If you are a regular reader of my blog perhaps you have noticed that once again I have been slightly absent from regular posting, to say the least! And while I hope Monika provides you with enough information to digest and act upon I wanted to provide a quick explanation…

While I can’t provide full details just yet… for multiple reasons, I had to work over last month on checking, configuring, testing and now migrating bulk of my sites, blogs and business sites to a new host that would allow me create a more controlled, stable and easily expandable environment.

MediaTemple VE server was our final choice as it provided us with all the features we needed and given our technical background was a fairly logical jump. One of the biggest switches was to migrate all out sites, scripts, payment processing, blogs, etc to a new platform: Nginx+FastCGI

Incredible combination that is currently supported this blog and many other thing. Unfortunately migration is not complete yet, so I will be absent a bit more but perhaps I will share the process to those technically inclined to duplicate, if there is enough interest.

But let’s not worry about the usability of these sites for the moment, let’s look at how good the ads on your AdSense sites actually are…

Powered by Content

Whether you know this, or not, your Adsense ads are powered by the content that is on your pages. Mainly the stuff that precedes the ad, and then some of the stuff below it.

If your ads are untargeted they will not match the topic of your site, nor will they pay much per click. Chances are you will get smart priced too (when you get 3 cent clicks or less).

You can trigger the right ads with the right words, based on your keyword of course. Use h1, h2, and h3 tags near your ads, bold the keyword (once is enough) and make sure your content matches the actual URL.  Adsense is much like a pair of shoes, if the size is right, it fits snug like a bug, if it ain’t, your content ads are all over the show, mis-matched, un-targeted and rubbish.

Shoot for the Top

When considering an Adsense site, you should aim for the biggest possible income you can make. Yes, the competition is ragging among these highly competitive keywords, but hey, if you do your SEO right, and build some quality links then it will pay out handsomely in the end. Some niches that come to mind are:

• Credit
• Debt
• Insurance
• Legal
• Loans

The list goes on and on actually. You can dig into any decent paying niche and discover lesser known, but often better-paying ads in the process. When I do my research I try and stick with keywords that pay at least $2 per click. Why?

Because generally you get paid about 25 percent of the CPC by Google, often even less, the rest goes to them and the Adwords advertiser who’s paying for the ad. Since it takes work to build these sites, even if they’re small in comparison to a larger authority site I’d like to get paid for my efforts. Choosing good-paying keywords is one of those insurances. In case you wonder, the others are SEO (on-page) and links.

Go Local

The best money can be had with local ads, think “Mesopotamia lawyer in Chicago,” or “dental surgeon in New York.” The competition for these keywords are no doubt huge, but who says you have to stick with the obvious? You don’t! Try to think outside the box when targeting Adsense sites and make sure your content is highly optimized.

The Importance of Ad Placement

Now you’ve got a highly optimize Adsense site it’s time to place the ad in the right position. Since most readers skim websites you only have a few seconds to get the click. Getting the click is key in driving Adsense revenue, but having said this, you also want to inform people with quality content.

In my humble opinion the best place for ads is underneath your title, but before the actual content. I usually wrap the content around the ad to make it more neat. The ad has got to be above the fold. For some niches, the left hand sidebar also works well, while for others a sub header with link ads do the trick.

In the end you can never say one size fits all. The success of your Adsense sites really lies in the combination of picking a good niche (keyword), optimizing the site for search engines (very important to get the top-paying clicks), and positioning your ads in the right spot.

The best way to find out is by split-testing your ads:

• Test for keyword in content
• Test for ad position
• Test for keyword itself
• Test for how many ads you show on one page (remember to stick within the legal allowance from Google’s terms.

