I met Tanner Goldbeck (racecar13.com) in 2003, through our mutual friend, Joe Shea (jshea9.com). As it turns out, Tanner was a car guy and introduced me to others who were as well. They knew a lot about cars, built them and sometimes raced. I spent quite a bit of time hanging out in their garages and shops, witnessing what they do, and taking pictures of it for fun. They introduced me to a culture that I wasn’t really aware of even though it had been around for years. At first it looked like they were just working on old
rust buckets, then I heard them fire-up, rode in them, and my perspective changed. What they were doing was more like art to me. What they wore, the music they listened to, their lingo… it was all interesting. What started out as fun, turned into a bit of an obsession as I tried to capture the essence of what they were about.

It was a trip to the Los Angeles County Raceway (LACR) for the 2004 Antique Nationals Drag Races that broadened my perspective even more. I was invited to tag along and rode shotgun with David Krueger (bass player for the band, Blazing Haley) in his car. After a mind-bending two-hour ride in a fully-blown, 600HP, 1952 DeSoto Station Wagon, we arrived at the track in Palmdale, CA. As I walked around, I found myself surrounded by a bunch of people who were the same breed as my friends. It was like taking a step back in time (pre 1974 to be exact) and after spending the day shooting everything in sight, I knew this wouldn’t be my last time going to an event like it. Since then, I have attended many others that include: Ratfink Reunion, March Meet, Paso Robles Car Show, El Mirage and most recently, the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekender #13.

Tanner also introduced me to the folks at Garage Magazine for whom I’ve now done several photo shoots. On one memorable assignment, I had the opportunity to meet car builder, Cole Foster and take a 100 m.p.h. ride in the ‘36 Ford he built for Kirk Hammett (guitarist for the band, Metallica).

These days I’d like to say I’m a little bit more of a car guy, but I’m sure I’ll never have the true dedication it takes to be the real deal. I can’t see myself breaking out a toolbox on the side of the road after my car breaks down, and get it rolling again. For now, I’ll just observe, maybe drink a couple of cold “road sodas” and trip the shutter button on moments that make me wish I was. In the following page of this book you will find a selection of images that came from some of those moments.

Born and raised in California’s agricultural, Central Valley, Larry Mills, now a resident of Santa Barbara, is a mostly self-taught photographer using his cameras as tools for survival and artistic expression. While studying Graphic Design at S.B.C.C., he made the personal discovery of photography. So taken by it in fact, after only two semesters of formal training in the medium, he chose to forfeit the rest of his education to free-up more time and energy for the sole purpose of learning-by-doing.

Since that decision, photography has played a roll in his life on an almost daily basis. Larry, has used his gained knowledge to obtain working positions in professional imaging labs, execute editorial assignments for
numerous print and online publications, exhibit in solo and group art exhibits, and photograph live music for the Santa Barbara Bowl, concert venue, where he has been the house photographer for ten years.

Elroy Artspace Gallery to Feature Tiki Style Fine Art in “Atomic Tiki” Group Show Opening Reception on August’s First Thursday Artwalk

Portland, OR (July 8, 2010) — Elroy Artspace gallery is pleased to announce Atomic Tiki, a group exhibition of ‘Tiki Style’ fine art. The exhibition will include the works of over 20 artists – including several already famous for their tiki works, and many of our local favorites who soon will be. In Portland’s largest exhibition exclusively of this art genre whose pull has waxed and waned in recent decades, Atomic Tiki aims to excite Portland’s art fans with Tiki Style, because it’s back and more powerful than ever.

Although dictionaries define ‘Tiki’ as “a wooden or stone image of a Polynesian God,” the art and lifestyle they inspire are a wholly American artistic creation. More than just an art show, Atomic Tiki is an examination of a larger cultural phenomenon – a peek into the modern Tiki lifestyle which thrived during the Atomic Age, one in which people decorate their homes and social gatherings in the retro tropical motif and dreamy island trimmings of yore; wooden masks, grass skirts and velvet paintings of nubile women – Tiki style had more to do with what Americans wanted the South Pacific to be than what it really was… Also dubbed “Polynesian Pop,” this “Tiki Style” is becoming recognized as a bona-fide art movement whose resurgence is met with excitement because, of course, Tiki is fun.

The Artists:

Oregon artists: Amy Ruppel, Arnold Pander, Ben Adams, Ben Burch, Brent Wear, Brian Cook, Chris Haberman, Chris Young, George Perrou, Ian “Pian” McWilliams, Jack Pollock, Jackie Avery, John McClain, Jonathon Hill-Jacquard, Mark Randall, Myah Bailey, Renee Hartig, Robert Wiles and Tim Oakley – and artists from the Tiki coasts: Bob ‘Tiki Hana’ Ho, CZM/El Gato Gomez, Dawn Frasier, Derek Yaniger, John Mulder, Luis Diaz, Richard Becker, Rob Kramer, Robert Jiminez and Sherill Anne Gross.

