Feed for Gigapan snapshots & comments

Good News...

Today, when I was exploring some GigaPans, I found something really nice :)
"Snapshots & Comments Feed" is now available. You can find the link for the feed of each GigaPan panorama on it's page. I don't know if it's permanent or just a test, but something is obvious: It's a good sign. I hope the Gigapan team add the feed for GigaPan panoramas soon.

I guess I'm the first person spreading the news. I found no post about this on GigaPan forum and GigaPan blog, please let me know if you have any update.

This video is uploaded by CMU. In the video, professor Illah Nourbakhsh talks about Ethics in Robotics. In part of his 41-minute-long lecture, Illah talks about the reason behind the GigaPan technology. Here is what he says (29:50 – 30:30):

“We got here by asking the question: how can we foster better humanization between children and different parts of the world, how can we cause cross-cultural understanding? …”

And then, Illah continues:

“… and the answer in our minds was about the power of the image, what if you allow people to do imaging in a way that is so detailed that you fall into the image, explore it, find details that enable you to have a conversation with people around the world, because you essentially exploring a microcosm of them. It says everybody on earth becomes a Google Earth producer; they are making something that has extreme resolution and sharing with others. So, then we made the technology.”

New Gigapan Stitcher (0.4.386x)

The new version of GigaPan Stitcher is now available for download (0.4.3865 for Macintosh, 0.4.3864 for Windows) which also includes GigaPan Uploader. The Windows version is 16.74 MB and the Macintosh version is 66.91 MB!

P.S. I hope there will be some kind of newsletter for announcing the new versions of GigaPan Stitcher and GigaPan Uploader on gigapan.org. Even GigaPan blog has not written anything about the new versions, yet.

UPDATE on Feb. 24: So… according to what my friend, David Engle, mentioned in a comment of this post, there is a sort of newsletter called GigaPan Tech Bulletin which I guess is automatically sent to those who has bought a GigaPan Imager (New name: GigaPan EPIC). I hope there is a way to subscribe to Gigapan Tech Bulletin for public.

How to View a GigaPan Panorama on Google Earth

I know two ways that you can view a gigapan panorama on Google Earth:

1. On a page of gigapan.org:

To view a gigapan panorama when you are on a page of gigapan.org (e.g: Most Popular Gigapans, Most Recent Gigapans, or even a user’s profile), click on the “View in Google Earth 4.2+” link that appears below the panorama and its descriptions, as shown in the photo below.

2. When viewing a gigapan:

When you are viewing a gigapan panorama on its own page, you can easily view the gigapan on Google Earth by clicking on the “View in Google Earth 4.2+” link which is located between the snapshots bar and the Google Map box, on right side of the page.

If you see no link to view the gigapan on Google Earth, the gigapanner has not geo-located that gigapan on Google Earth.

How to View All GigaPan Panoramas on Google Earth

Viewing all GigaPan panoramas on Google Earth is very easy, you should just follow the following steps:

1. Go to Gigapan's home page

2. On top-right corner of the page, click on the "Most Recent" button.

3. Top of the Gigapan panoramas, find the "Browse in Google Earth" link and click on it.

4. Depending on your browser, you will get a message; the message says about the KML file you are downloading. Try to open the KML file with Google Earth; you may save the KML file on your PC/Mac and open it with Google Earth later.

What is Gigapan Uploader?

As it's name suggests, Gigapan Uploader is a software for uploading gigapan panoramas on gigapan.org.

Where Can I Get Gigapan Uploader? Is it Free?

I didn't find any specific address on gigapan dedicated to gigapan uploader, you can find it on gigapan's front page, there is a link there for downloading the latest version of the software directly. Gigapan Uploader is free and available for everybody.

How Can I Use Gigapan Uploader?

Using Gigapan uploader is a piece of cake! You just need:

a panorama larger than 50 megapixels.
a Gigapan account

Here is a snapshot of Gigapan uploader (Click on the photo to enlarge):

First, you should choose your panorama. Second, choose a title for your gigapan panorama, write some description for that, and add some tags. If you check the private box, your photo will not be shown for public but just for you; however, you can make your photo public later. Then, you should enter your username and password. If you haven't registered on gigapan, you can create a free account here. At last, click on "Upload now"!

Depending on the size of you panorama and your Internet connection speed, you should wait a while for the photo to be uploaded. When uploading finishes, a link will appear for you; click on the link to go to your gigapan directly. At first it looks complicated, but after uploading 3 or more photos it will be much easier. Good Luck with Gigapan Uploading!

How to Show some Selected gigapan panoramas on a Page

Have ever decided to select some of your gigapan panoramas to show them on a separate page on gigapan? You may have many reasons for doing this, for example, you don’t like others to load your huge profile page ,which contains your gigapan panorama + snapshots + bookmarks, for viewing just some panoramas. In a huge profile, like mine, it is not good to do this. You can easily select some of you gigapan panoramas to show them in a separate page, just follow these steps:

Find the id of you gigapan panoramas you want to select: Go to photos page, and write down the id of your gigapan panorama from address bar of your browser as shown below:
Now, type http://gigapan.org/searchGigapansList.php?ids= in your browser address bar, then add the ids to the end of the text separated by commas.

Example:
