Washington, DC resident Chloe Reid, a sophomore at the Maret School in DC, was recently named the overall winner of the third annual Artisan Farms Young Rider Grand Prix Series. Held at the 2013 FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, Florida, the competition ran over a 12-week period and included four Grand Prix competitions. Chloe competed two horses during the series, Damascus and King of Hearts, although King of Hearts only participated in the first class, the $15,000 Artisan Farms Young Rider Grand Prix on February 10. Chloe rode Damascus in all four competitions.

“I’ve had King of Hearts now for three years. We have built a great relationship,” Chloe said. She added that building relationships with her horses is what leads to success. Damascus is a relatively new mount for her as he was purchased last summer when Chloe was competing in Europe with the 2012 USEF Young Riders team. Their partnership seems to have grown quickly as he is the horse with whom she won the Wellington series. “The Nation’s Cup format of the third competition was the most fun because I got to compete with my friends and as a team,” she added. The $20,000 Artisan Farms Young Rider Grand Prix Team was a two-round class held on March 7.

The other two competitions were the $15,000 Artisan Farms Young Rider Grand Prix, held under the lights in the International Arena on February 15, and the $15,000 Artisan Farms Young Rider Grand Prix Final, held on the grass of the Stadium Derby Field on March 24. Chloe’s win earns her an automatic spot on this year’s USEF Young Rider European Tour with the costs of her horses’ transportation being covered by the Dutta Corp. in association with Guido Klatte.

Read more about this talented young rider in our June Young Rider issue and learn how Chloe got started in show jumpers and how she balances school work with competing internationally.

Starting this season, the Maryland Horse Shows Association has changed the way it distributes points for its year-end awards. The new points system loosely follows what the U.S. Hunters & Jumpers Association introduced a few seasons ago and involves various multipliers based on the rating of the show and the number of entries.

The current MHSA Rule Book states, “In the Hunter divisions, points are determined by both the rating of the competition as well as the number of horses shown. Points are calculated utilizing a combination of the base points per competition rating and adding one point for each entry shown in the first performance class.” Several charts can be found in the rule book to help competitors calculate possible points. There are also charts available to calculate Hunter Classic and various jumper classes.

So how do these changes affect competitors? Well, in some ways it rewards those who choose to compete at the higher-rated shows and in larger classes. It makes winning a division against 30 other horses worth more than winning in a class of 10 or less. However, not all competitors can afford to or have the time to travel to some of the larger rated shows. Will this new point system make earning a year-end trophy impossible for those riders?

The Equiery wants to know your thoughts.
• Are you in support of or against the new MHSA point system and why?
• What benefits do you see to the system?
• What negatives do you see to the system?
• Does the new system change your competition plans? If so, how? If not, why not?
• Does the new system change your competition goals?
• Are there any changes to the point system you would like to see made?

The Washington International Horse Show, one of the world’s most prestigious equestrian events, is pleased to announce the election of an outstanding and committed slate of officers to serve through 2014. Juliet W. Reid was named chairman of the Board of Directors. Victoria Lowell was elected president, with Anne Poulson to serve as vice president, Marc D. Oken as treasurer and Laurie Peterson Fellows as secretary.

Reid’s family is very active in horse sports. Her daughter is a top junior rider competing nationally and internationally in show jumping.

“Juliet brings vision, commitment and personal passion to the Washington International Horse Show. As president she revitalized this special Washington tradition by building new partnerships with the city, sponsors and the military community. She has made it an exciting sporting and community event unlike anything else inside the beltway or in the equestrian world,” said retiring chairman Gregory Gingery, who remains on the Board after serving as chairman since 2009.

from the Washington International Horse Show

WIHS is now accepting applications for the 2013 WIHS Youth Ambassador and Junior Committee. Don’t delay! The deadline is Sunday, April 21.

About the Program: Introduced in 2009, the WIHS Youth Ambassador Program was created to engage young equestrian enthusiasts from the local community who have an interest in learning about WIHS and working side by side with the WIHS staff to produce the show. In addition, WIHS relies on the youth perspective in developing many special and community-related events.

The WIHS Junior Committee also is selected through this application process. The WIHS Junior Committee is a group of students who develop and assist with a variety of projects before and during the show. We have many returning members but there are a few spots open.

The 2013 WIHS Youth Ambassador will be announced in May.

Washington DC resident Chloe Reid was just named the overall winner of the third annual Artisan Farms Young Rider Grand Prix Series held at the 2013 FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, Florida. The festival ran over a 12-week period with four Grand Prix competitions: the $15,000 Artisan Farms Young Rider Grand Prix on February 10, the $15,000 Artisan Farms Young Rider Grand Prix on February 15 (held under the lights in the International Arena), the two-round $20,000 Artisan Farms Young Rider Grand Prix Team event on March 7 and the $15,000 Artisan Farms Young Rider Grand Prix Final on March 24 (held on the grass of The Stadium Derby Field).

Riders are ranked based on the number of clear round they produce throughout the series. This year, Reid competed in all four shows with both King of Hearts and Damascus and came out on top of the series. Her win earns her an automatic spot on the 2013 USEF Young Rider European Tour, which she was a part of in 2012. This year however, the win also earned her transportation costs covered by Dutta Corp. in association with Guido Klatte.
