Barktober Fest

Hi everyone

The South East chapter is thrilled to announce our upcoming Barktober Fest Event! This event is sure to please everyone from those that show to those that just want to hang out with fellow Shiloh owners! We have scheduled an activity filled weekend with seminars, shows, TDI, CGC, TT testing and much, much more. Barktober Fest will take place October 22-23 and be held at Caledonia State Park in Fayetteville, PA.

Activities start on Saturday morning with a hands on grooming/handling seminar, a rally-obedience mini-class then a rally-o competition. Agility equipment will be set up so everyone can run their dog through a tunnel, over a jump and even through weave poles. We have lunch scheduled then a short seminar by the judge on what she will be looking for in the show and then there will be an ISSDC speciality show.

On Sunday we will start the day off with a mini-class on clicker training - have you ever wondered how to get your dog in a show stance or how to train your dog to give you their paw? Well this class will help. Our speaker will help teach you how to shape a behavior. Following our clicker training seminar we will have TDI, CGC and TT testing and then a show. Agility equipment will be available for those that want a run and we will be grilling burgers and hot dogs for lunch.

Spring ISSDC-SE Regional PICNIC

Spring is in the air and Gloria and Darrel Setterlund have once again graciously invited us to their beautiful home in Locust Grove, VA for our Spring ISSDC-SE Regional Picnic on Saturday May 14, 2011. It is always such a joy to get together with other Shilohs and Shiloh folks, and enjoy a pot-luck dinner while letting our dogs play on their 10 fenced acres. We look forward to this all winter! Gloria and Darrel will be ready to hang out around 10 a.m. Please bring a side dish and a chair and be ready to have some fun (rain or shine)! See you there!! Shiloh Play Day

We had a great time at the recent shiloh fun day and have many upcoming events planned for this year. A few of the ideas for this year include: walks around local parks, picnics, herding, agility, learning about obedience training, tracking and rally-o and we even plan on having someone talk to us about conformation and possible have a CGC class. So many ideas...

ROLL CALL---New Pups in the SE Region!

There have been quite a few additions to the Shiloh world this year, many litters being born and many new puppies being adopted in our SE Region. I thought we could have a "Roll Call" of all the new pups!
I'll start with my own new addition to our family. This is "Lady" (My Lady Lemon of Crossroad). We have been a one dog family throughout our marriage, and I thought we always would be. Wolf (Sera/Konrad 07) is all anyone could ask for in a dog, and we love him dearly. But you know what they say about Shilohs---that they are like Lay's potato chips and you can't have just one......well, it's true! We talked to several people about having 2 Shilohs before making our decision (especially our own SE friend Sylvia---thank you SO much for all your help, encouragement and counsel!!). Once we decided to add to our pack, it was very hard because there were so many outstanding pups available. Male/female? Smoothie/plush? Sable/dual? dark/light? Pet/show? We did know that temperament was the most important thing to us. Ah---so difficult! Finally, we just went with our hearts.

We got Lady in October from Crossroad Shilohs in Canada. She was "Miss Lemon" from the Kisla/Odin litter, a light gray and cream sable plush coat. I fell in love with her from the start, ever since I first saw her picture on the Shiloh Puppy News site. She was already 4 plus months old and the last one in the litter. To me she was the sweetest, most beautiful girl ever! My heart just seemed to say "SHE is the one!!" This is the same way it happened for me with my Wolf :)

Now she is 6 months old, and has wiggled her way into all of our hearts, including Mr. Wolf's. They do everything together and even look a lot alike!

Lady is a cuddler, and she's a real charmer too. But watch out! She steals Wolf's toys and bones and took over his seat in our car. Whatever Wolf dishes out when they play---she can take it and come back for more!

As you can see, they are inseparable.

Now, I know that we have many more puppies to celebrate---I'm thinking of the Ember/Quinn litter,the Frances/Magnus litter, the still with their mama's Sassy/Malachi and Dolly/Motomo litters and many more, so please---- send in your information and some pictures and I'll feature them on this site.

Shilohs and woolies and ducks, oh my!

Saturday afternoon we had our 4th herding lesson at Keepstone Farms in Berryville, VA. But this time we had a very special treat......

....the Ember/Quinn puppies came to try out "duck herding"! There were eight 7 week old butterballs in the pen, and they were giving the 3 duckies a run for their money (when they weren't trying to escape, that is!). Addison and Marti had their hands full this time.

