AUDITIONS AT ETC SEPT 16 & 17 [by kimdmy]

Stage Auditions:: AUDITIONS AT ETC SEPT 16 & 17
Island ETC Is Seeking Strong Comedic Actors For Upcoming Production

Island ETC (East-End Theatre Company) is holding open auditions for all roles in our next production, Christopher Durang’s provocative satire WHY TORTURE IS WRONG, AND THE PEOPLE WHO LOVE THEM. Auditions will be held on Sunday and Monday, September 16th and 17th. Auditions will begin at 7:00pm on both evenings and will be held at ETC, 2317 Mechanic in Galveston.

Christopher Durang (Tony-Award Winner) turns political humor upside down with this raucous and thought-provoking satire about America’s growing homeland “insecurity.” WHY TORTURE IS WRONG, AND THE PEOPLE WHO LOVE THEM tells the story of a young woman suddenly in crisis – is her new husband, whom she married when drunk, a terrorist? Or is he simply crazy? Or both? Is her father’s hobby of butterfly collecting really a cover for his involvement in a shadow government? Why does her mother enjoy going to the theatre so much? Does she seek mental escape, or is she insane? Honing in our private terrors both at home and abroad, Durang somehow relieves our fears in this black comedy for an era of all color alerts.

Rehearsals for WHY TORTURE IS WRONG, AND THE PEOPLE WHO LOVE THEM will begin on Sunday, October 21st (with a cast meeting and read-through scheduled earlier). Rehearsals are Sundays through Thursdays from 7:30pm to 10:15pm. Performances are November 16 – December 8. Performances are Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings with one Sunday matinee December 2nd. (*There will be no performance on Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 22nd.) All actors at ETC receive a production stipend during strike on Sunday, December 9th.

Roles:
Felicity, Female (25 to 35) – Really nice woman; educated fast-paced New York type; funny; self-deprecating, clever, stylish; great comic timing and must be able to convincingly ballroom dance with a partner.
Zamir, Male (25 to 45) – Charismatic but mysterious man of indeterminate ethnicity (dark-haired, perhaps middle-eastern but could also be Greek or Italian); does NOT have an accent; a mix of sexy and scary; can go from charming to threatening in an instant.
Luella, Female (Late 40’s to mid-60’s) – Felicity’s mother, a somewhat befuddled/dazed woman; has an upscale suburban feel but is not snobby or patronizing (not country-club type); forgetful and repetitive, but not annoying.
Leonard, Male (Late 40’s to mid 60’s) – Felicity’s father; strong-minded, formidable, willful, 100% certain he is right about everything; deadpan, serious.
Hildegard, Female (mid 30’s to late 50’s) – A conservative, old-fashioned woman who admires Leonard greatly, has a crush on him, although she doesn’t think of it that way; great at slapstick comedic moments.
Voice/Narrator, Male (20’s to 40’s) – Well-spoken, makes announcements throughout the play; also plays a wacky, hyperactive spy and a suave maitre’d. Should sing well or at least pleasantly.
(**Please note the age ranges are not set in stone.)

Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. Those auditioning should bring a current headshot and resume.

For additional information on auditions or the production, please email ETC’s artistic director at kimdmy@aol.com.
Silent Sky Auditions [by PearlTheater]

Stage Auditions:: Silent Sky Auditions
Silent Sky
by Lauren Gunderson

In Lauren Gunderson’s witty, fictionalized portrayal of her life, Henrietta Swan Leavitt receives the opportunity of a lifetime when she is called to join Harvard’s corps of “computers”. With her compatriots, Annie Jump Cannon and Wilhelmina Flemming, Leavitt searches photographs of the night sky, mapping the stars in order to determine our place in the galaxy. Family and romance vie for her attention as she catalogues the stars, and she is torn between a life of love, of duty, and of devotion to her science.

Leavitt’s struggle as a woman in a male-dominated scientific field remains relevant today. Though many barriers to entry in physics and astronomy have been overcome, women still face being paid less than men across the board, and women of color particularly face unique challenges in science academia and industry. The Pearl’s production of Silent Sky seeks to explore through Leavitt’s story a common root in the challenges faced by Leavitt and her contemporaries and by broad range of women of color in science today.

AUDITION DATES AND TIMES:

August 5, 3pm
August 6, 7pm

Women of color are particularly encouraged to audition. Please bring headshot or current photo and updated resume'.

PERFORMANCE DATES:

October 5 - 21, 2018

CHARACTERS:

Wilhelmina Flemming: ~40s-50s, A fellow computer, older than Cannon or Leavitt.
Annie Jump Cannon: ~30s-40s, Head of the women computers, a serious, focused woman.
Margaret Leavitt: ~30s, Musician and composer, sister to Henrietta, devoted to family.
Peter Shaw: ~30s-50s, astronomer, assistant to Harvard Observatory Director Edward Pickering. In love with Leavitt.

