The internet doesn't make cat memes like it used to. But we do.

The landscape of the internet has changed quite a bit since I was a kid, to say the least. Gone are the days of the 5-minute loading time while your dial-up modem connected you to the internet, when we made the original memes on Microsoft Paint or the early versions of Photoshop, before YouTube was even a seed of an idea in someone's brain. Now anyone with a phone has immediate access to the internet, and memes are a dime a dozen. It's so easy to make them that the internet is literally saturated with them, and they've lost a bit of the soul they had when they were first created.

It's natural that the internet today looks completely different from what it looked like 20+ years ago. Technology advanced, and so did our tastes. No one has the attention span to watch hours of Nyan Cat racing through his pixelated universe or the patience to hear the Hamster Dance play over and over again while scrolling. But there is a big part of me that misses the human element that went into the creation of all of these early memes of the internet. They weren't purrfect, they weren't tailored for viral success - they were just silly and caught on because they were ridiculous.

So for all you aging millennials or folks born in the 1990s or earlier, I brought back some nostalgic cat memes that you might recognize that I feel really encompass the taste of the early internet. Happiness doesn't look the same for everybody. For some, it means to laugh until you run out of air; others think that happiness means to be in a state of general peace and satisfaction with yourself. No matter what we understand as the definition of happiness, somehow we always manage to transmit the exact feeling, with surgical precision, to whoever is listening to us. Unlike sadness, which tends to be particular for every person, happiness is a feeling that's individually defined but universally understood. Maybe that's because there's so much poetry trying to figure out sadness and all its different sources, and very little (in comparison) dedicated to explaining happiness. That one is easier to understand: you feel complete, joyful, your brain is flooded with dopamine, and your whole body is relaxed. No matter how you define it, you always know what it means.

Since happiness looks different for human beings, it wouldn't be crazy to assume that it also looks different for animals. For dogs is easy to spot: they wag their tails, jump, bark, run around, and live like everyday it's a party. We love them for their enthusiasm. For cats, it seems to be nothing of the sort. They don't have such obvious ways to show they're happy, and that's why sometimes we don't really know how our furry friends are actually feeling. Their tails don't wag; they only meow when they want something, and running around is simply beneath them. So, how do we know if our cat is happy? They have other tells.

They blink slowly while looking at us; they follow us around the house and curl up beside us on the couch; they look for proximity, not contact; they close their eyes and fall asleep in our presence because they feel comfortable and protected. Calling out to all non-cat lovers! Wait… what? Isn't this supposed to be a cat-loving post? Let me give you a quick answer to that: yes, it is. But hear me out. I grew up not liking cats at all and being an absolute dog-loving person. I've never given much thought to cats, just thought they were the enemies of dogs, and that's it. However, as I became an older (and wiser) person, I was able to identify a lot of reasons as to why I love cats.

Mainly, they are not only incredibly funny, but they are crazy smart. The fact that they always land on their feet has to give you an idea of how superior they are. They are the only species on Earth that are able to do that, in the physical way and in the rhetorical way. Not only that, they are the cutest and a great companion for humans as well, without the neediness of a dog.

Some people come home from a wine tour with a few bottles. Others somehow come home responsible for a kitten.

Reddit user Lovable_Geek had snagged a spot on a private wine tour with 13 other women for an afternoon of sipping and sightseeing. At the third stop, a cider farm, the group immediately noticed several cats hanging around the parking area. One tiny orange kitten quickly stole everyone's attention, happily being held and soaking up pets from 14 new admirers.

The tour guide mentioned that the kitten was available for adoption. His two siblings had already found homes, while the kittens' feral parents had arrived at the farm back in May. After the tasting, Lovable_Geek went back to spend more time with the little orange and casually asked the owner what adopting him would involve.

Turns out, not much. The farm taped up a box, added some air holes, and suddenly there was a kitten joining the ride home. Nothing like heading out for an afternoon of cider and returning with an entirely new family member.

The spicy little orange wasn't thrilled about staying inside his makeshift carrier and kept attempting an escape, so friends met them back in the city with a proper one. He's now staying separately in the bathroom while getting treated for fleas and parasites. The resident dog is already obsessed with him, while the adult cat has chosen offense.

Opening up to adoption again after losing your soul-cat is one of the most difficult things.

