WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO GET INTO BREEDING SHILOH SHEPHERDS?
We were raised with the German Shepherd, but were disappointed with the direction it had taken. Once we found how fabulous the Shiloh breed was, we wanted to help to expand the genepool and share with others what we had discovered. The Shiloh is more than a dog. They are intuitive,sensitive creatures that get deep into your soul. They become a part of you.

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AS A SHILOH SHEPHERD BREEDER?
We breed original Shiloh Shepherds for beauty, elegance, sound body and temperament. Every breeding is carefully researched so that it will benefit the Shiloh as a breed, in hopes that the best can move forward to contribute to the genepool and help to preserve the breed. We do not breed "just to produce puppies".

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT THEM AND HOW THEY HAVE HELPED MOLD YOUR BREEDING PROGRAM.
Allie was our first showdog, and she reached heights I never imagined. She was a beautiful black/silver smooth with stunning conformation. Her movement was flawless, and she was a joy to watch in the ring. She was willing to do anything for me, to make me happy. She was my protector, my best friend, my pride and joy, my heart and soul.

Foxy is our beautiful old-line Shiloh, a red-brown plush. She is what a plush Shiloh should be in every way. She is broad, heavy boned, and has beautiful conformation. Her temperament is reserved, calm, and confident, yet strong and protective when the need arises. When she enters a room, she makes her presence known with just her stare.

Both Allie and Foxy's daughters are contributing to our breeding program in our quest to produce the best possible.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST THRILLING MOMENT AS A SHILOH SHEPHERD BREEDER?
My most thrilling memory as a Shiloh breeder is shared between two events:
Allie taking her first Best in Show while I handled her in the ring, and Allie delivering her first and only litter of puppies. This was our first litter ever, and will always be extremely special. Our Sera is from that litter, and carries on Allie's legacy.

WHAT WAS IT ABOUT SHILOH SHEPHERDS THAT MADE YOU CHOOSE THEM FOR YOUR PERSONAL BREED OF DOG?
Their intelligence, intuitive nature, and sensitivity; they can read your mind, know your thoughts.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE STORY ABOUT SHILOH SHEPHERDS, YOURS OR OTHERWISE?
My favorite story is Foxy's story:

Zion's Foxy Wildthing aka Foxy came from a large breeding kennel in NY. She lost her first litter, and was accused of killing it. She was basically being thrown away with the label of being a puppy-killer. To them she was of no use anymore.

On New Years Eve, we made a phone call and offered to take her, giving her a brand new start for the new year. We brought home a dog that had never lived in a house before. She made one accident, and after I explained to her in a calm voice that she was to do her business outside, she has never had another one in our house. We took her to obedience class, and earned her CGC. She became my shadow, sleeping next to my bed every night. We found in Foxy a very intelligent animal, one who was willing to do anything just to please you ... all you had to do was ask.

She had a litter of puppies for us, and once she was shown what was expected, she became the perfect mom. She would have protected those babies with her life. She raised that litter for us as well as one more before being retired and spayed. To this day, when we have puppies in our home, Grandma Foxy will share in their care. I have to smile when I think of the reputation she arrived with. So much for being the "puppy killer".

WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE SHILOH IN YOUR LIFE SO FAR, AS IF THAT IS A FAIR QUESTION.
Although every Shiloh in my life is special in their own way, my Allie was and will always be my doggy soulmate. She was the beginning.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ACTIVITY TO DO WITH YOUR SHILOHS?
We enjoy taking leisurely walks through our pastures and woods with our camera.

PLANS OR NEXT STEPS FOR YOUR KENNEL/BREEDING PROGRAM?
Currently our kennel is being remodeled and will be opened in the future for boarding and training. We have four acres of fenced pasture as well as over 100 acres of woods that we use for training. Our goal is to add walking trails and maybe someday in the future, a doggy day care program.

Our breeding program will continue to strive to produce excellent health and temperament from health certified parents.

