Updated course registration information

As part of our commitment to continuous improvement, the business curriculum has changed, effective this fall. We streamlined the curriculum based on feedback from students, alumni, and industry partners. The 10 credit hour requirement has not changed, but we’ve reconfigured the content into a different set of courses that better suit student’s learning needs. For a graphical summary of the revision, see the post on the Illinois PSM blog.

A few special conditions apply to transition to the new curriculum. They are noted below.

This fall, you will take two business courses and the PSM industry seminar. Each business course is a half-semester course, and each earns two credit hours. The industry seminar meets weekly all semester. The courses are:

BADM 508 - Leadership and Teams
CRN 57913 (Section TM2)
2 hrs.
11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday
Meets August 22 - October 12

BADM 595 - Business Fundamentals
CRN 56572 (Section PSM)
2 hrs. *
6:00 p.m. - 7:20 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday
Meets October 18 - December 6
* Note: This course is currently a one credit hour course. In the fall, the course will change to two credit hours. Register now for one hour. After the start of the fall semester, we will change your registration to two credit hours.

PSM 501 - PSM Industry Seminar I
CRN 56168 (Section A)
0 or 1hr. **
6:00 p.m. - 7:20 p.m. Wednesday
Meets all semester
** Note: This is currently a zero credit hour course. Beginning this fall, you have the option of earning one credit hour. The zero credit hour option does not impact your grade point average; the final course grade is either “S” or “U” (satisfactory or unsatisfactory). If you choose the one credit hour option, a letter grade is assigned (“A”, “B”, “C”, etc.) and is included in calculating your grade point average. When you register, you will automatically enroll for zero credit hours; after the semester begins, you will be given the option of voluntarily changing to one credit hour. The one hour does not satisfy any other degree requirement.

See the “Registration” section below for instructions and a link to the online registration system.

psm.illinois.edu

Current Student Information | Illinois PSM | University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Second Year Students – Fall 2011 Business Courses

For students entering in Fall 2011, tuition has been held to last year's rates. However, tuition has been reallocated across the program’s terms: fall and spring semester tuition has increased, but summer tuition has decreased by the equivalent amount. Total tuition for the entire program is unchanged. Full time enrollment, i.e., at least 12 hours, is required in fall and spring semesters. Enrollment is required in the summer term for the internship.

Important notes:

(1) Tuition amounts shown are for 12 or more hours (Range I) in fall and spring terms, and for 0-2 hours (Range IV) in the summer term. Summer enrollment in PSM 555 (Internship) is required. Students must enroll in 12 or more hours in fall and spring semesters.

(2) Tuition rates are guaranteed for the planned duration of a PSM cohort. A cohort is defined by semester and year of initial enrollment; the planned duration of a PSM cohort is four consecutive terms including summer. For example, tuition rates for students initially enrolling in Fall 2011 are guaranteed through Fall 2012. If enrollment continues after the planned duration of a cohort, tuition rates of the immediately following cohort will apply. Fees, however, vary by year.

(3) Fee details are available from the Office of the Registrar. A PSM program fee of $1,200 is assessed in fall and spring semesters.

(4) Tuition is typically set in March for the academic year that begins in August (fall); fees are typically set in June.

(5) Tuition and fees are subject to change without notice.

(6) Residency classification information is available from the Office of the Registrar.

Other Expenses

You should carefully plan for other expenses including housing, food, books and supplies, Internet service, transportation, clothing, moving expenses (including utility start-up costs), and other personal expenses. The Office of the Registrar provides expense estimates to help you plan. Note that these estimates are for fall and spring semesters only and do not include estimates for summer. Because of the required PSM internship, plan for the additional summer living expenses and transportation costs.

International Applicants

After admission, international applicants must provide evidence of financial resources to cover one calendar year’s expenses. This is required in order to issue visa eligibility documents. The amount required is currently $48,018.

Financial Aid

As a professional program, Illinois PSM students are responsible for securing adequate funds to cover tuition, fees, living expenses, and all other costs.

Financial assistance in the form of full or partial waiver of tuition and fees is rarely available to Illinois PSM students (except for statutory waivers). Departments providing assistance that includes waivers must pay Illinois PSM tuition and fees on students’ behalf.

Illinois PSM students may be eligible for student loans. Visit the Office of Student Financial Aid for additional information. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, is generally required.

