2010 Winter storm hit South East, specifically Virginia Beach with a very expected consequences:

• Public school system shut down and my son got himself extra couple days off (so far..)
• Entire region in panic mode
• Roads are horrible since nobody is ever prepared for the snow

But perhaps best of all and my favorite – people got to enjoy the snow! It will be a short lived fun for sure since the temperatures are already going into plus category and snow will melt – right now it is a blast for kids!

Here are a few pictures I took right outside the house…

1. That is me caught by my wife while getting some of the snow off the driveway, right in the middle of the first day with snow storm still going…

2. A rare view of the street cover in snow:

This is the first time we got so much snow since 2004 when we had a similar storm and last time it lasted couple weeks. I wonder how long it will be this time…

I do know one thing for sure – my kids LOVE the opportunity to play in the snow and little one seeing the snow for the first time.

This might sound strange coming from me, considering that I make my online living taking full advantage of the capabilities offered by WordPress and yet, here is my statement:

You Should NEVER Use WordPress For Membership Management!

On last webinar for Expert WordPress members I have shared this opinion and received quite a feedback, which is greatly appreciated. I know that my statement goes against what many other people are currently teaching but I have very good reasons!

Reasons I will share in this blog post and let you decide if my opinion makes sense or not, it is YOUR ONLINE BUSINESS after all!

First allow me to repeat the obvious…

I love WordPress and I think as Content Management System it simply has no equals when it comes to functionality, simplicity, extendability and customization options!

WordPress, thanks to its modular design and huge support by community, developers and designers has a solution that can be applied to pretty much any kind of need to present content!

WordPress is constantly developing and enhanced in functionality, new plugins to extend its ability are introduced, mostly free and some are with a price tag and this is one of the reasons I will recommend to anyone reading this post

Do Not Use WordPress For Paid Memberships

Anytime we use paid membership, we build business. Business that we rely on to provide us with a steady flow of income we can depend on and build upon. But as part of running a membership business model we commit to our customers to provide them with secure access to our site and to ensure their private information stored within our membership system doesn’t get into hands of hackers!

We Are Obligated To Do All In Our Power To Protect Our Customers!

And here is why I think WordPress is a bad fit for this model…

Membership Management functionality currently provided to WordPress via several plugins. Some are commercial and some are free but it doesn’t matter which one you will choose to use as they all share one big flaw – their dependency on the core of WordPress!

• By themselves they will not function and same goes the WordPress core – without one of these plugins you can’t have paid membership! This is fact #1!

• WordPress is constantly evolving and new versions are released that sometimes make plugins incompatible with latest version and you either have to wait upgrading to latest WordPress core version until plugin is updated to be fully operational with it or you have to look for new plugin to replace functionality, especially true with free plugins. This is fact #2.

• WordPress is Open Source and its code is constantly under scrutiny not only by the good guys but also by people who are looking for a way to compromise your site. If you have been blogging for a while I’m sure you have seen those WordPress security releases that simply HAVE TO BE doneASAP in order to avoid being hacked, as exploit is in the wild and actively used by bad guys. This is fact #3

Now imagine this scenario:

You have a WordPress blog used to manage membership system. You have several hundred customers paying on monthly bases (or whatever schedule you use). As any WordPress blog you have several plugins to add functionality for SEO at the very least and obviously at least one plugin that is responsible for turning your blog into membership system.

Now imagine that WordPress core team just released a security upgrade that have to be applied ASAP or your blog can be compromised and hacker can take control over every aspect of it, including FULL ACCESS to your customers information.

You quickly contact support of the developer who created the plugin you use for Membership Management before jumping into upgrade, as you have to ensure that it will continue to work with new version only to learn that he is taking romantic vacation on secluded island somewhere in Fiji and will not be back for next couple weeks…

What Do You Do?

Do you upgrade the WordPress core, as you should, to protect your blog and your customer data and risk that your membership management portion stops working and no support for it will be available for a while?

Or do you continue using insecure version of the blog praying that it doesn’t become a target for attack until plugin is compatible with it, as you simply can’t afford loosing income?

