Discussion Starter by Rachel Roizen

Ashley Albert’s case study, “From Dream Job to Dream Job in 1000 Easy Steps,” immediately appealed to me because of the valuable advice she imparts through her story. Having a successful career as a voice-over artist, Ashley did not need to venture into an additional line of work as a “Kindie Rock Star” but when the opportunity knocked she was not afraid to answer the door and take on the challenge. When Ms. Alberts received a phone call from a friend announcing that she had to start a kids rock band, she embraced the situation and created The Jimmies. She proceeded to write and record songs, hold auditions, and open Pluckypea Records putting everything she had into the venture.

The reason Ms. Alberts case is so inspiring to me is because she doesn’t sugarcoat the truth- that success takes hard work and there are always road blocks to overcome. She selflessly shares the lessons that she has learned along her road to stardom and includes personal anecdotes from her struggles. Ms. Alberts also has no shame in admitting that she cannot always follow her own advice, and that sometimes decisions are not all black and white. She explains that it’s hard to not accept offers from friends for help with her business, that she still has moments of doubt, and that it’s still uncomfortable to fire employees. By giving such straightforward advice and then an honest explanation of why her advice cannot always be followed, Ms. Alberts send the message to young women everywhere that successful people make mistakes along the way and perseverance does pay off. As her case study states, “Every moment feels like an opportunity to achieve something bigger and better and funnier. And while there may be some boo-boos along the way, there are also some pretty good snacks.”

“In the summer of 2007 I timidly walked into our first boutique in southern California and got my first “real” order – 400 pieces in several designs. I knew at this moment that Ooh La La Mama, LLC was going to be more than just a hobby. We then were introduced to The Dressing Room in LA’s fashion mart. They became our first show room and we started getting tons of wholesale orders right away.

Problem #2 for us: How to manage sales and production?”

Comment from student Kaitlyn McAuliffe:

Although the classroom environment and taking classes geared towards learning and using skills applicable for a career in business can be beneficial, there are skills that one must learn to be successful in business that are hard to teach in the classroom. This problem is exhibited in Cindy Christine Parker’s case, Dr. Ooh La La – Funky Clothes for Little Monsters and Girly Girls. Dr. Parker’s background as a medical school graduate and an Emergency Room doctor trained her for highly stressful situations and blood and guts, but not for a new venture in children’s clothing. Parker’s case highlights the challenges and successes of learning business by doing business. As a student that has taken a few courses in management, far fewer than many of my peers, I often wonder how much more of a struggle it will be for me to learn so many things just by doing them. Luckily, I enjoy to be challenged in exactly that way, so hopefully it will not be too bad. However, there are many students that might find this learning experience to be overwhelming. Especially because the problems in new ventures and businesses seem to come faster than one could ever prepare for. The development of a website, product branding, sales and cash flow, and employee management, are only a few of the things that could cause problems in initial phases of the development of a new company. I believe one of the lessons that Parker’s case features is that a person can never be too prepared for what life is going to bring you when you least expect it. But, if a person has the drive to succeed, confidence in oneself, and willingness to learn, one can take a small idea and turn it into something much greater than originally anticipated. It is always fun to surprise yourself by doing things you never imagined you could do. And, as Dr. Parker demonstrates, anyone can do it, even if they don’t have a strong background in the field.

Too often I have seen people blame others, especially their parents, for their own failures or as justification as to why they have not achieved success. I’ll even admit that I used to be one of those people. And it was stories like that of Delores Williams which allowed me to change my mentality and use the energy I put into justifying my failures to exploring the opportunities I did have and to succeed. Ms. Williams’ case, Moving from Abandonment to Defining Herself, explains her journey from abused and abandoned youth to an accomplished writer. I think in life, but also in business, a person’s mentality and attitude is an essential component to success. Although it is especially hard to overcome personal struggles related to family since they are often thought to be one’s strongest support system, the time and energy a person could gain from eliminating that negative aspect of his or her life could be used much more efficiently. Ms. Williams had the choice to either let her past relationships with people hinder her from moving forward with her talents, or to accept that the past is the past, but that she has control of her future. She chose to use her past as a reason to succeed, which is truly inspiring, because although many people do not take this route, a person’s failures do not affect the people that have hurt them. Success, however, proves that a person is a strong enough individual to take his or her life into their own hands. Exhibiting a positive attitude and having the strength to take on a challenge under the worst of circumstances is heroic and encouraging.

