Coin collection is not just about having as many coins as possible. More important than the number of coins is the quality of those coins. This quality is measured by the coins’ grade and the grade is measured using a scale from zero to seventy (seventy being the highest point grade). Doctor William Shelby introduced this point scale in his work “Penny Whimsy”.

Here are the classifications of coins according to grade.

1. “Mint State” Coins

This is equivalent to a value of 60 to 70 in the Shelby’s grade scale. This means that the coin has no blemishes whatsoever. Most of the coins in this category are uncirculated, shiny, new coins, with absolutely no signs of wear.

2. “Almost Uncirculated” Coins

The “Almost Uncirculated” coins have a point grade of 50, 55, or 58.

It is very important to note that in these coins, coin collectors must know the locations of the high points in a particular coin. By checking the difference of the light reflected in the high points to the other parts of the coin, an “Almost Uncirculated” coin is separated from the Mint State coins.

3. “Fine Coins”

These can further be classified as” Extremely Fine” (40, 45), “Very Fine” (20, 25, 30, and 35) or “Fine” (12) depending on the sharpness of the remaining details on the coins. The coins are observed to have wear but the designs are still intact.

For “Extremely Fine” coins, the mint luster is still present.

“Very Fine” coins can be compared to coins which have been used for 1-3 years. Minor features of the coins are already gone.

4. “Good Coins”

These coins can be specifically defined as “Very Good” (12), “Good” and “Almost Good” coins.

The coins in this category are worn out. Only weak designs can be observed since the details of the coins in the high points are nearly smooth.

Full rims must be observed for the “Very Good” coins category.

In the case of “Good” coins, the mint mark and the date must be visible.

On the other hand, “Almost Good” coins are the most worn of coins in this category.

5. “Fair Coins”

The coins are “worn out”, but can still be distinguished as belonging to one of the types of coins – as long as one can identify a coin, it is a “Fair C”.

6. “Basal Coin”

These metals that can be determined to be coins – but the kind of coin are undeterminable.

With the classifications described, it will be very easy to grade coins. Just remember that knowledge of the coins’ grades gives coin collectors advantages!

Radio controlled boats are great for the whole family. If you have kids or just enjoy radio controlled vehicles, there are plenty of water crafts available from radio controlled sail boats, to speed boats, tow boats and even radio controlled submarines. Almost any type of water vehicle is available. Here are some tips.

Radio controlled boats are a great way to have fun at the lake or poolside. Today, you can find many radio controlled boats for sale at your hobby shop, online shops and even at your local toy store. There are plenty of radio controlled boats to choose from and many come with great features. Most of the radio controlled boats are usually powered by a battery. Most battery operated boats can be active for a couple of hours and many radio controlled boats can be easily recharged in minutes. Many high end boats can come in the form of gas engines which increase the speed and performance tremendously.

Most boats can reach amazing speeds while performing well on the water. Many boats even include sirens, lights and other sounds. Radio controlled boats are very affordable and start at around the $40 mark. For high end radio controlled boats expect to pay from $300 and up depending on performance, size and engineering. You can also buy radio controlled boat kits where you can actually assemble the boat or ship from scratch. While this can take a few days to a couple of months to complete, it makes a great hobby project for you or your family. If you love the water and enjoy boating on a smaller scale, look into radio controlled boats.

Scarves are a common thing, particularly on those who live in a cold climate. This keeps the neck warm and should be brought everywhere aside from coat that is worn in the outdoors.

The scarf does not always have to be just a plain color. With a little imagination and ingenuity, putting some art into it will be a good idea that will really make it standout.

Scarves can be worn all year round. The thickness of the yarn used really depends in the climate and there are many varieties to choose from at the specialty store. As for the designs, the person can get some reference from magazines, the internet and what retailers bring out during the seasons of spring and winter.

Friends who also do this as a hobby can also help the person decide what patterns to follow and make. Some shows in television also teach beginners and advanced people what patterns are nice to make.

Fashion television is also a good show to be informed for crochet patterns of scarves since the professionals in the fashion world have already spoken about what is in the thing. Some designs that were popular a few years ago gain popularity again so it is best to be updated. These designs undergo a cycle with 4 seasons coming and going annually.

During the first half of the year since the snow has not melted yet, scarf patterns could be on the lighter color of shade. This could be complimented with patterns in stripes, lines and zigzags that is different from the overall color of the scarf.

With the coming of spring, patterns of animals such as butterflies and birds will be a good addition for the scarf. The overall color of the scarf should be light in color. Adding shapes such as triangles, squares and circles will really make it unique.

The coming of the fall season will mean changing from light colors to dark colors. The overall color of scarves could be black, brown, dark blue and gray. Adding small things in between such as leaves, trees or alternating it with light colors will also give it a good look.

This continues on into winter with bright colors taking shape with the coming of the Christmas season. The scarves in general are red but it can come with designs such as a Christmas tree, a snowflake or a snowman etched in the center. Colors used here could be in black, white or green which will really make people take notice of the pattern.

For the person to make a scarf, it will require some yarn. This can be found in the specialty store that comes in plain or in multi-colored ones. Choosing the yarn is not only about color but should also about its thickness.

Living in a cold climate, will require a thicker one for the person to keep warm. If the temperature isn’t that bad outside, getting one that is much thinner will do.

Homemade scarves are nice gifts to give people. The person who made it does the stitching with a personal touch that the recipient will surely cherish. This can be done by knowing the things that the person likes then putting it on the scarf.

Pulling the yarn, twisting it and letting it go around in circles will change the way how a scarf is made. With single or double stitching, or switching it from one color to the next, these are just some of the things that are done to make a beautiful crochet pattern for the scarf.

The scarf is truly a useful thing to have in a cold climate. The person has two choices. The first is to simply buy it off the rack. Since most scarves sold come in free size that may be too long to short for the person then the next best thing is to make one.

This is done by following the pattern done then making one with the right length. If the person wants to really wrap it around, this can go to more than 80 inches long. With practice, the person will be able to make custom designs instead of copying those that are made by some of the leading manufacturers.

For postage stamp collectors, “a stamp is not just a stamp”. The stamp collector often sees a mysterious place as well as an interesting culture the moment one views a stamp from a foreign country that depicts a foreign landscape.
“Postage stamp collecting” is a fascinating hobby that stimulates one’s curiosity in people and places beyond one’s borders.

Here are tips for the amateur postage stamp collector:

On soaking the stamps:

1. Before soaking your stamp, separate stamps that are on any colored paper, stamps having colored cancellations, particularly those with purple or red ink, stamps of very dark in color, stamps that are on poor paper quality, or those with unidentified inks that could liquefy in the basin of water and can stain other stamps. Any “unuasual” stamps should be separated and handled one by one.

2. Trim the paper of the envelope that surrounds stamp, being extra careful as not to scratch or slice the edges of the stamp.

3. When soaking the stamp, take a shallow container with lukewarm water and float in the stamps having the pictures side facing you. Make certain that there is enough room for the stamps to float not to stick to each other. Avoid soaking too many stamps all at one time.

4. Leave the stamps to float until such time that the adhesive dissolves so that the stamps easily slides off the piece of paper. Paper can rip easily so handle the stamp carefully and just allow the water to work on it.

5. Rinse off gently the stamps back in fresh clean water to so that all the adhesive is taken off.

6. Position the stamps in a manner that they are not touching each other on top of paper towels to dry, or old newspapers.

7. Leave the stamps to dry. When they should curl afterwards, place them in another dry piece of paper and place a heavy book on them.

Choosing the right album for your collection:

1. Your very first postage stamp album will be an experiment, except when you have looked at someone else’s stamp album and you believe that type would also be ideal for you.

2. Listen to and take the dealers advice when buying a postage stamp album; do not be completely convinced by allegations that a certain album brand is “the best.” Note that a stamp album that is made by a well known stamp album manufacturer, and is expensive, does not necessarily mean that it is “the best” and is right for you.

3. When shopping take into account all features and aspects such as the albums price, appearance and format and make a wise choice.

4. Good and efficient beginners’ stamp albums are widely available and should be affordable and fully characterized so to point out where certain stamps should go and some albums can even include added information, like maps and data regarding different countries.

5. If you prefer not purchasing those premium albums due to its price, choose the quality carefully. Stamp albums with weak and delicate pages can not endure the tension of heavy stamps when your collection increases.

6. Choose an album with acid-free pages.

7. When buying a stamp album similar to most things, one needs to shop around first and examine it thoroughly before buying. Also do not be discouraged when your first album turns to be not the perfect one for your needs. You always will need a temporary place to keep your duplicates as your hobby expands.

Some popular stamps:

1. The “Treskilling Yellow Swedish” postage stamp is in fact the world’s most valuable stamp. Likewise it is the world’s most valuable “thing” in terms of volume, weight and density.

2. The “Penny Black” was actually the first in the world as an “official adhesive postage stamp”; released on “May 1, 1840″ by the “United Kingdom”

3. The “Inverted Jenny” is a postage stamp from United States issued in 1918 whereby the airplane at designs center, accidentally was printed the wrong side up. There were only 100 inverts found, thus this made the Inverted Jenny among the “most valuable” stamps, now costing about 150,000 US dollars.

Being a postage stamp collector offers diversity in knowledge. Indeed, stamp collecting is worthwhile hobby.

Quilts, though available in a large number of designs and varieties, are by far most highly recognized in context of the patchwork quilt. Many prefer the simple yet elegant patchwork delights over all the sophisticated patterns that the modern quilts offer. Indeed a patchwork quilt is the most popular quilt available today in the market.

Patchwork designs:

Usually a patchwork quilt consists of a top layer that is made from pieces of fabrics, which are sewn together to form an exquisite design. Originally, the patchwork quilts were made from the leftover fabrics readily available at hand. Since fabrics differed significantly from one another, no two patchwork quilts were the same. Very little attention was paid then to the color of the fabrics used. However, the final quilt was as gorgeous as present day patchwork quilts, boast of being. Now -a -days, very rarely left over fabrics are used for making a patchwork quilt, more often special fabrics are purchased for crafting them in elegant designs. Patchwork quilts can be made based upon a large number of designs. The Amish people have special talent for crafting such quilts and their geometric, floral and heart shaped designed quilts are in huge demand all over the world. Patchwork quilts can also be designed based upon a large number of themes and can also be made to depict some historic episodes with the help of intricate patchwork.

Making a patchwork quilt:

A patchwork quilt can be made either by hand or by machine. The basic process of making a patchwork quilt however remains the same. Usually, it is made up of three layers. These layers consist of a layer of insulation and a layer of backing material. All the three layers are quilted together to perfection. Patchwork quits are very easy to make and are traditionally quilted at home in many parts of the world with different styles. These quilts can serve as perfect gifts for special occasion, as their warmth and colour is only second to your love and affection for the loved ones in your life.

Dress patterns do seem to cost a lot these days and sales assistants often do not have the time to advice you over the counter.

Thankfully, patterns are now available for free, in more ranges, to suit every figure type that is based on figure development, built and height.

This is, indeed, a welcome gift especially for mothers who have just given birth, had too many expenses, and could not simply afford to buy newer clothes as the baby grows. Hence, for mothers who know how to sew their own baby’s clothes, it is better to find a free crochet pattern for optimum guide.

Free crochet patterns for babies are specially made to fit and suit the taste of every mother who is into crocheting. Moreover, the best thing about it is that the sizes that were included in the pattern have their won sizes for proper identification on what kind of pattern that will best work for you and your baby.

In addition, there is more than just choosing the design or the kind of design that you will use in order to make a crochet of the baby’s clothing. Any of these factors may affect the total outcome of the product; hence, it is important to choose the pattern meticulously, even if it is free.

