I don't think Shah Rukh ever was 'King Khan': Aamir Khan
Keeping up his swipes at superstar Shah Rukh Khan and the No.1 slot in Bollywood, Aamir Khan, riding on the super success of his revenge drama 'Ghajini', has said he never thought Shah Rukh was ever on the top pedestal at all.
He also said Oscar-winning 'Slumdog Millionaire' failed to "touch" him. Aamir, during CNN's special edition of 'Talk Asia', was asked how he feels about being termed the new 'King Khan' after the success of 'Ghajini'. He replied: "I had absolutely no intention of kicking Shah Rukh off his pedestal. Though I have to say, I don't think he ever was on it."
Elaborating, Aamir said: "In my opinion, the actor who I really look up to is Mr. Amitabh Bachchan. He is someone whose work I really like, a fantastic actor and the kind of stardom Mr. Bachchan has seen, none of us can ever hope to see." The 44-year-old actor, whose latest work, the Hindi remake of Tamil film 'Ghajini', was a success at the box office, says he feels satisfied with his films only if they turn out to be as they are intended.

"You can never really tell until you see a film with the audience. How it is going to play with the audience. For me, what is important is that when I see the film once it is ready, has it turned out the way we wanted it to? If we have done that, then that makes me feel happy," he said. Aamir, whose own directorial debut film 'Taare Zameen Par', failed to get nominated in the foreign film category at the 81st Annual Academy Awards this year, says that 'Slumdog Millionaire' failed to "touch" him.

"I thought the movie was well intended। It was a very sincere attempt, but it didn't touch me personally, and I suspect it because I'm not used to watching Indians speak English, all these slum kids talking in English... it's strange," said Aamir.

The media loves Salman Khan. Where he goes, tamasha is bound to follow. And Sallu didn’t fail to disappoint.

He came to the sangeet in a blue tee and jeans. When he stepped out at 4.30 am in a white shirt and high spirits, the press and TV cameramen knew big things were about to happen. The action began when a journo unwisely asked if Sallu had got the chance at the sangeet to patch-up with SRK. Visibly irritated by the question, Salman looked like he might pounce on the journo... but instead looked for his car. Nowhere in sight! Any other Bollywood biggie might have gone back inside, called for the car, and then given the driver hell.

Not Salman, he does things differently. Hailing a passing auto, he jumped in beside the driver and asked the astonished man to speed away. The media gave chase. Somewhere along the route, taking a leaf out of Michael Schumacher’s book, Salman asked the autowallah to surrender the controls to him. And he zipped off into the night. The story ended with his car being spotted and Salman Khan giving the autowallah a generous baksheesh. Amrita Arora and Shakeel Ladak, of course, missed the scene... but it provided the extra show to their sangeet on Thursday night.

After four years of its running, popular music reality show Indian Idol finally got its first female winner in the form of Sourabhee Debbarma, who won the grand finale of the fourth season of the TV programme in Mumbai on Sunday night.

Sourabhee, who hails from the Northeast, belted out popular numbers confidently and piped other finalists - Bengali girl Torsha Sarkar and army man Kapil Thapa. She walked away with a Rs 1 crore contract with Sony TV and a car.

The result was based on public voting.

The special attractions of the event were Bollywood stars John Abraham, Katrina Kaif and Neil Nitin Mukesh, who had come to promote their forthcoming film New York.

Others from the Indian film and music industry, including judges Javed Akhtar, Anu Malik, Kailash Kher and Sonali Bendre, too were present to cheer the finalists.

The 22-year-old winner is petite, charismatic and adds glamour to her stage performances with her perfect moves - a plus point she has had since the beginning of the show. However, the girl has had no professional training in music.

She recently met veteran Assamese composer Bhupen Hazarika who told her "my blessings are with you".

Filmstars Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra were adjudged Best Actor and Best Actress for their roles in ‘Jodha Akbar’ and ‘Fashion’ respectively at the 54th Filmfare Awards here.

The award ceremony, held at the Yashraj Studios in suburban Mumbai last night, was hosted by actors Ranbir Kapoor and Imran Khan. ‘Jodha Akbar’ bagged five awards including Best Film, Best Director (Ashutosh Gowariker) and Best Lyrics (Javed Akhtar).

