The United States has many forests, but all of them cannot be counted as public hunting lands. Compared to many other states, Minnesota can provide a fair number of public hunting lands for the eager hunter. Also, plenty of resources are available to provide information regarding these lands. As a matter of fact, Minnesota public hunting land maps are readily provided by the Minnesota DNR or Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

All the public hunting properties looked after by the state of Minnesota can be pinpointed on the Minnesota public hunting land maps. Hunting regulations and rules slightly vary in each type of land.

According to the Minnesota public hunting land maps, hunting areas in this state have been categorized as follows–

(1) Wildlife Management Areas.
(2) State Forests.
(3) Wildlife Protection Areas.
(4) National Wildlife Refuges.
(5) National Forests.
(6) Industrial Forest Lands.
(7) County-owned Lands.

Each kind of land is described below–

(1) The Department of Natural Resources looks after uplands, woods and wetlands listed as “Wildlife Management Areas”. Public hunting is allowed on these locations during the normal hunting season.

(2) There are 56 forests belonging to the state. Covering an area of three million acres, these “state forests” are home to animals like bear, deer, ruffled grouse and moose. The public is given access for hunting in these areas.

(3) Some areas are under federal protection, yet open for limited public hunting. These “Wildlife Protection Areas” consist of a few uplands and wetlands. The Minnesota Public Recreation Information (PRIM) maps will lend Minnesota public hunting land maps to search for these locations.

(4) The US Fish and Wildlife Service gives access to Minnesota public hunting land maps as well as hunting laws related to its 8 “National Wildlife Refuges”. Hunting is restricted to certain parts only, and the harvest allowed is limited.

(5) The 2 “National Forests” of the state are Superior and Chippewa. A hunter can get Minnesota public hunting land maps for directions to these northern forests from the US National Forest Service, since hunting is allowed on these properties.

(6) Large companies dealing with forest products also own “Industrial Forest Lands”. Hunters are generally allowed access to these properties during the regular hunting season, unless a company wants to use its land for another purpose.

(7) Landowners who have not been able to pay their taxes, lose their properties (generally forested areas) to the government. They are then considered as “County-owned Lands”. There are Minnesota public hunting land maps to provide directions as well as the list of hunting regulations to be followed. Each county has its own hunting laws. Also, the acreage varies from place to place.

With more and more people turning to the great outdoors for recreation and family getaways, outdoor sports such as hunting and fishing are growing in popularity across the North American Continent. Camouflage hunting clothes are an absolute necessity if one expects any reasonable measure of success while they are participating in either one of these outdoor activities.

The two things that you have to bear in mind when shopping for camouflage hunting clothes is that they have to match the foliage that you will be hunting in and also that the clothes that you wear are correct for the climate as well.

If the weather will be warm then you will want to dress lightly, which means short sleeves. This means that you will need some camouflage skin paint for your arms and legs if you are wearing shorts. If you are going to be hunting in cold weather you will in turn need warm clothes as well.

You may also want to pick up a camouflage rain parka while you are at it, because getting wet on a cold day in the great outdoors is just no fun and can put an end to your days activities long before you had planned on it. Also remember to pick up some camouflage covering for your gun and any other gear that plan on dragging along with you.

One very important thing that you will want to bear in mind is that you want to be the hunter, not the hunted, so a bright orange hat and vest is very cheap life insurance that you should think about buying as well. You can wear the vest and hat while you are moving in the brush to you “stoop” you plan on hunting from and then take them off when you get there.

Archery caribou hunting provides a great challenge for skillful and adventurous bow-and-arrow hunters.

Archery caribou hunting can be one of the most challenging and exciting forms of hunting. Hunting caribou with a bow and arrow is an ideal challenge for experienced archers. However, with the right equipment, location, and knowledge, you can be a successful caribou hunter.

Much of the challenge comes from the nature of the caribou. These are fast-moving animals with a highly migratory nature. Caribou herds are constantly on the move. This style of hunting requires a hunter that is willing to move along with the herd. Caribou start early, usually beginning their trek prior to daybreak and continue to move until around sun down. Caribou hunters will want to locate themselves in known migratory paths, where caribou are guaranteed to pass. One of the many caribou hunting ranches or tours can help you locate these paths.

Once in a known caribou migration trail, hunters have two options for targeting animals. The method you choose will depend on your own skill with a bow. Skilled archers will be able to select a more stationary position. Still-hunting requires more accuracy with a bow, so you may choose to stalk-hunt instead. Stalking the caribou will require more energy, but will provide the hunter with more opportunities to get closer to the herd.