So before grabbing the opportunity of getting a free crochet pattern for your baby’s clothes, it is worth getting to know a little about pattern sizes and figure types. This avoids having to alter a pattern drastically before it will fit your baby.

Here’s a list:

1. Try to learn the standard crochet abbreviations

If it is your first time to obtain a free crochet patter for your baby, you might wonder whether the reason why they were given free is that, they do not have the budget for fully defined patterns with full text and meaning. Maybe you have thought that they have constricted the words into 3 to 4 letters just so they could cut back prices on the catalogs so that they could it to you for free.

Funny as it may sound, it is not simply the way you thought it is. Crochet patterns really make use of abbreviations. Hence, it would be better to learn the words so that you would understand what the instruction is all about.

2. Be careful on the asterisk

If you think that there are just too many asterisks in the pattern, it is not. Asterisks are included in the patterns not for the sole purpose of placing it there but because it has its reason.

Asterisk is utilized to indicate the starting line of the instructions, which will be employed more than one time. For instance, if the pattern instruction says “rep between ** three times” this means that you have to work on the instructions for another three times after you have worked on it once. That would be 4 repetitions overall.

3. Be wary on the brackets

Brackets are not used in pattern instructions just for the sake of having them. They are used to elucidate the instructions. Usually, they are combined with the parentheses.

4. Parentheses

These are generally used to put in instructions that should be toiled within the correct number or instances that the instructions are carried out. The number should be stated right after the parentheses.

Moreover, parentheses are used to record the size of the pattern to be used as well as the size of the clothing. It is also used to spell out the directions further.

5. Learn to read “yarn labels”

Reading a crochet pattern would also require you to learn how to read yard labels. Before you buy the yarns that are specified in the pattern, it is necessary that you should know the kind of yarn that is required for a particular pattern, the measurement, “yardage of the skein,” and the fiber substance and the proper care for each material.

6. Choose the hooks wisely

Hooks may vary depending on the size that is being required by a particular pattern. This goes to show that not all crochet hooks can work well with all kinds of patterns.

Crochet hooks have different sizes, which may affect the kinds of loops that will be produced.

Indeed, obtaining a free crochet pattern for you baby is not as easy as it may sound. Nevertheless, if you already know how to read patterns and are familiar with the kind of materials that are being required, it would be easier for you to identify the benefits that you can derive from it.

For some reason, being able to control a miniature boat as it skims over the water of a local lake is something that many people find very appealing. It doesn’t matter whether you are a kid or an adult; remote controlled boats are universally fun. On top of that, nothing is more fun than undergoing a huge and daunting project, and eventually seeing the results come through. Therefore you should consider building a remote controlled boat on your own, out of materials that you can buy from any local craft or hobby store. If you are here, you have likely already considered this prospect. It is more than possible, and probably easier than you would think.

Since you have taken the more interesting route and decided to build your remote controlled boat rather than buy one pre-made, you will have quite a few more challenges facing you that you wouldn’t have run into otherwise. However, all of the hard work that you put into your remote controlled boat will pay off in the end, and you will feel like you have really accomplished something when you take it out to a lake for a day and it is able to successfully navigate the treacherous waters. You will probably be frustrated along the way as your boat falls apart, or even sinks into the water never to be seen again. However, if you persevere you will be glad that you did.

Unless you have experience in the construction of boats, you will probably want to use plans that someone else has created. You can find plans for remote control boats all over the place – on the internet, in magazines, or in books. You may even use the plans for a full-sized boat, and make a scaled model of it. As long as you are confident that the motor and radio components will not interfere, this is a good route to take. Regardless of where you get your plan, you will need one that is utterly clear in every aspect. Even the slightest typo or misreading could result in your boat sinking, or spinning in circles struggling to stay afloat.

As you build the boat, you will need quite a few supplies, first, the wood is a very important part. If you are using custom plans, wood is probably the material you will be working with. You can find quantities of light wood such as balsa at your local hobby store. You should always get extra, since a wood that light is prone to snapping when you least expect it. The wood is held together using glue, and you will start with a hull-shaped structure then plate it with sheets of wood. After it is all done, you caulk the holes and cracks with some sort of putty, then spray it all with a sealant to make it waterproof. After that, you are free to paint it however you see fit.

The motor equipment on a radio controlled boat must have more attention paid to it than other remote controlled projects like cars or planes. If even one droplet of water gets into the electrical components, your entire project will be ruined, and you will have to buy new (possibly expensive) radio equipment. Waterproofing the motor equipment is fairly difficult, and you should always test it with no electricity involved before you actually go out on your maiden voyage. It is usually accomplished by having the motor extend an arm through a waterproof sealant that will prevent any water from getting in.

There are many parts to the process of creating a radio controlled boat, and each one needs to have close attention paid to it. As long as you can invest this time, you should have a great experience. You don’t want the little sailors in your boat frantically tossing things overboard as they try to stay afloat, do you?

A military coin is a small coin that has the military’s insignia or emblem on it. This is a coin that is carried by the members of the armed forces in order to be able to prove that they really are in the Army, Navy, Marines or Airforce whenever they are challenged to prove their membership.

Origins Of The Military Coin

The origins of the military coin is surrounded by a great deal of debate. There are many organizations and services that claim to be where this coin has originated from.

One legend suggests that an Ivy Leaguer who was also a wealthy lieutenant ordered a small, solid-bronze medallions be made. He then gave these military coins to the other pilots in his squadron. This military coin proved to be quite valuable. One of these pilots wore this military coin in a leather pouch around his neck. When he was captured by the Germans upon the damage of his plane, all of his belongings were confiscated. However, they did not see his military coin. Whenever the British bombarded the area in which he was being held, he was able to escape during this confusion. While he was able to wear civilian attire to escape recapture by the Germans, he still had his military coin to be able to prove that he was indeed a Frenchman.