This video documents Jesse Reno’s painting process, as he works on 4 paintings simultaneously from start to finish. one of the paintings becomes collaged into one of the others so he ends with 3 finished pieces. The idea was to document Jesse’s process as pure and true to form as possible. jumping from one piece to another and back again as the impulses and urges push and pull him. Painting over layer after layer as he searches for just the right feeling, composition, meaning, and colors he needs to see to call a painting finished. through out the video there are still shots that hold every so often to help the viewer better see each piece in its entirety during its process. This should help you the viewer keep track of whats going on.. good luck..you might need to see it twice to fully understand it..

The video was shot over the course of 4 days, in the course of approximately 36 hrs. It was all shot as a series of still photographs adding up to approximately 30,000 photos. Wisa Kuuttila shot all the photos and assembled them into the animation. Jesse composed, recorded, and produced all the music.

Opening Reception: Saturday July 31st 5 – 8PM
Extended hours for last Thursday July 29th 4 – 9PM

Alicia Blue Gallery
1468 NE Alberta St. | Portland, OR 97211

Alicia Blue Gallery is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition, “I Dream Animal”, featuring Los Angeles artists: Christine Nguyen, Karen Florek and Caryn Baumgartner. These three artists’ works represent a deep reflection into the world of imagination and dream. Their work shares a common sensibility that feels akin to a floating dream state- familiar, as much as fleeting.

Caryn Baumgartner’s oil on canvases are richly painted with colors that, if imagined, were mined from terrestrial mineral and oxide veins- powdered and instinctively processed. Crowning the surface with heavy distress, these paintings become gentle phantoms. Her expertise as a painter is seen in her large works, where her simple approach to her canvas keeps an unspoiled feeling. In both “Stag” and “Fawn”, she abstracts the figure and leaves just an outline of the animal surrounded in rich color, a ghostly reminder of the perfection of nature.

Christine Nguyen’s experimental use of photography comes alive in her large-scale installations. One feels like they have passed into another world- deep in the nadir of ocean, discovering schools of undersea neons with a mineral-like frequency. Alternately traveling to outer space with crystalline frost growing outside your view and minimally scattered fragile hexagon colonies. The black backgrounds with nearly celestial light leaks are highlighted with brightly colored creatures and constellations stemming from her imagination. Her imagery draws on elegant science and imagination-provoking wonder.

Karen Florek’s series of lith prints are explorations of the internal world of the body. Her hand altered images made in the darkroom are mysterious. X-ray photon blacks and whites with glass like elements add to the scientific beauty of an almost unclassifiable, yet organic skeletal subject. The process of creating a lith print involves time and dedication; there is nothing instant about it. The visual outcome is unique with a grainy surface retaining dark shadows and soft delicate highlights. Different colors and hues can be achieved by chemical reaction as the developer begins to oxidize and age, which adds to the unpredictable effect.

Disjecta Interdisciplinary Art Center
8371 N Interstate Avenue,
Portland, Oregon
Gallery Hours: Friday- Sunday 12:00pm – 6:00pm, or by appointment

Disjecta is pleased to present an exhibition of paintings and works on paper by esteemed artist Henk Pander. The works in this exhibition document Pander’s close relationship with his granddaughter, Mary Alice, who lived with Pander and his wife, Dolores, for over ten years. During this time, Mary Alice was a common fixture in Pander’s studio, either as a subject, or working at her own easel alongside her grandfather. Included in the exhibition, curated by Meagan Atiyeh, are oil paintings from 2002 through 2010 and artist sketchbooks.
The subject of a number of museum exhibitions, including an upcoming retrospective at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art, Henk Pander’s work is represented in every important institutional collection in the Northwest. His vast body of work demonstrates the practiced eye of a watcher, from his remembered scenes of Nazi occupied Europe to the dramatic canvasses documenting the wreck of the New Carissa off the Oregon coast, to the many commissions for public agencies, to drawings, photocollages and paintings created from his post 9/11 visit to lower Manhattan.
In the four decades since Pander arrived in Portland, he has had a hand in shaping the local art community the city enjoys today. During the 60s and 70s, Pander made ink-drawn political and cultural posters for a variety of causes. He was a founding member of the alternative Storefront Theatre in 1970. Later, he was the force behind The Visual Chronicle, a Regional Arts & Culture Council project to document the city through the eyes and works of local artists. In 1991, Pander was bestowed with the first-ever Oregon Arts Commission Master Artist Fellowship. In 2005, he received a Governor’s Arts Award and the following year was honored with a Visual Arts Fellowship from the Regional Arts & Culture Council.
