Sports Illustrated has named the all-boys parochial school on Cleveland's near West Side the state's top athletic program.

The results were based on "sifting through state tournament results for the 2008-09 school year, contacting athletic directors from top programs, examining all-around success rates as well as weighing the importance of producing star athletes and teams that excelled on the national level," according to Sports Illustrated's Web site.

The Wildcats also placed third at the state golf tournament, fourth at the state wrestling tournament and were a final four qualifier in baseball.

Meanwhile, University School won the Ohio High Cup, which is presented by Ohio High magazine. The Ohio High Cup is patterned after the Directors' Cup for colleges, with schools accumulating points by finishing in the top four at Ohio High School Athletic Association state team championships.

University School, an all-boys private school in Hunting Valley, won Division II state titles in golf, swimming and ice hockey, and finished third in wrestling to edge St. Ignatius, 17-14.5, in the Cup standings.

Perella Jr. expands role at Beaumont: Joe Perella Jr.'s duties at Beaumont have expanded greatly since the end of the school year.

Perella, who just completed his second season as the Blue Streaks softball coach, has been named basketball coach and assistant athletic director at the all-girls parochial school in Cleveland Heights.

"I'm excited," said Perella, a former head boys basketball coach at Beachwood and ex-assistant girls basketball coach at Lake Erie College in Painesville and Lakeland Community College in Kirtland. "We've beefed up the basketball schedule but that's all right because we return a great senior class and have a good sophomore class."

Perella inherits a basketball team that posted a 4-17 record last season. Perella has proven he can develop winning programs. Under his guidance, the Blue Streaks softball team has posted 12- and 18-win seasons after it won four games in 2007.

Sito, Bell, Dill honored: Elyria pitcher Tess Sito, Keystone first baseman Taylor Bell and Keystone shortstop Kara Dill have been named to the first team of the 2009 Louisville Slugger/NFCA High School All-American Softball Team.

Sito led the Pioneers to their fourth straight Division I final four appearance and first state title since 2002 by posting a 26-3 record, 0.23 ERA and 331 strikeouts in 181 innings. The Cleveland State recruit also hit .509 with 19 RBI, 47 runs scored and five home runs.

Bell, a Findlay recruit, sported a .414 batting average with 27 runs scored, 26 RBI, 10 triples and 12 stolen and also had a .994 fielding percentage.

Dill, a Kentucky recruit, batted .545 with 13 doubles, seven triples, 38 runs scored and 22 stolen bases. She also compiled a 7-3 record on the mound with a 0.50 ERA.

Announcers clinic set: A football public address announcers clinic, conducted by the National Association of Sports Public Address Announcers, will be held Aug. 15 at Hudson.

Kent State P.A. announcer Jeff Kurtz will be the clinician. The clinic runs from 9 a.m. to noon and is for P.A. announcers who work junior high, high school, college and youth games. Visit naspaa.net for more information.