If you are a regular reader of Alex’s Internet marketing blog you might have seen my recent post about getting my PayPal account phished due to a tabnabbing attack. I’m happy to report that my account access has been fully restored after having verified my identity. The thieves didn’t get far, thanks to my trusted Password Manager. If it weren’t for me using a software that autofills my logins securely I don’t know whether I would have been so lucky…

Why You Need a Password Managing Software

In view of the consistent threats that accompany you while browsing the Internet it makes sense to do whatever you can to keep your computer data safe. The things you don’t want to deal with are harmful viruses, spyware, or a phishing attack. Getting your data stolen or compromised is never fun, nor is it usually easy to remedy if you are a technophobe.

I think it goes without saying that you should keep your computer (and your data) protected with a good antivirus suite at all times. Failing to do so will cost you more than the cost of the software itself if your machine does get compromised.

Roboform is a great password manager. What I really like about it is the fact that you can get the Roboform2Go version for your thumb drive. You simply plug the USB drive into any host computer and your passwords and accounts will be readily available anywhere in the world.

Best of all, from what I know, the software doesn’t leave any traces on the host machine, meaning your data won’t be stolen by the owner of the computer after you have left.

You can get Roboform for free (trial version) to see whether you like it before you buy. For nomads like myself, the Roboform2Go is ideal, cause it’s light and portable. If you own several computers you can synchronize all of your Roboform software installs with the help of Roboform Online. It’s fast, relatively easy to use and cost-effective.

1Password – Another Nifty Tool

Another popular favorite of online marketers is 1Password. Their latest version is Snow Leopard (Mac) compatible. Something Roboform needs to address if they want to stay in the game. You can use Roboform on a Mac with their online bookmarklet, but it’s more cumbersome to use and slower – plus a lot more annoying.

• SurfSecret KeyPad
• Password Manager XP
• Aurora Password Manager
• Handy Password

This selection of password managers should get you on the right track. I’m pretty much sold on Roboform since I’m already familiar with their suite of software. If you can, start with a trial version of the software you like best and then move to the paid version if you like it.

I’ve been using both WordPress and XSitePro for a long while now and have come to love both a applications for various reasons. However, in the last year I’ve really fallen in love with XSitePro because of the following reasons …

It’s fast

I can build a new 5 page website in as little as 30 minutes with the software. Granted, I will need to have my content already written and lined up, but thanks to the software’s multi-page creation feature I can launch a new Adsense or affiliate site in less than one hour.

While WordPress is relatively fast to work with it does take me longer to build and launch a new site, even with the content already written, because I have to change/activate permalinks, plugins, widgets, set up options and more.

It’s got great inbuilt SEO tools

The inbuilt SEO rating of XSitePro lets me see within seconds whether my site is built with the correct search engine optimization score. WordPress can be optimized for SEO as well with the help of plugins and the right permalink structure, but it takes longer.

Inserting ads and codes is easy

If you want to insert, or change code in your XSitePro site it’s easy easy as to use the inbuilt features. It virtually takes seconds to ad a new Adsense ad to your pages site wide, or change the channel. The same applies to other code such as a adding an exit splash code, tracking stats, and more. With WordPress you have to either use a plugin, or go directly to your site’s editor and hack the code, depending on the theme you use.

Publishing is easy and fast

With XSitePro I can publish a site directly from within the software itself, there is no need to use an external FTP software, or go into the server itself. Except for adding an addon domain of course.

Backups are easy

I’ve been immensely grateful to the ease of which I can backup my entire XSitePro collection of sites when I lost my PC to a nasty bug last year. Luckily I had the entire database backed up to a thumb drive. When I got the PC fixed I re-installed the software to the machine with a few clicks, it took less then 2 minutes!

WordPress offers an increasing array of backup solutions these days. If you use software like BackupBuddy it is relatively easy to do a backup and re-install, however, you still have to visit all of your sites individually to keep them backed up, unless you use MU.

Great features to boost the performance

XSitePro offers an increasing range of extra features to help with performance. Granted, WordPress does this as well. Don’t get me wrong, I love both software for their very own strength, but overall I tend to use XSitePro more and more because most of my sites built on the software rank very high on Google (some of them are in VERY competitive markets).

