Did you know that you can create your own framed mirror? Instead of heading to the mall and purchasing an expensive mirror, you can use material from around your home or purchase affordable items to design your own mirror.

How do I create my own mirror?

Designing your own mirror is the beginning of creating a completely new bathroom. You can use material from around the home such as photo frames. Try to choose an embossed type. Embossed frames make great wall mirrors. You could also create tabletop mirrors using it as a vanity mirror. make-up mirrors make nice displays, especially when you surround them with your favorite items such as bottles of perfumes etc.

How do I add a back?

You can use hardboard to add a backing. When picking the board however, make sure that you match the board to the weight of the mirror. Rather, make sure that the backboard will hold the weight of the frame and mirror. Mirrors typically weigh about 750g depending on the size. In this example, you are making the quarter frame, so you will need to allow 0.32m2 per m2. So, if your mirror weighs more than 3 pounds, you will need a board to hold 1.6kg per square foot. The thickness of the board then should be around one eighth inches. The mirror will fit into the rebate. You can have the glass cut at any glass shop or mirror shop.

Once you have your materials together, you will want to fit the mirror onto the backing. The backing should slide into the groove cut or wood joints. (rebate) Once you have inserted the parts, you will need to hit your brads gently to avoid breaking your mirror when nailing it into the picture frame. If you propose to hang the mirror on your wall, you will require hangers, which you need to permit to pivot.

How do I select mounting materials?

You will need a mirror, frame, short screws, corner braces, craft paper (brown paper), double-back sticky tape, dust cover, hangers, a couple of mirror hangers, awl, jigsaw, knife and extra screws to mount your frame.

Now that you have a basic idea, you can start creating your mirror. In short, it takes ten steps to create your framed mirror. To finish your mirror, we suggest that you go to your local library and check out books to help you. However, I will briefly walk you through the ten steps.

The first step is to turn your frame on its back and secure the corner braces, fastening them transversely to connect the mitred corners. With your awl, create pilot holes in the back of your frame. Once you have created the holes, insert the screws. If you have bought hardboard or are using cardboard, cut the board so that it matches the size or your mirror. Face down, place the mirror inside your wood joints. Now you can place your hardboard/cardboard inside the wood joints and over your mirror. Brads should be inserted at this point, which should be at 2.5cm intervals from the corners.

Next, use your tape to cover the frame, layering the tape to about 3mm from the outer edges of your frame. Throw away with the paper cover. Now you are off to a grand start to completing your mirror. Take the brown paper and cut a 5cm strip extending a sizeable distance further than the edge of your mirror. Once you have your paper over the backboard, you want to secure it. Use your sticky tape. The last steps is to trim, mark, and measure to add your hangers.

Hand-held Mosquito Zapper

The electric insect zapper is the best way of clearing the area around you of insects, especially the flying ones such as mosquitoes. The hand held insect killer evaporates any insect from a mosquito to a gnat instantly on contact with a nice, loud, electrical 'crack'!

However, this is not to say that the indoor bug zapper cannot be used outdoors, as long as it is not raining. It should be treated like any other high voltage electrical equipment. Keep the electric insect killer dry and definitely do not use it while you are standing in the pool!

Models vary greatly, but there are basically only two types of indoor bug killer: the battery operated bug zapper and the rechargeable electric bug killer. Both are equally effective at killing insects and work on the same principle.

The indoor bug killer looks like a 'kids' tennis racket, but with three layers of 'strings', which are in fact wires. The central network of wires becomes electrified at the touch of a button, while the other two grids, one on either side, are only earths.

When a bug is trapped between the wires of the indoor insect zapper, it creates a short, which vaporizes it instantly with a loud crack and a flash. The hand held insect zapper will kill other bugs too, but they just fry instead of explode.

I have been using the rechargeable sort for five years and am extremely happy with the hand held insect killer. In fact, the electric bug zapper has come a long way in the last few years. A fully charged indoor insect zapper is powerful enough to last for several hundred swipes and will hold it's charge, when unused, for weeks without any appreciable discharge.

