The Junior Claret Cup has so far only received one team entry (11 players from Outlane) for the event which takes place at Halifax Golf club on Thursday June 7th.

Spokesman for the competition Bob Hazelden said, "The event is an ideal opportunity for clubs to enter their juniors in the competition who would not usually play in their teams and also it is a Stableford competition which means that a really bad hole from a player will not necessarily harm their score".

The competition is sponsored by David and Janet Cox who provide the players with a snack and a drink before they go out and then on completion of their round a meal is provided for everyone in the competition.

The juniors play for the Claret Cup as a team game and also play for individual prizes as well. Bob commented, " it is an excellent days golf for the juniors and to play for the trophy (which is a beautiful miniature replica of the Open Claret Cup} as a team and also to play for prizes for a £6 entry fee is amazing value".

Bob also said, "The annual competition is held at different clubs each year and normally it has a large entry because clubs can enter players who have not got a club handicap but can play in the competition off the maximum of 28 handicap."

Clubs can enter as many team players as they like (boys and girls) and the best two scores from the team win the Cup for their club and he also goes onto say that the competition starts at 8.30 and for further information required you can contact Bob on 01484 655097 or David and Janet Cox on 01422 883898.

Union off to great start

Marsden have had a good response from offering under sixteens free membership, twelve juniors have taken up this offer in the last four weeks.

Among these is the Captains Mr Stuart Baldwin grandson Ted Luca Ainley at two year and four months making him the youngest member Marsden have ever had, Ted can be seen most Saturday's with either his Grandad or Dad wielding his plastic clubs on the putting green and looks a star in the making.

14 YEARS OLD CHARLOTTE WINS LADIES PRESIDENTS PRIZE BY 6 SHOTS !

The Outlane Presidents Prize for the Ladies was a close run affair for the players who were in the prize positions from second to tenth place but all these could not get anywhere near the score that 14 years old Charlotte Hirst recorded.

Charlotte had a blistering start to post an outward nine holes of only 31 net shots and whilst her inward nine score produced 35 net shots her total of 66 was an amazing six shots better than second place Christine Lamont (72) who had a shot to spare over Wendy Stott and Sandra Eastwood who both registered 73 and then a host of players in the 70's.

The over 60's prize which is a reduced stableford competition on the Presidents day was won by Pat Beever who had a 1 point win from Dot Wellings .

Gents Mid-Week Medal

The Outlane Mid-Week medal was a first win for new member Wayne Milner who had 41 points and it was a case of a chip and a one putt which helped his score as a 20 point total on the first nine was improved by one point (21)on the second nine.

In second place was Geoffrey Hirst who had 40 points which Simon McKenzie matched but his 20 point total on both halves could not match the 22 points total of the former who took the honours on the count back. Another new member Robert Palmer had 38 points with Stephen Spencer who again lost out on the count back.

The Mid - Week medal has proved very popular for members who can't play at week-end and a very healthy 56 golfers took part in a ever growing entry.

Chris Hanson, who topped last season’s Order of Merit, will make a return to the 888poker.com PGA EuroPro Tour next week to defend his title at Bovey Castle.

Hanson will be joined at the Your Golf Travel Classic by John E Morgan and West Ham United midfielder Gary O’Neil, who will be playing as an amateur at the Devon event. Current Order of Merit co-

leaders Dan Seymour and Michael LeMesurier will also feature as they look to build on early-season success in a bid to finish high up the rankings.

Morgan is one of the most high-profile graduates of the PGA EuroPro Tour and stunned the golfing world in 2002 by gaining both his USPGA Tour Card and European Tour Card in his rookie year.

As the Tour’s best performer in 2011 Hanson earned his place on this summer’s Challenge Tour, along with the other top-five finishers on last season’s PGA EuroPro Tour. However, he is not participating on Europe’s second-tier tour next week and so returns to Bovey Castle, where he shot 68, 69, 63 to finish ten under par and claim the £10,000 winners’ cheque last June.

Hanson knows he’ll be expected to perform at Bovey but is nonetheless relishing a return to a course which has always proved fruitful for the Yorkshire man.

“It will be a really tough event,” he said. “There will be a lot of pressure on me to perform well with the background that I have got there but I’ll go there and enjoy it. I have a few things to work on with my game and it will be a good week to try those things out.