What if you actually did what you should and have upgraded and your membership plugin is now broken, your customer support swamped with complains from customers and you know that you will not be able to fix the problem for next 2 weeks, while developer enjoying the vacation?

Which scenario fits you better?

I know those are some extreme scenarios but not uncommon! I know there are always solution to any problem and you can actually outsource fixing the plugin in scenario above but I personally prefer that my membership script is separate and with dedicated support!

If you are planning to start membership site I highly recommend you avoid doing it with WordPress! There are plenty of scripts that will provide you with all the functionality you need – securely and safely!

I personally use and recommend either Launch Formula Marketing or Easy Member Pro. Each one is great at what it does and comes at different price points. EMP is actually one that would be great fit for many!

After receiving a few emails through contact form I figured I better write a quick post on Why I haven’t posted in a while.

No! I do not plan to retire and I have every intention to continue providing information, same as I did before. Reason for my absence and lack of posting is very simple…

I put my house on the market right before the Christmas, got it under contract right after New Year and now I’m quite busy dealing with all the things that has to be done since house was FSBO and I’m responsible for handling the seller part.

Not to mention that I still don’t have a place to move my family to Needless to say that my wife is slightly anxious and I spend a lot of time looking at properties and concentrating on family but I will be back in full swing once the dust settles.

As expected WordPress 2.9 have been released on December 18 and while this version  is not a security release, it contains quite a few bug fixes as well as enhancements! Couple most notable features added to latest version are:

• Basic image editing capabilities – love it for quick edits!
• Ability to add video to WordPress blog post by simply specifying URL to the video instead of copying / pasting code. Support for most common services is included

I also like the new option to Auto-Optimize database by simply adding one line to your wp-config.php file and my partner and I are testing it right now to perhaps make it part of the next package release of Expert WordPress. There are quite a few more enhancements you should read about on official blog but right now I want to talk about solving a problem with one, very popular plugin – Simple Tags. Until author releases next version of plugin fully compatible with WordPress 2.9 – here is a work around for you…

Problem comes from hard coding within the plugin that checks version of the WordPress core and errors out simply because it doesn’t mention 2.9.

If you are planning to upgrade to WordPress 2.9 and you should and using Simple Tags plugin, simply follow these steps to make it compatible…

1. Navigate to Plugins-> Editor in your WordPress admin

2. In “Select plugin to edit” drop down option on right hand side select “Simple Tags” and click Select:

simple-tags.php file should open for editing by default

3.  Find this line near the top of the file:

if ( strpos($wp_version, '2.7') !== false || strpos($wp_version, '2.8') !== false) {

And add to it 2.9 as a version option:

if ( strpos($wp_version, '2.7') !== false || strpos($wp_version, '2.8') !== false || strpos($wp_version, '2.9') !== false ) {

4. Save the file!

This is it! Now your plugin will not give you any problems!

Oh, Yeah! I said it!

Your eyes are not deceiving you because I do believe that Comment Spammers are directly encouraged by bloggers driven by a desperation to get activity on their blogs.

I have no plans to lay the blame here but instead encourage those just starting with the wonderful form of online publishing that blogging has become to stay strong and resist the urge to approve those few first comments on your new, shiny blog.

I know exactly how it feels when you labor on idea, you do the research, you work hard to create content that you KNOW worth the attention and yet…

Nobody comes, or what is even worse – people do come but don’t participate!

No comments left on your blog and you left to wonder if what you have created is even provides the value you thought it does. This is where the dangerous zone begins.

Since you have put some much work into your content – it will begin to score well with Search Engines and comment spammers often are some of the first people to recognize it. They swarm a new blog producing high quality unique content and start leaving crap comments just to get their links on your pages.

They know that in time – your content will give them benefits of quality links to their spam sites!

And I also know how hard it might be to send that VERY FIRST comment on your blog into spam folder, where it belongs! After all, it’s just one… right?

Wrong!

Once your blog is identified as accepting spam – you will get more, a lot more and can actually hurt your blog overall quite badly as linking out to bad sites can lead to penalty by Google.

How To You Get More Participation On New Blog?

There are several things you can do to get more comments on your blog, no matter how new it i, as long as your content is good. People love sharing opinion – you just have to give them a reason!

