Artificial Leaf Turns Water into Energy, Very Cheap, New Source of Energy

A team of researchers at MIT’s Nocera Lab, headed by Dr. Daniel Nocera, claim that they have invented a durable playing-card sized artificial leaf using inexpensive and readily available such as silicone, electronics and catalysts – therefore making it the first practical artificial leaf technology. The device is an advanced solar cell, no bigger than a typical playing card, which is left floating in a pool of water. Then, much like a natural leaf, it uses sunlight to split the water into its two core components, oxygen and hydrogen, which are stored in a fuel cell to be used when producing electricity. Nocera's leaf is stable operating continuously for at least 45 hours without a drop in activity in preliminary tests and made of widely available, inexpensive materials like silicon, electronics and chemical catalysts. It's also powerful, as much as ten times more efficient at carrying out photosynthesis than a natural leaf.

While the technology has innumerable economic, political and environmental implications, it uses in developing nations is worthy of much dissemination. Nocera says that soon enough, a leaf placed in a gallon of water and left in the sun could provide a home with basic electricity for a day. Almost any type of water can be used, including waste water.

"A practical artificial leaf has been one of the Holy Grails of science for decades," Nocera says in a press release. "We believe we have done it." Nocera claims, solar tech is 10 times more efficient than regular photosynthesis, & that's just the beginning. "Nature is powered by photosynthesis, and I think that the future world will be powered by photosynthesis as well in the form of this artificial leaf."

The artificial leaf shows particular promise as an inexpensive source of electricity for homes of the poor in developing countries. Our goal is to make each home its own power station. One can envision villages in India and Africa not long from now purchasing an affordable basic power system based on this technology."

Indian giant, The Tata Group, has invested significantly in the technology, and is currently working with Daniel Nocera and his company – Sun Catalytix – to commercialize his artificial leaf. According to a company spokesman, the efforts are the company’s latest endeavour to serve the "bottom of the pyramid."

Farhad Irani from Paypal team has come up again with a wonderful news for Indian PayPal users. He confirmed that there is no need to get an Import Export code [IEC] for withdrawing funds from their PayPal account to Indian Bank account. The only thing required now is a Purpose code which is way different from an IEC code.

What is PayPal Purpose code?

Purpose code is a five digit alphanumeric code which is to be entered while withdrawing funds from PayPal to your local bank account. This code helps your bank provide information required by the Reserve Bank of India [RBI] to identify the nature of transaction. Well yes, this is the new Law by Indian Regulators.

How to get Purpose Code for PayPal Account?

Well, Purpose Code is not same as IEC (Import Export Code). PayPal requires a small five digit alphanumeric code which gives information about the transactions you have made in bank account to Paypal, Banks & Indian Regulatory. There is no need to make any real efforts to get the Purpose Code.

Just wait upto 3rd March 2010 for requesting withdrawal to your bank account along with a paypal purpose code relevant to your business. You can find the list of the purpose code required by paypal here.

If you’ve already withdrawn your money from your Paypal account prior to March 1st, then you’ll have to wait for few days to get the full amount credited back. [No transaction charges or fees will be deducted]. The initial amount you receive back in your PayPal balance will be less than the amount you withdrew; all applicable fees and charges will be credited to your PayPal account separately. Once it’s fully credited back you can initiate a withdrawal request again to your local bank account providing the Purpose Code relevant to your business.

Note : Also, with this new changes in Paypal now Paypal cannot be used for Charity and Donations in India, as there is no Code for Charities.

Google is market leader now and trying to cover all fields in Technology world. One thing which can really make you survive in the tech world is innovation. Google had realized this at an early stage and has always tried to innovate. This is the company which gave us a revolutionary search engine; a 1 GB storage E-mail inbox, when 100 MB was considered enough, for free and also interesting products such as Google Maps & Google Earth with Street View. But they are still not satisfied and plan to bring these services at a lightning fast speed to our homes. Google is experimenting with ultra-fast fiber network internet.