Aside from being extremely mobile, caribou are also very aware. They have a very highly attuned sense of smell and incredible hearing range. You can generally assume that if you can see a caribou, it is aware of your presence as well. This is what makes still-hunting so challenging. The comfort zone for archery caribou hunting is around sixty yards, but most archery hunters need a distance of around twenty yards for high accuracy. Because of this, caribou hunting is less challenging for firearm hunters, who can shoot prey from a much further distance. This also makes your location very important. Generally, heavily wooded areas are recommended for archery caribou hunting. This creates low visibility that will give the hunter an advantage over the animal. If the spot is chosen along an established path, this sets the archer up to ambush any passing caribou herds.

Equipment is also extremely important when archery caribou hunting. Archers will want to bring an adequate bow. To effectively kill a caribou, hunting will require a sixty to seventy pound draw weight bow. Color fletched arrows will also be helpful for identifying and repeating any successful hits. The tips of the arrow will need to be either aluminum or carbon to increase impact. The quick, migrating nature of the caribou will also require a lot of shots to increase the chances of a hit. For this reason, the archer will want to bring a large quiver that carries a large enough number of arrows to remain equipped.

Archery caribou hunting is for skilled archers and can require a lot of planning and patience. However, it is a great choice for bow-and-arrow hunters that have ceased to be challenged by more traditional hunting.

Whether it is fishing for lunker lake trout, giant brook trout, world record landlocked salmon, monster northern pike, or hunting for record book caribou and black bear, we will provide you with the hunting and fishing trip of a lifetime.

The caribou you will be hunting belong to the largest barren ground caribou herd in the world. Based on caribou migration patterns over the past fifteen years, Expeditions North has sites strategically positioned to intercept the late summer and early fall migrations as they enter Labrador. In addition to fixed camps, we utilize standard wood framed, canvas-covered camps on plywood platforms for our caribou hunting trips. We also have portable tent camps that can be used for quick sorties to the migration

Labrador Caribou hunting trips with Expeditions North offers the Labrador caribou hunter an opportunity to harvest two Quebec/Labrador Caribou from the George River caribou herd. This Caribou herd is the largest in the world and numbers between 700,000 and 800,000 animals.

Hunting Caribou in Labrador affords the hunter a tremendous opportunity to take a trophy Labrador Caribou with his choice of weapons, be it rifle, muzzle loader or bow and arrow.

These Quebec/Labrador Caribou migrate annually and their migration routes know no borders, taking them in any direction at any time. There are no set patterns to their migration routes.

Most of the supplies a dog will need are items to help his owner track him. Many people may not realize, but raccoons are a nocturnal animal, which means they sleep during the day and move around in search for food at night. While this may be the best way for the raccoon to avoid danger, it makes a raccoon hunter’s life much more difficult. A coon hunter needs a dog or two to find the coon at night because their eyesight is much more adept at hunting in the dark, but the hunter also needs to be able to see and locate his dogs to have any success. The hunter has a few items to choose from to help him keep track of his dog when coon hunting. Choosing one of them, or using a few in conjunction, will save the hunter a lot of headaches.

The first item to invest in is a collar that lights up. These collars run on a couple of small batteries and will greatly increase the hunter’s chances of keeping track of his dog at night. The second item that works great in conjunction with the collar is a reflective jacket. This is exactly what crossing guards use, except made to fit your dog, often with Velcro to secure the fit. The jacket will make your life much easier when trying to follow and locate your dog at night; your flashlight will reflect off the dog’s jacket and the hunter can always keep a trained eye on his dog.

The last option, and a slightly more expensive one, is a beeper. This is a tiny box that attaches to the dog’s collar. When the hunter loses track of his dog, he pushes the button on the remote unit he carries and the beeper on the dog starts to go off. AS long as the dog is within close range, the hunter will have no problem findng him. Using some of these items will allow the hunter to keep track of his dogs when hunting coons at night; it will save him a few headaches, and enough time that he may get a chance to run more than a few coons each night.

At a first glance, coon hunting may not seem like the most appealing type of hunting as it involves a lot of attention, agility, patience, and a great deal of luck on your side. But at a closer look, its remarkable assets may catch your eye. More and more people are starting to take that second, more attentive look at coon hunting, discovering its fascinating essence, benefits and overall attributes that make it stand above the rest.

For example, how many types of game can bring the hunter such great profits as raccoon? Very few I’m afraid; and on the rest of them results are often harder to obtain anyway. A regular hunter can draw a line after his coon hunting season and see a five-digit number over his profit column. Raccoon furs are very expensive, and sold on public auctions they can reach even higher prices, which only means good news for the little bandit’s hunters everywhere. While these creatures are considered a nuisance in many regions, we are encouraged to contribute to their culling, whilst getting some money out of it.

Another aspect that makes any raccoon hunter proud is the fact that these animals are a great cooking resource. With their delicious meat, they offer a tasty alternative to other types of red meat, while offering many appetizing cooking opportunities. Restaurants all over the United States, especially near famed hunting spots, have assimilated coons as an important dinning supply. And the popularity of coon based cookery is as high as the popularity of the sport itself.