Our Shilohs are our passion, our lives revolve around them. What we do, everyday, 7 days a week, 365 days a year is for the dog. They are first and foremost in our lives.

Happy Barkday ... Nine Years Young

Happy early Barkday to Zoey, Beloved Zodiac's Magic of CJ's, who turns nine years young on Wednesday, the 10th. Zoey is from the Bo/Nikita litter from February 2001 but now calls Beloved Shilohs in NJ her home where she shares her life with Ellen and Murray Brenner and doggie pals, Gabe the Doberman, and fellow Shilohs Tylor and Sage. Ellen shares "It's hard to just write just a little about our girl, ZOEY. She is our first Shiloh Shepherd and we couldn't have been blessed with a better dog. We don't think of her as a "dog" at all. Zoey has a great sense of humor and a joy about life. She is always ready for a big kiss on the face and if she can wet your eye glasses, all the better."

In 2004 Zoey was named the Grand Victrix for the TSSR. But Ellen shares they would have never dared to guess what the future held when Zoey came to them as a puppy. "She started out as the clumsiest puppy we'd ever seen. She could not put three steps together without falling over when we first got her at 9 weeks old. Murray and I had no idea that Zoey would go from a puppy that tripped over her own four feet to having a most beautiful flying trot." Zoey completed all of her health testing and gave Beloved Shilohs a litter of puppies in March of 2005 and now it seems her son Sage, is following in his mother's footsteps as he was named the TSSR's Grand Victor and and ISSDC National Select for the 2007 & 2008 show seasons.

Zoey has represented Shiloh Shepherds well throughout the years including a guest appearance on NBC's "Today" show representing rare breed dogs. Conformationally she has earned her ARBA, Breed and Rarities (now NAKC) Championships, as well as earned Grand Victrix and NS titles with the TSSR. She has also earned her CGC (Canine Good Citizen), TT (Temperament Testing) and TDI (Therapy Dog) certifications and completed her full HCT (Herding Capability Testing) title from AHBA (American Herding Breed Association) in just one weekend which she earned at seven years young!

Zoey is retired from the show ring and now cherishes her role as Shiloh Ambassador when she is out and about. At the 2008 ISSDC specialty Ellen and Zoey dusted off their show leads as a last minute entry in the Veteran's Class and she earned the "Best of Veterans" title that show! "Zoey went into 'show mode' as soon as we entered the ring and did us proud. She stacked and moved around the ring in beautiful form," Ellen shares. "When she was awarded the BEST OF VETERANS trophy, I burst into happy tears."

Happy First Barkday

Belated Barkday Wishes to Ty, who celebrated her one year Barkday on November 29th! Ty, KindredSpirit Tikaani v MtAiry, calls Kindred Spirit Shilohs in Hawthorne NY her home and ISSDC NE members John and Monica Popaduke her humans! She shares both her home, and her humans, with her Shiloh Shepherd brother and sister Kodiak and Bailey.

We all know how dear our Shiloh Shepherds are to us, but sometimes you see a photo that just reminds you how wonderful they really are, our gentle giants. We're told a picture is worth a thousand words, well these speak volumes as to the temperament of this magnificent breed.

Our first set of photos come to us from ISSDC NE member Eva Girolamo, showing photos of her first grandson Tony and her Shiloh Shepherd Vito. Vito is from the Bismarck/Savannah litter from Sleeper Shilohs/Windsong Shilohs. Eva tells us Vito just naturally did this, "I laid Vito on the floor and the next thing I knew Vito was there!"

Our next batch of photos are of Shiloh Shepherd Dakota who lives in Pennsylvania with his family and his human baby sister Kelsea. As you'll see from the photos he just adores Kelsea. Dakota is a smooth Shiloh from Beloved Shilohs March 2005 Noah/Zoey litter. These photos make us smile whenever we see them, thank you to his breeder Ellen Brenner of Beloved Shilohs for sharing them.