“As I walked into the room, all eyes were on me. “Look, there’s a waste of God given talent. She’s smart but she’s a teenage mother. Her father is an alcoholic. Her mother doesn’t have any formal education. She was raised in a dysfunctional environment. She doesn’t have a chance to succeed. She’s won’t even graduate from high school. She will never be good enough for anything.” These are the sounds of the voices I hear echoing throughout the room.

I’m not going to say anything to them but I will prove them wrong. I know that I can be anything I want to be. People didn’t know that behind all the pain, there was a dreamer as well as a survivor. In my mind, I was focused on the future- my dreams. People fail to realize when you have a burning desire to succeed there’s no devil in hell that can stop you. Yes, sometimes you might be delayed getting there but never denied. I lived to fulfill my dreams – to prove people wrong.”

Have you ever had someone tell you that can’t do something? Thank you will never amount to anything? I know that I have been told that very same thing on several occasions and so has one inspirational woman named Kenya McRae. Kenya McRae, who I had the honor of reading her Hot Mommas Project case study, is a woman whose determination to defy the odds inspires a world of people who face similar challenges on a daily basis. Ms. McRae’s case study, “Proving people wrong; following your dreams” touched me deeply as someone who has spent my entire life hearing I will never amount to anything. Ms. McRae’s decision to defy the odds and succeed despite everyone telling her she would fail has lead her to create a thriving business called McRae foods, which specializing in producing gourmet BBQ sauce. Ms. McRae’s decision to succeed makes her a modern day example of how if one works hard enough or she can achieve any goal her or she dreams up. I know that part of what drives me to succeed is hearing the stories of women like Ms. McRae telling me that if she can do it so can I. Ms. McRae is truly a Hot Momma because what better way is there to mentor and teach generations to come then be a living example of how if an individual believes enough in their dream they can make it happen despite the odds.

I hope that you will take the time out of your busy schedule to read Kenya McRae’s case study or any of our other Hot Mommas Project cases by going to www.hotmommasproject.org.

Raise the bar on performance and get the right people on the bus.

Give people a road map. Make sure that they know what is expected of them.

Engage hearts and minds.

Move quickly, as people will worry about change.

Communicate frequently, consistently, and honestly.

Rosenfeld was very engaging and provided great insight into the “business of Kraft,” but I personally would have liked to see a few more women speak about business at the forum. Nevertheless, I believe that Rosenfeld would be a great candidate for a Hot Mommas role model and would love to see her to write her case!

Last week Kathy, the founder of the Hot Mommas Project, presented me with the amazing opportunity to attend the World Business Forum. I, of course, took her up on her offer and early this morning I headed to New York City for the big event. Today was the second day of the forum. Due to my class schedule, I was not able to make it to any of the first day’s events. Kathy, however, was in attendance and blogged from the forum on the Hot Mommas insider’s blog.

The first segment of today’s forum was the International Insights Panel. During this time, many renowned leaders in international business gave their perspectives on economic and other business issues. They discussed how their industries have been impacted by the events of the past few years and gave global solutions for issues such as the financial crisis and climate change. To be honest, I felt a little distanced when I first arrived at the conference; I knew that the vast majority of those around me were extremely educated, professional, and experienced in their fields. As a college sophomore, I have limited experience with business. However, the speakers on the International Insights Panels included many anecdotes that I could relate to, and I ended up taking away a lot from their speeches. The following speakers are those who I personally learned the most from.