Fiber optic communication has never been exploited to its full potential and has failed in reaching out to the masses . Google plans to change this by testing high-speed broadband networks in a small number of trial locations across the United States. Fiber optic communication is the method of transferring data from one place to another by sending pulses of light through an optical fiber. Google plans to revolutionize internet speeds forever by introducing connection speed of a mind boggling 1Gb/sec for as many as 500,000 people. That makes it about 20 times faster than the highest internet speed provided by AT&T or Verizon in USA. That is also about a 1000 times faster than the average speed we see in Indian broadband connections. Google says that this will have three main uses: To encourage the development of bandwidth-intensive applications whose development had been somewhat restricted before, to explore new ways of deploying fiber networks and provide an “open access” network which gives the user a choice to have multiple service providers. If this experiment becomes a success, Google can redefine what internet speed is all about.

Although, this looks quite promising, this can take up some time to come into practice. Laying an infrastructure for fiber optics is a cumbersome and time consuming process. Also, the estimated cost of the project has been put between $500 million and $1 billion. Google’s lack of experience in this field may also prove to be a hindrance. This will not be a smooth ride for Google and as one industry expert says “If it was easy, everyone would have done it.”

This may take even longer to impact India and the pathetic broadband speed we get here. But when it does, it will surely be very big. Imagine downloading 200 of your favourite songs from iTunes in just about 8 seconds. The prospects are obviously exciting but we will have to wait and see how this shapes up. Via Thinkdigit & Google

But things are changing everyday, Soon Indian internet user will be in need of more speeds for their requirements. Recently, Nokia made its navigation service free to all GPS-enabled Nokia devices so it can better compete in the smartphones market against Apple and Google. Now Nokia users will be able to download a client that enables GPS phones to get Ovi Maps and Navigation for free, as well as, various city guides on their phones. Previously, customers could only access the basic maps for free. Turn-by-turn navigation with voice guidance and city guides was costing extra bucks.

Here are the official words directly from Nokia

Until today, Navigation has been kept in the hands of the few. Today that changes. We realised that billions of people around the world already have mobile phones that are perfectly suited to delivering Navigation. So we’re going to let them do that. From this day on, Navigation on your Nokia, with Ovi Maps, will be free for everyone, everywhere, to get people to the places they love. Now, and forever.

Initially, the free service will be available for 10 of Nokia's phones, including the Nokia X6, N97 mini (~~Note: Not the standard N97 just yet~~), E72, E55, E52, 6730 classic, 6710 Navigator, 5800 Xpressmusic, 5800 Navigation Edition, or 5230.

Update: A support note from Nokia was just released saying that the new Ovi Maps will be released for the N97 on January 28th 2010

Eventually, the software client will be available for all Nokia GPS-enabled phones. And starting in March, the company will begin shipping new GPS Nokia phones with the software and maps for the service pre-installed.

How to Install Free Nokia Ovi Maps Navigation in Mobile Phone

Here is the step by step guide to install Nokia Ovi Maps navigation system in your smart phone for free.

2. Select your device (Model number of your phone), If your phone is not listed there, see step 3.

Unfortunately during my test Nokia’s downloading link was very slow, i suppose it was due to too much load. The link mentioned on site (www.nokia.mobi/maps/download) is different from the one i got in SMS (www.nokia.mobi/maps/dl) by nokia, although the contents are same.

3. If your phone is not listed in above link, Pls visit this link http://europe.nokia.com/get-support-and-software/product-support/maps-support/compatibility-and-download and select your device.

4. Once you select your device, it will provide you download link of Nokia Maps Updater, Download and install Nokia Maps Updater in your computer.

5. Connect your mobile to your computer via USB or Bluetooth, in PC Suite mode, and open Maps Updater. To use Maps Updater, you need Nokia PC Suite installed on your compatible computer. You can Download Nokia PC Suite from here. Additional you can download extra tools like Ovi Suite from the same link.