ISSDC Fall Specialty A Howl-in Success

The ISSDC Fall Specialty was held the weekend of October 31/November 1 in Yorktown Heights, NY. Not only were there two conformation dog shows, but also a Rally-O/Agility Fun Run, Temperament Testing, a Scavenger Hunt, Raffle as well as CGC/TDI testing!

Albeit rainy on Saturday, we all persevered and overall it was a weekend of enjoying time with our Shiloh's and some old, and new, friends!!!! There was quite a turnout from the SE Region as well as Shilohs from the North East and Ontario Regions.

On another high note we had several Shilohs also earn their TDI certifications and pass Temperament Testing ... what a wonderful accomplishment. Congratulations to Bailey, Kodiak, Wolf, Adirondack, Koda and Argus for earning their TDI cerficiations. And also Congratulations to Koda, Strider, Vito, Shiraz, Argus and baby Joker (who aced the test but is too young to be officially certified) on passing their Temperament Tests (TT)!

Happy 6th Barkday to Rommel. Rommel lives in PA as one of the Stardust Shilohs. Rommel, NS rbCH G&T's Desert Fox of Ridgewood, CGC, TDI, TT; is owned by Gary & Tracy Runyon and lives with his half brother Bismarck, half sister Caly, neices Cinder and Razzle and nephew Legacy. Rommel lives the life of a retired show dog these days and let's the young 'uns carry on the tradition. His favorite past times are lounging on the family room couch holding hands with Traci, protecting the property against pesky critters, occasionally working as a Therapy Dog, as well as an all around ambassador for the breed.

BG's No More Mr Nice Guy WSRSS aka Cooper is really a nice guy afterall!

Cooper, 12 1/2 months old, from the Birch/Aspen 2008 litter can now add a "CGC" after his name. He passed his testing with flying colors.

"He walked through the crowd of people like a pro, says owner Dawn Swick of Bellegrace Shilohs. "He was more interested in going up to meet the person in the wheelchair and the woman with the walker. I see therapy dog testing in his future."

Cooper, bred by Woodside Ranch Shiloh Shepherds in Oregon, also completed his Obedience Basic II class the week before and was awarded his certificate. From the looks of the picture, he sure appears to be proud of it! Or just maybe it is the bag of goodies his instructors gave him for being such a well behaved student.

Happy Barkday to Bearpaw's "Irish Seven"

Happy Barkday wishes to the "Irish Seven" litter! The Sage/Misty litter, born St Patty's Day 2008, was bred by ISSDC NE member/breeder Nancy Schmidt of Bearpaw Shilohs in NJ. A litter of seven with four precious girls and three boys, several of which still call the NE home.

The "Irish Seven" have some promising herders in their group as well. This litter had the most littermates participate from a single litter at the ISSDC Herding Event held at Keepstone Farm last November. Jazmine, Cooper, Finn and Darcy all participated and all of them received the first leg of their AHBA HCT title with Finn earning his full HCT title! What a great accomplishment!

Hamish and Gareth reside at Mac Shilohs in Central New York with their humans, Heather Yates and James Blackham. Hamish was born at Shenandoah Shilohs in 2004 as part of the Valentine Nine litter; Kota/Trinka. Gareth is from Star Shilohs in Utah but comes to Mac Shilohs via Ridgewood Shilohs (B&T). Gareth was born in February 2005, from Star's second Kota/Natasha litter.

We'd like to extend Happy 1st Barkday wishes to the Harley/Sunshine kids from their second litter born March 1, 2008, specifically Zebrina and Corbin who call the ISSDC NE Region home.

Zebrina, Azzaro's Zebrina Golden Sunshine, is owned by Angelo and Nancy Massaro of Azzaro Shilohs in PA. "Zebrina is the most loving and energetic pup," shares Nancy. "But she definitely keeps us on our toes!" Her pack includes Shilohs Zeus, Zeena and their son Zorro who was born late last year. "Zebrina loves her new playmate Zorro, they keep busy for hours and chase each other around the house," elaborates Nancy. "Sometimes it feels just like a 24 hour zoor around here."