“The EuroPro Tour has a lot of history for me; I played on it for five years and had some really good results. Bovey Castle has always been really good to me, so to come back on a week off and play somewhere I really like is going to be good.

“I won there last year and in 2006. I’ve had two wins and two top tens in my five tournaments there, so I have some good memories of the course.

“You have to control your ball well at Bovey. It’s quite tight in places and the wind is a key factor on the back nine. My distance control is pretty good so Bovey does suit my game.

“The back nine is amazing. The stream goes through every hole on the back nine and those last four holes are really tough and 15 and 16 are absolutely brilliant golf holes which set it up for a really great finish.”

Hanson has enjoyed a successful start since moving up to the Challenge Tour but continues to keep a close eye on how things are unfolding on the 888poker.com PGA EuroPro Tour too.

“I have a lot of background on the EuroPro,” he said. “I have a lot of good friends who play on it and I keep a close eye on how those guys are doing.

“Since the EuroPro Tour Championship last October I have had a bit of time at home with my family. I went to European Tour Q School in December but didn’t get past the second stage there.“I started the Challenge Tour season in India in January and finished 30th. I went to Columbia after that and finished fourth and then made the cut last week in France, so it hasn’t been a bad start to the season.”

On a miserable day, more like November than May, the 'A.G.Beck Trophy' was held at Bradley Hall on Saturday 19 May with a field of 150 competitors.

The early starters had to contend with a cold north westerly wind and light rain but as the day unfolded, thankfully the rain ceased but the wind remained and was the main reason for the C.S.S. rising to 72.

Setting an early and challenging target, was Paul Toon (15) who returned a nett score of 68 and this was despite recording an 8 on the stroke 18, twelfth hole and John Rhodes (10) with a nett 69.

As lunchtime was reached, the lead had changed hands with Alex Foster (14) equalling the leading score but with a superior back nine. However his lead was short lived when the winner of the previous week competition, Fred Mayland also shot 68 but again with a better back nine score.

Finally, Peter Spedding (11) went into the lead with a nett 67 and this was sufficient to take the trophy.

Sadly, one of the Junior members, Elliot Lister (15) returned a nett 64 but although he had entered his score onto the computer, he neglected to submit his card and was therefore disqualified.

Leading Scores

It was agreed to buy a turquoise glass block for £1,000 to be inscribed with, “Thousand Smiles – Elland Golf Club, Captains’ Charity 2011”

The cheque was presented to Kate Goldring by the 2011 Captains, Barry Littlewood and Carmen Leonard. Barry Holbrook (Rabbit Captain) was unable to be present.

The money has been raised through social events organised by the Ladies Section, including a Wine and Cheese evening and a flower demonstration. The Menes’ Section had a lunch event with guest speaker, held various competition days and had a box on the bar.

The three captains are delighted with the money raised and would like to thank everyone for their support.

The Outlane Mid-Summer Final is a competition when the top 32 nett scores plus equals from the qualifier, which was played on Saturday May 12th, go through to Finals Day on Sunday May 27th.

The format is that the best nett scores go out in reverse order of their position (in other words the leading players are last out whilst those others who have qualified are out in backward order from their scores).

The weekly competition at Bradley Hall on Saturday 12 May was the 'Jubilee Trophy' which was launched in 1987 to commemorate the Queens Silver Jubilee and in this 'Diamond' year it seemed to have more signifiance to many of the competitors.

The format for the event is a 'greensome' whereby partners both drive from the tee and then select one of the tee shots and play alternate shots with that ball.

Although the weather was fine and sunny throughout the day, a stiff easterly wind made scoring difficult for the majority of participants apart from local G.P's, Carl Littlewood and Fred Mayland whose nett score of 65 could not be bettered. However, a new member to the Club this season, Andy Hardy (7) coincidently a consultant at Calderdale Royal, and his partner, John Greenwood a former Police Officer, returned a commendable 67 for second place.

Of the 64 pairs competing, only 10 managed to get below par.

England under 18 boys squad member Nick Marsh (Huddersfield Golf Club) finished joint third with fellow England boy squad member Ashton Turner (Kenwick Park Golf Club) in the annual Fairhaven Trophies Event at the Fairhaven Golf Club, Lytham.