The Military Coin Today

Today the tradition surrounding this soldier’s life have been told to many other people who have also served in the military. For this reason, it has now become a tradition amongst flying squadrons, as well as with other military units in the various branches of the armed services, are now using military coins as well. In fact, these coins are also sometimes used within organizations that are in no way related to the military. For instance, these military coins are now given to members who join specific organizations, as awards that are used to improve morale, they are oftentimes also sold to commemorate special occasions and they are even used as fundraisers at times.

Most recently, President Bill Clinton displayed several racks of his military coins. He received these coins from U.S. Service members. This meaningful event took place on the credenza behind his Oval Office desk. Whenever pictures were taken of him in his office these coins can be seen in the background of his official portrait. This portrait can now be seen hanging in the White House next to the pictures of the other Presidents.

Quilt block structures are regarded as one of the most popular designs in quilts. Though quilt blocks like the nine patch quilt block structure appears complicated to understand, quilter in contrast swear by their simplicity and effectiveness as compared to some other designs. By understanding a few characteristics, we too can appreciate the attraction of the nine patch quilt structure.

Characteristics:

As the name suggests, the nine patch quilt blocks consists of nine more or less equal squares, which are arranged appropriately in three rows down and three rows across. Thus, the basic nine patch block design is divided into three equal segments. Sometimes nine patch blocks are also split to add an extra graceful effect. A number of designs can be constructed based upon the nine patch quilt block structures. This very versatile quilt pattern dates back to the 19th century. Today, the quilts are still designed based on the patterns found in the long ago days. However, the designs have expanded tremendously, as it is now possible for you to either make or buy a nine patch quilt block stricture in a variety of designs, patterns and colours. Some of the most popular designs include the floral quilts, baby quilts, crosswords and many more. Usually, nine patch quilt block structures can be made either by hand or by machines. While handmade nine patch quilt block structures requires more time and energy, machine made nine patch block structures can be made with less time and more accuracy. However, many agree that handmade varieties of quilts have an old world charm that no machine made quilts can match.

Grasping the technique:

To master the art of making a nine patch quilt block structure, you can enroll yourself in workshops and quilting classes. However if you decide to learn the tricks all by yourself, then a few quilt related books can help you understand the basics of this exquisite structure. Finally, you too can create your own nine patch quilt structure easily. All you need is a bit of practice and a whole lot of creativity

Putting together a gift basket for a new baby is one of the most fun things you can do. Little babies take even the most hardened of people and turn them into a puddle of jelly. When a baby smiles at someone, everybody sees the innocence in that little life. People’s blood pressure will go down in the midst of a newborn. Many people wish that the baby would stay tiny and innocent forever. With all of this in mind, putting a baby gift basket together can be very enjoyable.

Some sure fire items to start a basket might be diapers and wipes. Every new baby can always use diapers and if you ask a new mother, she’ll agree that it is a really great gift. Little baby clothes are an excellent item for a baby gift basket especially if you know the sex of the baby. Another great item would be pacifiers. Most babies find comfort when they have something to suck on and it can make them satisfied and quiet. Quiet is a very good thing when everyone around them really needs the sleep. One other item that can be put in a baby gift basket is a two way monitor. By using a two way monitor, a parent can always keep a check on the baby from anywhere in the house. He or she can get things done while the baby sleeps and not be worried.

Bad Ideas for a Baby Gift Basket

While everyone that brings a baby gift basket means well, there are some things that are better left alone. Some may get toys for the baby, but some toys can harm newborns. Toys with small parts are a choking hazard for infants and small children. An individual should look for a label from the toy manufacturer which will recommend what age that toy is appropriate for.

Other items which are not always a good gift idea include shampoos, soaps, and ointments. Babies often have skin sensitivities or allergies and unless it is a very popular brand, it is best to let the parents choose skin and hair care items. Also, it is good to stay away from food and formula items. Many mothers will take their time when deciding on how to feed their infant. Some mothers will choose to nurse their baby and others will not. This is a very personal decision and a mother may be offended if they feel someone is trying to influence that decision. Baby gift baskets are a wonderful idea and with a little effort they will be much appreciated.

Christmas Gifts

When it comes to buying Christmas gifts, everybody has a different plan that they try and stick to.

Some people buy their Christmas presents all through the year so that they are all ready come Christmas time, but most people do wait until a few weeks before Christmas before they start their Christmas shopping.

If you are finding it hard deciding what Christmas present to buy each person, a good way to start is to write down each persons name that you will be buying a Christmas present for and then beside their name write down what they might need or what hobbies they have and then how much you want to spend.

After you have done this, you can go through the different Christmas specials that shops are having and try to figure out what to get each person before you actually leave the house.

This will stop you wondering around aimlessly for hours not even knowing what you are looking for.

When you find an antique coin, the first thing you’re probably wondering is how much does it cost. There are many ways to find out the true value of an antique coin but the most popular way is to receive an antique coin appraisal, either through a collector or an antique dealer. Antique coins are coins that are no longer in circulation. They are old, ancient even, and most of them are very valuable. For this reason, you’ll want to get an antique coin appraisal so that you know just how much that coin is worth. You never know, you could find that antique coin that could allow you to retire early.

What’s In Your Attic?

When searching through your attic, you may come across some antique items. While searching through these items, some people find antique coins. These could be coins that were collected a long time ago and then stashed in the attic, or they could be coins that were once in circulation that were just stored with the rest of what someone determined was junk. Some antique coins can even be found in garage sales, where people sell items without knowing their true value. However you go about obtaining your antique coins, an antique coin appraisal will let you know just what you’ve got your hands on.

To obtain an antique coin appraisal, find a coin dealer in your area. Take your coin, or coins, to the dealer to get an accurate appraisal. However, just as with anything else, you may want to get a few more opinions before settling on one price. When you get antique coin appraisals from several sources, you can better determine just what you’re working with.