We've had a lot of Barkdays recently and we send our best wishes out to all of our Celebrating Shiloh Shepherds and their families! Today's Barkday Wishes go out to Squiggles, aka Squiggy, and his littermates from the Storm/Maggie litter born February 26, 2005!

Squiggles was the first born male of the first Storm/Maggie litter bred by ISSDC NE members Janet & Larry Biersack at Bay Breeze Shilohs. Janet describes Squiggy as "her soul" so it's no surprise that he stayed at the Bay Breeze Shilohs homestead. Squiggles got his unique name from Janet & Larry's grandson and Janet goes on to say that Squiggy fits his name as he "is sweet and loving."

Squiggles loves his toys, and we're told he carries them around everywhere he goes. However, there is one thing Squiggy loves more than toys, and that's puppies! "He helps us raise our puppies and will clean them and teach them to go potty outside," shares Janet. "In fact he loves puppies so much you have to spell the word puppies so as not say the word as he will get very upset and start looking for puppies in the house." What a great helper!

Apparently Squiggy is also a water dog and all summer you'll find him playing in his pool! When not in the pool, he loves to just lay on his deck in the yard. Sounds as if Squiggy has quite the life at Bay Breeze Shilohs! Where do I sign up?

Barkday Number Four

Mac Shilohs Gareth, aka "poop pot," celebrated his fourth birthday on February 25th! Gareth resides at Mac Shilohs in Central NY with his half brother Hamish and owners Heather Yates and James Blackham. "It hardly seems possible that little bundle of black and silver fluff we first met in April of 2005 is now four and a majestic smooth coated black and cream sable Shiloh," shares Heather. "What a great boy he has turned out to be."

Gareth is one of five puppies born at Star Shilohs in Utah on February 25, 2005. The litter was bred by Sandie Sanderson and is from Star Shilohs' second Kota/Natasha litter. Gareth came to Mac Shilohs through Trish & Brennan Beltz of Ridgewood Shilohs. "We were so very pleased with our first Shiloh sired by their Kota that we decided we'd take another and we are so glad we did." says Heather Yates of Mac Shilohs.

Trish handled Gareth in the conformation ring all the way to his Rarities International Championship, which he earned at seven months old with his Best Jr Puppy in Show win at the Cape Cod Classic in Sandwich, MA. Gareth was the first smooth coated Shiloh Shepherd to earn an International Championship with the Rarities (now NAKC) organization. "Unfortunately we couldn't continue attending shows with frequency and we never finished his breed championship," shares Heather, "something, to this day, we still wish we could have attained."

But Gareth is so much more than a show dog, he was always destined to be a beloved companion to Heather and James, and playmate to his brother Hamish (who is, in fact, his real half-brother). Gareth always looks very serious but he's one of the most happy go lucky Shilohs around and has a zest for life that is just contagious. He always brings a lot of laughter and smiles wherever he goes. Gareth has also earned his CGC and this past November Gareth passed his AHBA herding instinct test with a qualifying run which earned him his first leg of the AHBA HCT title.

Happy Barkday to Shelby, Mustang Lmtd Edition V Sierra, owned by ISSDC NE member (and ISSDC Treasurer) Carol Cernak of Mustang Shiloh Shepherds in NY. Shelby shares her home with three other Shiloh Shepherds — including two of her children, Jet (from the 2006 Jake/Shelby breeding) and Munch (from the 2008 Phantom/Shelby breeding) and pack mate Sally.

Shelby was born at Sierra Shilohs in California, bred by ISSDC PNW member Susi Ramstead. Shelby was one of three puppies born on February 25, 2004 to Hammer and Mirage.

Shelby spends her daily life on a farm as a family dog, but she also has done extremely well in the conformation ring through the years. Her daughter Jet has taken after her mom by tearing up the show ring in 2007 and we look forward to Munch out and about this coming season.