Marsh who held the 36 hole lead at -3 under par completed the 72 hole under 18 boys tournament with rounds of 70-71-73-74 for a total of 288 (Level par). The eventual winner was Patrick Kelly from Lincolnshire with a score of 285 (-3).

Marsh also represented England in the Nations Cup team competition and finished 2nd.

Outlane news

BUSY 3 DAY COMPETITION SCHEDULE FOR OUTLANE GOLFERS

The golfers at Outlane have been busy with an abundance of competitions to play over the week end and Monday and whilst the Saturday Competition combined three in one the Sunday event was a final for all the major 2011 winners to play for the annual Howlett Cup.

The Saturday one incorporates the May Medal , Captains Charity and Marchant Cup which had a large turn out of members and it was a count back in both divisions that had to be sorted out for the eventual winners. In the first division Nick Sutton came out on top after his gross 72 (net 64) just pipped Eddie Casper who had a gross 77 (net 64) with a better back nine.

Bryn Jenkinson equalled the best gross score (72) but was a further two shots back with a net 66 and Steve Cooper also had a 66 net from his 81 gross. The second division winner Peter Bishop finished in first place after another count back although his score of 69 net included a nine on the eight hole after going out of bounds twice with his first two tee shots and in second place was Cameron West who lost on the count back with Richard Gordino also had a count back loss.

The results from the May Medal are carried through for the Marchant Cup when the best eight net scores from both divisions play in knockout rounds throughout the season.

MAY MEDAL, CAPTAINS CHARITY, MARCHANT CUP

1st Division

Nick Sutton - 72 gros (8) = 64 net

Eddie Casper - 77 gross (13) = 64 net

Bryn Jenkinson - 72 gross (6) = 66 net

2nd Division

Peter Bishop - 90 gross (21) = 69 net

Cameron West - 94 gross (25) = 69 net

Richard Gordino - 90 gross (21) = 69 net

HOWLETT CUP

On Sunday saw all the 2011 major competition winners playing for the annual Howlett Cup which starts the years majors in a shoot out format between the players and once again it was a member who has already started his season in tremendous form with another win.

Jarrad Hazelden and Calvin Howell reached the 18th hole on level terms after all the other entries had been knocked out and it was the former who took the honours with a regulation par against the latters bogey. The trophy is unique in that only the winner can use the cup in the bar from drinking out of during the season.

Bank Holiday Monday Medal

The above competition was a first success for the winner Damien Talbot who had a consistent round which included 4 gross birdies and although Mark Uttley matched his 42 points it was the back nine of the former which proved to be the deciding factor.

A 23 point second half was just too much for the runner-up while another new comer in the success stakes Justin Roberts was very satisfied with his 40 points and it was all of these three scores that every one chased from their early tee off round.

Damien Talbot = 42 points

Mark Uttley = 42 points

Toby Garrett (1), Crosland Heath, won the 2012 Page Trophy by one stroke from Chris Hanson, Ind Woodsome Hall, with Barry Martin (16), Bradley Park, third on the same score. Chris received the Colin H. Swain Trophy for best professional and the Crosland Heath team of Toby Garrett, Oliver Shaw and Luke Pilkington won the Emmie Smith Trophy.

Barry Martin, Bradley Park, lead after the first round with a remarkable score of 67 off a handicap of 16 but a quadruple bogey on the 12th in a second round of 76 meant he just missed out.

The 12th hole is stroke index 18 on the card but with the wind from the opposite direction to the prevailing wind it played one of the hardest on the day. John Ambler and James Ward (1) had very rare birdies at this hole.

Toby scored very consistently but bogied the 3rd and 12th holes in both rounds. Chris was also very consistent except for a double bogey 14th in the 2nd round. Adam Crum (2), Dewsbury, also had two very solid rounds to win the 3rd amateur prize. An excellent 2nd round 70 gave Adrian Wallis (9), Crosland Heath, the 4th prize.

The fairways and greens were quite dry. The wind was quite strong and gusting from the East with frequent light rain showers. The conditions were very tough and the very few low scores were exceptional. The median score in each round was 77 and this discounts the no returns. The CSS for the 1st round was 72 and for the 2nd round it was 73.

Second Nine of only 28 shots wins the Outlane Union Fourball Qualifier

Gavin Atkin and Kevin Pendlebury produced a round that just got better and better the further they went as they won the Union Four ball Qualifier with a back nine of only 28 shots which gave them a 2 shot winning margin.