You can also get an antique coin appraisal online. If you find an antique coin appraisal website, send pictures as well as a description of the coin. These appraisals may not be as accurate as an appraisal that’s done in person but it will give a good idea if the coin or coins you have in your possession are worth anything.

When appraising coins, appraisers will determine the value of the coin based on what it would be in mint condition. Mint condition means that there are no marks on the coin. Mint condition is what the coin looked like when it was new, or newly minted. If the coin has marks on it, or if the inscriptions are muddled, this can lower the price that the coin is worth. This is how antique coin appraisers determine the value of your coin. If you have a coin that is worth a lot of money, then you can determine if you want to keep the coin so that it can increase in value over time, or you can sell the coin to make some money off your newly found treasure.

Who is a good quilter? Your creative quilting neighbour? Or that highly enthusiastic but clumsy beginner? These question can are still unanswered. However, with a few tips you can sharpen your skills and turn the quilting needle in your favour.

A few tips:

Quilting is an art that evolves over time. To become a good quilter you need to first understand the ins and outs of quilting. This theoretical knowledge can be applied while solving problems related to quilting. The glossary terms also help you shop appropriately for all your quilting accessories like fabrics, rotary cutters and more. ‘Practice makes man perfect’. This saying is especially applicable here. No matter how talented and creative you are, you do need constant practice to help you rectify minor mistakes in time and also enhance your skills in the process. To excel in your work, you need to pay attention to minor details. Tips like buying more fabric, or sharpening rotary blades may sound hackneyed. Nevertheless, such tips make a difference between an average quilter and a good quilter. Good quilters also show some common traits. They are more vigilant, highly innovative and super dedicated. To be counted in as a good quilter, you need to harbour a few of these traits by exercising your mind with new problems and challenges. Good quilters also show a knack or organization and planning. To come up with good designs you need to first ensure that you are properly armed with necessary accessories for tackling any kind of quilting project.

Get support:

Like patch block quilts, good quilters are made up of number of blocks or characteristics. One side shows the technical expertise, while the other block shows their unique creativity. However, the entire picture for an expert quilter is never complete without valuable support from like-minded quilters. Sharing of advice and suggestions ultimately makes that tiny difference between a good industrious quilter and a good happy quilter. So get the support you need and follow your own pattern. You may just be the next good quilter in ‘block’

Since its inception on May 6, 1840, “postage stamps” had been a part of history as it unfolds the greatest line of creations that the society is enjoying up to this day.

By the time the postage stamps were created, the idea of collecting them came into view right after they were circulated in the market. This is because some people have grown fondness with these artistic creations that they have decided to collect them.

For this reason, stamp manufacturers in Canada had realized the values that stamps could bring. That is why they have decided to make their own stamps. These stamps were previously created to reflect the historical background of Canada.

From the well-known maple leaf coin down to the historical stamps, Canada has remarkable created a culture of its own, with the stamps and the coins as emblems of pure classiness.

Since then, Canadian stamp collecting started. From the commonly used stamps up to those that are classified as rare and hard to find, stamp collecting in Canada is definitely a rewarding hobby.

So if you are a Canadian citizen and is interested in starting a Canadian stamp collecting, there are a few pointers that you need to know first before you start collecting those miniature masterpieces:

1. The ability to sort stamps

Every stamp collector, whether a Canadian or not, should learn how to sort different kinds of stamps. It would be better to sort them first before you keep them in your album for record keeping.

The sorting process will based on the of stamp collecting that you are interested in. for instance, if you want to collect stamps by topic, say, historical facts, start from there.

You can even sort them according to their classifications like you could separate the special delivery stamps to those of the revenue stamps, and the list will go on.

2. Learn how to remove stamps in the envelope without damaging them

If you have decided to start Canadian stamp collecting, it is extremely important that you know how to peel off those stamps from the envelopes without damaging even the slightest corner of the stamp.

To do this, you must learn the proper way of soaking. In this process, you will be able to peel off the stamp without any damage.

This is relatively easy because all you have to do is to cut the portion where the stamp is placed, taking extra care not to cut the stamp itself. Then, soak them in a basin of water, side up. It would be better if you will use some tepid water, not hot, as this will ruin your stamps.

Do not be in a hurry when soaking stamps because you might have the propensity to soak too many stamps in one just batch. The idea here is to have the stamps extra room to drift above the surface of the water. Once they begin to resurface, try to pull them out carefully and then peel them off once you can sense that they are already to be detached from the paper. Remove any traces of adhesives at the back, then, place them in between “two paper towels” to dry.

Also, keep in mind that if you have a myriad of stamps to soak, try to change the water every two sets so as to ensure that the stamps would be faster to peel off. To save more time and to preserve any identifiable marks within the envelope, it is best to keep the stamps as it is placed in the envelope. This will make your stamp collecting more interesting.

3. Use the right mounting tools

The nest thing to learn is on how to place your stamps in the album. It is definitely a big NO-NO to place your stamps in the album using a glue or whatever adhesives that you have.

The ideal way is to have them mounted or hinged. The choice is yours, but either of the two will do. These are available from any stamp dealers in your community. Just try to choose the ones that will work best for your collections.

All of these things are boiled down to the fact that starting a Canadian stamp collecting is never complicated once you know these three pointers by heart. The idea of stamp collecting is to keep all your stuffs organized. Once you have familiarized yourself with Canadian stamp collecting, you are definitely on your way to a gratifying pastime.

One of the best variations of crochet is the filet crochets. Its patterns can either be obtained free or you can purchase them from your local crochet store.

Generally, filet crochet refers to that type of crochet that entails a good combination of the usual chains of loops along with the addition of meshes or “closed slabs or blocks.”

In making filet crochet, one should remember that the groundwork of the product is constantly the amount of meshes or blocks contained in the first row. Then, you just have to add six more.

When starting to make a filet crochet, you should always start with the ninth chain on the first row from the hook. This is the common way of starting a filet crochet.