6. Follow the instructions on Maps Updater and your mobile screen to install Ovi Maps to your mobile.

7. Now Nokia Ovi Maps are installed on your phone, now its time to get Latest Maps of your city. Download and install Map Loader to your compatible computer. To use Map Loader you need Nokia PC Suite installed. Here is the direct link to download Nokia Map Loader

Google launched a new tool in Google labs called Browser Size, by using this tool you can check how visitors view your website. Browser Size tool is based on a sample of data to Google site from visitors. This special too uses a special code which collects data of height and width of the browser for a sample of users. For the particular portion of your site, the tool guide you what percentage of users can see it without scrolling. For example, if an important button like DONATE US is in the 20% region, it means that 80% of users/site visitors must have to scroll in order to see it.

There is no need to check this tool, if your site have some extraordinary content like the one you see in left side image. Nobody wants to miss such things, They do scrolling, coz 70% of visitors are not able to see what there were expecting. But Not everyone is lucky enough to have such content at their site !

So lets see the importance of your own content. Upper portion or the front portion of a site is really very important and is very first impression of your site, if important buttons or gadgets are clearly visible without scrolling, there are better chances to have bright attention of your site/blog visitors.

As far as i can guess, 70% of my home page visitors are not able to see 4th post in their browser without scrolling. You can simply put your site URL and check if important sections of your site is visible to 80% of visitors by visiting Google Labs Browser Size tool.

How to Backup or Restore Mozilla Firefox Profiles/Saved Passwords/Bookmarks/Addons

Mozilla has a noticeable market share in browser world, One of my favourite browser. Almost every user wish to add several useful addons/plugins, but it can be a pain if you are ready to format your PC, or shifting your PC from one to another. There is no default option in Mozilla Firefox (at least yet, while am writing this post) to backup your passwords or profiles, that you can restore after a fresh install of your new Operating System. If the concern is only Bookmarks than You can always backup your bookmarks with Mozilla Firefox Default bookmarks backup utility. Its simple

Go to Bookmarks Menu in Mozilla Firefox – Click Organize Bookmarks
– Click Dropdown menu Import and Backup (for mozilla firefox version 3.5 or above, for eariler version Go to File Menu for Backup and restore option)
– You can backup your bookmarks in 2 formats (json & HTML). Save it somewhere safely and you will be able to restore it after a fresh install of your OS.

What about Mozilla Firefox Saved Passwords ?

Well its really simple, you just have to download a new Add On Called Password Exporter. Download Password Exporter Mozilla Add-on

Once add-on installed, restart firefox and go to Tools Menu and Click Add-ons. Add Ons screen will pop up, Find Password Exporter in the list. Click on Options button
Clicking on Option button will pop up Import/Export Passwords Dialog Box. Here you can either Import or Export and even you can encrypt passwords for safer side.
You can export paswords in CSV or XML formats. A spreadsheet with all your IDs and Passwords would be in CSV format. Save it somewhere in safe place that you can restore with same way by selecting Import Passwords option, as you see in above screenshot.

Manual way is real simple but involves risk of identifying the real location.

For Windows 2000/XP machines the locations for your Firefox profiles are at

For Windows 9x/Me PCs the location for your Firefox profiles are at:

As far as i can see from my PC, its at

Just copy the profiles folder to somewhere safe place, but it may gives problem to automatically show up in the list after a fresh installation of OS. So i would prefer the 2nd way, thats mentioned below.

Download a Free Application MozBackup and install it. It supports Firefox version from 1 to 3.6 and several other applications like Thunderbird, Netscape etc.

After you install the application, launch it. Its really simple as you have to either select Backup or Restore the profile option. If you have several profiles you can choose which profile to backup.
Restoring is same and simple as above, Just launch the application and select restore option and select the file you saved before.

You can use several other utilities/Add ons to backup Mozilla firefox profiles and passwords like

Wordpress has inbuilt pluggins for Related posts widget, What about Blogger ? We previously tried several coding and hacks for blogger related posts widget. But that was restricted for only category wise related posts. Once there was a time when linkwithin got popular because of blogger restrictions. Now we have new Google Related Links widget.

