General Motors Chairman and acting CEO Ed Whitacre Jr. said earlier today that the company plans on paying all of its $6.7 billion in government loans by the end of June. GM received a total of $52 billion in bailout money from the U.S. government – of that, $45.3 billion was converted into equity, giving the government a 61 percent share in the automaker.

Whitacre said that GM plans to make quarterly installments starting this month with a $1.2 billion payment. He said GM could pay the loan sooner but hasn’t decided on anything yet.

The Chairman and CEO also said that the company has no specific schedule for an IPO, which would be necessary for the government to get back the rest of its investment into the Detroit automaker.

Whitacre, as many of you know by now, took over as CEO on Dec.1 after Fritz Henderson resigned following differences with the board over the direction of GM.

General Motors announced yesterday that it will sell Beijing Automotive Industry Holdings Co. Ltd (BAIC) of certain Saab 9-3, current 9-5 and powertrain technology and tooling. It said that Saab will assist BAIC to integrate this technology into future vehicles produced by BAIC.

According to a report by Dagens Industri, BAIC paid $197 million to buy the intellectual property rights and equipments to make Saab’s 9-5 and 9-3 sedans as its own brand of vehicles.

“The purchase price is 1.4 billion crowns and the money was in Saab’s account already on Friday,” the paper cited a source saying.

The source said that the $197 million is enough to keep Saab running for three months. Saab said yesterday that it is still working with GM to find a buyer and Spyker is still in the lead as a likely owner.

Back in July of this year, Mercedes-Benz confirmed that it is working on an Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG with electric-drive, scheduled to debut in 2015. Well, it seems like things are going well for the electric SLS because according to AMG boss Volker Mornhinweg, the model could debut as early as 2013 (we know, it’s not that early).

Power for the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG eDrive comes from four-electric motors with a combined output of 392 kW (526-hp) and a maximum torque of 880 Nm (649 lb-ft). Each electric-motor is positioned near the wheels with a transmission on each end to transfer power to the wheels.

Mornhinweg says that his engineering team is confident that the SLS AMG eDrive will meet all of its performance objectives including a 0-60 mph time of 4 seconds with a battery range of 110 miles.

“We are on target to meet all of our objectives but we obviously have lots of time to fine tune,” said Mornhinweg.

Audi has plans to offer 1,000 units of its e-tron concept in 2012.

Remember Maybach? Yes, it’s that brand that competes with other uber-luxury vehicles like Rolls-Royce and Bentley. It’s the brand made by Mercedes-Benz and only has like two or three models – okay enough with the sarcasm.

Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche has admitted that the Maybach sedan will go in for a long overdue facelift for next year. However, he refused to confirm whether Daimler was planning a next-generation model or whether Maybach will be axed off Daimler’s lineup altogether.

“The contribution of Maybach is not significant or relevant but there are only two players in this market and we are one of them. But there are no plans in the long run,” he told AutoCar.

Zetsche pointed out that he thinks luxury shoppers are changing their behavior towards more ”discreet and subtle luxury”.

The 2010 Kia Forte Koup is currently offered in two different trim-levels including the EX and SX. The Forte Koup EX is powered by a 156-hp 2.0L 4-cylinder, while the SX is powered by a 173-hp 2.4L 4-cylinder. Now what if you added a turbocharger to either or – you’d have a really fun Korean Koup or coupe, or whatever you want to call it.

According to Tom Loveless, vice president of sales for Kia Motors America, a turbocharged engine may find its way under the hood of the 2012 Kia Forte Koup.

In an Automotive News article about Kia adding Saturn dealerships to its network on the East Coast, Tom Loveless briefly mentions turbocharging “is a natural extension if it makes financial sense.”

The folks over at Edmunds are guessing that the engine may be the same turbocharged 2.0L 4-cylinder scheduled for the Hyundai Sonata in the 2012 model year. In the Sonata, that engine will produce upwards of 250-hp while returning 35 mpg on the highway.

Sounds like fun.

9ff’s 973-hp GT9 seemed like a very fast supercar in our eyes. The extremely modified and aggressive looking 9ff GT9 went from 0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds with a top speed of 254 mph – faster than the Bugatti Veyron’s 248 mph. Well, 9ff wasn’t satisfied.

In comes the 9ff GT9-R, and that extra ‘R’ at the end adds a neck-snapping output rating of 1,120-hp with a maximum torque of 774.4 lb-ft. That allows the 9ff GT9-R to go from 0-62 mph in 2.9 seconds with a top speed of 257 mph – that’s enough to top the record set by the SSC Ultimate Aero TT.

It seems like 9ff engineers can now sleep in peace – well, once they’ve finished producing the limited 20 units that will go on sale for the very elite and when they’ve made their 257 mph claim official.

FoMoCo told its employees late last week that it plans to reinstate raises, 401(k) matching and tuition assistance in 2010. The move shows a sign that the company’s reorganization plan is moving forward successfully.

“Clearly our One Ford transformation is not complete, but our plan is working,” Mark Fields, Ford’s president of the Americas said in an e-mail to employees.

Fields said that Ford has plans to:

• Reinstate 401(k) matches starting Jan. 1, for up to 5% of base pay.
• Reinstate salaried tuition assistance for classes on or after March 1.
• Funding approved for merit increases, but no details were provided.

Ford got rid of merit pay and other employee benefits in 2006 in order to cut cost. During the time where the company posted a $12.6 billion loss, Ford slashed costs by closing plants, slashing employment, suspending merit pay increases, ending the 401(k) contributions and tuition reimbursement.

Nonetheless, this is a positive sign the Mulally’s turnaround plan is working.

The all new E-Class Cabriolet is the latest addition to the successful Mercedes-Benz E-Class line-up. The open-top two-door model, which goes on sale in May 2010, features a classic fabric soft top, making for a stylistically pure cabriolet feeling. Viewed from the side, the new model is an intriguing proposition – with its clear proportions and a flawless cabriolet silhouette.

In keeping with the motto “four seasons, four personalities”, all-year-round suitability was right at the top of the developers’ list of priorities. With the new E-Class Cabriolet, the cabriolet season lasts the whole year because, while many cabriolets tend to disappear from the roads in the Fall, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet (length/width/height: 185.0/70.3/55.2in.) provides driving pleasure and comfort whether the roof is open or closed.