Our love for cats is insane. It's so big. Every cat that we see, we instantly love. Every stray cat, every friend's cat, every online cat, we want to adopt them all. Of course, we have cats of our own, and adopting another is not quite that easy when we already have cats. But we want to adopt. We want to be those people who save cats, no matter how many of them there might be. We want to have cats always, at every stage of our lives. And yet, at the same time, we cannot ever imagine loving a cat as much as we do ours. We know our time with them is not forever, and we do want to keep adopting, but we have no idea how we will ever do it while dealing with the loss. That's the question that the person whose story we'll be covering today asked too.

This person's story is a little more difficult than the one we described. They had two soul-cats, both of whom crossed the rainbow bridge within a short time of each other. That's hard enough, but then, a few months later, they adopted another cat. They thought this cat was healthy, that they would have many years together, only to find out that the shelter they adopted from didn't disclose some medical information, and for this cat to cross the rainbow bridge after a couple of months. This kind of loss is too big, but this person's love for cats remained just as big even after everything. They kept fostering cats, trying to help them, and before they knew it, they started feeling themselves bond. Who would have thought that we'd have to manage our cats' screen time as well as our kids'?

We all know the dangers of too much screen time. We know it the same way we know that not wearing sunscreen outside is bad for us and fossil fuels are ruining the environment. And yet, some people still put on tanning oil instead of sunscreen, and most of the world travels by car, plane, or bus, all of which require massive amounts of fuel. We try to keep our kids away from screens as much as pawssible, but did you ever imagine you would live in a world where you would have to manage your cats' access to screen time?

Our pawrent below thought a little Cat TV would be harmless for his 6-month-old kittens. He was wrong. One of his kittens became completely obsessed with it - she began ignoring her sister, abandoned her toys, and began waiting in front of the blank screen for her pawrent to turn it on again. She essentially lost everything that made her a kitten, most importantly, the need for stimulation through socialization and exploration. The kitten's pawrent is now wondering: did he just turn his cat into an iPad kid? Will she ever go back to being a normal kitten?

The good news is that they're not the only pawrent dealing with this, either with a hooman child or a feline one. The other good news is that cats have relatively small brains, so in my humble opinion, if they just refuse to turn on the TV for a while, their cat will eventually get bored and forget about it. The video begins with three dogs playing with a tiny cat. To them, it was just a game. But the cat was being chewed. Then they drop it, and the kitten is lying there, unresponsive. We're glad the man filming was there and acted fast. He immediately picks up the baby cat and brings the kitten inside.

Those first moments are difficult to watch because the kitten is so small and still, but the man handles the situation very calmly despite the desperate situation. He performs CPR and bathes the cat, then wraps it in a towel. He keeps going even when there is no sign that anything is changing, and I find his attitude pretty admirable. I don't know how anyone can stay so calm in that situation and at the same time take action. Stopping was not an option for him. His movements were careful and urgent. He really caught this poor baby cat on time and solved things fast.

No wonder the man described the day as a "roller coaster of emotions". The kitten was motionless on the grass five minutes earlier, and now he was responding to the hand offering comfort. He saved his life! The video starts with an unfortunate and frightening discovery but finishes with a survivor standing on four tiny paws. Is there a more heartwarming story? The cat ends up resting safely on the couch and accepting gentle pets from the person who refused to give up and saved him.

This is what we could call a good friend. Seeing a little kitten fighting for his life on the side of a very dangerous and fast road, and immediately calling a friend to rescue it, only comes from people with good hearts and kind souls. As soon as she was told that this little life was left alone, she went as fast as she could to rescue him.

Fortunately, the little animal was safe and sound, although it seemed to be walking in a direction, probably to get away from the noise that was scaring him. The woman grabbed it in her arms and ran back to her car, so she could wrap him in a cozy blanket so he could get a bit warm. The kitten was only a couple of days old and had been left on its own to survive on that road.

Leaving animals on the side of the road is common practice for people who don't want to take care of pets. There are cases where people adopt a pet and later realize that they cannot care for it… of course, not an ideal situation, but it's more common than we think. However, abandoning animals, no matter the size or how old they are, is never the answer. In every community, some people are more than willing to step in and take these little animals home and have them until they are old enough.

There's something else we can take from this story: helping an animal never requires some big effort or anything extraordinary. The main thing is paying attention. Years of watching other people get chosen by the CDS came to an abrupt end with one very fast U-turn.

This newly chosen rescuer was driving home when they spotted a tiny kitten sitting in the middle of a busy road. There was no driving past that, so they whipped the car around and went back for the little guy. Once he was safely out of traffic, they searched the surrounding area for a mama cat or any siblings who might also need help.

