There is nothing more welcoming in your garden than some sort of seating that invites your guests to sit down, relax and just enjoy the beauty of your garden. A simple garden bench or two can do exactly that. The bench should not only issue an invitation to your guest to rest awhile, but also offer something to focus one’s attention upon.

A bench placed near a garden fountain for instance, is ideal. Or place a few along a path that winds among flowerbeds that bloom all season. Consider purchasing a gazing globe and/or a birdbath. Bird feeders are another idea as most people enjoy watching our feathered friends play nearby. Last but not least, hang a melodic wind chime in a nearby tree or on a Shepard’s hook for an overall restful effect.

Garden benches are available in all sorts of sizes and materials. Wood, metal, vinyl, and concrete or stone are the most popular materials used. If you decide on a bench made of metal, be aware of the future maintenance involved like having to scrape and paint every year or so. Also beware these are often not very good quality. White vinyl benches are ok providing you store them out of the weather during the wintertime and you’re ok with the flimsy feel sitting on them. Colored vinyl benches tend to fade when placed in a sunny spot of your garden.

The most carefree garden bench is made of unpainted concrete or stone. Yet, as with everything else that spends the majority of its life in the out of doors, even concrete requires some maintenance. In this case, a quick, annual pressure washing may be in order. Another thing to consider with a garden bench made of concrete is its weight. Depending upon the size you choose, it may not be easy to move. With that thought in mind, consider carefully where you place it in your yard as it’s likely to become permanent.

Wood benches can also mean maintenance depending on the type of wood the bench is made out of. Cedar benches especially those made out of Western Red Cedar are very durable and will give you years of enjoyment. While Cedar benches will last for years those made from Teak will last you a lifetime. This is because of the oils in the wood which help repel moisture and insects. Either Cedar or Teak wood if left unfinished will turn a light gray over time but leaving it natural will save you a lot of maintenance yet it will not affect its longevity.

You can find garden benches just about anywhere in the spring and summer. If your pocketbook can only afford a less expensive garden bench, check out the discount and department stores. No doubt you can find a bench you like for less but don’t expect them to last very long. Your more expensive benches are usually found in garden specialty shops in town or special outdoor furniture stores on the internet.

Quality garden benches add a permanent sense of beauty to your outdoor space and become superb accents among your plants and flowers. Or if you are looking for a great place to sit and read a book, having a great garden bench to sit on while reading that book is the perfect place.

While many of us enjoy getting out and working in our yards and gardens, there will come times when we simply need some professional help with landscaping around our homes. Landscaping contractors have the experience and tools to help make any plans we have for the outdoor areas around our homes come true.

So if you’re considering making more than just minor changes to your landscape you may be curious about how a professional landscaper can help you. O I’m sure you realize they can help if you are willing to get them to do the work but how else might they be able to help. Busy homeowners today care about the external appearance of their home as much as they do the interior and I am sure you are no different.

We all can’t be experts at everything so when I need to know something that I’m not an expert in I turn to a professional in that area. You don’t have to get them to do the work but they are the ones I want to learn and get advice from. Landscaping should be no different. For instance you can turn to a landscaping contractor for design ideas or to handle one aspect of your outdoor project.

A licensed landscape contractor has been specially trained to meet your landscaping needs, whether for practical purposes or cosmetic. They can help you with everything from a complete landscape design to driveways, patios, and decks.

The Benefits Offered by Landscaping Designers and Contractors

Few homeowners are savvy as to the best way to enhance landscape features. Landscaping contractors can help you with this. They can also find designers, who often use landscaping software to plan out their designs which can save you money in the long run. This allows you to preview your project and make adjustments before you get started. Sometimes it is interactive software so you can see very easily how it would look with a couple of different designs.

Like other qualified professionals, different landscape contractors will have specific areas of experience and expertise. But a good Landscape designer should be able to help you with the best way to enhance your landscape.

- For instance: How to enhance a garden pond with a pond bridge, wooden “playscapes” for children, walkthrough gardens. Or the placement and selection of trees, shrubs, and other flora to balance the yard and enhance visual appeal.