Google Related links is a new (currently in invite only mode) service from Google which can display related links and searches into your blog posts. Here are official words

“Related Links is a tool to help webmasters increase page views on their sites.Given a page on your site, Related Links can choose the most related pages from your site and show them in a gadget. You can embed this gadget in your page to help your users reach other pages easily. Related Links also suggests searches that users can run within your site to find even more related pages.”

To request an invite you just have to send an email to relatedlinks@google.com mentioning your Gmail address, Website Domains (www.ialwayscapital.com) and approximate pageviews you have per day.

They are fast enough to reply the emails, i sent them an email requesting for invite and got the reply in 1 or 2 hours.

You can customize the widget as per your needs, You can edit width, fonts, colors, you can select a option if you want to display searches or just related links or posts. You can also select the number of related links/posts. You can exclude some text from titles like I exluded “I always Capital” for better results.

The best part of this widget is you can see Statistics like number of time the widget has been displayed and clicks done.

Now get your Domain names in your own or any language characters. We all know that domain names are written and approved internationally in English language only since the beginning of mankind on this earth. But now ICANN has taken a historic decision. Read on.

ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) is finalizing the last set of rules that will allow Internet addresses to be written in characters not belonging to the Roman alphabet. So, soon we will see domains written in Arabic, Japanese, Chinese, Cyrillic characters and probably in Hindi (Indian Language) too. And probably after that we will see something like screenshots.
The proposal was past last year, the final plans were approved this Friday, on the 30th of October and the first applications will be accepted from the 16th of November.

The chairman of ICANN explained that out of the 1.6 billion Internet users around the world, more than half uses language with characters not related to the Roman alphabet.
Few countries such as China and Thailand, had already introduced "schemes" that allow users to enter the web addresses into their own languages, but these manoeuvres have not been approved internationally and do not necessarily work on all computers. I wonder now what will be the future of Domain names !! I mean it will be more difficult to remember such domain names that are not in our language and not even in known text characters. Lets see.

Google Maps Free GPS Navigation for Android 2

We are familiar with GPS navigation tools from Nokia and various other sources which are not FREE, before we discussed about Driver Generated Live Maps with real time Traffic Updates, Now here is Google Maps GPS Navigation for Android based phones. If you weren’t sure about switching to an Android phone in the near future, this might put you over the edge. Google Maps Navigation is an absolutely killer app. And it is only available for Android 2.0 phones.

Google Maps already has 50 million active users across various mobile phones, says Google. But what users have today isn’t even close to the new Navigation product.

First off, it’s connected, which puts it ahead of all but a tiny percentage of in-car navigation systems which have no Internet connectivity (Dash is a notable exception).

The application is also completely free. So all those paid navigation apps (Navigon, TomTom, CoPilot, MapQuest, GoKivo and Sygic Mobile) are at an immediate disadvantage.

But even if Google charged for this app, it would still win hands down. The features include easy search (no need for address), voice search, traffic information (from data sources and crowd sourced from app), and street view close up pictures when you get near your destination. Barcode Reader for S60v3 FP2 Nokia mobile phones N96, N85

I’m pretty impressed by the Nokia Barcode Reader. Unfortunately this free and useful application is not there in newest nokia mobile phones like Nokia N96 and N85, both of which are powered by Nokia’s S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 2 interface. While it is definitely odd that Nokia did not include this application by default, How can they miss such great application with these high resolution camera phones. They not only removed the application in default package infact they go ahead and hide a download link on the internet, so you could not get the official app easily.

If you don’t know, the Nokia Barcode application is able to scan QR barcodes, which can contain any sort of information, including web URLs and vCards, SMS etc. If you’re a Firefox user, there is an addon that can create a 2D barcode on the fly, from any highlighted text, or even the webpage you’re currently viewing. You can download this plugin here.