Look at them go! This was so much fun, we all laughed and smiled until our mouths hurt!

Then Abba's Argus got his turn, and he was more than ready. Woooo-hoooo!

Bellegrace's Wolf needed a couple of reminders about "herding etiquette" (no, lamb is NOT on the menu please). But then he settled down to the business of working those woolies.

Here we go, that's better, nice and easy. It's always a good sign when the instructor is smiling.

Another Herding Lesson

We had a herding lesson on Saturday at Keepstone. The weather was nice, and there were 3 Shilohs attending.

Marti and her handsome smoothie Tuck were in the big field with 5 sheep. They are quite a team!

Wolf and Bella Breeze are so excited. Wolf got to go into a bigger pen this time. He needed a few reminders (stick bops) before he finally settled down. Our instructor Susan was very patient with him.

Bob offers Wolf some hot dogs while sweet (and patient) Bella looks on. "Sit, please".

Okay Bella Breeze, show us how it's done! Bella is in the big field like Tuck. She's very fast and very focused. It's easy to see that she loves herding.

Wow, look at this boy Tuck. He's 10 years old and ageless. We love watching him work.

.....and he taught Wolf how to lie down in the water trough----what fun!

Yesterday was the first day of Summer, and Wolf spent some time lounging on the front porch with his trusty tennis ball, catching a breeze. Ahhhh-the good life!

ISSDC-SE Regional Picnic

The SE Regional Picnic at Gloria's was so much fun! We had perfect weather and a really great turn-out. I think around 25 folks showed up and 20 plus Shilohs (plus a Golden Retriever and a Beagle mix named "Taz"). This "pack 'o shilohs" were having a blast running and playing on Gloria and Darrel's 10 fenced acres.

Heather and Marti sure cooked up some fun for us. There were games and prizes, tons of great food, and lots of socializing. Darrel and John manned the grills. Boy, that food was delicious!

Argus was born on 6/24/08. He is one of 12 puppies born to Arabella and Elvis. From the time Argus was 4 days old I started calling him LITTLE ELVIS. He reminds me so much of his Daddy Elvis in looks and temperament. Argus is a very loving, laid back, social boy with just enough spunk added into the mix.

Argus was in his first dog show last August at Lums Pond, DE. when he was just shy of 3 months old. Over the weekend Argus won 3 Best Puppy, Puppy Winners Dog and Best Puppy in Breed.

In Nov. 2008 Argus was introduced to sheep and ended up passing the first leg of his HCT test. Unfortunately, he was only 4 months old, and they can't count it towards his title until he is 9 months. He did get a certificate and a ribbon. This November the ISSDC will be sponsoring another herding trial and Argus will be there to try to get his HCT title.

Argus just passed his Canine Good Citizen Test at 8 months old. I am so proud of him. First to pass it on the first try, and second to pass it at 8 months. Argus and I work very well together and he is very in sync with me.

On March 21 & 22, Argus will be going to the Reading PA. rarities show. I am very excited! Hopefully, our practicing will pay off and the judges will love him.

We are looking forward too meeting all of the new people, and can't wait to see everyone at Gloria's on April 18th. Thanks for letting me share about my Argus.

On Saturday we gathered at Keepstone Farms in Berrysville VA. for our first 2009 herding lesson. The weather was perfect and everyone did well. It was so much fun!

Abba's Dynamo---See How He's Grown !!

Here he is---Dynamo Abba's Little Miracle, back to show us how he's grown! Dynamo is now 3 months old, and quite the handsome boy!

He belongs to Michelle and Jim Wirrell from Abba's Shilohs In Virginia.

Just look at this guy self-stack. He's ready for those upcoming shows.

I told Michelle that he's so big-boned, he looks like a tank!

Papa Catoctin's Peaceable Luke and Mama Abba's Bianca must be so proud.

Michelle tells me he has a very wonderful temperament, very calm and laid back. She has already started working him in obedience---sit/down/come and stay. Dynamo loves to play ball, and big "brother" Nico is his best buddy. Michelle says that he is a well rounded puppy, very smart and extremely loving!

We think he's going to give some plushes a run for their money when he gets to the shows!

A Warm ISSDCSE Welcome to Juli and Holly Berry!

