would otherwise go to waste, I did a quick run to the thrift store for some craft supplies. Well, I got some of those, but I also lucked out and found some really cool toys for my son.

Green Gifts For the Skilled and the Not So Skilled

Obviously, everyone can't make these, unless you have a kiln that is. However, maybe you know someone who does or can be inspired by this wine bottle cheese tray that I found on Craftster.

If you're lucky enough to have someone who's good with tools, this side table revamp may be a possibility. I think kids would love it and it seems like everyone has one of these old tables they don't use. Out of the Crayon Box talks alot about how she did it on her site.

Energy Saving Products Fall Short With Packaging

Can Someone explain to me why energy saving products such as GE's CFL light bulbs is packaged in #3 plastics? While some of their products are packaged in cardboard, not all are and I don't understand why. Most curbside recycling programs do not include #3 plastics. If we're honest, most don't search outside their curbside recycling to find areas to recycle other plastics. Some areas don't have it even if you did seek it out.

The Economy Has Boaters Up A Creek

I had watched some newscast about abandoned boats "littering" the seas and our coastlines awhile back and thought I should share the gist of the story. Being that I don't have a boat, it's not something I think about. Apparently though, boat owners who have found that they can no longer afford to take care of their boats, paying dock fees and such, and unable to sell, simply let their boats adrift at sea. I'm not just talking small fishing boats, but some are huge yachts, just rotting at sea.

The owners are actually sanding away the registry numbers in hopes of not being connected to their discards, but more and more laws are being brought forth to try and deter people from doing this.

There are many reasons why these laws are so important. For one thing, these boats carry toxins like lead, chromium, copper, mercury and zinc that are seeping into our waterways. This, of course, affects the wildlife. Secondly, the boats are causing problems with other vessels trying to navigate the seas. Once a vessel becomes a hazard, it has to be removed, which is expensive and guess who has to pay for that...us! We're paying for it in more ways than one.

We need a stronger chemical law to keep our families safe and healthy.

Movember: Mustaches Fundraiser For Cancer

This isn't really about going green, but it has everything to do with humanity and so I'm posting it on all my blogs.

My husband is taking part of Movember, where men grow their mustaches for the month of November in order to raise money for the Prostate Cancer Foundation and the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LIVESTRONG). My husband is part of Team Mo Bicless.

If you can't afford to give yourself, you can join the team to help support and to help raise money for the cause. You do not have to grow a mustache to be part of the team, so ladies you can join too as a MO Sista "A woman who loves a mustache".

After losing my father to cancer, I've heard so many people's stories that I don't believe there's anyone who hasn't been affected by cancer.

I am selling sets of mustache magnets and stickers here. A portion will go towards the charity.

Elephant Purses made from old sweaters. There are actually quite a few examples of these floating around. I think they're awesome. I love bags and my son is really into elephants so he'd probably love if I made myself one of these.

WILD9

I was recently contacted by a reader, Alex, who turned me on to the WILD Foundation's World Wilderness Congress, aka "WILD9". According to Alex, Wild9 is

the longest running environmental forum and occurs once every four years. This year's conference will be held the week of November 6th in Merida, Mexico, and will feature speakers Jane Goodall, Stephan Harding, and Pav Sukhdev.

Registration is open to the public and will be available until Tuesday, October 27th.

I don't know that I can do Wild9 justice, as I am just learning about it myself. However, you can go here for more information.

Is Gordon Ramsay Killing The Planet?

Okay, here's the deal, I love Gordon Ramsay. I watch all his shows, Hell's Kitchen, Kitchen Nightmares, The F Word, but there is something about all these shows that kills me. The amount of food wasted on these shows is crazy.

I mean I get that there's a certain level of quality expected from his kitchens. Still, I can't help, but hope that there's some poor families in the back digging into these 3 inch think cuts of prime beef that they throw out consistently because it has been waiting more than a few seconds.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a vegetarian, but animals have died here. What a shame it is that they should be discarded like that, especially when there are so many starving people out there.

Of course, it's not just Gordon Ramsay but I don't see behind the scenes at a lot of restaurants so I have to point out what I see, but it is a general message for all wasteful chefs.

Back Thru The Future: FREE CD & DVD Recycling

I was going through some of my magazines to get ready to donate and I found this article about this site, CD Recycling For Free in an old Woman's Day. Anyway, you can send in old CDs and DVDs to be recycled.

They have to be removed from cases and packed without any packing materials. Otherwise, it's stated that the packages will be turned away.

The site isn't as informative as I would like but if you have some old CD/Dvds you're wanting to get rid of, then this seems easy enough.