You can also use Nokia’s mobile code generator service here to create your own custom 2D barcodes, for whatever information you might need. If you own a Nokia S60v3 FP2 device, such as the N96 or N85, you can download the official Nokia 2D barcode reader here. While playing with my N95 & N85 i went to inbuilt applicatoin Barcode reader, i tried to scan some barcodes but failed, Why? coz i was scanning 2d tradition Barcodes whereas Nokia inbuilt barcode reader is built to read 3D Barcodes called QR Codes. How to run Linux Applications in Windows [andLinux]

andLinux is a complete Ubuntu Linux system running seamlessly in Windows 2000 based systems (2000, XP, 2003, Vista, 7; 32-bit versions only).
andLinux uses coLinux, a port of the Linux kernel to Windows which allows andLinux to run almost all Linux applications in Windows, without modifications and comes in two flavors: KDE and XFCE.
Since andLinux installs a full operating system, you'll need to make sure you've got quite a bit of free space on your hard drive. The KDE version eats up more than 4GB of space while the XFCE version takes about 2GB. If all you want to do is run a single Linux application like Amarok, Ardour, or Cinelerra, you might be better off checking out KDE for Windows and waiting for the developers ro port your favorite applications. But if you want to be able to run any Linux application you like without rebooting, andLinux is worth checking out.

What you'll get with andLinux:

A fully functional Linux system, however without the usual desktop (you've already got one from Windows)
a second panel (e.g. at the top of your Windows desktop) or a second start menu (in the system tray next to the clock), from which you can start Linux applications
Linux applications and Windows applications can be used simultaneously and you can cut and paste text between them
apt / Synaptic to install further applications

Using andLinux

After installing it, if you didn't set andLinux to start automatically you'll need to start andLinux with the helper app before you do anything with it. After it's started, you can now launch any of the pre-installed applications you want. You can do this in a number of ways, but I'll highlight a couple.
First, you'll notice that you've got a new system tray app running; it's a little KDE Start Menu, giving you access to several default KDE apps, from Konqueror (a file manager, web browser, et al) to Synaptic (a package manager from which you'll install new apps). I'm highlighting these two in particular because you can browse and launch more apps from Konqueror and you can install new apps from Synaptic.
First, if you launch Konqueror and go to the Applications tab, you can browse some of your installed Linux applications by category, from Entertainment and Games to Internet and Multimedia. If this is your first time playing with Linux, I'd recommend trying out a few different apps to get a feel for what's available.
How to install applications? It's very simple, use Synaptic from the main KDE or XFCE menu and browse for applications.

Free Dictionary for BlackBerry with Audio and Multilanguage support

Earlier this year, Dictionary.com’s nifty iPhone app was released. Since April, the app has seen 3 million downloads and is steadily growing in popularity. Today, Dictionary.com (which as part of the Ask.com network that also includes Thesaurus.com) is launching a similar application for BlackBerry smartphones, which has a few key differentiating factors from its sister iPhone app.

In addition to providing users with more than 500,000 words, definitions and synonyms, the app also features audio pronunciations, spelling suggestions, a “Word of the Day” for both English and Spanish and the ability to view a recently searched terms list. One of the features that is exclusively available on the Blackberry app is the ability to access a definition or synonym while reading or drafting an email. The app lets you highlight the word and you’ll be given an option to find a synonym or definition. The app also has a native feature that lets you email or SMS text any word and its definition to yourself or a contact.

Doug Leeds, president of Dictionary.com, says that the features included in the Dictionary.com app were designed to meet the specific professional needs of BlackBerry users. For example, definitions have been condensed to be more functional on a Blackberry screen. Leeds also tells us that they are releasing their API to partners to incorporate into various applications. While Dictionary.com is still finalizing partners, Leeds says that the API will be incorporated on e-books, letting users (but wouldn’t say which one).

While Dictionary.com’s BlackBerry app is free, the Oxford American Dictionary is $19.99 on Blackberry’s App world. Dictionary.com was bought by IAC-run Ask.com in July of 2008 when the conglomerate bought Lexico, the operator of Dictionary.com, Thesaurus.com and Reference.com.

