Listening test

Section 1. A telephone conversation between a Veterinarian and someone from postal services discussing possibilities of redirecting mail.

Questions: filling the following details in a form – name, reason for changing the address, old and new address, etc.

Section 2. Two students and their professor are talking about a research they are doing about websites.

Questions: Filling in the gaps inside a table. In columns there were five different types of people who make a website: families, businesses, “networkers”, etc. In rows there were “group” (such as families), “characteristics” (such as women), “reason” for using a website.

Reading test

Passage 1. Comparison of human knowledge of ocean and moon. How oceans are explored, use of sound to retrieve details of the ocean floor. Other uses of sound in oceans.

Passage 2. A story about crocodiles, an experiment in Australia that tested how crocodiles are influenced by the drought, and how they have survived the changes in climate and time.

Questions: matching headings to paragraphs, filling in the gaps (a summary of the article).

Passage 3. A story about the invention of telegraph.

Questions: which of the paragraphs contains the following information, in which year happened the following… (a list of years and incidents).

Writing test

Writing Task 1 (a report)
Three pie charts about young Australians secondary school leavers in years 1980, 1990 and 2000. Each pie showed the proportion of school leavers that continued studying, were employed or unemployed. Write a report to a university lecturer describing the pie charts below.

Writing Task 2 (an essay)
Many people say that air travel brings harm to the environment from air pollution, which is much higher from airplanes than from cars. Therefore it is necessary to persuade people to use cars more and air travel less. Do you agree or disagree?

Questions: filling in the gaps.

Section 2. A talk of a guide about the history of a place.
Questions: multiple choice and locate some specific positions on a given map.

Section 3. A conversation between a student and his tutor about a project.
Questions: About sources of information that the student was looking for (A: from the previous materials, B: attend a class, or C: library sources), filling in the gaps, multiple choice.

Section 4. An Indian company that was established and now is managed by a woman.
Questions: filling in the gaps and multiple choice.

Reading test

Passage 1. About bamboo.
Questions: information matching – which paragraph contains the following information, match statements to names of speakers, T/F/NG.

Passage 2. Children’s literature.
Questions: sentence completion, T/F/NG.

Passage 3. The uses of talc in 3 areas: chewing gum manufacturing, olive oil extraction and planting crops.
Questions: which area uses talc for the following purposes, summary completion, short answer (2 questions) .

Reading test

Passage 1. Tour and history of the Jack London Square.

Passage 2. Company car-pool policy.

Write a letter to the airport flight manager about missing a business trip due to an accident that happened at the airport. Explain:

Writing task 2 (an essay)
Newspapers and magazines will not be available in the near future because large amounts of information from the Internet will replace them. Do you agree or disagree? Give some examples from your own experience.

“The best advice for students preparing for IELTS, especially for the speaking section, would be to be yourself and keep it simple. If you try to learn your answers beforehand, you will lose marks as the examiners pick that up immediately. Speaking in short simple sentences does the trick. Speak slowly so that you are well understood. This is very important as we may have very different accents. Practice speaking with friends to get the natural flow.

Reading, Writing and Listening skills can be practiced with the help of IELTS materials available online. There are a lot of websites providing free samples which are worth going through.

Last but not the least, believe in yourself and have a good rest before the exam. It will be hard to concentrate especially on the listening part if your mind is not fresh.