New features include:
– The AIRCAP® automatic draft-stop: always on board and easily controllable at the push of a button, it reduces turbulence substantially for all four seat occupants
- The modified AIRSCARF® neck-level heating system
- The sound-dampening soft top fitted as standard

The soft top can be opened and closed fully automatically within 20 seconds – even when driving at speeds of up to 25mph. The cabriolet roof is stowed in a special compartment behind the rear panel. A retractable cover separates the soft top compartment from the trunk area; it must be closed in order to close the soft top. If the roof is to remain closed, the cover can be slid rearwards, in which case the trunk capacity is increased by 3.17 cu. ft. to 13.8 cu. ft. A through-loading feature is included as standard for the new Cabriolet, as is EASY-ENTRY – a manually operated entry and exit aid for the rear passengers.

The power plants for the new E-Class Cabriolet are equally innovative: the engines combine efficiency with effortlessly superior power delivery. The exemplary, low fuel consumption has been achieved because of a number of practical measures. These include on-demand activation of the steering and fuel pumps, the use of tires with low rolling resistance and an alternator control system which takes account of the current driving situation and the vehicle’s electrical power requirements, plus the crucial factor of outstanding aerodynamics. The Cabriolet’s cd figure of 0.28 is the best in its class, marking a continuation of the E-Class success story in the field of aerodynamics.

Less turbulence, easier to use: AIRCAP® is a world-first

In 1989, Mercedes-Benz introduced a world premiere in the shape of a draught-stop for the SL model series, followed in 2004 by the AIRSCARF® neck-level heating system to further enhance comfort in open-top models. Now comes another world-first: the AIRCAP® automatic draft-stop, which can be activated at the push of a button, greatly reduces turbulence in the interior of the new Mercedes E-Class Cabriolet, creating a sea of warm air. It is also much easier to implement and use than conventional draft-stops: there is no tricky installation, the two individual rear seats remain free and the Cabriolet’s flowing side lines remain uninterrupted. AIRCAP® is therefore a classic Mercedes innovation: functional, comfort-enhancing, elegant and safe.

AIRCAP® consists of two components: a wind deflector that can be extended by around 2.4 inches with a net in the windscreen frame and a draft-stop
between the rear seats.

The functions of the two components:
– Elevation of the free flow above the interior
- Net at the front increases the basic pressure in the interior
- Draft-stop at the rear reduces the backflow

As well as enhancing occupant comfort and wellbeing, the reduction in draft when AIRCAP® is activated (it can be activated at speeds of up to 100 mph and remains in use right up to the car’s top speed) reduces the interior noise level – so passengers in all seats find it far easier to communicate.

When the standard AIRCAP® is combined with the optional AIRSCARF®, the system functions like an invisible scarf warming the occupants’ head and neck areas. AIRSCARF® is integrated into the backrests of the front seats and provides warm air through outlets in the head restraints.

Mercedes engineers have modified this unique innovation specifically for the E-Class Cabriolet: in this model, an adjustment wheel pivots the outlet nozzle upwards and downwards by a total of 36 degrees over and above the head restraint height adjustment, meaning that the driver and front passenger can enjoy the unique neck-level heating regardless of how short or tall they are.

Quiet, warm and windproof: sound-dampening soft top fitted as standard

Thanks to its sound-dampening soft top, fitted as standard, even the closed E-Class Cabriolet has one of the quietest interiors in the segment for four-seater premium cabriolets with a fabric roof. The soft top’s exceptionally high-quality insulation brings about a clearly noticeable reduction in the interior noise level compared to conventional fabric soft tops. Exterior noise caused by other vehicles and wind noise are therefore absorbed more effectively.

On the road, the difference is audible from speeds of just 50 mph, for example when driving through a tunnel or overtaking a convoy of trucks. At higher speeds, the benefits of the acoustic soft top are even more tangible. For instance, it is possible to have a perfectly normal phone conversation in hands-free mode even when travelling at a speed more than 125 mph.

The soft top is of course waterproof and windproof. Plus it can be put through an automatic carwash without any hesitation. With a total thickness of .9 inches, the fabric soft top offers excellent thermal insulation, meaning that the E-Class Cabriolet is also ideal for use in winter.

Safety: robust structure, anticipatory protection and windowbags

The new Cabriolet offers the wealth of safety innovations one would expect from a Mercedes-Benz model. Highlights of the open-top two-door model include roll-over protection, the A-pillars reinforced by two additional tubes and the plug-in B-pillars. This new model is also the first Mercedes cabriolet to feature headbags.

The roll-over protection consists of two robust bars, each with a diameter of 1.4 inches, which are housed in the rear head restraints in modules behind the rear seat backrests. A tilting cone sensor detects imminent danger to the occupants based on extreme skidding movements or acceleration caused by impact. If this sensor then sends a corresponding signal, pre-tensioned pressure springs are activated by pyrotechnic means, i.e. extremely quickly.

Consequently, both roll-over bars in the rear head restraints are extended. They reach their highest point and are locked automatically within a fraction of a second. In combination with the robust A-pillars, each of which is reinforced with two high-strength steel tubes, the steel bars provide highly effective roll-over
protection.

The plug-in B-pillars are extremely robustly connected as they engage in the side skirts, thus offering highly effective protection in the event of a crash. A shoe made from ultra-high-strength steel braces the inside of the B-pillar against the rear seat crossmember.

With seven airbags fitted as standard, belt tensioners and belt force limiters for all seats, not to mention crash-responsive head restraints for the driver and front passenger, the new E-Class Cabriolet offers the most extensive safety equipment package in this vehicle category. The airbags, which can deploy in milliseconds in the event of an accident, include front airbags and sidebags for the driver and front passenger, a kneebag on the driver’s side, and headbags. The latter, which appear in a Mercedes cabriolet for the first time, are housed in the door panelling in the beltline area. Covering a wide area – around 2.3 × 1.6 feet with a volume of 17 liters when deployed – the airbags provide extremely effective protection for occupants large and small in the event of a crash. The three-part side protection system – comprising headbag and thoraxbag – optimises the level of protection afforded to individual parts of the body. Rear sidebags are available as an option.