- Or how about using different types of landscape lighting and when and how to use each for maximum benefit. Like using contour lighting, up-lighting, moonlighting, or backlighting techniques for different effects.

- If spare time is a problem, easy-care landscapes may be the answer and a landscaping contractor with experience in designing can greatly reducing upkeep efforts. For example; they can design a mower-friendly lawn without grass peninsulas and islands that slow down mowing, and require lots of turning and maneuvering. Or opt for a low water landscape design using drought-tolerant plants and ground covers to conserve water and decrease maintenance needs.

- Small yards can be made to look larger using the expertise of a landscape contractor familiar with perspective techniques. Angling plants toward each other, extending to the rear of the landscape. This will make the yard look longer and more spacious. It also will add visual interest and enhanced beauty.

Whether you use a landscaping designer to get some ideas or redesign your complete yard. And whether you hire a landscape contractor to do the work or you take it from design to completion on your own. A landscape designer contractor can do a lot for you and getting the right one is very important.

Some are more experienced with correcting landscape flaws and the use of flora enhancements to bring beauty and balance to the yard. The expertise of another landscaping contractor might be concrete driveways, walkways, and custom edging the landscape perimeter.

A qualified contractor with a landscaping contractor license can increase the external beauty of your home, correct landscape problems, and bring balance to the yard. This will increase the real estate market value of your home and selecting the right contractor for the job is important.

Word of mouth referrals, local licensing authorities, and Internet resources such as www.handycanadian.com are great resources for finding a qualified landscaping contractor in your area.

It’s easy to understand why it’s nice to own a home in the hills. The panoramic views from the top make the cost worthwhile to own a plot of land on a hill. But landscaping-wise, it’s a challenge. If this is the case for your yard, then prepare yourself for some added work.

Hillside landscaping is one of the most common landscaping challenges homeowners face. A slope of 4 degrees or more requires special treatment not only to make it look better, but to keep it from causing problems in the future. Hillside landscaping may take a little more work than landscaping flat areas, but the end results are worth it. A little planning and creativity can turn a problematic hillside into one that is most attractive.

Landscaping a slope or hillside can be quite a challenge for most homeowners. Other than using deep rooted plants, rock walls, retaining walls, and decks to create terraces, most folks don’t have any idea of what to do with them. The primary landscaping idea seems to be to create as many flat/level areas as possible. Sloped surfaces are very limiting as to the type of plants you can use. Some plants though love hilly areas for the added drainage and increased sun exposure they provide.

One of the major problems is sloped and hillside lawns and landscapes tend to develop dry dead spots during the hot part of the season. This is primarily due to water run off before it has a chance to saturate into the soil. Deep saturation is a key to healthy lawns and plants. Deep watering helps establish deeper roots that can handle summer heat stress. So the way you water is a very important way of having a successful hillside landscape.

Water that runs off or just barely breaks the surface, obviously does the landscape or lawn very little good. So how do you give landscaping and lawn on a slope better saturation?

Split your water cycle duration into two or three short cycles. If your water cycle is 30 minutes, you might split the cycle into three 10 minute cycles. So on watering days, you’ll run the system for the specified amount of time, let it soak for a few hours, then repeat this for the number of times needed.

To determine the exact amount of time needed, turn on the lawn sprinkler and watch for how long it takes for runoff to begin. This is the maximum of how long each cycle should be. Don’t just split your cycles into different days. You need deep saturation for healthier plants. Plants and lawns like infrequent deep watering much more than frequent shallow watering.

Landscaping and specimen plants on a hillside will also benefit from better saturation. Plants should be planted in larger holes filled with good soil that absorbs water easily. Also, dams and water wells should be built on the downhill side of the plant. This will help give the water time to soak straight down to the root zone before it runs off.

Contrary to popular opinion, hillsides can make good gardening land, and it pays to landscape them, if you are living in hill country or just have a little hill on which your home stands. Though it is challenging, it also has the advantage of producing one of the most interesting gardens around.

Mulching is one of the most important parts of gardening. Here we are going to talk about the reasons for mulching, what kinds of mulches there are, and how much and where to put it.