When to use XSitePro and when to use WordPress

That’s entirely up to you. I’ve heard people say that XsitePro is great for fast sites, while WP is best for authority sites. But after ranking a few authority sites in relative competitive markets on XSitePro I tend to go with both, regardless. These days I choose XSitePro more and more because it is a huge time saver for me and because I’m still seeing the results I want, why should I not?

Possible downsides to users

One of the negatives of XSitePro is the cost. Not everyone can afford the software, especially when they start out with no money to spare. However, my personal belief has always been that in order to make money you first have to spend some.

WordPress out of the box is free. Yes you can spend money for plugins and themes, but you don’t have to.

Today the unexpected happened; I was the victim of a PayPal phishing attack, even so I claim to be one hell of a smart cookie with web security. And before you ask, no, I didn’t click on a link in an email. I’m not THAT stupid. What I did instead is to type the URL into my browser by hand, and stupidly enough I never included the https:// bit. Call me slack, call me silly, but that’s what happened.

I then went to get some email address to pay one of my writers, and when I came back to the PayPal tab I was exposed to a tabnabbing attack. I never knew that something like this existed, and after I realized I got done I found the above article at Mashable. Scary, scary stuff this is.

The dangers of not using https:// before the domain

I realized soon enough that something was indeed phishy when I was suddenly facing a new PayPal page with the URL www.paypal-business.com or some similar sub domain. It had all the right looks, the right logos. I would have never realized that it was a phishing attempt except I clicked their security thingy in the broswer and was told it was from PayPal Singapore. What the…

PayPal is definitely NOT beaming their magic around the world from Singapore now do they?

By trying to use the login shortcut and leaving out the https:// bit before the domain name I somehow got misdirected to a phisher. Beats me how, but that’s what happened. To put a long story short I’m now experiencing limited account access. I can can see my account overview, but that’s about it. I did change my passwords and security questions right after the attempt. In fact, PayPal got wind of it somehow and prompted me to do this. I double-checked the URL before I went ahead and it seems I was dealing with the REAL PayPal on the second attempt. Lucky for me I’ve switched to sms login as an added security not so long ago.

I’d hate to think of what would have happened had i not had this extra security measure in place. Right now I can’t pay anyone money, I can’t make a bank transfer, nor can I request money at this stage. But having said this, I still have my money in the account. This made me realize how exposed we are when we rely on PayPal as the main merchant of choice.

Getting back to business as usual

To get my account fully functional I now need to verify it.  Needless to say I’m not happy about this at all. I’m not even sure if there are alternatives to PayPal for Aussie service providers? The trouble is that most Internet marketers are so used to using PayPal that trying to get paid with another merchant has got to be a nightmare in itself, or is it?

I would certainly appreciate any insights from you if you think you can point me to a great alternative. I don’t mind paying monthly fees for a good merchant if it allows me to get paid via PayPal from clients around the world.

How to protect yourself from phishing attempts

There are some measure you can take to avoid this from happening to you:

• Never click on any hyperlinks from within an email. If your bank sends you an email, it is likely a phishing attempt. To find out for sure, open a new tab, type the full secure URL of your bank (including the https:// and see whether your account was really stolen, as was claimed in the email.
• Always use the secure login URL if you are trying to access sensitive accounts. Don’t follow suit with my bad example.
• Use secure password managers
• Never use your password twice online. Always generate complicated strings of letters, numbers and symbols.
• Keep your computer’s software up-to-date.
• Use a good anti virus/security suite to browse the Internet.
• Don’t believe a word in the Nigerian prince’s email when he offers you a cool million for helping him to unlock his heritage.
• Check website security seals if you suspect foul play.
• Stay alert when browsing the Internet.

What drives you to churn out blog post after blog post without traffic, sales and people commenting? With the rise of meta blogs (those are make money blogs for the uninitiated) came the idea that having a blog must be cool. Thousands upon thousands of people come online with the idea of wanting to make it big with their blog, then somewhere along the way they lose their Mojo.