Further exemplary safety equipment available for the E-Class Cabriolet includes ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness detection, PRE-SAFE® anticipatory occupant protection, Adaptive Highbeam Assist, and DISTRONIC PLUS proximity control.

FoMoCo’s Chairman Bill Ford Jr. met with President Barack Obama today during his visit to Washington to deliver an action list from the National Summit on the economy from June. Ford said that he thanked Obama for stepping in to save General Motors and Chrysler from liquidation.

He said that said Obama had stabilized not just GM and Chrysler but auto suppliers as well.

“He was obviously interested in how the industry was going and I complimented him on how he handled the industry,” Ford said.

He said that his meeting with the President lasted less than 15 minutes – not that that really matters.

World Speed Record Holder Russ Wicks and his company Kepler Motors announced today that they will unveil their MOTION supercar at the 2009 Dubai International Motor Show later this week.

The all-wheel-drive Kepler Motors MOTION is powered by a modified version of Ford’s 3.5L V6 twin-turbo engine that produces 500-hp. A 250-hp electric-motor drives the front wheels of the car. 0 to 60 mph comes in just under 2.5 seconds with a top speed of over 200 mph.

Kepler says that only 50 units of the MOTION will be produced and we’re guessing that means that the supercar will be sold at a premium price. Production and deliveries are scheduled to start in 2011.

Fisker Automotive announced today that the Crown Prince of Denmark, HRH Frederik, will travel to the COP15 UN Climate Conference events in Copenhagen in the Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid car.

“HRH Frederik will visit at 4 pm Hopenhagen event at Raadhuspladsen after which he will leave in the Fisker Karma at 5 pm to the Bella Center,” Fisker said.

Refresher: Power comes from Fisker’s Q-DRIVE system, which is made up of two 201-hp electric motors that are powered by a lithium-ion battery pack. We know that General Motors is really looking forward to see the Chevrolet Volt sell well and it seems like that the Detroit automaker will do anything to get the units moving when it goes on sale next year in California.

In the latest marketing stunt for the Volt, GM put together a little happy song called “Chevy Volt and Me” – together with a whole dance routine including some break dancing. The whole disaster segment was performed at the 2009 LA Auto Show.

Whitacre – whoever thought this was a good idea needs to be fired next.

Volvo announced today that its 2011 Volvo C30 T5 and C30 T5 R-Design will carry a price-tag of $24,600 and $26,950 respectively. Volvo announces pricing for the new 2011 C30 T5 and C30 T5 R-Design

Rockleigh, NJ (December 11, 2009) – Volvo Cars of North America, LLC (VCNA) announced pricing today of its exciting C30 T5 and C30 T5 R-Design. The C30 T5 has a MSRP of just $24,600* while the sporty C50 T5 R-Design starts at just $26,950*. Both cars come standard with a powerful turbocharged 227 horsepower inline 5-cylinder engine and a 6-speed manual transmission.

The new Volvo C30 T5 and C30 T5 R-Design see significant changes for the 2011 model year. The entire front clip has been redesigned, including the soft nose, front fenders, grille, headlights and lower front spoiler. This gives the car a radical new appearance from the front, carving out a distinctive personality which clearly separates the new C30 from the Volvo S40 and V50.

Following on the heels of the dynamically styled XC60 premium crossover, the 2011 C30 incorporates a large Volvo iron mark. The air intake has also grown in size and resembles the intake in the XC60. The grille has a new pattern used exclusively on both C30 variants.

Although the biggest design changes have taken place at the front, the rear also sports the same deep new lines and detailing. The contours are more dramatic than before. The black plastic panels have been replaced with more body color lower down, in the same or a contrasting color, to forge a closer visual contact between the car and the road surface.

C30 T5 R-Design – Taking it to the next level

The biggest changes in the new Volvo C30 T5 R-Design are actually hidden beneath the skin. While the car’s extroverted body kit and design cues are easy to see, it is the chassis and the steering that have been the main focus of attention. The aim is to create a sporty driving experience and a sophisticated feeling of comfort.

The R-Design chassis has been modified in several areas. Stiffer bushings allow for more precise steering. The steering ratio is lower, giving 10 percent faster response to driver input. Spring stiffness has been increased by 30 percent in order to better maintain the C30 T5 R-Design’s poise during enthusiastic driving. The mono-tube dampers are stiffer and build up pressure much more quickly. The roll stabilizers are stiffer to reduce any leaning tendency when taking corners.

The new sport chassis has made the C30 R-Design a better-balanced and more agile car. Road contact is more distinct and feedback from the wheels is faster and clearer, promoting a more alert feeling while driving.

The most noticeable design change is an all-new body kit featuring a redesigned front and rear. The body kit is monochromatic, giving a visual impression that the car has been lowered by much more than the actual 10 mm reduction in ride height. The new C30 R-Design is also equipped with 18-inch “Midir” diamond cut alloy wheels, just like the rest of the R-Design range. The interior is now available with dramatic new black upholstery as an alternative.

General Motors announced today that it has teamed up with Autonet Mobile to provide Wi-Fi capabilities for Chevrolet vehicles. The new dealer installed feature allows full Internet access inside and up to a 150 feet radius around the vehicle.

“Chevrolet Wi-Fi by Autonet Mobile enhances commuting, family vacations and work,” says Chris Rauser, Chevrolet Accessories Manager. “It benefits active families on the go, as well as professionals who need immediate information at remote job sites. Its uses are almost endless.”

Even though the Honda Element has been a disappointing seller, Honda plans on going forward with a second-generation of its crazy crossover rather than phasing it out. According to John Mendel, American Honda Motor Co. executive vice president, Honda is hitting a key demographic with the Element that it can’t with the SUV’s platform sibling, the CR-V.

“Our specialty vehicles give a little spice to the brand,” Mendel said. “It’s all about platform usability. And the Element is part of that strategy. In the showroom you couldn’t get most Element buyers to even sit in a CR-V.”

