For video production I use Sony Vegas6… clean, practical interface, dynamite program.

For publications my first choice is (Aldus) Adobe PageMaker; photos by PhotoShop, documents by OpenOffice!

Calculations? Open Office’s Excel workalike…

…all encapsulated by Adobe’s PDF printer selected from the Windows menu, instead of hard-copy on my Canon.

Google Goggles, Market Samurai, Content Bully, Search Engine PRO, Keyword Digger, Camtasia, CPitbull Utilities, PageBreeze, AlleyCode, PremierePRO and FileZilla round out my Tier One Tools…

Application software handles almost all the video editing tasks. Once you download a certain application or use the existing software that comes along with your computer, it is possible to edit all or some of the video sequences. Oftentimes, videos are stored in a certain directory as .dv or .avi files. You can only see one image on the large screen area but you can easily access the directory. You can also zoom in or out and by clicking on the play button, you can play the video and move to the next video image. Software also allows you to mirror or rotate images by 90 degrees. You can even select multiple files together.

Video editing software is similar to editing slide shows. In video editing, the software uses a video codec when editing video files. Audio clips can be edited but such a task is limited; however, you can sync the video and audio to create a good video output.

Transitions and effects can also be added while using digital editing software. Some software programs allow users to encode the final video to web videos, DVD, MP4, video podcast, and cellular phone videos. Some of the pioneer software programs are Apple FCS, VideoStudio (Ulead), Adobe Premiere, Avid, Sony Vegas, Montage Extreme, MAGIX, Lightworks, and Media 100. Television programs and films used to use these software programs. Some companies and videographers used custom hardware for their video processing needs. There are still other programs out there like that of IMovie, WMM, Nero 8, Pinnacle Systems, GEAR Video, Muvee, AutoProducer, and Virtual Dub that can meet your digital video editing needs.

Editing cards and computers are readily available in the market for videographers. The software packages should suit the other hardware you purchase so that you can work smoothly. With so many software programs to choose from, there are times when videographers are not able to pick the most appropriate one that can meet their needs.

You need to be a wise customer. Don’t go for the first video editing program that you see (Movie Maker, Camtasia). Instead, try to shop around and get to know your choices. Read customer reviews and software ratings. Ask at online forums (okay, fora!) There are lots of online resources that provide information on ratings and reviews. Take time in reading them because you can get helpful information on some of the best programs in the market.

You want to be aware that software programs offer different features. Some programs are better suited for beginners and there are also programs designed for advanced users. Make sure that you get an appropriate program so that your video editing needs are met.

The basics of most software programs are the same and so you will not find it hard use most of today’s programs. Don’t be shocked if you see many panes (small, framed sections of the VDU visual workspace) when you open the program. Video editing software usually contains about 8-20 windows which functions separately.

Learn to understand each of the functions of the windows so that you will know what to do. With a bit of knowledge in video editing, you can handle more than just simple editing tasks.

The Movie Maker allows you to work on your videos. You can add graphics and you can also use the audio feature of the program. If you purchase Mac, it is already equipped with IMovie. This is one of the easiest programs to use and it suits beginners. These programs are free; you don’t have to spend anything more to get them.

For those who are not contented with the basic features of the video editing program, you can opt for software ranging from $50 to $300. Professional software packages usually cost more than a thousand dollars but only the pros buy them. The Media Composer by Avid used to cost $50,000 and many pros were clamoring for it because it was still a good deal instead of spending millions of dollars on the editing equipment, but today Avid consumer-level (non-corporate) video editing software is CONSIDERABLY cheaper!.

If you don’t have a computer at home, get one now . You must also consider the disk space of your computer since you will be using a lot of space for video editing. Try to conduct a search online and you will be overwhelmed with the many choices you can find, but some disks stand out.

If you’re not convinced with the free programs, you can purchase affordable programs like that of Movie Studio (Sony Vegas) for only $499 or the Adobe Premiere for $774. According to users, these programs are good enough for beginners. The basics are easy to learn so novice editors will not find it hard to move up the learning curve. Learning how video editing works is just like learning word processing programs or PhotoShop.

As long as you have a computer and a good video editing program, you can create your own videos. Capture memories with your camcorder or mini DV and create exciting videos.
