Yeah, this is a familiar script.

First it happened to the Orlando Magic over the course of the 2011-12 season, now one of the most iconic franchises in all of sports is dealing with the same “Dwightmare”.

Dwight Howard is once again playing the role of supermodel chick and the Los Angeles Lakers are reduced to the clingy, simp boyfriend watching as he flirts with the possibility of leaving L.A. for Houston or Dallas.

Unlike Orlando however, the Lakers are at significant risk of not getting anything in return for their one year rental of Dwight Howard. Magic GM Rob Hennigan was criticized by some for what appeared to be an underwhelming haul in return for Howard but he seems to have been vindicated for the time being.

The emergence of Nikola Vucevic and Moe Harkless as solid pieces towards Orlando’s future along with the peace of mind of not dealing with the Dwightmare are a pleasant reality right about now.

This was a frustrating a year in Los Angeles for all parties involved, Dwight Howard, the team and the fans, many of whom have turned apathetic and even vitriolic towards the seven time All-Star.

As it stands, according to ESPN’s Chris Broussard it is unlikely that Dwight will return to the Lakers. There are multiple perspectives that can be taken in assessing the motives behind a decision that should be the biggest of Howard’s career.