The rechargeable battery unit will put up with serious use for the best part of a year, although its capability to hold a charge for a few weeks slowly reduces after six or seven months.

The most recent indoor bug zapper I've had has a main on/off switch, an LED that comes on when it is live (the brightness of this light also indicates the battery's strength) and a light that comes on when it is plugged in for recharge.

The instructions say that the bug zapper should be (re)charged for about sixteen hours. However, I usually put mine on charge over night once or twice every week or two, although the hand held insect zapper shows a large increase in performance with only a few hours recharging.

The latest version I've used also comes with a strong light called a 'headlamp'. I have found this very handy when out in the garden, but I'm unsure whether it's meant to lure the mosquitoes in the dark so that you can zap them if you're feeling bored or just vindictive, rather like an Anglerfish.

I've used the headlamp on my indoor insect zapper for that too, but the light uses a lot of battery power. All in all, the indoor insect killer is a big asset to any outdoor event. The indoor bug zapper is useful to 'clean out' your bedroom before retiring; it's unequalled for evening mosquitoes and it will clear a lunch table of wasps too.

The Razor A scooter ... What does that phrase make you think about? If you have children, I'm sure that you've heard of the Razor A scooter series, but they weren't around when we were children. However, the idea was, even though I forget the brand names from my youth.

I adored my two-wheeled, kick-powered scooter when I was a kid. Mum and Dad had their automobile, my older siblings had their bikes and I had my scooter. It didn't go fast, but then, I didn't go far either, but it was transport and it gave a feeling of freedom. I had my wheels and I was mobile!

When most folk debate vacations in England they frequently just think about resorts by the seaside such as Whitby, Clacton-on-Sea, Eastbourne and Bognor Regis. Sometimes folk might discuss taking a short break in a particular county in England for example the county of Devon in south England but not very often do they think about having a vacation in the city of Exeter. Tourist Attractions

In the city of Exeter there are only a small number of places which merit your time including; Rougemont Castle, the Royal Albert Museum and St Peter's Cathedral. As I mentioned earlier in this article there is a small selection of close by seaside villages to visit the most beautiful being the old-fashioned villages of Sidmouth, Beer and Seaton.

Further away, between Exeter and Plymouth is the sparsely populated moorland of the Dartmoor National Park with the overall area having several tourist attractions worth visiting including Buckland Abbey, A La Ronde and Buckfast Abbey along the main road, to Plymouth. Along the way you will pass by the Torbay area, which is made up of Paignton, Brixham and Torquay and is often called the English Riviera.

Exeter really is a fantastic place in which to have a vacation however why not debate having a two destination vacation and spend a few of days/nights in a really luxurious Plymouth hotel and travel around the splendid countryside and coast in between the 2 excellent vacation destinations?

Hand Held Bug Zapper

If you aren't already familiar with the electronic bug zapper, you are really going to like it and if you have had one before, I'm sure you'll welcome it back like an old pal! The electric insect killer does just what it says it does: it zaps bugs. But it does it really, very well.

Any insect that is touched by the wiring of the electronic insect zapper is electrocuted. Smaller insects like midges and mosquitoes are vaporized with a very pleasing flash and a crack. Larger bug, like house flies and wasps are killed, but don't explode like the smaller ones.

How many times have these flying bugs taken the edge off an otherwise enjoyable evening in the garden? Or how many times have you not been able to get a decent night's sleep, because you know there's at least one mosquito in the bedroom. It has happened to me hundreds of times, I know! It is very satisfying to get your own back with the hand held bug zapper.

I don't like killing things without reason - I'm married to a Buddhist- but mosquitoes? I'm sorry, they can die. And the electric bug zapper dispatches them without any messing about. No waiting and hoping they'll fly into the ultraviolet light and then into the mesh. No, one sweep of the electric insect killer and the mosie's gone and you can hear whether you got her or not. (I say her, because the sucking mosquitoes always are females - honest, I wasn't being sexist).