That search turned up another kitten. When the CDS finally decided it was their turn, it went ahead and made it a two-for-one delivery.

Both babies were scared and wet after storms had rolled through the area the previous day and night, but their rescuer couldn't find any obvious injuries. With two very tiny passengers now depending on them, they stopped at a friend's house for kitten milk replacement and bottles and got straight to work figuring out their new feeding schedule.

The babies are being fed every two to three hours, and their new caretaker has already started handling all the less glamorous parts of caring for kittens this young. They're also keeping track of each kitten's weight and trying to figure out a reliable way to tell the nearly identical little ones apart. The difference between indoor and outdoor cats is so stark. My husband's cat, who lives in a rural community, has always been indoor-outdoor, and although she is scared of almost everything and will stay away from every cat and human and car in the area, when it comes to small animals, she is the fiercest huntress. Countless times, screams around the house erupted when she came in running with a small bird or a mouse in her teeth. She is truly fierce. And then, there is my cat. My purrfect chonky senior house-cat, who doesn't can't even manage to catch those chunky large flies who bump into everything.

I'll give my cat credit, she does try. When she sees those flies or a bird on the windowsill, she… makes noises. She chirps. She lets me know that there is a thing in the house that does not belong there. But she doesn't hurt. She's never had to, so she doesn't know how. And the cat in today's story is exactly the same.

When a mouse ran into this cat's house, it didn't understand that one of the things that he is supposed to do, as a cat, is catch the thing. How would he know? Every once in a while, we will come across stories of cats being abandoned by owners who didn't want them anymore or couldn't take care of them anymore. The cats whose stories we find are generally cats who have been found and rescued, but we're sure there are many more stories like these that we don't hear because the cats are not found. So, every time we cover a story like this one, we make sure to remind people - to educate them - that there are better options than throwing your cat out onto the street, one of them being bringing your cat to a shelter.

Shelters are sacred places in the cat community. They take in cats in need of help and give them what they need until they get forever homes. Or at least that is what we thought. Today's story has, unfortunately, shown us otherwise. The abandoned kitten in today's story was one who was already rescued once before. A couple found her on the streets, decided, for whatever reason, that they couldn't adopt her, and did the right thing - bringing her to a shelter.

Except that this shelter apparently has a time limit on the stay of the kittens there. When the kitten was found and rescued again, she was 6 months old and had been on the streets for at least 3 weeks. The shelter didn't have her for long. It was lucky that she was found again, and most likely, it was even bigger luck that this person went ahead and found this kitten a real foster, one that will wait for the right person to adopt her, rather than bringing her back into the shelter that dumped her for a second time.

Oftentimes the stories we hear from the CDS, while magical in their own right, are not all too different from being lucky and finding a cat in a box by the roadside. But in this tale the cat literally jumped on his chosen hooman's roof and sang the song of his people until the hooman came out to help him off the roof. Spending 18 years with your cat is an amazing feat. It's something that we wish we could have with our cats. I look at my little fluffball, 11 years old, and I pray every day that she lives so many more years. Move over Mufasa, Scar, and Simba - there's a new legendary lion(ess) in town, and her name is Josie.

We've all heard it before, probably for the first time in your 8th-grade biology class: "survival of the fittest". Only the strongest survive; mercy for none. By all accounts, Josie should not have lived to be 17-years-old, which is far longer than the average lifespan of a generic lioness. At the age of 12, she started going blind and her body started to slow down. Her pride, valuing the survival of the group over the individual, left her behind.

But not everyone left. Her daughters, Dawn and Duffy, stayed with her.

Thanks to a viral post on X from @Rainmaker1973, we learned that Josie's daughters protected her from scavengers or a bold predator hoping to take down an easy catch, they made sure she always ate first, and helped direct her through rough terrain with soft calls.

These three legendary lionesses made history in Addo Elephant National Park, and will not soon be forgotten. Their story of feline family, survival, and determination to survive is one that we can all look at and collectively say, "Wow."

Some cats wake up ready to seize the day. Lazy cats would prefer the day stop making so much noise while they're trying to sleep.

These felines have perfected the art of doing as little as pawsible. Getting off the couch is a major commitment, walking across the room requires careful consideration, and anything more than a paw's reach away might as well be in another country. Why waste precious energy retrieving something when a perfectly capable hooman is standing right there?