A seven on the seventh hole appeared to have scuppered their chances but from this point everything went right for them and a two on the tenth was followed with another two on the sixteenth which added up to being seven shots better than the 35 they went out in.

In second place was Dan Schofield and the in form Jarrad Hazelden who's 65 score could have been better had they not had a double bogey on the short 14th hole although their opening first nine of 32 was the best of the day.

The next four positions took some sorting out with four teams on a total of 66 and it was junior captain Michael Thomas with Kevin Sykes who had a back nine of 31 to pip Stuart West and another junior Tim Johnson with their inward score.

Guy Bayley and Mark Jackson were another couple who just got the better of Brent Ashton and Richard Gordino with a better back six to put them in the forefront.

Halifax and Huddersfield Union Four Ball Qualifier:

Gary Atkin / Kevin Pendlebury = 63

Dan Schofield / Jarrad Hazelden = 65

Kevin Sykes / Michael Thomas = 66

Stuart West / Tim Johnson = 66

Guy Bayley / Mark Jackson = 66

Brent Ashton / Richard Gordino = 66

The second of the two qualifying rounds of the Waller Cup was held at Bradley Hall on 28 April.
The field of 150 golfers had to contend with cold conditions, numerous heavy rain showers and even the very occasional bright sunshine.

The course had been closed for the previous 3 days due to heavy rain and thanks to the hard work put in by the greens staff, play was able to start on time at 7am. Many of the bunkers had been washed out but by the start of the event, all were back in play.

In Division 1 (15 and below) the winner was Norman Lansdell (15) with his nett score of 69, being closely followed by Fred Mayland with 70 and his playing partner, Carl Littlewood with 72. The final place going to James Fairhurst (scratch) with the best of the 73's.

The winner in Division 2 was the immediate past Rabbits Captain, Howard Brook with a nett 72 and joined his successor, Trevor Moroney, who had qualified in top place in the first qualifing round.
Glen Layfield came in second, followed by Peter Avis and a former winner of the event,Gordon Bedford.

Such was the difficulty for all competitiors that the C.S.S. became 'reduction only'.

The team that won the Outlane L.E.G.S. Trophy was thankful for a substitute when one of their players rang up to say he could not play in the 4 man competition (2 players score to count) and it was Tom Palmer Hoyes who had just turned up at the club hoping he could find a slot in any of the teams that was playing in the competition.

The result was that his now playing partners Ron Jarman , Nick Sutton and Chris Twigg were very grateful as he turned out to be a match winner with several scores he recorded were on the score card which added up to a winning total of 127 which included a 64 score on the first nine and a 63 on the back nine .

Whilst the winning team did not have any bad holes the team that came second had what you could call a double disaster with a 11 total and a 9 total on two holes when any pars would have been enough to have given them the win . Richard Jennings, Peter Lawton , Dan Schofield and Jarrad Hazelden team had a total of 129 which was made up of a 64 and 65 score.

The Trophy was presented to the club by the Lancashire Entertainers Golf Society (L.E.G.S.) for the free use of the course when they were raising money in their charity events for their members which included not only club acts and celebrities but footballers and cricketers as well as other sporting personalities.

The Outlane April Medal was something special for one of the members when he produced a round which will probably never be beaten as the new extended first tee will be demolished as the plans for the new machinery shed is going to be built on it.

The competition was also a qualifier for the Page Trophy for the Outlane members which was played over the longest course possible with the extended first tee.
Jarrad Hazeldens winning score had five bogies but he more than made up for his 69 gross round with an incredible SEVEN gross birdies which gave him a 1 shot win in the first division from in form Chris Rothery who's 65 nett was also a 1 shot margin from Matthew Alsop with Barry Armitage also another shot behind with a 67 nett.

The second division saw Kevin McGrath registering a 64 nett which included a 7 on the 17th hole but managed to keep in front from Steve Morgan who had a four hole par finish to take second place. One of the clubs up and coming juniors Tom Marsden had a tremendous start with a first nine score of 39 (only 4 over par) and this included a tremendous three on the long par 4 third when his ball stopped on the edge of the hole from his second shot.Steve Marshalls 67 nett took the fourth prize in the medal and they now qualify for the Page Trophy.