There are two basic types of electronic bug killer. There's the battery operated bug zapper and the rechargeable electric bug zapper. Both work on the same principle, but I prefer the rechargeable kind, although I suppose you could use rechargeable batteries too. (I bet they would be more expensive that the bug zapper in the first place). Anyway, I have been using a electric insect zapper of the rechargeable sort for five years and I am ecstatic about them.

Now-a-days, I spend a lot of time in northern Thailand with my wife, so you can bet your life that I give my hand held bug zapper a good work-out almost every night. We usually eat in the garden in the evening and all socializing is done outside by tradition, especially in the country, where we live, so it comes in very handy. I also use my hand held bug zapper to 'sweep' the bedroom for bugs before we retire at night, just like an FBI agent.

The electric insect zapper seems to get better every time I buy one, which makes it difficult to give you definite specifications. The hand held bug zappers I bought four or five years ago, sometimes failed after six to nine months of purchase, although their ability to hold a charge was less after four or five months.

However, the new electric insect zapper will last 9-12 months and still be very pokey after nine months. My latest one even has a powerful light called a headlamp incorporated into it. I'm not sure what it's supposed to be for, but if you feel that vengeance is sweet, you can attract mosquitoes with it and then kill them with your handheld insect killer.

The largest of the Baltic Republics, Latvia is one of Europe?s hidden treasures. She sits on the Baltic coast, and much like Estonia on the north and Lithuania on her south, is an important trading hub. She is also rich with ancient history and traditions. Latvia?s coastal plain is mostly flat, but the further inland you go, the more you will see hills, forests, lakes and rivers. Surprisingly enough, Latvia has around 12,000 rivers. Although she suffered under Russian control for a good many years, Latvia has emerged independent, and is quickly becoming a favorite tourist destination.

Riga, Latvia?s capital, is the most attractive of the Baltic cities, and with superb air, train and road facilities, it has become a chief tourist destination. It is situated on a sandy plain that?s about 15km from the mouth of the Daugava River. This city offers rich variety in Baroque, Classical and Art Nouveau buildings. Without a doubt, the center of the city has some of the finest Art Nouveau buildings in all of Europe, and it?s a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Dome Cathedral, which is located in Old Riga, is a great example of the architectural mixture of this city. Started in 1211, it has been added to over the centuries, and this has fashioned an amazing fusion of Romanesque, Baroque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Classical styles. On top of that, the cathedral?s organ, with almost 7,000 pipes, is the world?s greatest musical instrument. The St. Jacob?s Catholic Church, is another favorite. It was constructed in 1226, and epitomizes Gothic style of architecture. The Viestura Garden surrounding it is exceptional; Peter the Great is said to have laid the foundations and planted the first tree. Naturally, if you go to Riga you must visit the Freedom Monument. As the city?s centerpiece, it is a beautiful symbol of endurance, survival, and the cost of freedom.

Covering architecture from the 16th to the 19th centuries, the Latvian Ethnographic Museum is not far from Riga, and it?s here you will see everything from wooden churches to windmills. If you travel approximately 17km from Riga, you will find the resort of Jurmala. Made up of twelve small villages, this resort extends approximately 30km down the length of the Gulf of Riga. Due to its sandy beaches, crisp pine-scented air and golden sunshine, it is an exceptionally popular attraction.

First established in the 13th century, Sigulda is another health resort not far from Riga, on the banks of the Gauja River. It is here tourists can visit the Gauja National Park, and Turaida Castle. The largest and deepest cave in all the Baltic countries, Gutmanis Cave, is here, too. Sigulda is also a very popular site for skiing in the winter, and boating in the summer.

Norfolk Island Tourist Profile

A tiny jewel set in the blue seas of the South Pacific, Norfolk Island is only 8 km (5 mi) long, and 1,600 km (994 mi) northeast of Sydney, Australia.

It is the biggest of a cluster of three islands on the Norfolk Ridge, fringed by coral reefs and crowned by pristine rainforest and some of the world's tallest tree ferns.

On 10 October 1774, James Cook first landed on this beautiful little island and named it in honour of the then Duchess of Norfolk.