Fresh from his Oscar-win last week, A R Rahman got the Best Music Director award for ‘Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na’ and Best Background Score for ‘Jodha Akbar’.

Critics award for the Best Film was given to ‘Mumbai Meri Jaan’. Asin Thottumkal was adjudged Best Female Debutante for ‘Ghajini’ and the Best Male Debutante award was shared by Farhan Aktar (Rock On) and Imran Khan (Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na).

Sukhwinder Singh received the Best Male Playback Singer award for ‘Haule Haule’ (Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi) while Shreya Ghosal got the Best Female Playback Singer award for ‘Teri Ore’ (Singh is Kinng).

Best Supporting Actress Award was given to Kangana Ranaut (Fashion) while Arjun Rampal won the Best Supporting Actor for ‘Rock On’.

Dev Patel, the 'Slumdog Millionaire' star, will appear on the quiz show 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire' to raise money for street kids.

Thesun.co.uk reports that the 18-year-old Dev will appear on the show along with director Danny Boyle. They will raise money for Britain's children charity - Railway Children.

The 'Slumdog Millionaire' plot revolves around the hero (played by Dev) winning the Indian version of the quiz show.

A spokesperson for the show said: 'We were approached by Railway Children about doing the special and we think it would be fantastic. Danny and Dev would play together, as with all our celebrity specials, but filming depends on their availability.'

A source added: 'Danny and Dev are keen to keep on giving back to the street kids and have been talking to Railway Children about appearing on 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire?' Filming of the special depends on when both are available, as they are in huge demand following their Oscar success. But we hope it will happen later this year. To have Dev back in the Millionaire hot-seat would be brilliant, and would do a lot for the charity.'

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a 2008 American drama film, inspired by the 1921 short story of the same name written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The film was directed by David Fincher, written by Eric Roth and Robin Swicord, and stars Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett. The film was released in the United States on December 25, 2008.

PLOT

On the day that Hurricane Katrina hits New Orleans, elderly Daisy Williams nee Fuller is on her deathbed in a New Orleans hospital. At her side is her adult daughter, Caroline. Daisy asks Caroline to read to her aloud the diary of Daisy's lifelong friend, Benjamin Button. Benjamin's diary recounts his entire extraordinary life, the primary unusual aspect of which was his aging backwards, being born an old man who was diagnosed with several aged diseases at birth and thus given little chance of survival, but who does survive and gets younger with time. Abandoned by his biological father, Thomas Button, after Benjamin's biological mother died in childbirth, Benjamin was raised by Queenie, a black woman and caregiver at a seniors home. Daisy's grandmother was a resident at that home, which is where she first met Benjamin. Although separated through the years, Daisy and Benjamin remain in contact throughout their lives, reconnecting in their forties when in age they finally match up. Some of the revelations in Benjamin's diary are difficult for Caroline to read, especially as it relates to the time past this reconnection between Benjamin and Daisy, when Daisy gets older and Benjamin grows younger into his childhood years

Slumdog Millionaire's Child Actors Azharuddin And Rubina

The Maharashtra government on Tuesday (February 24) announced that the child actors of 'Slumdog Millionaire', Azharuddin Ismail and Rubina Rafiq will be given a flat each. Azharuddin and Rubina stay at the Garib Nagar slum in Bandra East, Mumbai. Both of them played the role of youngest version of the lead characters, Jamal and Latika, in Danny Boyle's Oscar winning film 'Slumdog Millionaire'. During the 81st Academy Awards night on Sunday (February 22), both Azharuddin and Rubina were also present with the 'Slumdog' team.

The Mumbai-shot globally acclaimed film has bagged as many as eight Oscar Awards including the Best Picture. The Oscar Award list also includes the name of Indian music genius, AR Rahman who has bagged two Academy honours for his work in 'Slumdog Millionaire'. Rahman shared the second award with renowned lyricist Gulzar. Apart from them, Resul Pookutty has also won the Oscar honour for best sound mixing in the film.
The success of 'Slumdog' has managed to provide flats to slum dwellers Azharuddin and Rubina. Rubina’s father Rafiq is a casual carpenter while Azharuddin’s father Ismail trades in old furniture. The Maharashtra CM Ashok Chavan announced the gifting of flats from the chief minister’s quota. According to media reports, the Mumbai unit of the Congress party has earlier approached the CM to allot flats for the 'Slumdog' kids.