He said that Element shoppers like the flexibility of the vehicle’s storage capacity.

Honda is now working to produce another oddly shaped vehicle from the CR-V’s underpinnings to replace the Element.

During its first year, Honda had a target to sell 75,000 units and ended up selling 67,478. After that, the Element never managed to break 60,000. The company sold just 26,447 last year, and 13,458 units in 2009.

I have personally stopped texting while driving after Omar (our Editor in Chief) gave me a huge lecture and took my phone and put it in the trunk during a trip to NYC one night. It is very (can’t emphasize the very anymore) dangerous and we don’t recommend it at all – even if it’s an important business e-mail or your girlfriend is breaking up with you.

Audi announced today that it will debut its 2011 A1 subcompact at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show.

“The Audi brand represents a unique passion for cars. A small, bold idea can turn into something big,” says Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG. “This is the case with the Audi A1. Its mission is clear: to condense all of Audi’s virtues into a car that is less than four meters long.”

“Our goal with the A1 is a bold one: to repeat the success that we have enjoyed with the A3 in the compact segment, Stadler said. “With the A1 we’re opening another door into the world of premium cars.”

According to senior sources at the company, Mercedes-Benz is stuck between the choice of three of four-cylinder units for its next-generation of downsized engines. While BMW has already confirmed that it will offer a 3-cylinder engine for the next-generation 3-series, Mercedes-Benz executives are a bit hesitant to follow due to the extra cost and complexity involved.

Sources told AutoCar that using a 3-cylinder engine ”was relatively expensive to optimise”. The process will involve Mercedes-Benz addressing other measures including the reduction of noise, vibration and harshness.

The new engines will be used in both the next-generation A-Class, B-class and the C-class range.

Other sources say that it would be cheaper for Mercedes-Benz to look for a partner who could supply a more conventional 4-cylinder unit, which the company could add its own direct injection and turbocharging technology to.

While GM has yet to release any official pricing details for the 2011 Chevrolet Volt, it is widely known that GM’s new electric plug-in vehicle will cost $40,000 or about $32,500 after a $7,500 federal tax credit. In an attempt to get consumers to pay that much for a Chevy, GM is packing the Volt with new tech features to give it a more upmarket appeal.

One recently seen feature is an app for BlackBerry and iPhones that will allow Volt owners to communicate with an onboard computer to access information about their vehicle. Sources say that the application will be released very soon.

We’re guessing the app will let you know such things as the vehicle’s charging status, if there are any charging stations nearby and other critical information.

Porsche announced today that after just three months of going on sale, the Stuttgart automaker has produced the 10,000 unit of its new Panamera sedan at its Leipzig plant. The 10,000 Panamera was a 500-hp Turbo model and will be delivered to a customer in Singapore.

““Sales of the Panamera have really taken off: we have already secured over 9,000 orders,” said Michael Macht, Chairman of the Board of Porsche AG. “Shortly after it was launched our Gran Turismo won the coveted “Goldenes Lenkrad” [“Golden steering wheel”] and “Auto Trophy” awards in Germany. It has also won many international prizes.”

The Panamera 4S is proving particularly popular and has a share of 44 percent – putting it ahead of the Panamera Turbo (36 percent) and the Panamera S (20 percent).

Porsche says it plans to build 20,000 Panamera units per year across the whole product cycle.

The UK’s favorite hybrid, Toyota Prius, has been named Top Gear Magazine’s 2009 City Car of the Year. The new 2010 Toyota Prius has been in very high demand in the UK, attracting more than 4,000 customer orders since going on sale in August.

“You have to admire the Prius. It’s a testament to Toyota that it has refined this car over three generations to arrive at something quite ground-breaking,” said Conor McNicholas, BBC Top Gear Editor.

“Thanks to its full hybrid technology, Prius is ideal for slow moving city traffic,” Top Gear said in a press release. “It has the ability to run purely on electric power for certain distances, reducing both fuel consumption and tailpipe CO2 emissions to zero. There is perhaps no better place to put that performance into practice than in the heart of London, where Prius remains exempt from the congestion charge.”

Ferrari’s Special Projects has unveiled their second one-off model known as the Ferrari P540 Superfast Aperta. Built for an American client, this special one-off Ferrari is based on the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano and was inspired by a Carrozzeria Fantuzzi-designed Ferrari built specifically for the 1968 Fellini film, Toby Dammit.

The client, known as Edward Walson, son of John Walson, the inventor of cable TV, asked Ferrari last year to make him a modern reinterpretation of the gold-colored car in the movie.

“I had always dreamed of designing sports cars,” Walson said, “and when I saw this film the decision came of its own accord: one day I would have ‘my’ Ferrari.”

The Ferrari P540 Superfast Aperta was designed by Pininfarina and built in Maranello, and Walson was directly involved in each stage of its development. From the initial sketches to the final vehicle, the car took a total of 14 months to build.

Mercedes-Benz is apparently getting ready to show off how its future vehicles will look with a concept that hints at its upcoming design direction. The concept is scheduled to make its debut at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show next month.

“We want to elevate our design towards art and if any company can do it Mercedes can,” design boss Gordon Wagener told AutoCar.

While Wagener wouldn’t give out any details about the concept, he said that it was a ”pure design concept which is long and exaggerated” and not to expect any production models based on the study. However, rumors say that the concept will show strong hints to the next CLS, which will debut at the end of 2010.

General Motors Company announced today that Ray Young has been named vice president of International Operations and will report to Tim Lee, president of GM International Operations, effective February 1, 2010. GM said that Young will remain Chief Financial Officer of General Motors until a replacement is named.

In his new role, Young, 47, will lead the International Operations Finance organization, in addition to other international operating responsibilities that will be further clarified in the near term.

“Ray has been instrumental in leading the company through an extraordinarily complex bankruptcy and subsequent actions taken to reshape GM’s business,” said Chairman and CEO, Edward E. Whitacre. “Looking ahead at the needs of our business, it has become clear that Ray’s vast global experience and financial expertise will be essential in managing the challenges and dynamics of growing our international business,”

GM has been looking for Young’s replacement since earlier this summer.