Happy Barkday Sweet Sweet Bailey

Bailey celebrates her barkday today! For her special day she received a new stuffed squeaky duck toy. We're told, however, sadly after about 20 minutes, the duck no longer quacks. We think that's the first sign that she liked her new toy!

Bailey is a spayed Shiloh Shepherd female John and Monica Popaduke of Kindred Spirit Shilohs adopted through the ISSDC's rescue/rehome program when she was 18 months old. "Bailey is our pride and joy and we are so grateful to share our home with her," says Monica. "She is kind, loving, playful, devoted, affectionate, gentle and very eager to please." Bailey was bred by ISSDC NE breeders Nancy Schmidt of Bearpaw Shilohs and Dawn Swick of BelleGrace Shilohs.

Happy Barkday Valentine Nine!

Generally these blog posts are written without any "I" or "Me" connotations, or at least that's the goal, but for today, that tradition is breaking as the Barkday wishes include my heart dog, Hamish.

It's hard to believe it's been five years since I brought home my first Shiloh bundle of joy! And boy did I get everything I had hoped for in his personality but I also got so much more — a wonderful extended littermate family, a welcoming embrace into the Shiloh world, wonderful Shiloh friends, and a passion for these dogs which made me jump into the Shiloh world with both feet wanting to learn as much as I could and help in any way I could. Five years down the road and I'm still learning, making more friends and still loving these dogs!

So Happy Barkday wishes to "The Valentine's Nine," the Kota/Trinka litter who entered this world on Valentine's Day 2004 at Shenandoah Shilohs in PA. Trinka blessed me with the best Valentine's Gift ever and Kota, bred by Ridgewood Shilohs in PA, was handing out cigars!

The ISSDC NE Region is home to four pups from this litter, Hamish, Kassie, Tylor and Ryder.

Hamish, Hamish MacKota of Shenandoah, is owned by myself — Heather Yates and James Blackham of Mac Shilohs and calls Central NY home. He shares his life with his real Shiloh half brother Gareth. Hamish spends most of his time being my best friend. He never really enjoyed the show ring although is pointed, and we have tried our hand at herding and obedience work. He is, as ever, my best photographic model and the inspiration for me to pick up the camera again.

Kassie, B&T's Princess of Shenandoah, lives at Ridgewood/B&T Shilohs with owners Brennan & Trish Beltz and their Shiloh crew. Kassie is now living the life of a retired show dog. She excelled in the conformation ring, being the first female Shiloh Shepherd to earn the Supreme Grand Champion title with the NAKC (formerly Rarities) organization. Now she prefers to chill out at home and is part of her local therapy dog group.

Tylor, Beloved BT Tylor of Shenandoah, calls Southern NJ home with Ellen and Murray Brenner and shares his life with the Beloved Shilohs pack. Tylor started out as a show dog but now excels at his Therapy work. In fact Cooper Hospital in NJ named Tylor the 2008 Therapy Animal of the year.

"Tylor has been a joy and is the most wonderful therapy dog ever. He looks especially handsome with his hair trimmed and all clean and washed by the groomer," Ellen shares. "While he can be incredibly noisy and very stubborn if you want to leave him home, he is such an amazing ambassador to our breed."

Ryder lives in PA as a beloved pet with his Shiloh Shepherd, Australian Shepherd and Coated GSD brothers and sisters, owned by Marion Milavec and her husband. Ryder is also a working therapy dog!

Calypso is owned by ISSDC NE members Gary & Traci Runyon and calls Stardust Shilohs home. Caly joined the Stardust family in the Spring of 2004, joining the "Artie Boys" already living there, Bismarck and Rommel. Caly is from Mason Dixon Kennels February 3, 2004 Artie/Tuesday breeding.