Reasons:

1.	It keeps down weeds by blocking the light that allows weeds to germinate.
2.	Mulch will slow down the evaporation of moisture from the soil, which also will keep the soil from drying out and creating a crusty soil.
3.	Earthworms love organic mulch; they eat the organic matter and produce castings. When they move around in the soil the tunnels they make aerate the soil and improve the texture. Other organisms do the same. All the work they do makes a nutrient-rich substance that our plants need. This process is actually decomposition, which adds valuable organic humus to the soil.

Types of Mulch:

Organic Mulch
Here you have organic wastes like shredded tree barks or light pruning, seasoned sawdust, wood shavings, peanut shells, cocoa bean hulls, rice husks, ground corn cobs, grass clippings, unused vegetable waste and seaweed.
Organic mulch keeps the soil cool and maintains an even soil temperature. If bark chips and sawdust are used they may delete nitrogen from the soil when they decompose, so add some nitrogen to the soil before and then after laying down such mulches.

Compost
When we speak of mulching we often mean using a layer of organic material on the surface of the soil, from dried lawn clippings to strips of newspapers. As time goes by this organic material decomposes because of the various agents present in the soil and will yield the all-important humus matter.

If you plan on using animal manure, which is nutrient-rich mulch, it should be combined with other material like lawn clippings or straw. Make sure this mixture is well rotted and then it will provide much needed nitrogen to the soil.

Compost mixed with rough mulch like bark chips (called living mulch) is an excellent pick for mulching your soil or beds. Compost is one of the best forms of mulch.

Black Plastic Sheets
If organic methods are not your style then take a look at black plastic sheets that are used for mulching the soil. It affords excellent weed control and moisture conservation, if done properly.

Lay the plastic mulch on top of the soil or beds beforehand then cut x-shaped slits in the plastic and then just fold back underneath the flaps to plant. When performing this method make sure not to completely fill the hole in the plastic with the plant even when mature.

Place holes or slits on the sides around the plastic to allow the passage of water and air for the benefit of the roots. The extra slits are crucial when using plastic to allow excess moisture to drain and prevent water-logging, which can happen on wet days.

Simple steps to mulching:

1. Distribute the mulch material to a depth of at least 3 to 5 inches. The more coarse the material, the greater the depth you should add.
2. Place the mulch between and around the plants, but allow the immediate area around the base of the stems of annuals and perennials to be free of it.
3. Moisten the mulch.

When mulching trees and shrubs, make sure you keep the mulch approximately 5 – 10 inches from the base of the tree. Over time mulch on trunks, even with organic matter too close to the trunk of the plant, will cause many problems down the road.

Creating Mulch with your lawn mower
This is a simple method of using fallen leaves to create mulch. Having a good sharp mulch blade on a lawn mower will be the best mulcher you can find. It will cut the grass blades and leaves into tiny pieces and at the same time, producing a rougher textured mulch to cover the soil.
With this method you do two jobs at once. Clean up the leaves of your yard and create great mulch for your garden. It also keeps more leaves off the street that tend to clog the drain system and cause a lot of problems for your community.
Using this method over several weeks in the fall will get the maximum benefit out of the mulch. This mulch will start decomposing and forming new organic matter to feed the soil and keep in moisture.

Whatever you do, mulch is a critical part of gardening and lawn maintenance. You never know when there will be a lack of rain or too much of it. If you mulch properly then you are prepared for that lack of moisture in the soil, lack of nutrients needed for the plant, or that unexpected freeze that comes along.

An Adirondack chair is a beautiful piece of handcrafted furniture that is most often used outdoors. Though they are most commonly used outdoors, they can be used indoors as well. While the majority of Adirondack chairs sold today are for adults, there are however, some that are specially designed for children.

There are some really good reasons though why you may want to purchase an Adirondack chair for your children. Adirondack chairs specifically designed for children are perfect to fit their size, shape and needs. As I have already said they are most commonly used outdoors, however, a children’s Adirondack chair would look great in any home as a seat or decoration. People commonly purchase an Adirondack chair for their child if they or their family are outdoors a lot and for some families they want to have an Adirondack chair for each member of their family, including the children.