Saab announced today that it had closed a deal with Beijing Automotive Industry Holdings Co. Ltd (BAIC) of certain Saab 9-3, current 9-5 and powertrain technology and tooling. Saab will assist BAIC to integrate this technology into future BAIC vehicles.

“This arrangement is excellent for both parties, now and for the future,” said Jan Åke Jonsson, Managing Director of Saab. “We have developed a good relationship with BAIC and look forward to working with them to integrate this Saab technology into their future vehicles.”

Saab said that the deal to sell some of its key assets to BAIC will help secure the money-losing GM brand’s future. Spokeswoman Gunilla Gustavs said Saab and GM are working hard to find a buyer, reports Automotive News.

Spyker Cars is still in negotiations to buy Saab, which GM wants to sell before the end of the year.

Toyota’s Executive Vice President Takeshi Uchiyamada says that Toyota will start selling plug-in hybrid vehicles to consumers in 2011 at an affordable price. Uchiyamada made the comments while showing the Prius plug-in hybrid prototype.

Later this month, a total of 350 vehicles will be delivered in Japan and Europe in support of model programs with business and government partners. Early next year, 150 units will start arriving in the U.S., where they will be placed in regional clusters with select partners for market/consumer analysis and technical demonstration.

“When fully charged, the vehicle is targeted to achieve a maximum electric-only range of approximately 13 miles and will be capable of achieving highway speeds up to 60 mph in electric-only mode,” Toyota says. “For longer distances, the Prius PHV reverts to “hybrid mode” and operates like a regular Prius.”

The battery powering the Prius PHV is the first lithium-ion drive-battery developed by Toyota and its joint venture battery production company, Panasonic Electric Vehicle Energy (PEVE). In early November, PEVE began producing more than 500 lithium batteries on a dedicated assembly line at the company’s Teiho production facility in Japan.

Power and Associates 2009 Customer Retention Study, resale value and vehicle quality are amongst the most important factors for new-vehicle shoppers to stick with their automotive brand.

The study found that the resale value of the vehicle as a reason for owner loyalty has increase by 12 percent while the importance of vehicle quality has increased by 6 percent.

In 2009, Mercedes-Benz ranked the highest in retaining vehicle owners when they go shopping for a new-vehicle. The German automakers retention rate improved by 8 percent from 2008. Honda came in second with 64 percent while Toyota came in third with 61 percent. Lexus and Subaru closed the top 5 both coming in with 57 percent.

Importance of Resale Value and Vehicle Quality Increase Considerably as Reasons for Owner Loyalty

Mercedes-Benz Ranks Highest in Owner Retention

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif.: 10 December 2009 -Resale value and vehicle quality have become increasingly important reasons for new-vehicle buyers to remain loyal to an automotive brand, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Customer Retention StudySM released today.

Now in its seventh year, the study measures the percentage of vehicle owners and lessees who replace a previously purchased new vehicle with another from the same brand. Retaining existing owners is critical to a brand’s market success, particularly in the current challenging market conditions.

The study finds that the importance of resale value as a reason for owner loyalty has increased by 12 percentage points in 2009, compared with 2008. Meanwhile, the importance of vehicle quality has increased by 6 percentage points. In comparison, in 2008, the reasons with the largest increases in importance for staying loyal to a brand were safety, fuel economy and deals/incentives.

Resale value and quality have also increased in importance as reasons why brands conquest new customers from their competitors, as has the importance of appearance and styling.

“Although there are some signs of economic recovery, the outlook remains uncertain, so for many new-vehicle buyers, high resale value and quality are particularly important considerations that are driving purchase behavior,” said Raffi Festekjian, director of automotive product research at J.D. Power and Associates. “Whether manufacturers are striving to increase loyalty or conquesting buyers from other brands, offering attractively styled models and having strong customer perceptions of resale value and quality are critical.”

Mercedes-Benz ranks highest among automotive brands in retaining vehicle owners when they buy a new-vehicle, and improves their retention rate by eight percentage points from 2008 to 67 percent in 2009. Following in the rankings are Honda (64%) and Toyota (61%).

“Mercedes-Benz has steadily improved its customer retention rates during the past five years, and in 2009, has achieved the highest rate ever attained by a manufacturer since the inception of the study,” said Festekjian. “In particular, customers cite the resale value and appearance and styling of Mercedes-Benz models as primary reasons to remain loyal to the brand.”

Overall customer retention in 2009 has remained stable from 2008 at 48 percent. In 2009, 13 of the 36 ranked brands have improved in customer retention rates from 2008, while 20 have declined and three have remained stable. MINI and Porsche post the greatest improvements in customer retention rates from 2008, each improving by 14 percentage points in 2009. For MINI, this improvement is driven primarily by incentives and customer perceptions of resale value of the brand’s models. For Porsche, the increase is due to resale value, fuel economy and quality.

The 2009 Customer Retention Study is based on responses from 128,939 new-vehicle buyers and lessees, of which 74,610 replaced a vehicle that was previously acquired new. The study was fielded between February and May 2009 and August and October 2009.

In recent Ford owner clinics conducted with retailer Best Buy, more than 35 percent of SYNC users tagged hands-free phone usage as the most appealing feature of SYNC.

Customers talk, Ford listens
The Ford SYNC team actively engages SYNC users and asks for ways to further improve the system on the Owner to Owner community forum set up on the SYNC Web site (www.syncmyride.com). Recently, those chats inspired the idea for a phonebook download assistance application that would help customers with older cell phones or pay-as-you-go phones, who could only digit-dial a contact via voice (”Dial 1-800-392-3673″), rather than ask the SYNC system to call a person by name (”Call Mike Smith at home”).

The SYNC team shared their idea with Ford’s IT community, looking for a software-based solution that could bring all phones to a higher level of compatibility with SYNC. “Our IT team is taking a much larger and more upfront role in customer satisfaction as the amount of software in the vehicle continues to increase,” said Darren Shelcusky, supervisor of Vehicle Solutions with Ford’s Product Development Systems/Information Technology. “We are paying close attention to what our customers like and dislike; taking fast action to deliver the technology and features that they value.”