Basically, filet crochet has only two individual colors. The first one is the “open mesh” that is made up of one double crochet, with 2-3 empty spaces, plus a final double crochet. On the other hand, the “solid mesh” that is highly identified by a 3 or 4 “double crochet” stitches that forms a square.

Keep in mind that when making filet crochet, the last stitch of either an open or a solid mesh is the primary stitch of the next mesh as well.

In order to make a good filet crochet, it is also important to consider the pattern that is to be used in the project. Usually, filet crochet patterns are conglomerations of “open and solid meshes,” typically running the design in most of the “solid meshes” and the setting of the “open meshes.”

In today’s crochet market, finding a filet crochet pattern is not such a hard work. You can always find some good file crochet patterns in every local store. With the visible existence of the internet, consumers can also avail of the free filet crochet patterns being sold online.

One good thing about it is that they are free. However, not all free filet crochet patterns are created equal. Hence, it is still important to know how to look for the best filet crochet pattern even if they are given for free. It does not necessarily mean that because they are free, you will just have to settle to whatever pattern you can obtain.

Here is a list of some tips that you can use in choosing free filet crochet patterns:

1. Do your homework

Before deciding on which type of free filet crochet pattern you have to use, it is important that you do your homework first. This means that you have to research on the typical filet crochet patterns that worked best form some people.

There are some instances wherein crochet patterns are too difficult to start with. Hence, you must know what factors that is necessary to consider before choosing a filet crochet pattern.

2. Learn the language

This means that you have to learn how to understand the abbreviations of used in making crochet patterns. Keep in mind that most of the filet crochet patterns that are given for free only use abbreviations.

Therefore, it would be relatively harder for you if you keep on referring to your reference manual about the meaning of those abbreviations. This will definitely consume most of your time.

So in order to facilitate the process, learn how to read abbreviations and understand them.

3. Be wary on the crochet gauge

Free filet crochet patterns should also be evaluated according to their crochet gauge. Keep in mind that any discrepancy on the gauge or measurement can ruin the overall result of your project.

Hence, it is important that before you start with your filet crochet pattern, always make a sample first. To do this, you must make a model of “10 by 10 squares” within the specifications of the thread and the hook.

Try to multiply the amount of squares in the project to that of the length of one square. This will enable you to identify the size of the completed work.

The idea here is to work consistently with the specified measurement or gauge of the free pattern; otherwise, you might only be working on a wrong project.

All of these things are boiled down to the fact that even if some filet crochet patterns are given for free, it is still important to consider some factors before obtaining them. Besides, if you have chosen a filet crochet pattern that will not work best for you, even if they are free, you will still waste some money because of the yarn that you have used to create that pattern.

When one wants to begin giving gift baskets, they should think about the time of year and what holiday is closest. Taking all of this into consideration will make it easier to build a holiday gift basket. One of the easiest ways to put together a gift basket is by having a theme to stick to. It is so easy to pick things up for a basket when one knows what the theme will be. There are many different holidays to put together a basket. At the New Year, any gift one gives should have New Year decorations.

Don’t forget Valentines Day when you’re thinking of gift baskets. It is harder to go wrong with a gift for your honey if you have a few of them stashed in a basket. She is bound to like at least one!

Saint Patrick’s Day is also a fun day to put together a holiday gift basket. Easter is a major holiday and many consumers buy pre-made gift baskets full of candy and chocolate Easter bunnies. For a personal twist, one can use a different basket and along with chocolate, add some personal touches to it. And don’t forget the other holidays within the first half of year. There is Memorial Day, a long holiday that many people use to go on small trips. Give a holiday gift basket with the memory of those heroes that died for the rest of us.

Other Appropriate Holidays

One great holiday to make a holiday gift basket is Independence day. One can put together a patriotic mix of decorations that will go together for a birthday or some other reason. Doing a basket at this time can help those who are just beginning to understand the history of the U.S. In September, one can make a holiday gift basket for Labor Day.

In the fall, enjoy the candy holiday of Halloween. Almost every child in ones life would love a holiday gift basket filled with candy. After Halloween comes Thanksgiving and of course, Christmas. These are all excellent times to put together holiday gift baskets for those special people in ones life. Having to put together a basket shouldn’t be a chore, it should be a work of love that only one person can give that is as personal as the gift giver himself. As each new holiday comes, spend some time to make someone’s life a little more special because of a simple gift basket.

Unique Wedding Gifts

When you are invited to a wedding it is sometimes really hard to think of Unique Wedding Gifts to give.

These days most people are already living together when they get married so you cant buy them the normal gifts such as towels and toasters and the like.

Unique Wedding Gifts can be found is several places, and if you know what you are looking for before you start, the internet is a good place to look. You can actually type Unique Wedding Gifts into an internet search engine and everything that falls into that category will come up for you to look at.

Another place to find Unique Wedding Gifts is at specialty stores. You can normally find Unique Wedding Gifts in stores that sell weird and wonderful gifts. There are a lot of items you can purchase that you may not have considered appropriate before, so take your time and find the perfect gift.

Amateur radio or ham is largely a hobby activity. The majority of thel hobby time is spent on making contact and having conversations with people in distant regions and from different cultures. Two way communications, identifying their location and station, zone, region and place is the usual custom. This is always followed by other casual communications. If the contact is made for a contest to make two way communication with as many stations or ham radio operators as possible, this all the information that is shared.

DX-ing and DX-peditions:
An amateur radio operator’s main hobby is to make contact with as many stations as possible from as many parts of the world as possible. DX stands for Distant Stations. The DX-ing usually is followed with the QSO. (a Q code., see below) which means “a conversation”.

DX-peditions are different in the sense that they are expeditions organized / planned solely for the purpose of making contacts with some special or rare stations and regions. Some people travel long distance just to make contact with some unrepresented region or place.

Radio Frequency scanners available now a days form the tool of great use in these attempts. The radio scanner scans for signals until a strong signal is found and so on.