For more information on auditions, please feel free to contact us .Pearl-Theater

Reefer Madness @ Katy Visual Performing Arts Center, July 17-18, 2017 [by JayJayM12]

Stage Auditions:: Reefer Madness @ Katy Visual Performing Arts Center, July 17-18, 2017
Katy Visual Performing Arts Center proudly invites you to audition for their highly anticipated production of Reefer Madness the Musical, from the team that brought you last year’s smash hit Evil Dead the Musical!

Director: Jason Howard
Music Director: India Murphy
Choreographer: Eve Tidwell

Book by: Kevin Murphy & Dan Studney, Music by: Dan Studney, Lyrics by: Kevin Murphy
Produced by Special Arrangement with: R & H Theatrical

All roles are available and some (not all) will require being scantily clad/half-clothed on stage at various times. All roles are unpaid, volunteer positions.

Audition Dates & Times:
July 17 – 18, 2017, beginning @ 7:00pm (by appointment only)
Callbacks: July 19, 2017 @ 7:00pm

Location:
Katy Visual & Performing Arts Center (KVPAC Main Campus)
2501 S. Mason Rd, Suite 290
Katy, TX 77450

Performance Dates:
September 29, 30 & October 1, 2017

*** To schedule an audition, please email the director at reefermadness.kvpac@gmail.com ***

Audition Requirements:
Please prepare 2 contrasting, contemporary musical theatre songs of 16 – 32 bars each, preferably in a similar style to the show (songs FROM the show are allowed, but not recommended). An accompanist will be provided. No a capella auditions. Ideally, at least one song displays your comedic acting ability. Monologues are optional – it’s your chance to show us what you got! At callbacks, we will do cold reads from the script, songs from the show, and a dance routine (so, come dressed accordingly - accordingly is all the rage anyway).

Show Description:
Inspired by the original 1936 film of the same name, this raucous musical comedy takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the hysteria caused when clean-cut kids fall prey to marijuana, leading them on a hysterical downward spiral filled with evil jazz music, sex and violence. You won't be able to resist the spoofy fun of REEFER MADNESS. The addictive and clever musical numbers range from big Broadway-style showstoppers to swing tunes like 'Down at the Ol' Five and Dime' and the Vegas-style 'Listen to Jesus, Jimmy,' featuring J.C. Himself leading a chorus of showgirl angels. This dynamic show will go straight to your head! REEFER MADNESS is a highly stylized and satirical political commentary. It contains adult humor, religious parody, and drug use, as well as suggested violence and sexual explicitness. It therefore may be inappropriate for younger performers and audiences.

Character Breakdown:

Ages and descriptions are merely a suggestion and starting point – don’t be afraid to audition if you don’t feel you match. I enjoy casting creatively. Some roles may or may not be doubled, at the director’s discretion. The ensemble will have plenty of opportunities to take on additional roles not listed and shine!

Lecturer - M, 25-45, A severe authority figure who warns the audience of the perils of Reefer. Perhaps has a personal vendetta against this vile weed. Plays other various roles throughout.

Jimmy Harper - M, 18-22, A wholesome, innocent, high school teenager who runs into trouble after he is lured into the dangerous world of reefer. Loves Mary Lane. Needs to be comfortable appearing on stage half-dressed.

Mary Lane - F, 18-22, Jimmy’s sweetheart, a naive, virginal teenage girl, who may ultimately prove to not be nearly as innocent as she seems. Loves Jimmy Harper right back. Needs to be comfortable appearing on stage half-dressed.

Jack Stone - M, 30-45, The handsome, charming, and ruthless proprietor of the Reefer Dern, a 30’s gangster movie-type.

Jesus – appears to Jimmy in a vision a couple of times throughout the show. Smooth, cocky, and sings like Neil Diamond. A real showman.

Mae - F, 30-45, An attractive, yet slightly worse-for-wear dame, the hostess of the Reefer Den. Straight out of a Douglas Sirk film. Many regrets in life and has a kind heart.

Ralph Wiley - M, 25-35, A denizen of the Reefer Den, formally a fraternity man, his college days ended long ago due to his reefer habit.

Sally - F, 25-35, A sexy and seductive resident of the Reefer Den, she possesses the libidinous soul of Mae West combined with the rat-a-tat moxie of vintage Barbara Stanwyck.

Ensemble: M, F, 18-30, Mixed group to represent Reefer Zombies, Kids at the Five and Dime, Reefer Orgy dancers, Angels, Patriotic chorus in the Star-spangled finale, and many others throughout

Stage Auditions:: The Foreigner Auditions July 9/10, 2017 at the Pearl Theater
Auditions Announced:
The Foreigner written by Larry Shue Directed by Curtis Barber. July 9 at 3pm and July 10 at 7pm at the Pearl Theater.

WHEN
Saturday, July 9th @ 7:30 - 9:00 pm
Sunday, July 10th @ 7:30 - 9:00 pm

WHERE
The Pearl Theater
14803 Park Almeda Dr.
Houston, Tx 77047

WHAT TO BRING
Please bring a Head shot and Resume.

The audition will consist of reading sides from the script. These will be provided at the audition upon check-in.

REHEARSALS
Rehearsal will begin tentatively the week of July 24th, and rehearse through the month of August.

PERFORMANCES

THE FOREIGNER runs 3 weekends, Sept. 1-17th
with two weekday evening performances, Thursday, Sept. 7th and Tuesday, Sept. 12

SYNOPSIS & CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

An inventive comic romp, The Foreigner is set in a fishing lodge in rural Georgia and tells the story of a pathologically shy young man named Charlie who pretends that he can’t speak English in order to avoid making conversation with strangers. Eventually the other guests decide to air their secrets around Charlie – many damaging revelations made - with the thought that Charlie doesn’t understand a word being said. That he does fuels the nonstop hilarity of the play and sets up the wildly funny climax in which things go uproariously awry for the “bad guys,” and the “good guys” emerge triumphant.

Froggy Lesueur: A British military demolitions expert who occasionally conducts field operations in rural Georgia, Froggy is Charlie's caring friend and devises the scheme that protects Charlie from having to interact with the other guests at the lodge.

Charlie Baker: A science-fiction copy editor for a book publishing house, Charlie is in his late forties, British, and is a pathologically shy little man who has a very unfaithful wife, no personality that he can think of, and a need for peace and quiet. He has accompanied his friend, Froggy to a Georgia fishing lodge much against his own better judgment.

Betty Meeks: The proprietor of a Georgia fishing lodge, Betty is past seventy, a widow, and a long-time friend of Froggy. She is pleasant, wise in some ways, naïve in others. She is a good-hearted, generous, “down-home” Southerner who speaks the hardy local dialect.

Reverend David Marshall Lee: Neither the stereotypical pallid young divinity student nor the hearty backslapping evangelist, he appears to be a regular guy, one that you would like to have on your side. He is not what he seems, however, and he is clearly the brains behind the plot he engages in with Owen Musser to get control of Betty Meeks's fishing lodge and Catherine Simms's fortune.

Catherine Simms: The very pregnant and potentially rich fiancée of the Reverend Lee, she can be a formidable force and occasionally almost too much for the good reverend to handle. She has a ready wit and a sharp tongue. She badly needs someone to talk to, and, since Charlie doesn't bother giving advice, he suits her needs perfectly. Catherine is Ellard's sister.

Owen Musser: The Tilghman County property inspector, Owen is a two-tattoo man: one of them, he may have gotten while drunk or on a dare; two of them means he went back for more. Beware of a two-tattoo man. Owen and the Reverend Lee are cooking up a plot to condemn Betty's lodge so that it can be bought for their own nefarious purposes. Owen, we find, is the absolute stereotype of an ill-bred southern Klansman.

Ellard Simms: Catherine's brother, Ellard is an agreeable young man who is a bit slow-witted. He works as a sort of handyman for Betty and needs a considerable bit of instruction in his tasks, but may not be as dull as he seems. He is due to inherit a share of the Simms family fortune, unless the Reverend Lee can convince Catherine that Ellard is too stupid to manage money, or anything else, on his own. Ellard befriends Charlie and even decides to teach him to speak English.

All roles are open and new faces are encouraged to audition.

Any questions can be answered by emailing the director directly at barbercg@gmail.com

Stage Auditions:: May 1 AUDITION at KVPAC for Empowered: How One GIrl Scout Nearly Destroyed the World's Economy
Katy Visual and Performing Arts Center's Encore Players will be holding auditions for Empowered: How One Girl Scout Nearly Destroyed the World's Economy by Don Zolidis directed by Joshua Schorejs next Monday, May 1st from 7 to 9PM.

Amaryllis is determined to win her Girl Scout troop's cookie-selling contest, but she'll need more than charm to win first prize (a unicorn!) and avoid last place (which means getting kicked out of the troop!). So when sales droop, she naturally turns to the financial sector for advice. Soon she's faking a terminal illness, franchising her methods, and contracting with a payday lender to offer 30-year loans for cookies. A hysterical homage to Glengarry Glen Ross and send-up of the wild excesses of the financial crisis.

We are looking to cast an ensemble of 7 women and 3 men; actors of any age or ethnicity.

We ask that actors prepare 2 contrasting comedic monologues no longer than 3mins in total length.

Empowered will have performances July 7th, 8th, & 9th.

If you are interested in auditioning, or would like more information, please contact the director, Joshua Schorejs, to set up an audition time at jjschorejs@gmail.com.

Thank You!
