We are so happy to announce that we are featured in the Container Gardens 2013 Magazine! The Container Gardens Magazine is a nationwide publication, consisting mostly of pictures from the East and West Coasts. We are proud to be the only greenhouse featured out of the midwest!! We were chosen based on our unique container gardening designs. If you are interested in seeing the pictures featured in the magazine checkout our Facebook page. At Howell’s, we take pride in our specialized container gardens and welcome you to bring in your containers for a custom design. We also have planters and hanging baskets ready for you to take home today.

Spring is in the air at Howells

The robins have returned to the farm, the tulips are beginning to peek through the flower beds, and baby goats are arriving daily. True signs that Spring has arrived at Howells! The greenhouses are full of beautiful annuals and vegetables, and the perennials are arriving next week. We welcome you to visit our greenhouses and garden center to gather your planting needs. We again this year will be offering seeds form Seed Savor, vegetable transplants, asparagus crowns. seed potatoes, onion sets and rhubarb plants.
Patti and Erin have been busy in the greenhouse and are excited about the flowers that are being offered this season! Patti says “I love the Begonia’s this year; we have new varieties of flowering and foliage begonias, Jam & Jelly Vinca and much more”. We also have five new varieties of Irises, new varieties of Hosta’s, new colors of Calla Lilies, along with many perennials and annuals. We have large selection of terrariums and fairy gardens; we will be offering “Itty Bitty” plants for fairy gardens and terrariums along with fairy accessories. At Howells we take pride in our specialized container gardens. We welcome you to bring in your containers for a custom design.
I have been busy finishing the High Tunnel to fill with fresh produce. It will enable us to start planting a month early. We will have plenty of fresh vegetables and flowers for Farmers Market, the Gift shop and our New Farm Stand. We will be offering the following: tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, peas, beans, spinach, cabbage, broccoli, cucumbers, onions, radishes, potatoes, squash, and melons.

Fall Fun Starts September 17th

Howell’s starts its Fall Fun September 17th. Wagon rides to the corn maze start, also concessions open, along with the play area. The pumpkin patch will open October 1st. Our hours are 9am to 6pm everyday.

General Admission is $7.00 per person and it includes: wagon ride, play area, corn maze, and pedal go-karts. We will have fall produce and mums available.

Great weekend out at the farm, thanks to all who came out! Weather looks great for next weekend, so make plans to join us next weekend too. The Covered Bridge Festival will also be going on in Winterset next weekend; we are right on your way to or from the festival. Also, don’t forget, we are open during the week, so if your little ones have early dismissals or fall break during the week, come on out for a tractor ride to the patch or to feed the goats at the petting zoo. Looking forward to seeing you!

We will be at the West Glen Farmers Market in West Des Moines tomorrow from 10-2! Come find us right in front of Caribou Coffee. We will have some fresh cut flowers as well as flowering hanging baskets. Hope the weather cooperates!