In our previous post, We covered a wonderful and informative article explaining the difference between Intel Core 2 Duo & Intel Dual Core & Intel Pentium D. Dual Core is a name of Class or Architecture of processors which refers to any processor weather its Intel or AMD with two cores on a same chip. Intel registered at trademark for name Intel Core or Intel Core2duo. The overall and final fact is, all the above mentioned processors are Dual Core Processors and have Dual Core architecture except Quad Core which has 4 cores in a single chip.

A Dual Core processor contains two cores & a Quad Core contains four Cores, In a very near future we may see Multi Core Processors with 16 or 32 Cores in a single package. Multi Core or Quad Core processors are widely used for Multitasking, across many application like for general purpose, networking apps, Digital signal processing & most used for graphics applications. Quad Core or Multi Core processor’s performance solely depends on application/software algorithms and implementation. Unless the software algorithm wont allow you to use Multi Core, you may not see any performance difference comparing to Dual Core or Core 2 Duo. Performance gains are limited by the fraction of software that can be parallelized to run on multiple cores simultaneously. Take an example :

If automatic virus scan starts while you are watching your favourite movie, The application running the movie is far less likely to be starved of processor power, whereas the antivirus program will be assigned to a different processor core than the one running the movie. A Dual Core may handle the situation, but what if your favourite Movie is in HD (High Definition) or Blue Ray format !! Quad Core or Multi Core processor wont let you down in such cases. The largest boost in performance will likely to be noticed in improved response time while running CPU hungry applications, like antivirus scan, searching for file and folders, ripping HD movies, large File conversions. I remember once i had around thousand contacts added in my Yahoo ID and i was in favour to save archive of each and every chat with each and every contact. After a year when i thought to backup all archive it was a real headache and ages of waiting to bind all the folders and files in to one Winrar file though the compression ratio was 0%. Why ? Because there were thousands of files and folders and while binding them to single file takes a whole CPU power. ( Well its not only cpu responsible, Hard Disk data transfer rate & ram i have is also making a important role here). Same waiting will be there while extracting the same file. Anyways it took era to complete the job, this could have been little fast if i used Quad Core based system with faster Hard drive and top performer RAM.

Though operating system (OS) support is more important, but adjustments to existing software are required to maximize utilization of performance boost provided by multi-core processors. Also, the ability of multi-core processors to increase application performance depends on the use of multiple threads within applications. The situation is improving day by day as now of we have less choices left. The Crytek has developed similar technologies for CryEngine 2, which powers their game, Crysis. Emergent Game Technologies' Gamebryo engine includes their Floodgate technology which simplifies multicore development across game platforms.

These days Quad Core 2.4GHz CPU costs near about the same as Dual Core 3.0GHz, Lets see the performance difference as mentioned by Xbit Labs review.

As we see in chart, only rendering and encoding tasks showing some performance gains, and in rest of the war, dual core beats the quad core. Results of Excel 2007 and Lost Planet concurrent operations are surprising due to possible reason of software engineering and algorithms.

Conclusion : Dual Core’s higher Clock speed wins in battle for general purpose, Multi Core CPUs are not better in performance unless Multi tasking job is given or software algorithm is supported. Its a nature of technology to be upgraded every moment, you cant ignore that, what really matters is what you are going to do with your processor.

What a Quad Core processor will do is add an additional two cores to the system, if an application can take advantage of the more advanced multi-threading abilities of a quad-core system, you will likely see some performance advantage. If the application will not, you will not see any extra performance unless the quad core processor of choice outclasses the dual core processor, for example the newest Intel Core i7 975, compared to a dual core Pentium D, will be faster at any application, due to other reasons (like more efficient interface to the memory). If you can afford the quad core with no problems, I don't see any solid reason to avoid such a purchase, it won't damage performance, shouldn't raise the power consumption up too much, and with more SMP friendly applications (like video encoding, or playing back HD video content), you will see a healthy performance advantage over a single or dual core CPU.