But before you do anything else – you need to create a clear Commenting Policy. I’m not going to go into details as I have previously shared how in this post – Create Clear Comment Policy To Avoid Spam.

Once that in place – you have several options to consider and one of the most important is How Do You Reward Commenters who take the time to take part on your blog, interact with you and with other readers?

I’m a HUGE advocate of rewarding people with quality links for the time they took out of their life to contribute to my content and I do using several plugins, which I can recommend:

• LuciaLinkyLove - allows me to provide DoFollow links to comments who have 3 or more approved comments on my blog. I provided direct link to plugin file but developer stopped supporting it, although in my experience it works just fine with latest versions of WP. If you discover that link no longer works – search for other DoFollow plugins in Wordpress Repository.
• CommentLuv – this one gives people links to their latest blog posts. I have covered it step-by-step in my previous post and if you are interested to learn – read details about it in CommentLuv Plus DoFollow Equal Unlimited Link Love post.
• Comment Relish – this is a superb little plugin that allows you to send a thank you email to a first time commenter on your blog. Even though it is an automated reply if you do proper customization – it doesn’t have to be a dry message, it can be fairly personal! Great plugin to have on your blog to encourage people to return and comment again!

There are a few more plugins you can use but those 3 I think should give you the base functionality to reward commenters and now you only have one thing left to do…

Get People To Comment On Your Blog!

Hmmm, seems like we are back to square one, huh?

Well, not really, because now your blog is READY TO REWARD people for taking the time to provide valuable comment and you just have to let them know about it. While doing proper on-page SEO is a MUST – for a new blog it might not generate the results you are expecting.

But this is where  the power of social networks comes into play! I know many people disregard Social Networks traffic as useless and I have to disagree with that statement. I have always strongly believed that matching traffic type to the action you need is crucial for a traffic to be effective.

Socail Networks exist for one main reason – people want to interact!

And what does your blog need? Comments, interaction! Seems like a perfect fit to me and all you have to do is bring the people from social networks to your blog pages!

Twitter and Facebook couple of the most obvious choices and if you don’t spam them – you can get people to come and participate. I think Twitter is especially effective. In fact I personally use it and describe how in my free report “Tweet Your Blog”

But you can go beyond automation and actually actively engage into conversation within social network and get a LOT more traffic from it. I have written one os the strategies you can use in How To Turn TweetDeck Into Blogging Inspiration – it is a VERY direct way to get people interested into what you have to say and I guarantee, if you do it effectively – you will see new comments

Hardest Part is to get commenting started on your blog but once you get few – power of Social Proof takes over and when people see that others are commenting, participating – they will as well. It is incredible on how seeding a few first comments can help you boost overall participation!

But the reality is – selling your own info product is most profitable option you can implement to get the most out of Niche. PLR does have a few minuses, quality of the content is sometimes one of the factors and accuracy of the information within is another one. But if you are already an expert in the Niche or willing to learn enough to be able to share valuable information – It Is Only To Your Advantage!

All you need to do is edit the eBook with Private Label Rights, correct any information that requires correction, add your own “Expert Insight” and package it for sale! You are already provided with a sales materials and quite often some additional promotional items.

How To Get More Traffic To Your Blog By Getting Rid Of Bloat!

Page load speed is extremely important for your blog not only because it allows your blog to be indexed faster by search engines but also because it helps you retain visitors.

People arrive to your blog pages from multiple sources and often searching for the solutions to their problems. Needless to say that if your page takes its sweet time to load – you might loose the person whose attention span is about as long as a toddler.

Present Your Content as fast as possible – reduce bounce rate and turn visitors into readers! And here are few tips that should help you….

I have previously wrote about blog optimization strategies I use and you can read about them in my posts:

…I do now use WP-Super-Cache plugin on all my blogs, which is a change to what I describe in the first guide provided. Mainly because plugin has become a lot more compatible with others and also much improved. I recommend you do same.

Install WP-Super-Cache To Speed Page Load

As I mentioned above  plugin now performs like a champ and as you traffic continue to grow – it can become a life saver for you, especially if you are on shared hosting.

If you don’t have the plugin yet – simply go to your Blog Admin interface and navigate to Plugins ->Add New.