QSL cards:
The Q code is a standardized collection of three-letter message encodings, all starting with the letter “Q”, initially developed for commercial radiotelegraph communication, and later adopted by other radio services, especially amateur radio. In today’s audio signal transmission age, the Q codes are not essential. but still in use and are viewed as a sort of tradition.

As a part of DX-ing and DX-peditions the QSL card or the proof of contact card is shared. QSL is one such Q-code that means “I acknowledge receipt”. The common practice was that the ones who made contact at a particular frequency exchange a QSL card in the mail to confirm their contact and conversations. These QSL cards can be used as a proof of their making contact and amateur operators who make contact with a certain number of other amateur radio operators in a specified time is awarded. Moreover, they are distinguished and honored since they are deemed to be efficient amateur radio operators.

Remote region contacting:
Some countries have less amateur radio operators, and making contact with these is considered special. So, when a radio amateur from these regions makes contact, other ham operators flock to make communication with this / these hams. Making contact with these less represented places has its awards and special considerations in the award programs.

Hamfests:
Social events for the ham families and friends. It’s something akin to the family oriented social fests where there are sales, exchanges, meetings and fun. Similarly, the fest is filled with selling and exchanging hams, meeting real life ham friends and fun events for a day or sometimes over few days.

Discussion groups and Nets:
Ham operators form a discussion group based on common interests other than ham or it can also be a ham related discussion group and they can form nets or networks.

If a radio hobbyist gets involved with all of these different activities, he or she is sure to never be bored. Look into some of them, and see if you would like to get involved.

In order for the hobbyist to maintain an existing collection, this should be stored in a safe place free from dirt and other problems. Some people encase it in glass while others put it in a shelf. For people who collect stamps, the best place to preserve it is in an album.

The first stamp album was made by Mr. Stanley Gibbons in the 19th century. Though this was primitive back then, this was the best way to take care of it. The problem was removing it since these did not have plastic slips to hold it. After addressing this problem, the modern album evolved.

The album used for stamps is different from those used to hold photographs. Each page has layers of plastic slips on it which can hold a number of stamps per page.

An album can be purchased at the local hobby store or in the bookstore. Since these only have a few pages, it will be a good idea to buy the type that can add more pages later on.

Since the price of albums may be a bit expensive, perhaps ordering it from the internet can save the person some money.

Some albums can only hold a few stamps per page. This is because placing stamps on the opposite side could damage it. Since this does not maximize the number of pages per album, it will be better to get the kind that has a plastic cover in between the pages.

There are many ways to arrange stamps in the album. Those that belong to a certain year can be placed together. If the person has a lot of certain kind, this can also be placed in the same manner.

Some stamps are also grouped in a certain collection. By finding all of these and putting it the album, other collectors will pay more for it since it takes to complete.

Proper care should be given when transferring the stamps to the album. This will require some special tools such as a pair of tongs and magnifying glass to transport it safely especially when it is from an envelope.

Another way to get stamps will be buying it in rolls then transferring it to the album. Proper care must be given at all times so the collector can sell it at a good price.

The stamps inside the album should not be exposed to direct sunlight for a long time and must be stored in room temperature to prevent it from discoloration.

The best kind of album to preserve stamps is the kind that has hinges or mounts on it. This will make it easier to take out when the collector wants to trade it with a fellow hobbyist.

Some albums come separately with the pages that are used to hold the stamps. By picking the right kind that will suit the needs of the hobbyist, the person will have a good time making the collection get bigger.

The album is something that is easy to carry around. Being lightweight, the person will able to bring it to exhibitions and conventions that are venues to trade stamps.

This is better than holding the stamps in the folder or an envelope that could fall or get damaged when it is carried around.

Stamp collecting is a hobby that takes time to expand. As the collection gets bigger, the person has to buy more albums. By finding a reputable supplier, the hobbyist will be assured that the stamps are in a safe place until such time that it will be sold or traded with other kinds.

There are many companies that produce albums for hobbyists. By doing some research on the quality, the person will find the right one to handle the stamps.

People who decide to pursue something like a hobby should be prepared with the responsibility that goes with it. Since taking care of it will require some money, the person has to think of the bigger picture.

The album can make it all happen. By inserting the stamps properly in between the pages, this will really count when the time comes that the collector decides to trade it with other people or sell it and make a decent profit.

Radio controlled (RC) toys can be toy grade or hobby grade.

The toy-grade Radio Controlled devices can be available at a cheap rate in almost every retail store. They are made of non-serviceable parts and are produced in bulk. The toys are not very robust in their speed or abilities. A radio controlled device of one toy cannot be used in another toy. They are not durable and are of “soft” material; these toys are mostly not able to take on the rugged terrain outdoors. They are available in “ready to use”, “buy and play” models and need no assembly. The only thing that will be required is to open the battery case and put in the batteries, and then the toy is ready for use.

On the other hand, hobby grade radio controlled toys are made of durable material, and are custom made. They are mostly simple in their design. The design is simple and can be re-used / remodeled, and can be serviced. The radio controller and the parts can easily be used in another hobby grade toy. They are durable and more robust. They are not always available in ready-to-use state, though there are many hobby-grade RC stores that will deliver the toy in assembled state. Many hobbyists like to buy the toy in parts, and prefer to do the assembly themselves. The design, assembly, and driving of the radio controlled toy is in itself a hobby. The serious hobbyists also indulge in the RC sports that have their rules and specifications, not to mention the winnings which usually will be an enhancement to their current RC toy or another RC toy.

Every RC toy is available as a toy grade or a hobby grade toy nowadays. They can be airplanes, helicopters, boats, cars and robots.