Adirondack chairs for children can be purchased for just about any reason; however, they make great Christmas or birthday presents. They are also popular because if they are properly cared for they will stay in great condition for years to come. For this reason you may want to make sure that your child is old enough to understand and properly care for their new Adirondack chair. A beautiful and valuable piece of furniture like this should be properly cared for to be kept in topnotch condition. Some may even want to preserve their chair so that it can be passed on to their own children. You can not really put a price tag on a quality handcrafted product like an Adirondack chair.

Since Adirondack chairs are commonly handcrafted and made out of quality wood (and western red cedar is one of the best) they can tend to be fairly expensive. Due to the smaller size though a children’s Adirondack chair typically will cost less money than a full-size adult chair. Since Adirondack chairs are most commonly purchased for adults it may be difficult to find an Adirondack chair for a child in a traditional furniture store. So if you are interested in purchasing one try expanding your search to a store that specializes in selling Adirondack furniture or by shopping online. These two places are more likely to have a larger selection of Adirondack furniture, including a children’s chair.

The majority of children’s Adirondack chairs will come in a traditional natural wood finish, or are unfinished. However, you may find a location that is willing to stain or paint a chair a particular color. If you are unable to find a location that is willing to do it for you it is possible for you to paint the chair yourself. Though this is unnecessary to protect it from the weather (if it is made of western red cedar) it is more attractive to children.

So brighten up your child’s day and encourage them to enjoy the outdoors by purchasing them an Adirondack chair. It’s a great time to be thinking of that special gift for Christmas or a birthday. Adirondack chairs have been used for many years to help individuals relax in the outdoors. If every member of your family has an Adirondack chair you all can enjoy the outdoors together.

Gardening is of course a hobby which is no doubt, engaging, rewarding and soothing. But have you thought of going beyond just taking care of and maintaining a garden to making it look like a work of art by using garden art? Maybe you wish you had a little more artistic flare and wished you could do it. Maybe all you need is a few insightful tips to give it an artistic touch and the ability to see life anew in your outdoor living space.

Just by adding garden art here and there, your garden can become the very personal haven you have always wanted. Employing garden art doesn’t mean using all expensive materials or going beyond your means, after all, we don’t want to beautify the garden at the cost of the house! What you need is just the right touches such as appropriate garden art objects. Even little additions or modifications can turn a mere garden into an oasis with harmony between your flora gardens and garden art.

“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” Thomas Merton quotes.

Here is how you bring “garden art” in your garden.

Having a Theme is the first step to make your garden special. A garden art theme is what makes a garden stand apart from a traditional garden. You can have a desert themed garden or a Japanese garden, an all-green garden, or a bright colorful garden. There are endless possibilities – but all can use garden art. You could even come up with some unique garden art theme which complements the overall scheme.

Having the right combination of Colors, just like everything else in life, can give you the effect you are looking for. Have a good look at your garden and decide what you need to add in order to get that right combination. Maybe it’s stone, wood or metallic garden art. Think of combining bright orchids with pastel plants. Or maybe it’s arranging your pots and plants around your garden art so that the overall picture that results is that of a beautifully arranged flower vase. But remember you first have to have the vase, i.e. – the garden art.

Lighting will make a huge difference. You will be surprised at how much of a difference lighting makes. Under the sun, all the flowers will look colorful and bright, but it is only when you put on the lights after the sun sets that they show their hidden colors. It is as if plants have a separate night life of their own. Have special lighting arranged, as well, to highlight your garden art. Explore shades of light available and choose the one that best suits your collection in the garden.

Water adds an extra dimension with its cooling, soothing and colorless sounds. Water is something which effortlessly blends in any background yet can stand on its own. Making space for water garden art such as a small pond with the water gently flowing down a delicate sculpture adds that special touch. This small addition of garden art in your garden will bring out the best in the beauty around it.

Accessorize with art. The very meaning of accessorize is “to decorate or to beautify.” A garden these days is so much more than pots and plants, with a whole new market of garden art objects available to adorn it. Hanging lamps, wind chimes, painted pots, shades and lights, corner paintings, veils, sculptures, sand and stones; the variety of garden art is exhausting. Choose the garden art objects that fit within your budget and theme and change the way the world looks at your garden.