SRK Returns Home After Surgery !!

No heavy-duty action scenes for actor Shah Rukh Khan for the next six months, say doctors who successfully operated upon him for a nagging pain in the left shoulder. So, in effect Shah Rukh will be on a forced break for six weeks to fully recuperate. However, he will host the Filmfare awards.

On Monday King Khan underwent an arthroscopic surgery for a nagging pain in his left shoulder.
A team of three doctors performed the surgery which lasted for 45 minutes.
He had injured his shoulder a long time ago, but the pain aggravated in December last year.
His doctors said given his busy schedule it made sense for him to get operated before it was too late.
Currently, Shah Rukh has only two films on the floors - Karan Johar's My Name Is Khan and Viveck Vaswani's Dulha Mil Gaya

The Academy Awards were handed out at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. Here are some of the most memorable comments from celebrities at the Oscars.

In one of Oscar's sweetest moments, ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ director Danny Boyle jumped up and down like Tigger the hyper tiger from ‘Winnie the Pooh’ after winning for best director. Explaining his eccentric behavior, the British filmmaker said he'd told his children that “ If this miracle ever happened, I would receive it in the spirit of Tigger, which is just what happened.”

While accepting her best actress Oscar for The Reader , Kate Winslet said, “I would be lying if I said I haven't made a version of this speech before. I think I was probably eight-years-old and staring into the bathroom mirror. This (holding her Oscar) would have been a shampoo bottle. Well it's not a shampoo bottle now.”

Sean Penn smiled and poked fun at his difficult reputation, saying, “I do know how hard I make it to appreciate me often.” He then struck a serious note in urging “equal rights for everyone” amid intolerance. Dustin Lance Black, who won best original screenplay for “Milk” echoed that sentiment earlier in his emotional speech, thanking Milk for inspiring him to believe “ Maybe I could fall in love and one day get married.”

Shirley MacLaine spoke about Anne Hathway while giving away the Best Actress Award. “You're an amazing example for every young actress in this business, because you are not afraid to show both your dark and your bright side. This is your first nomination. I have a feeling there will be many more after this. And by the way, I think you have an extraordinary voice. So keep singing, too.”

Sophia Loren, on the best actress nominee. "For this (career) record, you have had 15 nominations and we behold you, the astonishing, astonishing Meryl Streep."

Penelope Cruz exclaims after winning her Best Supporting Actress award for Vicky Cristina Barcelona, “Has anybody ever fainted here, because I think I may be the first one.”

Kim Ledger, father of Heath Ledger, who posthumously won best supporting actor, “This award tonight would've humbly validated Heath's quiet determination to be truly accepted by you all here, his peers, within an industry he so loved.”

Comedian Jerry Lewis, 82, on receiving an Academy humanitarian award, “For most of my life, I've thought that doing good for someone didn't mean you would receive commendation for that kindness until now. This award touches my heart and the very depth of my soul.”

NEW DELHI/LOS ANGELES: In just one night, film composer A R Rahman equaled the number of Oscars his fellow Indians had taken home during the first 80 years of the Academy Awards.

The 43-year-old composer, hailed in India as the Mozart of the Madras, won Oscars on Sunday for best original score and song, both from the movie 'Slumdog Millionaire'.

Other Indians to collect Oscar gold before him were costume designer Bhanu Athaiya, honored for 'Gandhi' in 1982, and arthouse director Satyajit Ray, who received a lifetime achievement award in 1992.

"I was excited and terrified," the soft-spoken Rahman said as he collected his first Oscar, for best original score. "The last time I felt like that was during my marriage."

He recalled the title of a Hindi film ballad, "I Have Nothing But I Have a Mother" as he thanked his mother Kareema Begum, who made the trip from Chennai, to join the audience at the Kodak Theatre.

He then added a phrase in the Tamil language, meaning "God is great," which he normally says after receiving an award.

Instead of leaving the stage like other Oscar recipients, Rahman then sang his two Oscar-nominated songs, "O ... Saya" and "Jai Ho," backed by dancers and an international drum line with Indian, African, Japanese and Chinese percussionists.