Their schedules are packed, too. Breakfast at eight, nap at eight-oh-five, move three feet into a sunbeam around eleven, nap again, scream for lunch, and recover from lunch with another nap. Somewhere around four, they may find the strength to stare out the window or knock one object off a table. After a day that demanding, dinner better be served on time.

Movement is kept to an absolute minimum whenever pawsible. If the water bowl is too far away, they'll simply wait until thirst becomes a future problem. A toy rolls six inches out of reach? That toy belongs to the floor now. Even turning over during a nap can look like a major physical undertaking, complete with a dramatic stretch and several minutes of recovery afterward. These cats aren't wasting a single ounce of energy unless treats are involved, and even then, delivery is preferred.

Playtime has limits too. Wave the toy closer. No, closer. Still too far. Practically place it between their paws and maybe they'll give it one lazy swat before deciding they've done enough cardio for the week.

Somehow, after sleeping most of the day, these cats still look exhausted. It's almost impressive.

Maybe they'll accomplish something tomorrow. Maybe they'll move to the other side of the couch. Either way, another nap comes first.

When mysterious meows started coming from a parked car, one couple quickly realized their morning plans were about to change.

One rescuer was heading out for the day when desperate little cries stopped him in his tracks. After following the sound around the bottom of his building, he traced it to the front hood of a parked car. Hiding near the engine was a scared kitten who had somehow found his way into one of the last places anyone would want a little feline hanging out.

Getting him out was another story. The kitten had no intention of leaving his hiding place just because two concerned hoomans asked nicely. The rescuer and his girlfriend brought over food and water, settled down beside the stranger's car, and waited. And waited. Hours passed while they sat on the ground trying to convince their unexpected neighbor that coming out was a much better option than remaining under the hood.

Eventually, all that patience paid off. The kitten ventured far enough out for the couple to grab him and finally get him somewhere safe. After spending who knows how long tucked beside an engine, the little survivor could eat, drink, and relax without any cars starting up around him.

His rescuers are now searching for a possible owner and plan to get him checked out by a vet once the weather cools down. There's still a chance someone nearby is missing their adventurous little guy, so they aren't declaring him theirs quite yet.

If nobody comes forward, though, the CDS may have already handled that part. Spending hours beside a stranger's car to save one kitten sounds suspiciously like the beginning of a new cat pawrent origin story.

Next time, CDS, a cardboard box on the porch will do just fine.

I'm starting to understand why kittens sprint across the room out of the blue. Just like us, they remember the thing they were supposed to do on Monday that they didn't. We're in the middle of the week now, and they haven't done it yet, so they're panicking and running. I wish we could react the same way.

The main difference is that kittens can crash into a cardboard box, take a nap, and keep on with their day as if nothing happened. Humans have to face the consequences of postponing things that were meant to be done by Monday. At least you owe an explanation. That's the bare minimum, and the best-case scenario when forgetting about an important task.

This week's delivery includes sleepy kittens that use sleep as their coping mechanism. It doesn't matter if they forgot to do some serious kitten business; they run, panic, and fall asleep in a position that can't possibly be comfortable, pretending that nothing happened. After creating trouble, their way to solve it is to sleep and forget about the problem too. I mean… That's not the best advice ever, but sometimes it works for cats. Instead, we humans know that sleeping to avoid life problems is not the solution to anything. Even if we try to ignore our problems for a while, they are still there, so we need to take action sooner or later. Acting like the problem is not there won't make it disappear. In fact, it can make it grow bigger, which is potentially worse, and I don't think anyone wants that.

So, no, we can't sleep and just forget about it. We are not as privileged as a tiny kitten. They are still babies growing up and still figuring out how everything works in the world, so they deserve to live in their innocence and be taken care of. When we are kids, someone takes care of us too. Later, that's a benefit we lose when we become adults. I'm sorry; adult life is like this. But at least we can laugh at kitten memes! One of our greatest fears, as cat owners, is our cat crossing the rainbow bridge. It's something that we know will happen one day, and we knew it back when we adopted our cats too. It's inevitable. One day, it will happen. And that's awful. It just is. But at the ned of the day, we know that this is how things are supposed to be. Because the one thing that is worse than us losing our cats is our cats losing their owners. They might be this itty bitty part of our giant and complicated lives, but for them, we are everything.

Our fully-indoor cats, who we have been with since they were kittens, don't know life without us. They don't know life without blankets and free food to scream for at six in the morning. If I were to put my cat out onto the streets, she wouldn't survive half a day without rushing back to me. And the same is true for Fida, whose story was shared online as a tribute after she crossed the rainbow bridge.