For dog lovers this is the type of game to follow as hounds are essential to a successful hunt. Their goal is to chase raccoons through all kinds of terrain, sometimes even in water, until the small creatures refuge themselves into a tree so that you can have an easy shot ahead. Moreover, because raccoons are active during the night, dogs are an invaluable ally you can always count on. Also, because of their keen sense of smell, they can detect raccoon presence when you don’t spot them yourself with your hunting lights.

It has been said that, to many hunters, hearing the sound of hounds barking and chasing a raccoon to a tree is so fulfilling that the rest of the hunting process is almost unnecessary. This may as well be true for anyone who tries it even once, but past experience show that no one tries raccoon hunting just once. In fact, it has proved so addictive that some hunters have left behind hunting customs of over twenty years or more, and start hunting for these animals instead.

With so many appealing benefits to it, coon hunting is surely the way to go if you plan on becoming a serious hunter or if you’re on a lookout for new thrill. Aside from the excitement it offers, raccoon hunting is a profitable practice as well, while being the basic ingredient of many great hunting recipes you can delight your friends with.

Coon hunting is one of North America’s favorite pastimes, apart from being a real blessing for farmers all across the continent. Raccoons are hunt for their precious fur as well as for their delicious meat but also because they destroy millions of dollars worth of crops nationwide each year, many farmers getting crop depredation permits to have hunters take the coons destroying their yields. Agile beings, excellent swimmers and climbers, the raccoons are a worthy challenge for any hunter.

Because these creatures are nocturnal, meaning they are active during the night, coon hunting is strictly done accordingly and using trained hunting dogs and the coon hunting lights, as well as a wide range of gears and supplies. They all play important roles in the success of a hunting session and choosing the right ones is crucial to the results you get. The hounds must be mature, agile, with a good nose for picking up raccoon scent and most of all, able to run through any kind of terrain including in and out of water. The hunting lights, with all their forms, shapes and alternative uses, are invaluable elements every raccoon hunter must bring to his game. All the other gear items and supplies do come secondly but they can improve your results drastically if you use them wisely and effectively.

Coon hunting is an activity that hides many secrets even from experienced hunters but the basic, most critical thing every hunter must know is where exactly to hunt for raccoons. As elementary as it sounds, many beginners neglect the aspect of scouting for a location ahead of time and find themselves in an area where the furry creatures are very few in numbers, thus having a good chance of being a failed hunting attempt. Hunting should be done in areas where you know raccoons are feeding, such as woods along rivers or streams as well as in areas where there are den trees are good. If you are going to hunt on a private land don’t forget to ask permission from the owners in advance, because otherwise it is punishable by law in many states.

Although raccoons are hunted for their delectable meet and for the fact that they are a threat to many farmers’ activity, they are especially wanted for their precious fur coats. Raccoon hunters know that the fur is heaviest in late winter and earlier furs will not be as thick and will not bring top price when they sell them at the fur auction. The fur is very durable and is used for coats and collars and for trimming winter gloves and hats. So remember that large raccoons with thick coats will bring you the best earnings.

All in all, coon hunting can be an entertaining and rewarding activity if you keep in mind the basic facts and dedicate your focus on putting them to good use. Concentrate on getting as many raccoons as you can and don’t let occasional disappointments ruin your day. In doing so you’ll hardly be able to wait until the next season’s start, and this can only mean bad news for the furry bandits.

Coon hunting is one of the most popular sports in America today, it is quickly becoming more and more popular seemingly everyday. Very simply, hunting for Coons is great for both beginners and avid hunters, as raccoon can be a great way to practice your hunting skills for the larger game.

There are few things as fun as being out on the trail in the middle of the night, with your hunting dog bellowing in the distance and being out in the forest. Here are some great tips to help you to find the best places to go coon hunting, and also the best coon hunting supplies to utilize.

First of all, keep in mind that hunting raccoons is not only great for getting a good meal, but also good for farmers because they don’t worry about the raccoons getting into their crops and destroying them. Also, no matter how good a hunter you are, raccoons will offer a great challenge for you, because they are very good swimmers and tree climbers, and can allude you very easily.

Also, since raccoons sleep during the day and are active at night, you have to make sure that you find good trained hunting dogs to help you with your coon trip. Also, hunting wheat lights are extremely important as well. You will need a lot of different supplies and equipment nor to be a successful coon hunter, because of the difficulty that this kind of hunting can offer you.

Very simply, the hunting dog you purchase must be very quick and have excellent sense of smell. When the coons climb the tree, especially the middle of the night, just about the only way you can never find them is by using a hunting dog to track them down. The hunting lights are extremely important, because without a good one you’ll never catch the coon because you simply can’t see.