The aim here is to go beyond mere esthetics. The calming effect of joining nature and garden art has been known for a long time and has been used extensively in the Japanese garden. Being close to nature and beautiful garden art relieves us of everyday stress. It adds an element of freshness and brightens to our day and also our approach to life. A healthy mindset resides in a healthy body. The impact of mental health on our body is far too great too ignore.

In this fast paced life that we live, it may not be possible to go away for a break. So at the slightest hint of stress why not make it easier by creating your personal haven right at home. For a breath of fresh air and a place to relax and get away from it all, add some beautiful garden art to your outdoor living space and enjoy the stress relief and enjoyment nature and beauty brings.

Winters’ arrival is just around the corner but this doesn’t mean that the Winter garden can be neglected. Getting your garden ready for the ravages that winter can bring is very important this time of year. Neglecting the proper chores and winter maintenance tasks in closing your garden properly is only a recipe for a headache in the spring.

Here are a few garden tips to help you get your garden ready for winter. If you follow them a bountiful spring will be waiting in a few months time.

Clean Up
If you want an attractive, interesting and healthy winter garden, that depends upon taking steps in the late fall or early winter. Clean up the garden. Make sure that any garden trash is picked up before the snow flies. If this “trash” is left behind it presents an opportunity for bacteria to find its way into any cuts in the plant or onto the plants roots. Bacteria growth, and possible disease, on the plant is the biggest danger to a winter garden.

Keep an eye out for color when trimming
If you have had your garden for at least one winter season you know what has color during winter and what does not. Trim this color sparingly removing only maverick branches, but be sure to keep the overall form of the shrub so that winter color can shine in a uniform way. If you are not sure, leave it alone and get a feel for what has winter color for next winter. Another thing is if a shrub has a winter bud on it, leave it alone as this is where the flower will come from next spring.

Trim out the cut or torn limbs
Chances are that a torn, cut or damaged limb will end up dangling, or on the ground, as winter progresses. Take care of it early and your garden will look sturdy and ready for whatever the winter has to offer. Look for little cuts like from a knife cutting into an apple about an eighth of an inch deep. Look for a nodule on the limb (looks like a knuckle of sorts) and cut about one quarter of an inch above it on an angle for a proper cut.

Weed to a clean ground
Weeds also present a messy problem through the winter. Not only will they decay and offer disease potential, they will also continue to grow their roots until the ground freezes hard. This will only make them more invasive in the spring. Besides, if you weed to a clean ground you will have a nice clean contrast to the dormant plants in the garden.

A nice clean edge
Get yourself one step closer to a solid start on spring by giving a nice edge job to your garden flower beds before the ground freezes. (Of course you may not want to do this if you are going for a more informal look.) This makes for a crisp look during the winter months, as the edge freezes.

To wrap or not to wrap
In preparation for winter you may have noticed that some people have wrapped burlap or some other material around their evergreen shrubs. Generally, this is to prevent a snow load or high wind from damaging the plant. You don’t need to do this unless you have the potential for a heavy snow load or predictable high winds. The wind is an issue, but remember that all plants need air circulation, no matter what type of plant they may be. If you wrap your shrubs make sure to do it securely but with air circulation in mind. Caution: If you wrap a shrub/plant too tightly air circulation will diminish and present the opportunity for moisture build up and disease.

It doesn’t hurt to mound
Mounding around the base of plants is intended to give the root systems of a shrub or plant a little extra insulation during hard winters. Depending upon which zone you happen to be gardening in, the need for mounding is more or less important. If you do mold around your plants, you want to make sure that you compress the dirt of the mound with a firm push of the hands. This gets some of the air out of the mound and generally makes a mound of dirt look a bit nicer. It also shows that you took a little care in your gardening. This sometimes impresses people who visit your winter garden.

Trees are plants too
Don’t forget to have a good look at your trees before the winter winds start to howl. Look for any branches that may have grown or are growing across another branch or have died during the season. What you are looking for is any limb or branch that may rub constantly on another branch opening a wound in the bark. Generally, you don’t want to cut a branch as winter approaches, or during the winter months, but sometimes it’s necessary.