Calypso was officially retired from showing in 2008 after achieving great heights in the conformation ring. She attained the highest levels currently attainable with the Rarities/NAKC and ARBA organizations; the NAKC Hall of Fame and ARBA Master Champion respectively. Caly is also currently a 4x GV earning accolades from the ISSDC and TSSR for the 2006 and 2007 show seasons. Caly became a first time mom in March of 2008 and has passed the "show" torch to her progeny. We look forward to watching them in the show ring over the next few seasons.

Happy Barkday "Baby" Keys

Can we still call her "Baby" Keys? She has, afterall, grown up into a beautiful adult Shiloh Shepherd and frankly today is her fourth birthday. Owned by ISSDC NE members Pat and Jim Hartnett of Blackwood Shiloh Shepherds in PA, Keys was their first Shiloh and now watches over two little brothers who have joined the family, Corbin and Dexter. "I can't believe the Noah/Shy litter is four years old already. Where has the time gone?" shares Pat. "Keys was our first and only Shiloh for over three years. Anyone who has met her knows she is the sweetest, kindest, most loving girl."

Keys entered the world at Mt Airy Shepherds in MD with 10 brothers and sisters. After watching the litter through their eight weeks at Mt Airy, Keys joined the Hartnett family through co-breeder Becky Althoff of Catoctin Shiloh Shepherds. "When she came home to us at eight weeks old, it didn't take me long to realize how smart she was. At every turn she was trying her best to outsmart me," laughs Pat. "We have had our share of 'arguments' and to this day we are still at a standoff on who the Alpha of this house actually is…lol. I normally win but she gets her point across."

Pat and Jim enjoy taking Keys to shows and events as Keys is up to try just about anything. "The trust she has in me is amazing. What ever I ask of her, she gives me without question," notes Pat. "We have been through some hard and very sad times together. The bond we have is strong. Keys is my best friend and my constant companion. I wonder what I did before she was in my life and I can't imagine my life without her. She is my heart."

I love the breed. I thought Hajna and Shiloh would produce beautiful offspring...which they did. My only problem is I fell in love with their puppies and kept four from their 1st litter. Tina Barber got 4 as part of the breeding contract.

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AS A SHILOH SHEPHERD BREEDER?
At the present time I have only been been using my male Garth as stud. I now have Garth's son McGraw, who is currently eight months old that in time I plan to use as stud, providing he passes all his health tests. He has already earned his CGC.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST THRILLING MOMENT AS A SHILOH SHEPHERD BREEDER?
Whelping both litters....and Shiloh being BEST in Show, obtaining his Breed and Canadian Championships.

WHAT WAS IT ABOUT SHILOH SHEPHERDS THAT MADE YOU CHOOSE THEM FOR YOUR PERSONAL BREED OF DOG?
Is there any other breed? LOL! When I got Shiloh he was the dog of my dreams and then I got Hajna and she was likewise. Their temperament, their beauty, their size everything about them I love. I now have seven shilohs, all related. My heart was broken when I lost my beloved Shiloh at almost 11 years of age this past June 10, 2008, but I'm so thankful I still have Hajna and their progeny.

WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE SHILOH IN YOUR LIFE SO FAR, AS IF THAT IS A FAIR QUESTION.
I can't answer that. Each have their special spot in my heart. I love them all.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ACTIVITY TO DO WITH YOUR SHILOHS?
Play with them, love them, groom them, take them to ball games, to our cottage at the lake, go to dog shows. Anything I do with them is a joy. I also like to photograph them. I'm hoping to show McGraw in the near future.

PLANS OR NEXT STEPS FOR YOUR KENNEL/BREEDING PROGRAM?
I hope to use Garth as stud ... the two litters he has sired have been very successful. The pups have been very large, healthy, good temperaments, and very beautiful. And then eventually I hope McGraw will also continue to carry on their lineage. I would love to have a female to whelp another litter, but I'm not sure if I can right now.

ANY OTHER COMMENTS?
I have really enjoyed and am thankful for the friends that I have developed through the associations of this magnificent breed all over the United States and Canada. Shiloh people are wonderful people, and many have become very close friends that I treasure very much.