I see it happen all the time. Heck, I stopped counting the number of clients who’ve ordered a WordPress blog package from me and then one month later they have packed up shop for good – because they stopped caring for their blog. They among thousands of others have also lost their Mojo. Perhaps they NEVER even had it – it was just a flutter of inspiration that had them belief that blogging was the cool thing to do.

Blogging is serious business for some, fun for others

Before you even join the growing number of failed bloggers do yourself a favor and ask yourself “why.” Why do you feel the urge to start a blog? Are you doing this for fun, or business?

The answers will guide you to a better start. Once you can clearly define your blogging purpose it will be easier to come up with a schedule. Trust me on this.

Mojo madness

When your Mojo is in prime blogging mode you will churn out post after post, almost on autopilot. You’ll feel like a freaking robot on steroids, and no amount of distraction can get the better of you. This is blogging done at its best. In order to protect that state of mind you need to nourish it, feed it with good input. Do not make the mistake of tempting your Mojo with “cyber fast food” because that would be committing blogging suicide.

Magnetic blogging

Magnetic blogging is done with the help of your primed-for-action Mojo. If you want to keep your blog fun, interesting to read, informative, and entertaining you need to be able to stand out from the masses of other blogs on the Internet. Get creative, fire up your Mojo and get blogging.

I have to admit, I have a Love/Hate relationship with spammers on my blog:

• I Hate the time and effort that goes to waste to deal with them
• I Love the inspiration they provide me with to constantly evolve the methods of dealing with them and also Content I create on the topic

It seems that no matter how solid of a protection we put in place – it only works for a while and then we begin to see an influx of comments filled with bunch of BS that supposed to make me “feel good and approve their crap”.

Think again!

I consider comment spam a “low level” attack on my blog, as I have described in my post Triple “P” Of Total WordPress Security. While there is still quite a bit of Spam Bot activity – I see an ever increasing amount of human generated spam.

It seems that outsourcing comment spam becomes quite popular option and it is no longer limited to  Internet Marketing niche and standard adult sites and pills, as I seen it before. I see it now used for just about anything that could be sold on internet and every time I look up the IP range where this comment comes from – it clearly indicates third world countries where labor is cheap.

And So I say, using the variation of well known phrase:

To me this is a battle,  it is personal and I’m getting quite good and quick on pushing that “SPAM” button. I will continue to improve the automation and share it with my readers to help others beat your idiotic efforts.

Are you looking to improve your copywriting skills? Perhaps you are just starting out, or else you’ve been in the industry for some time. For some reasons your muse keeps getting stuck. Whatever you try just doesn’t seem to work and no amount of pen sharpening activity brings you the desired result – hard-hitting copy.

Don’t worry, you are not alone. Like many, I certainly have my struggling days too, and when I do it is usually because of unwanted distractions, or because I just can’t get into the flow.

Copywriting pros share a common skill in how they craft their sales letters. If you are anything like me then you probably own a nice swipe file of the best copywriting headlines ever written.

There is certain mystery in trying to uncover the reasons behind a great headline, but once you dig right into the content you’ll soon understand the structure and makeup of such a site.

To help you move on the following tips might help.

Headline 101

The headline of a salespage copy is THE most important aspect of it. It is about 80 percent of the work. If done right, your story/letter will be the icing on the cake to make your prospect reach for his/her credit card.

You should therefore spend most of your creative energy on crafting a killer headline. I usually start out by writing down dozens of headlines after getting some inspiration from the real pros. I never copy a headline word for word. I think that would be stealing. I much prefer to alter the copy to fit the purpose. There are literally thousands of words and synonyms you can apply to just about any niche. The result is sizzling copy.

Storytelling

Experienced copywriters are GREAT storytellers. They can lead you from their own experience with the product to being a true convert by the time you’ve reached the “buy now” button. It’s a gift that is rarely inborn, but needs honing to a fine art over many years.