Airplanes come in various sizes and shapes ranging from small flyers to gas turbine driven aerobatic models. The models can be tethered to a fixed pole via rope, or can be free flying models. They can be electrically propelled, or fuel driven models. The latest radio controlled models can reach up to 250mph. RC airborne toys require a high level of knowledge and control, and will need supervision of adults. They are not suitable for younger kids. They are relatively more expensive than the rest of the RC models. This is another reason that younger kids cannot use it safely, since a crash can result in damage that can be too costly.

The RC car is the one most common toy among radio controlled model hobbyists. The cars come in various sizes and shapes and can also be fuel driven or electrically powered. Just like the cars come in various sizes and shapes, so do the enthusiasts! RC cars are relatively safe compared to the airborne toys, and can be controlled even by a child. They can be “off-road” or “on-road” models, referring to the terrain on which they can drive on. The RC car races are common for the radio controlled model hobbyists.

Helicopters: Another airborne radio controlled model. It is different from the airplane in design and flight, and some say that it is much more interesting to fly. However, the same considerations that apply to helicopters apply here too.

A radio controlled boat was the first “toy” to be remote controlled. Tesla demonstrated the remote control boat model which he showed to the public as a device that “obeyed people’s commands”, where in reality it was him controlling the boat according to the people’s commands.

Robotics: These are most popular in Japan, but the popularity is quickly catching up in other nations in the west too. Robotic hobbyists who design, control and model the robotics for various activities are common, and there are various competitions held regularly for them to create the best robot. Robotics however, are actually moving from radio controlled models to the latest artificial intelligence models and voice controlled models. But, radio controlled models of robots are still very popular as toys, as hobbies as well as a safety tool for remote handling of bombs and such.

If you are shopping for a unique gift for the coffee connoisseur on your list, perhaps a customized coffee gift basket is just the ticket. A coffee gift basket can be purchased from a company that specializes in gift baskets, or can be made up by the giver with a few special prizes inside of a decorative basket or container. The choice is up to you, and will depend on your level of creativity and your budget constraints. Ready-made coffee gift baskets can also be found at some department stores, gourmet food shops or at your favorite caf.

DIY Coffee Gift Baskets

If you are the creative sort and you would like to construct your own coffee gift basket for that special someone on your gift list, you can begin your ensemble with a unique mug that suits the taste and style of your recipient. Mugs can be found in all shapes, colors and sizes, so you are guaranteed to find the perfect fit for your gift basket set. Keep in mind that most coffee lovers prefer mugs that are large enough to hold an ample amount of their favorite brew, but if you are buying specifically for an espresso lover, a demitasse cup might be a better choice.

Once you have selected your cup for your coffee gift basket, it is time to move on to the brew that will fill it. The art of selecting the perfect coffee beans can be a science in itself, so be prepared for some hefty decision making at the coffee shop. When in doubt, a blend that is categorized as “mild” to “medium” is generally a safe choice for almost any coffee drinker. If your recipient likes grinding his own beans, bags of whole beans will keep better until used. You can also have your local coffee shop grind your beans of choice for you, but you will need to let them know what type of filter and coffee maker they are grinding for.

Simple Additions

Once you have addressed the basics in your coffee gift basket, it is time to add a few special “extras”, such as flavored syrup for making luscious lattes or a bag of chocolate coffee beans for crunching with a steaming cup. Other good choices are a flavored cream, a package of biscotti or a set of chocolate covered spoons. Put all of your selections together in a decorative basket lined with a colorful tissue or cellophane, and add a big bow and tag as a finishing touch. The coffee lover in your social circle is sure to delight in such a delicious and customized treat!

Online Gifts

Online gifts are probably making up about 30% of all gifts brought today.

The range of Online Gifts you can buy is huge. You can literally buy anything online. There are specialized companies on the internet that just sell Online Gifts, but more and more people are buying Online Gifts from auction sites.

Auction sites such as eBay have been a huge success, and if you are looking at buying Online Gifts, this is a great place to start.

If you try out different auction sites when buying Online Gifts instead of buying from specialized gift shops, you will generally save yourself a lot of money. You may not be able to buy everything you want online, but there sure isn’t much you cant get when looking at buying Online Gifts.

If you try a local auction site you will find that not only can also buy cakes and chocolates online and they will deliver them to you the next working day after you have won the auction. This is a great way to save time and give a special gift at the same time.

Coin collecting is one hobby that is both fun and challenging. To help those who are looking for those rare coins, here is a list of hard to find ones that are worth moving “heaven and earth” for.

Gold coins are something of a rare commodity. They were circulated only until 1933, which makes them expensive when they are auctioned. The nice thing about gold is that its value probably will never go down – making it a good investment.

Another rare coin sought by collectors is the Liberty Seated Dollar. These were last produced some time in the 19th century and are considered to be a rare find.

From 1875 to 1878, twenty cent coins were minted. This coin looks very much like a quarter and since its value is very low today, it is a coin worth looking for.

The Barber half dollars are rare coins that were minted from 1892 until 1915 and are collected by people depending on date or type. One of the challenges that occurs when searching for this coin is finding one in good condition.

The 1917 type One Standing Liberty Quarter is another coin worth owning. It was only minted for 2 years and shows the exposed breast of Ms. Liberty. This design created such an uproar that it had to be replaced and was only circulated for a year.

Mercury dimes were produced periodically during the 20th century. The market value of them is $50 a piece.

The Walking Liberty Half Dollar is a beautiful coin for collectors. They were only circulated for 4 years and are considered to be one of the all time rare coins to ever exist.

The Texas Commemorative Half Dollar is another rare coin. Only 150,000 of these were minted over a 4 year period and just 60% to 80% of these are still available today making it one of the hardest coins to find today…

The most expensive coin is the $20 Saint Gaudens. This was sold in an auction for nearly $8 million. The design is truly superb and the value of it has never dropped even during the 1980-82 bear market.

Rare coins are truly a challenge for anyone who seeks to make this a mission in life. Not only are they hard to find but it they are expensive to acquire. Should a person have the funds available to purchase them then this adventure is truly something worth finishing.