Kids + Recycled + Halloween + Crafts

I am doing a dinosaur theme for my son's b-day and came across instructions on how to make a Milk Jug Pteranodon along with a Milk Jug Tyrannosaurus Rex Skull, among other things. I thought they were pretty good and so I thought I'd share.

I had just mentioned a bunny costume on my blog RnR Reviews, but this one is done from an old shirt and it is super easy- gotta love that! Lucky Beans has a complete tutorial.

Egg Shell Sidewalk Chalk-Yes, chalk made with eggshells. I know it sounds weird but definitely worth trying all the same.

Eco-Artware has a ton of cool eco crafts for kids. They led me to a site Free Kids Crafts, where I found this cute pumpkin jar & the mummy jar as well.

Green Halloween

Remember this Halloween to light with Solar lighting, LED lights, or candles. I say that but I have to mention this:

I didn't know if I should put this in Halloween or X-Mas. It is for a Dexter/slasher party but the chandelier is so beautiful it feels weird putting it here. To make it, they used "Repurposed wine glasses dipped in white latex". If you go to the link, they talk more about how it was done. I just love it!

Now, if you're throwing a party, think digital invites.

Of course there's all kinds of great advise about organic candy apples and pumpkins, non toxic face paints, fabric choices and all that. Honestly, I'm not an expert on that type of stuff so I don't like to speak on it. The goal is to get there, but as it is, I'm far from it. So, if you know better than I, please feel free to add tips. I did find this website, Green Halloween. It has some good tips.

One thing that I think I am knowledgeable about is crafts and I have to say I have always preferred homemade costumes. Even if it's a hand me down, most things can easily be altered and jazzed up enough that they become like new.

While on the subject, I did do a post on my other blog, RnR Reviews about fairy wings I saw done on HGTV years ago. I thought these were awesome then and still do. Halloween, Renaissance Festival, school plays or just because, these are easy and use things you probably have already. While she uses store bought wire, I made some with wire hangers and white hose. I can't stand wire hangers for clothes so I had to come up with something for them. They worked great!

For Your Kitchen, From Your Kitchen Crafts

Gift Tin via Pop Can from Crafts On A Whim. I tend to shy away from working with tin because I don't like the idea of sharp edges and gifts. Something about that just seems like a bad idea, but this looks pretty fool proof. You actually go in through the bottom of the can so that the recipient can still pop the top and voila... gift!

Oilcloth lunch bag-I've seen a few of these, but I thought this tutorial from Tumbling Blocks was a good one.

Dabbled has an interesting alternative (left) that I also liked for a Reusable Sandwich Bag.

PIZZA BOX IDEA FILES from Giver's Log. I thought these would be good for scrapbooking being that they are large. I often start several projects at once, then set them aside for when I have time to finish. This could be a good way to keep them in one place. Of course, the boxes would have to be clean to do so.

Some people bring their own produce bags instead of using the plastic ones provided for you. I don't know the best place to buy them, but if you google it, they're easy to find. I did, however, find a post on how to make one of your own.

Kelly Georgette gives a great tutorial on how to make a soap dispenser from a mason jar--very cool!

Cardboard Drink HotPad/ Coasters from EvaForeva. I have seen coasters made from magazines but this is a different spin.

Coffee filter garland- I'm not sure what I could use this for, but I'm feeling like I want to make this in the future, for a party or something.

Dad Can Do: Green Crafts

I recently did a post on my blog, RnR Reviews about a new site I found, Dad Can Do, that I'm loving! There are crafts and recipes and printables, all kinds of stuff you can do with your kids. I'm talking really cool stuff and not your everyday kindergarten crafts that I find most places. What's even cooler is that the site has a lot of green crafts.

Ratchet's Spaceship from shower gel bottles

Micro Tin Cans made from felt pen lids. Yes, you're reading it right, these cans are made from marker lids. These are perfect for doll house type settings or throw a few in a boy's action figure army fort. Now that's original.

Cardboard Crossbow that shoots drinking straw darts. I'm thinking this is more for the dads than the kids but hey, that's okay.

Space Vase from two plastic bottles. Okay, so if the last one was for the dads, here's something for the moms.

I'm sure you get the idea. Check out the site, it has tons more ideas that are seriously worth checking out. Ladies, if you don't like it, show your men, they'll love it. I know mine does.

Going Green with OCD

Okay, so I mentioned that I wanted to do some more serious topics and this is about as serious as I get. Few people know this about me, but I have OCD, or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. While that can manifest in many different ways, for me, it is an obsession with personal hygiene. You may be asking what that has to do with going green, but it actually has a lot to do with it for me.