Convicts started to arrive 14 years later and over time it gained quite a harsh reputation, becoming known as 'hell in the Pacific'.

Then in 1856, descendants of the Bounty mutineers with their Tahitian wives and children sailed for five weeks from Pitcairn Island to settle on Norfolk Island. These new settlers brought with them a distinct culture and language, and many held mutineers' names such as Adams, Buffett, Christian and McCoy. From that day, Norfolk Island began its steady climb out of hell and into heaven.

Once sustained by agriculture and fishing, tourists now keep the island alive. But traditional culture remains deep rooted with dancing, singing and a unique cuisine. Banana dumplings, fried fish and Hihi pie, concocted with periwinkles, can be sampled at one of the fine restaurants scattered across the island.

The blue waters around Norfolk Island are teeming with fish, and there are countless fishing charters and scuba-diving trips out to the reef to explore this kaleidoscope underwater world. In the sheltered waters of Emily Bay, you can also indulge in some lazy swimming and snorkelling, and endless relaxation.

Electronic Bug Zapper

If you aren't already familiar with the hand held insect zapper, you are really going to love it and if you have had one before, I'm sure you'll welcome it back like an old pal! The handheld bug killer does just what it says: it zaps bugs. But it does it really, very well.

Any insect that is touched by the wiring of the hand held bug killer is electrocuted. Smaller bugs like midges and mosquitoes are disintegrated with a very satisfying flash and a crack. Larger insect, like house flies and wasps are killed, but don't explode like the smaller ones.

How many times have these flying insects taken the edge off an otherwise lovely evening in the garden? Or how many times have you not been able to get a decent night's sleep, because you know there's at least one mosquito in the bedroom. It has happened to me hundreds of times, I know! It is very satisfying to get one's own back with the hand held bug zapper.

I don't like killing things unnecessarily - I'm married to a Buddhist- but mosquitoes? I'm sorry, they can die. And the electronic insect zapper dispatches them without any messing about. No waiting and hoping they'll fly into the ultraviolet light and into the mesh. No, one sweep of the handheld bug killer and the mosie's gone and you can hear whether you got her or not. (I say her, because the sucking mosquitoes always are females - I assure you, I wasn't being sexist).

There are two basic types of electronic bug killer. There's the battery operated bug zapper and the rechargeable electric bug zapper. Both work on the same principle, but I prefer the rechargeable type, although I guess you could use rechargeable batteries too. (I bet they would be more expensive that the bug zapper in the first place). Anyway, I have been using a electronic insect zapper of the rechargeable kind for five years and I am ecstatic about them.

Now-a-days, I spend a lot of time in northern Thailand with my wife, so you can bet your bottom dollar that I give my hand held bug zapper a good work-out almost every evening. We usually eat in the garden in the evening and all socializing is done outside by tradition, especially in the rural areas, where we live, so it comes in real handy. I also use my handheld bug killer to 'sweep' the bedroom for bugs before we retire at night, just like a CIA agent.

The hand held insect zapper just seems to improve every time I buy one, which makes it hard to give you definite specifications. The electric bug zappers I had four or five years ago, often failed within six to nine months of purchase, although their ability to hold a charge reduced a lot after four or five months.

However, the new handheld bug killer will last 9-12 months and still be very pokey after nine months. My latest model even has a powerful torch called a headlamp built into it. I'm not sure what it's supposed to be for, but if you feel that vengeance is sweet, you can lure mosquitoes with it and then kill them with your electronic bug zapper.

Exploring History at Vietnam's Cu Chi Tunnels

The Cu Chi Tunnels near Ho Chi Minh City are an incredible destination for war and history buffs. During the Vietnam War it was the major battleground between the U.S and Viet Cong.

This 200km system of tunnels was a major battleground. Built in the 1940's to hide from the French, these tunnels became a major factor in defeating the Americans during the Vietnam War. Hidden in the jungles of the Mekong Delta, Vietnamese soldiers eluded the Americans for years on end in this endless labyrinth of passageways.