Because of the demanding course load and the comparatively short duration of the program, employment while enrolled in the Illinois PSM is discouraged.

psm.illinois.edu

News & Announcements | Illinois PSM | University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

News & Announcements

June 10, 2011

The Illinois PSM in Plant Biology is now recognized by the Council of Graduate Schools’ Professional Science Master’s (PSM) initiative (sciencemasters.com).

The new Plant Biology professional MS degree program in the Department of Plant Biology formally joins the 70 PSM member programs nationwide that offer a blend of biotechnology expertise and business skills. Across all disciplines, there are currently 239 PSM programs offered at 110 institutions.

The Illinois PSM in Plant Biology prepares scientists for the needs of biotechnology industries in agriculture, medicine and the environment. Its collaborations within the national organization will position the Plant Biology PSM to contribute broadly to the excellence of these distinctive and emerging graduate programs in the math and science disciplines.

Scientific Discovery and Biotech

Graduate students in the Plant Biology PSM build a broad, interdisciplinary expertise around a strong biotechnology core.

Embedded within the graduate programs in the School of Integrative Biology, Plant Biology PSM students enjoy the charged atmosphere of scientific discoveries for which the University of Illinois is globally recognized.

Moreover, PSM students themselves are encouraged to pursue research, forging unique skills and credentials from direct participation in graduate scientific inquiry.

Science + Business

Along with a sound footing in the biotechnology-related disciplines, students are introduced to the modes by which scientific discoveries are translated to the commercial realm. The program fosters students’ efforts to cultivate meaningful relationships with industry partners, from whom they learn about directions and needs of biotechnology enterprises.

To prepare students to enter these industries and to function successfully at the interface of science and business, the PSM provides essential business knowledge and real-world experience to build professional skills in key areas of communication, management and leadership.

Careers

By merging biotechnology-focused training with business knowledge and professional skills, the Plant Biology PSM equips students for diverse entry points into agricultural, medical and environmental enterprises that demand strong science credentials and business acumen. The sources of career opportunities span industry, not-for-profit, and government organizations. Career possibilities include

product development and marketing,

government and public relations,

design and implementation of regulatory strategies,

market analysis and feasibility studies,

application of new customer support models, and

technology transfer and intellectual property ventures.

Program Structure and Requirements

The 16-month, non-thesis, biotechnology-focused M.S. degree progam requires 42 semester credit hours of full-time study on the Urbana-Champaign campus.

Based on their interests and goals, the small cohort of PSM students admitted each fall customize their science curriculum in close consultation with the program coordinator and with counsel provided by industry partners. With the import of graduate-level opportunities both in and outside the classroom, students establish a knowledge base in the biotechnology-related disciplines, build critical thinking skills, and enhance leadership and innovation aptitudes that are broadly applicable to their careers.

The program is composed of four curricular components:

Science - Study is available in plant biochemistry, growth and development, ecology and global change, molecular genetics and biotechnology, bioinformatics and systems biology. The Plant Biology seminar course, offered each semester, is strongly recommended.

Business - The business curriculum offers basic knowledge and skills essential for managerial and leadership roles in industry, government and nonprofit organizations.

Internship and Experiential Learning - An embedded internship experience in either industry or government is required. Research experience at Illinois is strongly encouraged.

Industry Seminar

The Illinois PSM in Plant Biology program targets immediate and emerging plant science- and technology-based industry needs. To that end, the program intensively integrates graduate scholarship on the leading edge of plant sciences with essential business knowledge and skills.

The Plant Biology PSM is excellent preparation for management positions in agricultural, environmental, or biotechnological organizations. Success in these positions requires more than technical expertise – it also takes inventive thinking, leadership abilities, and entrepreneurial skills. Career opportunities span business, industry, not-for-profit, and government organizations in

customer support,

government and public relations,

marketing,

product development,

regulatory affairs,

safety, and

technology transfer.

Students can customize their curriculum in consultation with the program coordinator based on their interests, goals, and career aspirations.

Summer Registration

Don't forget to register for the summer term! Registration begins on April 4, 2011. Current students should register for PSM 555 (Internship), CRN 35644, for 0 credit hours. Register via the UI-Integrate system.

Will you live more than 50 miles from campus for your internship? If so, you can register in absentia which will exempt you from certain summer term fees. Complete the in absentia form [PDF] and submit it to the Graduate College for approval; then complete your registration in the UI-Integrate system. To see what fees are exempt, refer to the Graduate College Handbook (section B, item 4).

Most financial aid requires that you registered for at least three credit hours in the summer term. If this applies to you, contact Dr. Sightler to discuss options (sightler@illinois.edu, (217) 265-5363).