Francisco Gonzalez, Chairman and C.E.O. of Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA), was one of my favorite speakers on the panel. BBVA is the second largest bank in Spain and the seventh largest in the world. Gonzalez shared many business strategies for challenging economic times. He offered BBVA’s solution, which focuses on three pillars – principles, people, and innovation. His company strives to know its customers and serve them well, invest in technology and provide the best services with the lowest average cost, and take advantage of any new opportunities that arise that will allow BBVA to better itself. I took these as great general strategies for running a successful businesss.

Peter Voser, the C.E.O. of Dutch Shell, was another speaker who I particularly enjoyed. Voser focused on energy solutions and discussed the strategies that Shell has employed during tough economic times. I found Voser fascinating, as I am very interested in climate change and business leaders’ perspectives on the environment. I will be working full-time in business in a few years and I hope to be committed to personal and professional accountability. Voser mentioned a convention that will occur in Copenhagen this December – the COP15 United Nations Climate Change Conference. The goal of this convention is to bring governments and organizations from around the world together to discuss possible resolutions to the effects of global warming. There is a lot of interesting information on the conference at the COP15 website, located at http://en.cop15.dk/.

The final speaker on the panel was Roger Agnelli, the President and C.E.O. of Vale. Vale is the second-largest mining company in the world. Agnelli has been called “the best strategist in Brazil” and worked in investment baking before he became involved with the mining industry. He noted that the primary difference in the banking and mining industries is time; investment banking moves quickly, while the mining industry seems very heavy or slow. Agnelli was very optimistic about the future of the mining industry and his company. Overall, he was animated and a very interesting speaker.

All of the speakers in the International Insights Panel gave compelling perspectives on global business and the economy. As a current GW Business School student, I feel very privileged to here among so many influential leaders in business.

Tyra wanted to have a simple answer to the question “what do you do?” like “I’m a professor” or “I’m an attorney,” but no one answer was either accurate or truthful. In fact, any given week involved teaching online graduate courses, preparing training presentations, reviewing contracts, and writing articles or working on her book. She wished she could settle on one career or another, but no one thing seemed sufficient.”

Event information follows:

Case excerpt and discussion starter by Madison Cooke:

“Get out of the house! Get the kids and get out of here right now! Run! Don’t go downstairs! Just get out of here!” Tina heard her husband, Jack, frantically screaming as he came up from the basement. The next thing Tina remembered was seeing him storming around opening windows, propping open the doors and mumbling something about getting the fans out of the garage as he shoved her, the three babies and their St. Patrick’s Day meal into the car and directed Tina to go straight to their inlaws.

Jack was acting crazy and Tina was feeling very dizzy and nauseous. Was she scared or was it something else? As confused and scared as Tina was at that moment, it was nothing compared to the events of the next several weeks that would change everything about her and her family’s life as they had known it for the worse…and for the better.

They say, ‘Hell has no fury like a woman scorned’.”

Erin Brockovich has been my all time favorite movie since the first time I saw it. I saw a strong, inspirational women who fought against the odds to do what was right for all the people hurt by the company’s toxic waste while also taking care of her family and instantly realized that she was the type of person I hope to one day become. As great a role model as Erin Brockovich is there is one inspirational woman, named Tina Williams, who I had the honor of reading her Hot Mommas Project case study, gets up every morning to fight for social justice, and her family to ensure that no one else will ever have to suffer the same way her family and herself now suffer. Ms. William’s case study, “An Everyday Erin Brockovich” truly encompasses the courage, passion, and determination that brings people success in their personal and professional lives. Ms. Williams decided to use her experience with chemical poisoning to not only fight for the rights of her family, but to also fight to prevent anyone else from suffering from chemical poisoning as well by creating her business Best Reflections Marketing, which, “focuses on developing the KLT Factor, ethics and accountability in business through social marketing, ” and founding a support group called From Poisoned to Prosperity to help others who have been effected by chemicals know there is life beyond exposures. I think a lot of people in today’s world choose to see the bad and wallow in self-pity instead of get up and do something to change it where Tina Williams choose to focus on how she can use her experience to help others. Thanks to Tina Williams people everywhere are discovering that they too can become a modern day Erin Brockovich.