Contacts converge
Now available for free download on www.syncmyride.com, SYNCMyPhone gives users the ability to hop on their home computer or laptop, manually create and manage multiple address books and contact lists – from a cell phone, Outlook distribution list or other device – and upload the information to the SYNC system via their vehicle’s USB port.

Customers can enter from 1 to 2,000 different numbers and contacts to their SYNCMyPhone download. And they can also choose any combination of names and contacts, so while some may only want to enter the 20 people they call the most, others can choose to enter only their business contacts from their laptop or go for it all and throw on entire address books from multiple sources.

Through the SYNCMyPhone download, all the contacts that users can access hands-free in the SYNC-equipped vehicle don’t have to be entered on the paired phone – a painful data-entry exercise that everyone has endured after buying a new cell phone.

Testing the rules
While early customer engagement and beta testing of new vehicle designs and equipment isn’t a feasible or safe practice for automakers in most instances, SYNC is redefining that hard-and-fast rule for Ford.

“We could never provide customers with a new suspension or brake component and ask them to beta test it, but since SYNC is software-based, it opens up a whole new dimension in our ability to respond quickly to customer needs and engage them in early development,” said Shelcusky.

With SYNCMyPhone, Ford engineers worked with some 50 current SYNC users with phonebook download issues to help define, develop and tweak the application to get it just right.

The company-to-customer dialogue was massive. In total, more than 6,500 page views on the application were created on the SYNC owner forum during the beta testing and a soft launch that followed. In addition, the amount of feedback gathered in the less than two months the soft launch post was active is unmatched by any previous Ford SYNC announcement made on www.syncmyride.com.

As a result of this dialogue, several customer requests were baked into the final product, including the need for specific user defined import fields and the application’s compatibility with both PC and MAC operating systems.

At the 2010 Detroit Auto Show next month, BMW will expand its Z4 lineup with the addition of the BMW Z4 sDrive35is, the closest we’ll get to an M version of the Z4 for now.

Featuring increased air intake flow and increased boost pressure, the twin-turbocharged 3.0L 6-clyinder engine now produces a total of 335-hp with a maximum torque of 332 lb-ft. The BMW Z4 sDrive35is includes an electronically-controlled overboost function that briefly provides a torque of 369 lb-ft. Mated to a 7-speed Double-Clutch Transmission, the Z4 sDrive35is to go from 0-6o mph in 4.7 seconds with a top speed of 155 mph.

The BMW Z4 sDrive35is also includes new M Sport upgrades such as M Aerodynamics and adaptive M Suspension. Ride-height is reduced by 10 millimeters with electronically controlled shock absorbers (Dynamic Damping Control) to improve the handling. The M Sport package also adds aerodynamically optimized exterior touches and a customized interior along with 18-inch alloy wheels (19-inch light-alloy wheels are available as an option).

BMW’s Roadster Gets Higher-Performance Model for 2011

More air, boost, and torque: More BMW performance.

The latest Z4 model is characterized by instantaneous response to the accelerator pedal, fantastic sounds, and a free-revving spirit. The engine features increased air intake flow and increased boost pressure to release more power with the same standard of efficiency. The combination of twin low-mass turbochargers and High Precision direct injection offers an output a naturally-aspirated engine would only be able to provide through more cylinders and larger displacement.

The turbocharger system developed for the engine of the new BMW Z4 sDrive35is maintains a high output throughout the entire engine speed range. Nominal peak torque is increased to 332 lb-ft from 1,500 rpm to 4,500 rpm. Maximum output of 335 hp is delivered at 5,900 rpm.

Overboost function for athletic acceleration.

The enhanced engine management system of the BMW Z4 sDrive35is includes an electronically-controlled overboost function to briefly increase torque under full load by another 37 lb-ft. This temporary torque peak of 369 lb-ft gives the car a significant increase in acceleration. The BMW Z4 sDrive35is will complete the sprint from a standstill to 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds (preliminary). Top speed of the BMW Z4 sDrive35is is limited electronically to 250 km/h or 155 mph.

High Precision direct injection and BMW EfficientDynamics.

The BMW Z4 sDrive35is offers outstanding power and performance without an increase in fuel consumption or emissions. Its figures are expected to match those of the BMW Z4 sDrive35i with Double-Clutch Transmission on the EPA test cycle. This balance of performance and fuel efficiency results from the fundamental design and layout of the BMW inline-6, which combines twin turbochargers with High Precision direct injection. The fuel injectors operate at a pressure of up to 200 bar (2900 psi), distributing fuel in a conical spray pattern throughout the combustion chamber. Another advantage of direct fuel injection is its cooling effect which allows higher compression while reducing the possibility of detonation.

Further technologies offered under the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy include Brake Energy Regeneration, Electric Power Steering, and on-demand operation of engine accessory units.

Signature engine sound to accompany the surge of power.

The exhaust system of the BMW Z4 sDrive35is has been tuned specifically for this model. Acoustic engineering gives the car a very unique sound pattern across the speed range. This tuned sound is the result of special baffles and a unique set of mufflers. The sound is characterized by a deep rumble with a focus on the low frequency sound range.

Enhanced Electric Power Steering.

Electric Power Steering (EPS) on the BMW Z4 sDrive35is features very sporty programming, focused to provide intense and clear steering feedback to the driver. This enables the driver to turn-in with remarkable precision and confidence at all vehicle speeds.

7-speed Double-Clutch Transmission with special programming.

The standard 7-speed Double-Clutch Transmission (DCT) in the BMW Z4 sDrive35is combines the best in driving dynamics and efficiency. A highlight is the dual-mass flywheel, configured for the higher levels of power and performance. The DCT can shift gears without the slightest interruption of power to the rear tires, and offers a choice of automatic or manual gear selection. The programming of the DCT has been tailored to complement the sporty nature of the BMW Z4 sDrive35is at every level.

When shifting gears manually or within the SPORT and SPORT+ modes of the Z4’s standard Driving Dynamics Control, the transmission offers an exciting experience through faster gearshifts and a greater increase in torque before shifting. The DCT is controlled by an electronic gear selector on the center console and comes with gearshift paddles on the steering wheel.