Porch swings are a great way to enjoy the outdoors from the comfort of your porch or deck. If you are lucky enough to have a front porch or back porch at your house they offer a comfortable place for an afternoon read in a good book, or a great place to relax and enjoy a refreshing drink on a hot day. They are always the perfect setting for conversation and laughter with friends and family reliving memories of years gone by and letting tomorrow’s memories begin. Porch swings bring back a grass roots charm and young and old alike enjoy spending time on them for a romantic evening with the one they love. Just think about how nice it would be to come home from a long day at the office and relax on a porch swing and let your stress fade away.

Although porch swings are meant for porches, they are often found hanging in backyards under pergolas or an A frame. These are stand alone varieties that can sit on your lawn if you wish with or without canopies that cover your head to protect you from the elements. The real question is which type of porch swing is best for you and your home.

There are many variations in porch swings.

One difference among porch swings is size. The standard porch swing size is five feet in length. While they can be special ordered to come as small as two feet or as long as ten feet, you will typically find the four to five foot model in your local supply store.

Another variation among porch swings is back style. Some porch swing backs are straight from top to bottom. This is, perhaps, the most traditional style for a porch swing. You may find some backs offering decorative carvings along the top rail. One important variation in back styles is slat placement. Slats can be either vertical or horizontal, and spacing can vary from swing to swing. Some people find the variation in slats placement creates a more comfortable or less comfortable seat depending on their body style and comfort levels of the individual.

One final difference among porch swings is what material it is made from. Most swings are made of various types of wood, there are some made from vinyl or steel. Of the wood swings those made from cedar are the most desirable because of its beauty, natural resistance to rot, and being insect proof. There are two types of cedar often used – Northern White Cedar and Western Red Cedar. Western Red Cedar swings are considered to be the best option, because of its beautiful rich red color and its uniform, fine-grained texture, which has a satiny luster. When new, cedar is red in color; it goes brown and eventually silvery gray, as it ages. It is also light-weight and has a very pleasant odor.

A cedar porch swing offers a traditional look with very little maintenance. When you first purchase a cedar swing, you might want to coat it with some type of sealer. Although this may enhance its look and extend its life it will also mean work every other year to maintain that look. Cedar naturally resists bacteria and fungus and repels wood rot even in wet climates so if you don’t mind it turning a silver gray color it will give you many years of comfort if left natural.

Even the simplest porch swing offers a taste of gracious living, perhaps because it’s a reminder of more genteel times. So find the child within each of you by enjoying a cedar wood porch swing. What better way to enjoy the friendship of your loved ones and the great outdoors. Few things beat the relaxation of sitting back in the shade enjoying a great evening in a porch swing. They are a great addition to any porch or yard.

There is no doubt that when landscaping you want to have an attractive property, as well as do it within your budget. Landscaping not only helps you beautify your home, but it can also be a great source of satisfying exercise in the fresh air.
When you take care of your yard yourself, it is possible to save money and to improve your physical conditioning. But you don’t want to waste your time and money on a landscape that ends up looking, well, not the best.

Here are a few tips that will help you ensure a great looking landscape for your yard.

Know your soil type:
You should test your soil in order to determine what types of vegetation would grow best on your property so when you purchase plants they will grow their best in the soil conditions present in your yard. That way you will be spending your money wisely, and you end up with a more attractive landscape. Some plants thrive in soil with a more acidic soil, and others prefer a little more alkali. Additionally soils like sandy soil or clay soil, as well as the presence of a loamy soil all can make a difference in what types of plants will thrive in a landscape. If there are plants you would like to use in your soil, but the soil is not quite ideal, it is possible to change the soil to make that possible. You need only add mulch or peat, or to add crushed limestone or clamshells, depending on what you hope to accomplish. Even if there is a significant difference in what you have and what you need, it is possible to over time make soil adjustments to be more accommodating to the plants you desire in your yard.

Plan your landscape:
Different plants bloom at various times throughout the year therefore it is best to plan your landscape around these varying blooming times. If all of the plants in your landscape are at their most attractive at the same time, then your yard will look beautiful only for a few weeks each year, but not so attractive the rest of the year. One way to help avoid this is to choose attractive bushes and shrubs that look good all summer. However, it is also a good idea to stagger plants among each other. Plant tulips and crocus among later-blooming plants so that in early spring the bulbs bloom, and then when those flowers’ time is up, the next plants will be in bloom. In this way the cycle of your landscape is in keeping with the seasons, and looks attractive all year round.