For one, I already wash my hands a ridiculous amount of times in a day. Trying to go green means washing out and handling things that are typically considered trash. For me, that goes against my natural urges. It makes me feel dirty and when I feel dirty, I wash.

Since I've started being more environmentally friendly, my hand washing and cleaning habits have shot through the roof. The more I wash, the more water I use, of course.

Then there's the matter of paper towels. I have to clean certain things in my house with paper towels because once they touch certain things, they are contaminated in my mind. I wouldn't be able to use a cloth because I would have to throw that away. Washing the cloth wouldn't be enough for me. If I were to clean the toilet, for instance, with a rag and washed that rag, the rag would contaminate everything else in the wash.

I know it sounds crazy, but it's what makes sense to me. Perhaps even more bazaar is the fact that since I've had my son, I cannot drink tap water. Before I got pregnant, I was strongly against bottled water, but while pregnant, I could not stand the smell of tap water. I am normally very sensitive to smell anyway, but when I was pregnant, forget about it... it was ridiculous the things that made me physically sick. Well, while I would like to say that changed back when I had my son, it did not. I still cannot stand the smell of tap water and so, I'm ashamed to say, I drink bottled water.

I also cannot stand the smell of pillow cases and wash rags. That, coupled with the fact that I have to wash my blankets if someone else touches them, means a lot of laundry, which means more water and more energy.

Then there's the more obvious things like sanitary wipes and ridiculous things I use. The funny thing is that I don't think of myself as being afraid of germs. I know, it doesn't make sense. It's far more complicated than I can describe in a single post. This is all just a taste of how OCD hinders my becoming a better environmentalist. How's that for serious?

Crafty Recycling Around the House

I've been wanting to organize my posts better, with more non-craft topics, but it doesn't seem to be happening. I'm in a crafty mood lately and I find all of these great ideas while searching out inspiration, that I just have to share it.

Make Shades Out of Mini Blinds - I think this is a great idea from Little Green Notebook.

Dabbled has a great tutorial on fusing plastic bags to make cool stuff like this cup holder.

So She Sews also does things, like these owls, that you can buy on etsy.

Fork Curtain Tiebacks from Dollar Store crafts. I love this site, I especially love this idea because I have some silverware that is not usable as such but that I want to keep. This would be a great way to do that. I think they'd be great in my kitchen!

Recycle old calculators

I found this site that recycles calculators and it occurs to me I have 2 old calculators from when I was in school that haven't been touched since. I'd like to say it's because I am a math wiz and don't need to use calculators, but the truth is, I barely use basic math anymore. Wow, that's embarrassing.

Oh well, if you're interested, Gazelle supposedly pays for them and provides shipping. They do other electronics too, but I didn't check too much into that because I see that all of the time. I just hadn't seen calculator recycling before, but maybe that's just me.

Green Guide for Artists: Nontoxic Recipes, Green Art Ideas, & Resources for the Eco-Conscious Artist --I'm going to be honest, this is for a more "Eco-Conscious" person than I am. The majority of the book centers around making your own paints and adhesives. While I would like to be that person who would invest the amount of time it would take to mix my own paints, it's probably not going to happen.

Now, for those out there who have some time and maybe think this sounds like fun, then this book will tell you all you need to know.

The Green Crafter Book Review

I recently picked up The Green Crafter: 52 Eco Friendly Projects for Every Week of the Year at the library. It features projects like a sock monkey, a sun pinata, sand toys, a kite, etc.

Frankly, and I think this is because I look at so many crafts, I wasn't too impressed. While I like the idea of making things from what could be considered trash, I prefer that they no longer resemble what they were originally. I mean to cut up a milk carton with a yogurt cup in back can be a fun project, but I don't want that sitting around as a permanent fixture in my house. I'm just being honest.

There were some good projects like the sewing and the jewelry items shown, so it wasn't all bad. I just don't think I would buy the book, personally.

Solar Powered Trash Cans?

I don't know about you but this just sounds odd. Why does a trash can need power? Well, turns out that Big Belly Solar has created containers that use the sun’s energy to "automatically compact trash at the point of disposal". Again, I was wondering "Why do this?".

Their answer to that:

Using trashcans that have to be emptied less often is another innovating way of saving gas in our vehicles.

You can find more info here. I thought I should add a couple answers to some obvious question:

The trashcans are bolted to the ground and weigh 300 pounds. They open like a mailbox, preventing animals and people from getting at the trash. Big Bellys send out a wireless notice when it’s time to empty the trash. They also seal themselves once they’re completely full, so no one can stuff more trash into them.

Personally, I find these things fascinating and it makes me glad there are so many people working on these things because if it were left up to me, I would have never thought of this.