Surprisingly, the U.S. knew that the tunnels were there, they simply could not find them or destroy them. They put everything they had into taking out the tunnels from dispersing agent orange and napalm to relentlessly dropping bombs, but the caves remained in tact. The land didn't fare as well and the jungle was completely destroyed along with everything in it. Today it is thriving once again however, showing that with time, the earth can repair even the harshest results of destruction.

If you are lucky, you may receive a first hand account from a former Vietnamese soldier. Guides will tell you stories of their time in the war and can give you information on intimate details of the war that took place in this jungle. If you listen carefully, you can learn a great deal about history.

The Viet Cong used the jungle to their advantage. They could run through with ease, knowing their way around their own land and had several cave entrances at the ready to disappear into. They were hidden well with termite hills placed atop, or with leaves scattered above. Guide dogs could not follow their scent because they would sprinkle cayenne pepper around the entrance confusing the dogs and making them turn in the opposite direction. They could safely disappear into the 200 km system and if followed, the American soldiers couldn't fit inside anyway. The entrances were tiny and made for a slight frame, for a large U.S. soldier, fitting in would be almost impossible without blasting it.

They knew their tunnels well, unlike the American soldier. They would enter the tunnel avoiding the booby traps placed to kill or maim the enemy. Several different types of crude traps were laid in wait for the poor soldier that had to follow them in or the soldier that was sent to investigate upon a discovery.

U.S. Soldiers struggled greatly with wet feet rotting in their boots. Little did they know, sandals were their best defense. Vietnamese soldiers wore sandals made from tire rubber to keep their feet from getting jungle rot. The tire rubber was durable and protected them as they ran through the jungle, but the sandal allowed their feet to breath unlike the heavy army boots. You can buy a pair at the Cu Chi Tunnels and enjoy them for the rest of your trip. They are surprisingly comfortable.

Life was difficult in the tunnels and they lived in them for years at a time. They contained functioning kitchens, hospitals and sleeping quarters. They managed to survive underground dealing with the elements. Some rooms were very spacious, but mostly the passageways were very tight being no more than a meter high. Malaria ran rampant and the unsanitary conditions caused infection and illness. Not only did they have to deal with American bombing and fighting, they had to deal with deadly snakes and spiders underground.

When visiting the tunnels, your tour will take place in larger quarters that have been blasted out for tourists. But if you are very brave, you can decide to crawl through a 150 meter long piece of the tunnel left in its original form.

First you will have to enter through a small hole in the ground. This is enough to make many tourists chicken out. Some people won't even be able to fit inside and will not even have the option to go. But if you can manage to squeeze through, be sure to do so. You will have the one true experience of the day, feeling what it actually must have been like for a soldier to crawl through this claustrophobic space.

During your tour you will learn little tricks like how the Viet Cong tracked U.S. soldiers by following these fascinating plants that actually pointed in the direction that people walked. As you brush by, the leaves of the plants curl in the direction that you are heading. A dead giveaway for the unsuspecting American soldier. You will try to food of the Viet Cong and you will visit different rooms that were camouflaged above ground, learning all about how the Vietnamese kept themselves from being discovered.

Now that you have learned all that there is to know about the Cu Chi Tunnels, you will be given the opportunity to feel what it was like. Believe it or not, you are given the chance to fire and AK 47. Or can choose your automatic weapon of choice. and for the cost of $1 a round you can feel the power of these destructive weapons by firing them at the shooting range completing your Vietnam war tour.

The Cu Chi tunnels are a fascinating piece of history that must not be missed if you are visiting southern Vietnam. They have survived 60 years and for most of that time relentless bombing and destruction. To learn about life here during the war is worth the day trip from Ho Chi Minh City.

Costa Rica Eco Tourism, Teddy Roosevelt And The Matterhorn: The Beginnings

Like so many of the world's greatest achievements, it began with an observation, so simple one wonders why nobody saw it earlier and so powerful it is still changing the world. It started with a unique man on a intriguing and beautiful mountain called the Matterhorn. The world's first eco tourist was Theodore Roosevelt and what we call "eco tourism" today leads thousands of people a year to a little sapphire named by Christopher Columbus five centuries ago: Costa Rica, the "rich coast."