Hi all! Let me introduce myself. I’m JuliAn Hardeman, AKA Juli. I live in a tiny little town called Jarrettsville , MD in Harford County . I first was introduced to the Shiloh Shepherd breed in Florida while my horse was being shown there about 5 years ago. He was just outstanding, so sweet and loveable even to a stranger. It made a big impression on me. When my beloved White Shepherd Akita mix passed away at the age of 13, I decided to look more into the breed. I found Valerie Jones of Babbling Brook Shiloh Shepherds. She is just a lovely person and so willing to explore her Shilohs with me, and just like that I was hooked! I went on a waiting list for Ocean State ’s Dreaming of Snow - Shayla and CJ’s Prince Malachi of Babbling Brook breeding that would take place after all of Shayla’s health testing was complete.

I brought Babbling Brook’s Holly Berry home on December 7th, 2008. She is a white/buff plush girl born on 10/10/08. Holly is formerly known as Ms. Pink and was the smallest in the litter of 6 girls. That has not stopped her one bit! She is maturing quite nicely and I could not be happier. She knows sit and we are working on stay now. Holly is the newest member of the Hardeman household. There are a lot of us! I have a husband, 3 children, and 4 other dogs as well as a few horses. She has adjusted nicely into a quite large family. Everybody just adores her and of course they ask me what she is. So I quickly oblige and introduce them to this magnificent breed. I look forward to showing her in puppy classes this spring. Winter fun for Wolf

I'm smiling because I found a new fun thing to do. Behind our house is a horse farm. They have one horse who is young, strong and full of beans like me. Lately, when he is out in his pasture and I am out in our yard, we catch each others eye and start to play (in our own way).

He kicks up his heels and runs around the pasture, and I (from 40 feet away) happily run around on my side of the fence . It's great winter exercise, and both of us are having a grand time of it!

My name is Audrey Harrison, thank you for the opportunity to introduce my Shiloh Shepherds to you. Welcome to my world...Shadow Hill is located on ten secluded acres of beautiful woodlands in the mountains of West Virginia. All of our dogs are cherished members of the family. Our favorite activities include hiking, camping, swimming and sheep herding. We have been blessed with four incredible Shilohs in the past twelve years, two plush & two smooth coats. Each one has been a shining star in their own way, bringing something special to the breed...

CH Shadow Hill Shilo O'Freestate, CD, HIC - Shilo is our stunning, social butterfly who loves to be the center of attention. He knows exactly how to "work a room", going from person to person for praise & petting. Hearing applause at ringside always makes him happy. He is very proud to show off his talents, like carrying the American Flag, and is a master with Scent Discrimination articles. Shilo was one of the first dogs in the breed to earn a regulation "Companion Dog" degree in obedience competition. This boy is so smart, he even answers the message machine when the phone rings. Almost twelve years old now, he is still my BEST FRIEND, the majestic leader of our pack and protector of our home.

CH Shadow Hill's Destiny By Zion, JHD, HTAD1 - Destiny was my precious "Missy Bear", she was my strong willed companion, my patient teacher and my brave guardian angel. She was also a terrific working girl and remains the only conformation Champion on record to ever qualify on the advanced Herding Trial Arena Dog course. She met every challenge with intelligence, enthusiasm & determination. Sadly, Destiny developed terminal cancer at six years of age. Her absolute devotion and courage remained steady to the very last moment, she fought so hard not to leave me. I know she is waiting at the Rainbow Bridge and someday we will be together again.

CH Ptd Zion's Spirit Of The Skywolf, HCT, JHD - Wolf is such a gentle soul, sweet, sensitive, affectionate and adores all children. He excelled in herding early on and became the second Shiloh in history to receive both the HCT and JHD awards. His titles were instrumental in obtaining official recognition from the American Herding Breed Association for the Shiloh Shepherd breed. At nine years old, Wolf still enjoys bringing in my sheep at the end of the day and often spends hours just watching over them.

Destiny's Angelfire Of Shadow Hill, JHD - Angel was my pick puppy from our Destiny/Wolf litter. I could see right away that she had inherited the perfect combination of qualities from both her parents. My "Baby Girl" is the most athletic Shiloh I have ever owned. Angel has an incredible passion for herding and has proven to be very versatile in handling sheep. Just like the original shepherds bred in Germany, she has the natural ability for boundary patrol which contain the sheep while grazing outside of fenced in areas. To the best of my knowledge, Angel is the first Shiloh to demonstrate this old fashioned style known as "tending". We are looking forward to trialing again in the Spring.