Of course, by far the most important aspect of hunting raccoons is to make sure you know the area your targets will be hiding in ahead of time. Very simply, when you don’t know this area, it will be extremely hard to find coons, particularly at night. It’s hard enough to hunt during the day without understanding the area, but when you try to do it at night, it is virtually a suicide mission.

Therefore, make sure you know all the places where the raccoons go for their feeding, where they live, their favorite trees to climb, etc. Also, if you plan and hunting on private land, make sure that you get permission from the owner of the land.

If you don’t, you will be in for a lot of legal trouble.

Of course, keep in mind that raccoons are also great tasting when you do catch them; they are a great delicacy around America. Also, during the late winter, the raccoon spurs the heaviest, making this the ideal time to go to hunting.

These are utilized many times for both for coats and hats, collars, winter gloves, etc. Therefore, when you do your hunting during the winter, you can expect to get the most return on your investment.

The bottom line is, coon hunting is a great sport for the avid outdoorsman, because you can do it outdoors, at night, and in some awesome scenery. If you enjoy being outdoors, this is a perfect four for you.

This kind of hunting can not only offer you the opportunity to profit when you catch a good coon, but can also give you a chance to unwind after a long work week. Hopefully these coon hunting tips will help you to become a successful hunter as quickly as possible.

Raccoon hunters have become a dying breed; what once was a popular rural pastime has now faded into history. Most hunters now focus their attentions to bigger game like deer and bear, but raccoon hunting can be just as satisfying as these other hunts. Raccoon hunting can be a great thrill and should be considered by the hunter looking to try something new. It’s a very kid-friendly sport, and is great if you’re looking to just introduce kids into the world of hunting. Because coon hunting has been all but abandoned, it’s a hunt that will actually do good for the raccoon population. Raccoons have become grossly overpopulated, with more and more digging into neighborhood garbage for food, the raccoon population needs to be controlled.

There are a few supplies necessary for a successful coon hunt. Since raccoons are nocturnal, meaning they sleep during the day and move around at night, a hunter cannot rely as much on his eyesight. Having a good coon dog can add a new dimension to the coon hunt and increase a hunter’s chances of success. Not only are the dog’s eyes more adept at seeing at night, his nose is much better at picking up the subtle scents around him. Plus, hearing your dog start to bark when he picks up a scent is an adrenaline rush unlike any other.

The next thing every hunter will need is something to help him see so he’s not stumbling around blind in the woods at night. A flashlight is a good start, but you may want to consider a hat mounted light. While flashlights might be easier to maneuver, they can also be a nuisance to carry, so a hat mounted light is generally much more practical. There are also a number of accessories available that either have lights on them, are glow in the dark, or at the very least will reflect light to aid the hunter in the dark; a compass with some form of light will definitely prove a worthwhile investment.

Safety is another issue to be especially concerned with when coon hunting. Often times it is a hunt involving more than just a couple of people, and since it happens at night, the hunter needs to be extremely careful. Be sure that everyone stays relatively close together, and that everyone is wearing reflective vests. As long as safety is the top priority, a coon hunt will always be an exciting experience, whether there are any trophies to bring home or not.

There was a time in the not so distant past when coon hunting was a national pastime for rural America. Young kids and veteran hunters took to the woods at night with their dogs and searched for the elusive raccoon. In the 1970’s and ’80’s there was a lot of money to be made in the sale of coon pelts, so for many families it became a way to supplement income. But for many more hunters, coon hunting was a passionate hobby. Many kids were introduced to coon hunting at a young age, and it was a hobby they could do without the close supervision of adults. Coon hunting became a great way to foster independence in kids, and teach them responsibility while taking care of their own hunting dogs.

But fast-forward to today and the hobby has all but died out. Over-zealous animal rights groups have won the battle against coon hunting, virtually erasing it from mainstream America. While raccoon pelts can still be sold, due to changing fashion styles, they are not in high demand as they once were. There are also signs that raccoon populations have soared since there is nothing to keep their numbers controlled. More raccoons are seen on the side of the road than ever before, and in the last decades they’ve become a nuisance to both rural living and city neighborhoods.

Coon hunting is a practice undertaken at night, which can make the sport much more challenging, and much more exciting. But it is for this reason that a good coon dog or two is necessary to the hunt. A good coon dog should listen exceptionally well; when hunting in the dark of night a hunter needs to be able to have full trust in his dog. It’s also a plus if the dog is vocal; when he picks up a track the dog should start to bark as he’s following it. This will let the hunter know the dog is actually on a track and not just forever sniffing around. When the dog finally gets the coon treed, he should be very vocal, a hunter should encourage this trait in his dog. The hunter also has some options for keeping track of his dogs when hunting. He can purchase a collar with lights powered by small batteries, or a vest that reflects when a flashlight is shined on it. However the hunter chooses to outfit his dog, coon hunting is a pastime that is well worth the effort put into it, and provides a great experience for everyone who partakes.