M Sport upgrades to match the new engine’s performance.

German based tuner Brabus is all about power and breaking world-records. The company has just dropped its latest creation, the Brabus GLK V12, which sets a new speed record for a street-legal SUV.

Brabus threw in its BRABUS SV12 R Biturbo 750 engine in the GLK, helping it producing an eye-watering 750-hp with a peak torque of 995 lb-ft. That allows for a 0-62 mph time of 4.2 seconds with a top speed of 200.3 mph.

The new BRABUS SV12 R Biturbo 750 engine was implanted in the small engine bay of the GLK with meticulous precision. The engineers and technicians drew upon their experience and know-how gathered from the development and production of the special model BRABUS BULLIT, based on the latest Mercedes C-Class.

The displacement engine, lubricated exclusively with ARAL Synthetic motor oil, delivers 750 hp (740 bhp) / 552 kW at 5,500 rpm and produces a peak torque of 1,350 Nm (995 lb-ft) at 2,100 rpm, limited in the car electronically to 1,100 Nm (811 lb-ft).

The front apron of the BRABUS WIDESTAR version was developed in the wind tunnel. Its large air dams provide radiators and front brakes with ample cooling air. In combination with a carbon-fiber spoiler lip the front apron also minimizes aerodynamic lift on the front axle – a prerequisite for directional stability beyond 300 km/h (186 mph).

Favorable aerodynamic properties were also a top priority for the design of the BRABUS WIDESTAR fender flares on front and rear axle. They add five centimeters (two inches) to the width of the GLK. Custom-tailored rocker panels create a smooth transition between front and rear flares. The rocker panels feature LED lights in their undersides that are activated via the keyless remote or by pulling on a door handle. These lights illuminate the ground next to the SUV for safe entering and exiting the vehicle in the dark.

In the rear the BRABUS roof spoiler reduces aerodynamic lift and thus makes an important contribution to the excellent directional stability of the world’s fastest SUV. The rear appearance of the BRABUS GLK V12 is further characterized by the BRABUS rear apron with its centrally located reflector. Custom-tailored cutouts on the right and left side provide the perfect backdrop for the four characteristically shaped tailpipes of the BRABUS stainless-steel sport exhaust system.

The larger wheel houses of the record car provide space for BRABUS Monoblock wheels up to king-size wheels with a diameter of 22 inches. The size 10Jx22 wheels come in five different designs: GLK V12 customers can choose from the new BRABUS Monoblock G five-spoke forged wheels, three-piece Monoblock VI alloy wheels and one-piece Monoblock E, Q and S wheels. High-performance tires from BRABUS technology partners Pirelli and YOKOHAMA can be mounted up to size 285/25 ZR 22.

The BRABUS coilover sport suspension was developed specifically for the twelve-cylinder SUV. It is height-adjustable on front and rear axle and features ten selectable settings each for bound and rebound.

To handle the extreme performance the brakes were upgraded as well and trimmed for maximum stopping power and endurance. The BRABUS high-performance brakes system features 12-piston aluminum fixed calipers and vented and grooved steel discs measuring 380 x 37 millimeters (15 x 1.5 inches) on the front axle. The rear axle stops on six-piston aluminum fixed calipers and vented and grooved 360 x 28 millimeter (14.2 x 1.1 inches) discs.

The interior of the GLK V12 was also refined to reflect the exclusive character of this unique SUV: The GLK V12 comes with a BRABUS fully leather interior that can be further refined with Alcantara elements if desired. The interior appointments are rounded out with an ergonomically shaped sport steering wheel, a speedometer with 330-km/h (205-mph) scale and stainless-steel scuff plates with illuminated BRABUS WIDESTAR logo.

Further exclusive interior highlights are wood trim sets or carbon-fiber trim panels for dashboard, doors and center console in any color imaginable. Yesterday we told you that Nissan is considering bring back the 240SX as a competitor to Toyota’s upcoming FT-86 rear-wheel-drive sports car. According to AutoCar, Kia is also planning an entry-level rear-wheel-drive sports car based on the Kee Coupe Concept.

Sources say that the model will share its platform technology with the Hyundai Genesis Coupe. Kia’s design director Peter Schreyer told AutoCar that Kia is planning replacing and renewing its current lineup of core models.

However, don’t expect to see the Kee on the roads anytime soon.

“We are not like Audi or Porsche, Schreyer said. “We are not in a position to just create something and then announce to the market that it’s the perfect kind of sports car.” He said that the “Kia brand has to grow a little more in stature before the time will be right for Kee.

“Assuming Kia’s European fortunes continue to improve at the rate they are now, we could be ready in, say, five years for a car like Kee, Schreyer said. “We could spin it off the Cee’d or Magentis platform, but for me, it would be important for the Kee to be rear-wheel drive.”

Myers Motors has announced that it is taking orders for its new two-passenger model. Based on the company’s single-seater NmG model, the two-seater model features an advanced lithium-ion battery system that provides drivers with 60-miles on a full charge.

“This range covers over 80% of America’s daily driving habits, says Myers Motors. The company has plans to offer an option to upgrade the range to 100 miles.

“While people love our zippy single-passenger model, we know that sometimes you want to take a friend along for the ride – and soon you can.” said Dana Myers, Founder and President of Myers Motors. “Our goal is to make electric vehicles more affordable for average Americans.”

The base pricing of the car starts at $29,995, but if you throw in an estimated tax credit of $2,499.50, prices have the possibility to come down to $22,495.50. Myers anticipates production will begin in the 4th quarter of 2010.

Yes, it looks the same as last year’s model but Acura says that the 2010 MDX receives a significant number of enhancements for the new model year. Look a little closer and you’ll notice that the 2010 Acura MDX receives an upgraded front and rear body work with a new grille, revised tail lights and stainless-steel exhaust finishers.

Now is the time to go car-shopping; if you have the extra money laying that is. The recession has resulted in great value opportunities out there. Car sales are down across the board, and this creates a glut in the general supply. Used-vehicle registrations have decreased nationally over 7%, and new-car registrations are down a staggering 34.8%, according to Illinois consulting firm, Experian Automotive.