Loving and learning about this breed has been an indescribable experience for me. Honestly, it has changed my life!

My name is Dee Harwood and I adopted Lexy from Joyce Hamblin of Woodside Ranch Shilohs in April of 2007 after my shepherd/husky mix (Chelsea) passed away from old age. We have another purebred shepherd (Alley) but she is “my husband’s” dog and Chelsea was “my dog”. When she was gone, there was a very large piece of me missing. I knew about the Shiloh breed for a few years. A neighbor of mine had one when I lived in the Cascades, VA. I knew how large and beautiful they were but I never imagined that I would be lucky enough to own one for myself. My saying is “the bigger, the better” as far as owning a dog. When Chelsea passed, I took a look at Newfoundland, and St. Bernard, and some others, but my mind was made up about the Shiloh when I saw the puppy pictures

Lexy was Pink Girl. Even though the only way I saw her was via the internet and pictures, I knew I wanted to adopt her. She was so fluffy and adorable! I phoned the breeder in Oregon and she got to know me over the phone. I had the qualifications she was looking for in an owner and I was able to sign the adoption contract. Lexy’s breeder teamed with Christie Yanovick of Ridgewood Shilohs. It was her daughter Trish who flew all the way out to Oregon to bring Lexy and a few other pups back to the East Coast. I couldn’t wait to drive up to Reading PA to pick Lexy up. I fell in love with her again when I saw her. It’s been a match made in heaven ever since! She is the BEST dog I have ever met. Anyone who meets her immediately says how beautiful and friendly she is. That's my Lexy Love!

Introducing Dynamo Abba's Little Miracle! These are photos of Michelle Wirrell's keeper puppy from her Bianca/Luke litter at 5 weeks old. He was one of a set of twins, born via emergency C-section 7 hours after the last pup was born naturally.

His twin did not survive, but Dynamo did, despite the odds. Michelle says that he was such a spitfire from the beginning, they just had to name him "Dynamo". He is already quite a confident, fearless guy, preferring to hang out with his big shiloh "brothers" Nico and Argus, instead of his 3 sisters. His mama is Abba's beautiful white plush Bianca, and his papa is that gorgeous black and tan smooth coat Catoctin's Luke. I told Michelle that Dynamo is a "little Luke look-alike". Congratulations on your boy, Michelle. And watch out, smoothies may become habit forming!

Hello fellow Shiloh lovers of the Southeast! I am owned and loved by two Shiloh Shepherds - Neely (JnL's Carolina Comfort) who is 20 months old and Tucker (Smokey Mtns. Big Truck of Apex) who is now 10 months old. We live in the heart of North Carolina, just outside of Raleigh.

My interest in Shilohs began about 3 years ago. There was a boy scout who was lost in the mountains of North Carolina for several days. He was found (alive and well) by Gandolf a Shiloh Shepherd SAR dog. I had never heard of the breed so I looked it up and fell in love. I had recently lost my two dogs due to old age and was still reeling from that. I had no plans to get another dog but there was just something about this breed. I tried not to think about them but it did no good. I was hooked! I started doing some in depth researching and joined the ISSDC forum to learn as much as I could. The warm welcome and comradie that I received from the forum really sealed the deal. My husband however was not ready for another dog. He was still hurting from the loss of our 2 dogs and was not ready to let another one into his heart.

And so time passed. I loved the breed so much but there are not many Shilohs in North Carolina. I started thinking how great it would be to start a breeding program and begin to move the breed forward here. I had been watching a breeding that I was interested in and when the litter was born on our wedding anniversary I thought it must be a sign. I began showing my husband the pictures of the pups as they grew and his heart finally melted. We drove all the way to northern Pennsylvania to pick up our first pup - Neely. Wow - did she ever school us! She was a little pistol right from the get go. She was so sassy and smart that it seemed we had to keep our minds doing double time just to stay a step ahead of her. But oh how we loved her. She kept us laughing every day with her antics and continues to do so. Yet she has a gentle, snuggly side to her that we love as well. We are hopeful that she will pass all of her health testing this coming year.