Do a search for Term: WP Super Cache and once you find it – click to install.

Activate and configure plugin. Default settings should work for most of the blogs but please visit the plugin settings page and double check everything.

Get Rid Of Deactivated Plugins

As we use our blogs, we continue to add new plugins looking to add functionality and gain an edge over competition. Often those plugins simply become deactivated and left on your blog as unneeded.

But did you know that WordPress takes a look an evaluates EACH plugin, active or not, when pages are loaded?

As long as plugin files are present within wp-content/plugins directory it will be evaluated by the blog core to see if its functions need to be processed. This Adds Time to Each Page Load!

It might be just a few microseconds but when you have a whole pile of plugins that are no longer used and yet present – this can drastically impact page load speed!

You see that option I highlighted above? Use it for ALL plugins that have no use on your blog! You might be amazed on how responsive your blog becomes if you have a few of them!

Evaluate Functionality Provided By Plugins – Get Rid Of Duplicates

This one is unfortunately very common problem and I have seen it time and time again. Few factors contribute to it:

• Our desire to add extra functionality or enhance existing
• Developers creating plugins that become multi-functional
• Lack of knowledge…

And what I’m talking about here is when a blog has two or sometimes even more plugins doing exactly same thing! Since I never tested it and have no plans to do so – I can’t say if having All-In-One-SEO and HeadSpace 2 plugins at same has any impact on your Search Engine position or not but having two plugins performing essentially same function on your blog is definitely impacting your performance.

But it becomes even worse when I see even more plugins added to ADD to whatever the 2 above are already doing. And the problem I mention above is not limited to SEO functionality only, as I have seen it time and time again on great many blogs.

While sometimes you simply can’t overcome the problem because plugin you MUST have adds some functionality you didn’t ask for, due to developer trying to create a “swiss army knife” style plugin that does it all, you can carefully evaluate what you have.

What I’m about to describe will take a bit of time but in return you might be rewarded with leaner, faster loading blog!

1. Login into your blog admin and navigate to Plugins section
2. Write down each plugin you have installed and functionality it provides. You might have to visit developer site to get full details.
3. Cross reference all the functionality you have as result from above and try to identify ANY plugins that can be removed. If more than one plugin provides same functionality – carefully research if one you are planning to keep does a job that will be sufficient for your needs.
4. Deactivate and Delete all plugins you have identified as unneeded.
5. Enjoy faster blog.

Steps above might not apply to you if you are not one of the people who constantly tests new functionality but still something worth doing.

Trim Your Email Marketing Fat

If you are doing email marketing, and I hope you do, as other wise your online business is nothing but an overblown hobby, this one can be impacting you directly.

Impacting Financially!

Email marketing MUST be part of your overall strategy and properly implemented it will do wonders for your growth but it is also an cost you have to keep track of! I personally use aweber for my mailing list management but as you will see below what I’m about to share applies to both most popular autoresponder services: aweber and getresponse.

You see pricing strategies used by both services allow you to get started with minimal investment and as you grow – you pay more. And actually quite a bit more… See images below with pricing tables from both services:

I’m personally partial to aweber as it is more blogger friendly, or it used to be but either way – you have to pay attention to number of subscribers on your lists as this is what you are charged based on!

Tip: Trim Your Expense! But did you know that you are also getting charged for the leads that have chosen to leave your mailing list and have unsubscribed? As you can see in images below – it can quickly start costing you money!

We are enticed to subscribe just because the value presented makes it a no brainer to try. Combine with low monthly cost (in many cases) it keeps that expense under our radar and can go unnoticed for months on your PayPal or credit card account!

Evaluate Each Subscription!

Take a look at what you are paying for, evaluate it against your current needs and you goals for 2010, track and create a summary of past performance!

You need to take a carefully look at each and every monthly subscription, service and decide if it is right for you or not. If it is directly tied to your core business, such as autoresponder, or if you can go without it.

You might be surprised what you will discover!

While there are many other ways to trim your unnecessary expenses – 2 I mentioned above can have a big impact on monthly bases and getting rid of what you don’t need or cutting it down in size can have a positive impact on your BETTER START OF 2010!