Understand your space:
Understanding how much space each plant needs is very important. There are some plants that require more room for their root systems than others. Also, make sure you understand the spacing requirements between plants. When you plant a new flower bed, it can look pretty sparse but in a couple of years it will be full and look great. Plants and shrubs often need more space between them than we think in order to leave them room to grow. If you do not leave adequate space you will find that they will be crowded out in no time causing them to be malformed and some may even be choked and die.

Use native plants:
One of the most effective things you can do to ensure a good-looking yard is to make use of native plants in your landscape design. Find out what plants grow best in your area, and what plants are indigenous to the region. This way you will already be ahead, in that you know that the plants you choose are adapted to the climate and soil conditions. You will not have to struggle against natural inclinations to keep your landscape looking beautiful. If you do use non-native plants, assure yourself that they come from a place that shares a climate similar to the one in which you live.

Use Mulch:
Using wood chips around shrubs, bushes and trees can help the ground around shrubs, bushes, and trees look more attractive. Not only do the chips cover the ground (often looking better than dirt), but they also help keep in moisture, repel weeds, and provide natural food as they break down. Likewise, attractive groundcover like chicks and hens placed around trees and shrubs can make the area more interesting and pleasing to the eye.

Our home is our place to be alone, rest and relax. It is also a place to entertain friends and family and people you are comfortable with. One of the most important parts of our home, which helps set the atmosphere we desire, is our furniture. It helps make our dreams come to life. One very good piece of furniture that adds both style and comfort to our outdoor living space is a chaise lounge. A chaise lounge is a reclining chair that allows our legs to be stretched out and yet supported. This gives us the ability not only to be able to sit but also lie back and relax or to take a short nap.

1. Truly Great Relaxation

The outdoor chaise lounger has been used in a variety of places both public and private. You may have seen them at the local country club or resort or being used on the beaches for those who want to get a tan or just read a book and watch the day go by. Around the home an ideal spot to use it is on the patio or by the pool. Through the years, the chaise lounge has evolved. Some models are made of wood, steel and plastic and are not upholstered. For mobility, wheels have been added on certain models that make it easy to transport or relocate. You can also adjust the angle of how inclined you want the back to be.

2. Leather, Plastic, Wood?

Before you go out to buy a chaise lounge, you may want to consider if you need to buy one that will require low maintenance. Today there are models made from steel and plastic, they are not just made out of wood.
- Plastic chairs require little maintenance so if they get dirty, you can simply wash off the dirt and wipe them clean. Though this is true the plastic breaks down over time due to UV rays and therefore they do not last very long, only a few years. They also feel light and don’t give the support of a wood chair.
- Steel chairs, even those made out of aluminum, can rust and typically require high maintenance. It is recommended to make sure these models are rust-proofed and kept out of the rain.
For example, furniture made of teak wood requires very little maintenance. This is because teak wood contains natural oils in it and these natural oils protect the wood so it stands up very well to the weather and doesn’t even need to be brought inside in the winter. It is durable enough to withstand conditions even during the winter season therefore it can be used all year. That is why such furniture is called all weather furniture.
Another wood that requires very little maintenance is cedar or western red cedar because it has similar oils as teak to protect it from the elements. Others woods will require some work each year to keep the finish intact in order to protect it from the elements. There are pros and cons with each type of material though I prefer wood for the best feel and comfort.

3. Budget

The last thing you need to consider before buying a chaise lounger is whether it is within your budget. The type of the material used and the quality of workmanship usually dictates the price of the chaise lounger you are looking at. If you have a limited budget, you might have to buy one of the plastic models since it is typically less expensive. However you will probably spend more money in the long run having to replace it every few years. The best quality and longest lasting chairs will be made of teak wood which can last a lifetime. But be sure it is teak you are buying as some places can be misleading.

When you get the one that meets your needs make sure you take the time to sit back, relax and enjoy.