I'm sure you've heard the saying that Shilohs are like Lays potato chips - you can't have just one. Well, I guess I'm a poster child for that saying. I found out about a breeding that took place here in North Carolina by two dear Shiloh friends of mine - Bill and Dotty Drummond. The breeding was specific for a gentle loving temperment and for the "old" Shiloh look. I went to visit the litter on a few occassions and loved all seven of them! On my last visit there was one pup who stood out to me. He was the first one to notice us and came immediately to me. He was so very outgoing and sweet natured with big sloppy puppy kisses for all. This was my boy! He came to live with us last April and our lives have never been the same. He is growing into a big, beautiful, good ole boy! He is definitely a great ambassador for the Shiloh breed - making friends where ever we go. We are looking forward to meeting many of you at the fun events planned for this year.

Here's wishing everyone a Happy & Healthy New Year! Thanks to Heather, Marti and many others, it looks like 2009 is shaping up to be an active and fun year for the ISSDC-SE Chapter! We are making plans for a Regional Day, herding lessons, Rally-O Picnic, CGC and Temperament Tests, fundraisers, conformation shows and maybe some agility fun and more...lots of great opportunities to get together with our friends and our wonderful Shilohs. Heather & Marti will give us the details as things are finalized (send them your ideas and desires!).
Also, don't forget to send in a picture of your Shiloh(s) and some tidbits about them so I can feature them on this blog.

For those of you who don't know us, I'm Myra York and this is my 18 month old smooth Shiloh Shepherd "Wolf" (Bellegrace's Blue Timber Wolf, CGC, HCT1). We, along with Sylvia (Neely & Tucker) and Audrey (Shilohs At Work) will be the new "blog masters" of our ISSDC-SE Region site. This is quite a privilege, and we're a little nervous about doing a good job for everyone-- but we know that with your help we can all make this blog a fun and exciting place to visit and share.

Summer 2007 :Chapter Report

Our membership is growing! We have lots of great new people as part of our membership. Along with the old members we have an awesome team! To date we have 41 members in our chapter!!

And what a year we've had so far!!!

Richard and Ms GiGi represented the Shiloh World at the Easter Promenade on Monument Avenue in Richmond this year. Ms GiGi was, of course, her usual royal self and had a wonderful time ignoring those who fawned over her. She did mention though, that she had a little trouble keeping Richard in line and will have to see if she can find a crate big enough for him.

Sabine, Siegi, Elvis, and Tessa went to the Comcast Studios in Reston, VA to participate in a show called "Your Dog's Best Friend" which is hosted/produced by Lloyd Aguero, a well-know local dog behaviorist. The topic was: The Shiloh Shepherd. We'll have to try to get a video of that so we can all see our very own celebrities.
Erica has been busy with starting her own business and she still had time to get people together for some agility and Rally. Congrats on the new business, Erica!!!!! I know you'll do exceptionally well.

Some of our members met at the Pet Expo in Howard MD in May and the Pet Expo/Rarities Show in Chantilly in March. Everyone had a wonderful time showing off their beautiful dogs and spending money on doggie stuff.

Sabine and Tessa were honored in June with a Gold Star for volunteer therapy work with Fairfax Pets on Wheels. Tessa put in 144 hours of volunteer therapy work. We'll all so proud of you guys!!!!!

Marti has been getting people together for herding practice, weather permitting. Hopefully that will get started again as soon as the days get a bit cooler. Be sure to get with her if you're interested, even if it's just to go out and socialize.

Marti also invited us to a Canine Health Fun and Fitness Day at Keepstone Farm in July. There was grooming, canine massage, CGC, and a pet communicator.

We had a great time at our get together at my place in June. We had a big turnout of people and Shilohs. Everyone brought food and my dear husband Darrel was kind enough to stand at the grill flipping burgers most of the day. We mostly just kicked back and socialized for the day. The dogs all got along well, running loose together. I love to see that! Nothing like a sea of Shilohs!

We had a club meeting and laid plans for our projects for next year. We'll be hosting some shows and sporting events. At our next meeting we can get some dates set so you can all mark your calendars. It's going to be an exciting year for us. We'd love to have everyone's thoughts for upcoming events.

I know we have a number of beautiful new puppies out there so I hope their families will participate with us in our events. We need to have another pot luck again soon!