Call to action

Without a definite call to action you won’t write hard-hitting, converting copy. You have to tell the reader what to do next. A lot of people assume that they already know. I’ll let you in on a little (secret).

They don’t

People are like herds of cattle, they need to be driven down the path. Unless your [pen] doesn’t tell them what to do they will simply click out, having lost you a potential sale.

You can craft several call to action links into your salesletter. Don’t assume everyone will scroll all the way to the bottom because your copy is so great. Give people the opportunity to act beforehand.

PS/PPS

Post scripts and post post scripts are often used to negate your last objections to the sale with the help of cleverly placed guarantees, promises and special offers. By creating urgency salesletters tempt you to buy now, before the price goes up, etc.

This part of the salescopy is responsible for a fair amount of sales and should not be underestimated by copywriters.

When you collaborate with others on the Internet it can quickly become a frustrating experience when some of the people don’t have access to the same tools. Trying to match a Word doc to Google Docs is a nightmare. Officially it’s as simple as uploading Word into Docs. In reality doing so opens a whole can of formatting worms, one you’d rather not deal with if time is of the essence.

The timeless issue with lack of time

Time is ALWAYS of the essence when we do business online. It’s so easy to let yourself get distracted with chat, email, and other non-essential business tasks. I guess that most entrepreneurs suffer from an unstructured work day. We tend to revel in a constant state of “busyness” while nothing concrete gets done.

Ask yourself this – Can you finish each working day knowing you’ve been at your most productive that day?

Become a savvy collaborator

Go back to basics: If you work with a team of collaborators then the first step you all have to take is one that lets you face in the same direction. In practical terms this means you need to use the same tools, access the same software and platforms to share your work. When the whole team is familiar with the tools the whole process of sharing becomes easier and more fun. Plus, you will save a ton of time trying to become acquainted with unfamiliar software and processes.

Minimize unnecessary conversation: There is a time and place for meaningless social chat, and then there is a time for business. If you spend your days surfing forums, chatting with others and emailing jokes, then please don’t be surprised if your business sucks. In order to build a business you actually have to lay stone upon stone. Each stone represents a day of work during which you need to stay focused on your tasks.

It’s easy to lose focus with unnecessary distractions. There is a high change that we are all guilty of doing this from time to time. The difference between the winners and the losers lies in the frequency in which we give in to the distractions.

Centralize task management: Any collaboration management should focus on centralizing the handling and management of tasks. Whether you choose to use Google Docs, activeCollab, Box.net, or a host of other groovy online collaboration tools, it’s important to settle on the same set of tools for all people involved.

Make life easier with cloud sharing: Web-based tools are far easier to handle and manage when you are a frequent traveler trying to collaborate with others. While there are certain risks to storing your information online so are risks while you cross the road to grab your steaming mug of coffee in the early morning. Fact is that there are risks in anything, if you want to win, you have to step out of your comfort zone at some time or another.

The essence of training: I can’t stress enough how important training is when you handle a growing team of people. I urge you to use video training (Jing), strict guidelines, samples, guides, etc. Collaboration becomes child’s play when you show your team EXACTLY what is expected of them. It leaves little room for error and ambiguity.

Enforce structure: Every home needs a structure to stop it from falling down. The same applies to a business. Unless you define your business with clear guidelines, and make these known to your team you can never expect the to pull the same strings you do. If you manage a group of people by means of collaboration you need to pay the same attention to structure.

Free tools vs paid: I’m a sucker for using free tools when they serve their purpose and are GOOD. Today you can find an increasing amount of free tools that simplify collaboration with your team. Some people will advocate that using free invites problems, but I beg to differ. Yes, some free platforms will undoubtedly disappear over time, but then so will paid-for platforms.

As long as you use tools that serve the purpose of your collaboration requirements you will always have plenty of access to both free, and paid options.