Then he picked up the best song Oscar for "Jai Ho," the title of which translates in English to "Be Victorious." The global celebratory anthem is sung during the Bollywood musical finale of 'Slumdog Millionaire'.

Rahman is no stranger to success in India where he has written scores for more than 130 films since 1992. His fans have made him one of the world's best-selling recording artists, on par globally with the Rolling Stones and Madonna.

He believes music and film can bring people together despite boundaries of race, nationality and religion.

"All my life, I had a choice of hate and love. I chose love, and I'm here," he said as he collected his second Oscar.

Long an advocate of the universality of music, Rahman has called on people to be open to all styles, from heavy metal to jazz to hip hop to R&B.

"I'm really happy and grateful it worked out," Rahman said. Rahman first gained wider recognition in the West when he wrote the score for Andrew Lloyd Webber's 2002 London production of the musical 'Bombay Dreams.'

Thousands of Mumbai slumdwellers root for 'Slumdog Millionaire'

Thousands of slumdwellers in Mumbai, many of them roofless and living beside gutters, are praying for the success of 'Slumdog Millionaire' at the prestigious Academy Awards Sunday, hoping it will change the lives of some of them.

Though a majority of the slumdwellers in Garib Nagar, adjacent to the Bandra railway station in western Mumbai, can ill afford the steep ticket rates in multiplexes to watch the movie, they are still rooting for it. Some 20-odd children from Garib Nagar have played big and small roles in the movie.

Two children who essayed important roles - Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, 10, and Rubina Ali Qureshi, 9, both hailing from the slums - have already become the area's superstars and are being idolised by the young and old alike. They flew off for the Oscars ceremony Friday.

'Their parents are very poor, they do odd jobs barely earning Rs.50-100 ($1-2) a day. Their homes were demolished by the civic authorities almost three months ago and they sleep under the open sky in a nearby garden,' Dildar Bandarkar, a social activist and the area's Samajwadi Party leader, told IANS.

Rubina's mother Khushi has left her husband Rafiq, a carpenter. The little girl has gone to the US to take part in the Oscars ceremonies accompanied by her uncle, Moideen.

The movie by British director Danny Boyle is a rags-to-riches story set in India and has got 10 Oscar nominations.Azharuddin's parents, Ismail and Shamim Shaikh, manage to eke out a living from their furniture trade. There is barely enough for a decent meal a day, his neighbour and friend of over 40 years Yakub Abdul Sheikh said.

'We pray to the almighty that the movie does well at the Oscars. Hopefully, that could brighten the future of these children,' he said.

Naazna Umar Shaikh, deserted by her husband last year, also harbours hopes of a better future as her son Ibat, 2, played a bit role in the movie.

'He was only eight months old during the movie shooting and earned Rs.300 ($7) for a day's small role. I did minor jobs on the sets that day and earned another Rs.1,200,' Naazna said as she stoked a fire in a garden to ward off mosquitoes in the evening.

However, the Shiv Sena municipal corporator of the area, Manmohan Chonkar, claimed ignorance of the celebrity children living in his constituency, Ward No. 90. 'I heard something about these children, but I have not made detailed inquiries, so I cannot say much,' he claimed.He, however, mentioned the name of his banker friend Ganesh Lonkar's daughter Sanvi, who also enacted a role in the movie and has gone to the US.Sanvi's mother Sharmila Lonkar, a paramedic at Hinduja Hospital, said after the movie the children became friends and met occasionally at various events. 'But so far, they have not visited us,' she said.

Sanvi, 13, loves dancing and was selected for a role after a successful audition test.There was even a small 'pre-Oscar' celebration for the 20-odd children of Garib Nagar who have played big and small roles in the movie, Naazna said.'A social worker, Nicholas Almeida, came and gave each child a medal with his or her name engraved on it and certificates. He said this was the 'Indian Oscar'. Our poor children were very thrilled by the gesture,' she said.

M.H. Shaikh, the Samajwadi Party municipal corporator from the adjacent ward, said despite the children's achievement, there has been no official recognition in any manner.'These people are too poor to buy tickets and watch the movie. I was planning to organise a show of the movie for them at some nearby theatre. However, since the elections are round the corner, I am not aware if this may be possible,' Shaikh said.