Fida's life was long and comfortable, but at 17 years of age, her owner passed. The worst thing that can happen, right? Almost. Despite the fact that her previous owner had family - people Fida knew who could take her with them - they all decided that she was a "burden", that she wasn't worth the effort, and they tossed this elderly cat onto the street. We're sure that she would have tried to come back home if she could, but she had no home to go back to. It was a miracle that Fida was found when she was. There are very few things cuter than a baby kitten meowing and looking fluffy.

If we are feeling like we have an empty nest, we might also have the wish to bring another cat, one to whom we can give all the residual love that our older cats refuse to accept from us. That way, everyone is happy! Our older cats can keep their independence without having us all over them the entire day; we get an outlet for our pet-love, and a baby finds a new home. It's a win-win type of situation.

In some cases, the older cats might feel a bit more territorial. In those cases, we have to find a way to make them understand that they are not being replaced and that they need to be good to their younger siblings. When you think about it, cats are an awful lot like toddlers… Some of us might not have human children, but we sure are raising kids in our own way!

She thought a neighborhood stray needed her help, but a few weeks later, she would need him just as much.

This fluffy white feline had been wandering around the neighborhood for a while, but his future pawrent never thought much of it. He was so pretty and well-kept from a distance that she figured he probably had a home nearby and was simply enjoying some outdoor adventures. Then one day, he planted himself on her back porch for hours and gave her the chance to get a better look at him.

Up close, it became pretty clear that this handsome boy could use some help. She decided to try getting him into a kennel, fully expecting him to reject that idea immediately. Apparently, she underestimated the persuasive powers of tuna. One tasty bribe later, he walked right in and was off to the vet. Somewhere between scooping him up and getting him checked out, the idea of sending him back outside went out the window. This boy had found his home.

Then, only a few weeks after he arrived, his new pawrent unexpectedly lost her dad.

Later, she came across the belief that white cats can be viewed as spiritual messengers, arriving to offer protection and healing. For an animal to be abandoned is a terrible thing. They don't just love us, which they do, they also need us. They don't know life without us - without our love, our attention, our blankets and our food. These animals, who've spent their whole lives with us, believe that we have only good intentions, that we only want what is best for them. For dogs, this is especially true. Dogs who love humans tend to love all humans, so for their humans to break their trust means that their trust in all humans suffers. And the dog in today's video… we can't blame her for losing faith.

For no reason, this dog was abandoned. And not only was she abandoned, but she was brought in by her humans to be euthanized. We repeat - for no reason. She was healthy and sweet. And she was lucky too. Because an hour before the procedure is when she was found by the couple in today's video. A single hour later, and they would have been too late.

Her humans saved her just in time, but that doesn't mean that she was any less mistrustful of humanity. Fair. It took her a year to learn to fully trust her humans, but eventually, she did. She opened up. She showed that she was ready to be loved and spoiled properly again. And once she was calm, this wonderful family started fostering kittens again.

Of course, they were hesitant for a moment. They wouldn't know how their sensitive dog would react to something like this, but she was amazing. She surprised everyone, treating each and every one of these baby kittens as if they were her own. She did for these kittens what her humans did for her. She treated them with patience; she gave them time, and she let them approach her. She became the best foster momma, giving these kittens the mom that they don't have, and getting unconditional love in return from them.

Loving a cat means doing what is best for the cat, even if that means giving it to someone else.

Truly being a cat person means being able to make the right decisions for them, even if they might disagree with them. It means putting your cat on a diet, even if your cat thinks it's the worst thing in the world. It means giving your cat medicine when they need it, even if they hate the taste and run from it. And it means making the most difficult decision - if you cannot provide your cat with its basic needs, then the best thing to do for it is to find someone else who can.

Of course, it's all easier said than done, but it can happen. Because some people are genuinely good. When Waddlekitty shared their story about the homeless woman who handed them a kitten, they admitted that they were surprised by it and didn't know what to do at first. That's alright though, we would have reacted the same way. It took a moment, but they realized what was happening. The homeless woman rescued the kitten, knowing that it wasn't a safe place for her to be, but she also knew that she didn't have the means of taking care of the kitten herself. So she approached the first person who looked like they might be able to take her - a person on a walk with their cat - and tried her luck in finding this kitten a home. Because that is what a real cat person does.