According to Experians comprehensive analysis of best and worst used-cars, the Honda CR-V and the Lexus ES are the two best used-car buys today, given their reliability and residual value. The two worst according to the same analysis, were the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Grand Caravan.

Also found to be favorable by the study are the Subaru Impreza (both the WRX and mainline versions), and for those who lead a less rugged lifestyle, the Toyota Prius, which retains 40% of its value after 5 years, while the typical car hold only 20%-25%.

BMW and Mini have entered into an agreement with Mercedes-Benz USA by which the latter will be responsible for the former two companies’ vehicles being imported through the port of Baltimore.

BMW and Mini will use the Mercedes-Benz vehicle preparation center to inspect, process, and repair their pre-delivered vehicles starting in March. President of BMW of North America, Jim O’Donnell said that he anticipates approximately 50,000 vehicles headed for the central region, to pas through Mercedes’ center, reports Automotive News.

Currently, the preparation is done at BMW’s factory in South Carolina, but that plant will no longer be practical once the new X3 starts to be built there next year.

Ernest Lieb, CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA has also lent mention to the possibility of the two companies doing business together in the future.

These claims of a quick charging time are based on the use of special ‘quick-chargers’, and not the standard wall plug. These chargers are definitely a hassle, as they must be professionally installed and and approved by building inspectors.

The real marketing liability from this issue lies with the general public, and not electric car owners. Most current electric car owners are enthusiasts, and quite frankly they are aware of the issues involved with electric vehicle production. Marketing execs are concerned that the perceived hassle of electric car ownership will deter potential buyers from becoming actual buyers.

Nissan and GM have been working with government agencies across the country to prepare them to deal with the devices so that once they come to market, consumers will have an easy time with their inspections and such.

They also have in the works, public infrastructure for electric cars, but admit that these systems are moor important for perception and ease of concerns than they are for actual use. Mark Perry, director of product planning for Nissan believes that 80% of charging is going to take place either at home or at work.

While General Motors’ executives are dropping like flies, two former Chrysler executives are getting back in the automotive game. According to Automotive News, Tom LaSorda and Steven Landry have both joined the board of ALTe, a startup supplier for hybrid vehicle powertrains.

“When I reviewed the business plan and conducted the due diligence personally, it was obvious ALTe had tremendous potential,” LaSorda said in the statement released today. He said he has invested money in ALTe and will be the board’s “lead director.”

LaSorda left Chrysler after it filed for bankruptcy protection and briefly advised Penske Automotive during the company’s bid to take over Saturn from General Motors.

ALTe, located in suburban Detroit, makes range-extended electric powertrain systems similar to the ones found in the Chevrolet Volt. ALTe expects to generate up to $2 billion in annual revenue within a few years.

The United States Treasury today announced pay rules for lower-ranking GM and GMAC execs, though Chrysler Group and Chrysler Financial were exempt format the new rules because they fell below the half a million dollar threshold.

Limits on the top 25 execs at each company had long been set. The new rules apply to the next 75 highest-paid employees, as long as their total pay exceeds $500,000.

Kenneth Feinberg, special master for executive compensation for the treasury has said that he would work with GM in its search to replace recently resigned CEO Fritz Henderson. He said ‘lateral’ compensation for a new chief executive would be considered.

Feinberg also state that it would have to revisit the pay limit issue and decide whether or not they still apply once the $6.7 billion in loans is paid back by June 2010, as originally planned.

A couple days before BMW officially unveiled the X5 M, tuner G-Power revealed its 525-hp V8 G-Power Typhoon based on the standard X5. Well, G-Power has now unveiled a new modification package for the X5 M and the X6 M.

The G-Power Widebody-kit Typhoon clears the way for the X5 M and X6 M’s 4.4L V8 twin-turbo for an extra 45-hp. That brings the total output to 600-hp with a maximum torque of 516 lb-ft. The modification allows the G-Power X5 M and the X6 M Typhoon to go from 0-62 mph in 4.5 seconds with a top speed of 186 mph. The standard 555-hp X5 M and X6 M go from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds.

Other than the power upgrades, G-Power is offering body kits that make both models look much more aggressive than their standard versions.

Personally, I prefer manual in any car since it makes the overall driving experience a little more exciting. Of course, when it comes to Porsche PDK 7-speed dual-clutch transmission – I’m a bit indecisive.

According to the predictions of the Friends of the National Automotive History Collection (NAHC), the new Ford Flex will become the most desired vehicle by future car collectors.

“We are delighted that the Ford Flex has been recognized by the NAHC as having a design that will become a collectible of the future,” said Kate Pearce, Flex marketing manager at Ford.

The members of the organization vote annually to predict the “Collectible Vehicle of the Future” from the year’s new American-built cars and trucks. The Ford Flex was selected from 8 new vehicles launched in 2009.

DETROIT, Dec. 11, 2009 – From America’s new cars and trucks launched in 2009, the Ford Flex will become the most desired by future car collectors. That is the prediction of the Friends of the National Automotive History Collection (NAHC).

Members of the organization, which supports the world-famous automotive collection at the Detroit Public Library, vote annually to predict the “Collectible Vehicle of the Future” from the year’s new American-built cars and trucks. The Ford Flex was selected from eight all-new vehicles launched in 2009.

The award was presented to Ford executives by the Friends of the NAHC at their annual holiday reception on Thursday, Dec. 10 at NAHC quarters in the Skillman Branch Library in downtown Detroit.

The NAHC is the world’s largest public archive of automotive lore and a treasure for automotive historians, journalists and collectors. Its collection of books, manuals, photos, company histories and historic documents is open to the public.

“We knew from the start that we had a vehicle with stand-out design that looks like nothing else on the road, but that also meets the needs of our customers looking for passenger space with innovative technology and great fuel economy,” she said. “Reaction from our customers has been fantastic and we hope they will enjoy their cars long into the future.”

Charles K. Hyde, chairman of the NAHC Board of Trustees, said, “This selection is unique among all the ‘Vehicle of the Year’ awards, because it is selected by car buffs who know what future collectors will value. We asked our members to predict which of this year’s new vehicles will turn heads in the Woodward Cruise of 2034.”
