Have you thought about what your company will do during a pandemic flu outbreak? Thought so. Half of surveyed companies are creating contingency plans, but a fourth of companies are, so far, doing nothing.

Can you answer these questions?

What can your company do to keep employees healthy during an outbreak?

Can you send sick employees home? Do you have to pay them?

Can you require a fit-for-duty physical?

What health information do we need to tell employees?

Should you supply masks/respirators? Do they work?

Will the seasonal flu shot protect against H1N1? Should we schedule flu shot clinics? How can we tell the difference between H1N1 and seasonal flu?

Does our health plan pay for antiviral drugs?

These questions and more are answered in a comprehensive special report available to you.

Here are the facts:

The costs of absenteeism are expected to be high.

A disease outbreak falls in the same category as a workplace threat such as a fire or tornado. You are required by law to do what you reasonably can to protect employees.

Sometimes information is the best preparation.

Social Media Tools such as Twitter, Swine Flu and emergency preparedness

I’ve been using twitter for some time now. I use #michaelaconley to keep up with things that I care about, health, technology, social media etc. We use #hpcareernet as a marketing tool, #hpcareernetjobs to give candidates another way to learn about whose hiring. Jennie, our Manager of Online Communications uses #recipe4success to pass along tips to new professionals and HPCareerNetwork community announcements such as our weekly Live Lunch & Learn events. Even our International community IDWellness has it’s own Twitter account to help our members around the world keep up with each other.

But, more important now is the use of social media tools like Twitter to rapidly disseminate vital news. The slide show below does a very nice job of explaining how well suited these tools are.

I’m sure irreverent comedian Carlos Mencia was trying out material doing three back-to-back shows at our local comedy club last night in Omaha. If it plays in the Heartland, it’ll play anywhere, right? But what a treat and what a lesson.

He’s an absolutely hilarious and smart crazy man, and my husband and I surely got a big dose of the healing power of laughter (my ribs still hurt, and what a pleasure to be in a smoke-free environment).

Mencia put our country’s financial crisis in a new light (not particularly the lighter side, but new perspective). His schtick, in its own way, was almost reassuring that we’re all in this together, and we can get through it. His underlying message, for the inebriated people there who missed it, was that we are Americans and we can change (for the better) if we pull together.

Of course, Mencia’s gift of colorful language precludes me from even paraphrasing his commentary on bailout funds, AIG, mortgage loans, and people who signed mortgage contracts (”read the bleeping contract”), but suffice to say it was fun to get away from the dreary newspaper, turn off the cable news chatter, and laugh.

In the spirit of coming together and helping each other, my company has created a free e-letter for you. Here comes the shameless plug. No, not really.

My company provides health news you can use for your corporate intranet and in-house publications, by paid subscription. As a free download, we have created a 6-page PDF called Make ends meet–an e-letter compilation of the best stories over the past few months all targeted to employees during tough economic times.

Stories focus on how to bounce back, 2 dozen ways to trim your health care costs, crisis management when money matters, and how to stress less when “ticker” shock hits. Email me at publisher@health-eheadlines.com for this free e-letter. Use it. Email it to your employees. Tell colleagues to email us for a copy (and to read/subscribe to the weekly blog here on HPCareerNetwork’s Industry Buzz).

There may not be a free lunch (yet), but there is free health information. It’s not as funny as Carlos Mencia, but I am convinced that knowledge (and laughter) is powerful medicine.