About 20 years before he became one of America's greatest presidents, Roosevelt, always the outdoors man, went to Europe to climb the famous Matterhorn Mountain in Switzerland. He was chagrined by what he encountered on the mountain or, more accurately, what he did not see.

The mountain was virtually barren. Where once there had been wilderness there were no longer goats, mountain sheep, bears, wolves, or other great animals.

Though the phrase "eco tourism" was nearly 100 years away from being coined, Theodore Roosevelt was the world's first eco tourist and in a very real way, he is responsible for today's eco tourism that brings thousands of people each year to Costa Rica.

What do Roosevelt and the Matterhorn have to do with Costa Rica eco tourism? More than you might imagine. The Matterhorn brought home to him the necessity to set aside vast tracts of land to preserve life and, when he became President, he took on the robber barons and vested interests to set aside 230 million acres as wilderness and parks: an extraordinary achievement for America and singular achievement for the world.

Teddy Roosevelt's singular vision led to the birth of eco tourism. Americans quickly demonstrated that they will gladly pay money to visit wilderness and see wildlife---at least in the United States.

But, America's experience was one thing. It was wealthy and developed. Costa Rica was, seemingly, very different. Here was a place that in 1519 its Spanish Governor called "the poorest and most miserable Spanish colony in all Americas." Four and a half centuries later, now independent and free, most of its forests had been cut or burned to make farm land. Big (American) business dominated its primary product, bananas, and the country was almost completely dependent upon the export of bananas, coffee, and other agricultural products for its economic life. United Fruit Company controlled the banana market and its relations with Costa Rica were often stormy, sometimes icy. Then, in the early 1970s, prices for coffee collapsed during a glut of the product on the world market. The country's future looked bleak.

However, nothing in life is predestined and from the economic crisis was born Costa Rica eco tourism. Its parents were challenge and opportunity. Challenge always breeds opportunity. For utterly different reasons, conservationists and business interests argued that sustainable development needed to be given an opportunity rather than simply continuing exploitation of rapidly declining resources. In a bold step that Roosevelt would have applauded, the government joined forces with conservationists and businesses and changed course, ultimately setting aside nearly 25% of the country for parks and preserves over the ensuing years.

By any measure, and in the span of just three decades (about as long as The Simpsons have been on television!), the results have been stunning. While many countries were slashing, cutting, and burning their forests, Costa Rica chose to reforest. Today, there are 20% more forests than only 25 years ago. Jaguars, peccaries, and other wildlife are returning to places where they haven't been seen for more than a generation. The country has enthusiastically embraced sustained development, refusing to allow off shore drilling for oil and building renewable power plants. Impressively 99% of its electrical power now comes from hydro-electric plants---and it is beginning to install wind turbines as well. Columbia and Yale researchers now put it within in the top five of all environmentally sensitive countries on the globe.

It has been a spectacular reversal in fortune. The country has vaulted into the top position on the Happiest Place in the World Index even as Costa Rica eco tourism has soared. Sustainable tourism has lifted the economy while preserving its wonders. As it turns out, Columbus was exactly right when he named this place "the rich coast" or "Costa Rica." The Spanish governor was dead wrong when he described Costa Rica as "the poorest and most miserable Spanish colony in Americas." And, Theodore Roosevelt, the world's first eco tourist, would smile in delight if he were here today.

Finally, we need to end with the Swiss Matterhorn, the place behind Roosevelt's sudden clarity that parks and preserves were essential to saving wildlife and Costa Rica's bold extension of that idea leading to today's incredibly successful Costa Rica eco tourism. There is irony here. Costa Rica is often called the "Switzerland" of the tropics but Switzerland could learn a lesson here. Costa Rica's mountains are filled with life. Indeed, one of every five species of plants and animals on earth are found here. Meanwhile, the Swiss have learned little and the magnificent Matterhorn remains silent because its life was exploited, not cherished.
