by followingLisa (Posted Wed Oct 05, 2011 10:00 pm)
Hi Sally

I have a question for you as someone who has purchased several toppers over the years. No one seems able to supply me with virgin hair that is light brown with ashy undertones rather than golden/reddish undertones. When I ask for ash, no one is able to help me. They all offer to dye the piece for me instead. Today a very reputable vendor told me the there is no such thing as virgin ashy hair.

Do you know why this would be the case? It doesn't make sense to me.

Obviously, there are people in the world who have naturally ashy hair.... and therefore it seems to follow that there would be people who want to purchase ashy hair for pieces/wigs/etc. I don't get it.

Any ideas about this?

Thanks!

Lisa

Read Main Topic

Have you noticed any regrowth at all?

I took Spiro 100mg twice per day, along with Metformin 1000mg twice per day for about a year. Then I wanted to get pregnant so I stopped. Then maybe a year later I started the regimen again but I haven't seen much change. Still shedding A LOT. Have to be patient with this drug though.

What is Qlaira?

Read Main Topic

by Melanie (Posted Wed Jul 06, 2011 9:48 pm)
Thank you so much for sharing your pics... I know that's tough sometimes... You really DO have a good amount of hair especially since your photos show your hair wet... How is the density when it's dry?

You mentioned that you are on disability... is it for a medical condition? You may also be dealing with a telogen effluvium issue caused by some sort of medication you are taking... Not that I'm suggesting you stop any meds, but it may give you a clue as to WHY your hair is thinning and give you options to stopping it...

On the flip side, toppers (like Valentine suggested) have come a long way in the past 20 years to becoming almost undetectable...

Read Main Topic

by Bailey (Posted Mon Feb 07, 2011 10:34 am)
I am so frustrated you guys! I had to stop the pill because my blood pressure was high. I really don't know if it's related to the pill. When I got diagnosed with PCOS over 4 years ago, my bp was high. I had been on the pill, then was taken off of it. They did a million tests to find the cause of my high blood pressure but everything was normal. So maybe it is related to the pill.
So- now I can't take the pill. My doctor recommended an IUD. She was going to have me try the non-hormonal one over Mirena. My insurance won't cover it! So I can't take the pill due to bp, I can't get an IUD due to crappy insurance, and i have irregular periods. So my only options now are the shot (which I REALLY don't want to do) or the mini pill.

Any thoughts on the mini pill? I know it's not the good progesterone but I don't have any other options!

Read Main Topic

by pachmayr (Posted Tue Dec 07, 2010 1:32 am)
I kind of dread posting this because everytime I thought my hair loss started to ease up and said so, it picked right back up. But that's silly superstition, I know. I also know that when I was in the throws of this I hated that so few people ever had an 'ending' to their story. So this is mine (I hope) --

if you read my previous posts you'll see that my hair started falling out in September 2009. I had all sorts of tests, etc. But hair loss is a tricky thing and to pinpoint the cause so that it can be treated is incredibly difficult. I'm not sure if I ever found my main trigger, but the best explanation I can come up with is this:

I had a baby in January 2009 and then loads of stress right afterward. My test results showed I had high insulin levels (slight insulin resistance, my dr. said), and my thyroid was whacked. My ferritin was 10 even though my hemaglobin was fine so I technically was not anemic. My stress level that summer was unprecedented - I really had a mental breakdown, for reasons I won't go into.

I've had my thyroid monitored every quarter now since then (they're keeping an eye on a nodule) and at my last checkup my thyroid somehow went back to normal now 15 months after my initial visit. I have been eating better (though not exercising like I should) It's no longer enlarged, my numbers are fine without medication, and also my insulin level is back to completely normal. I also got some counseling to deal with my anxiety. Just having another objective party to listen to my worries and frustrations helped me tremendously. So my stress level is back to normal. I also have been taking vitamins -- prenatal with 200 IU of Vitamin D in the AM (prenatal for more iron), and then 325mg iron (ferrous sulfate), 500 mg Vitamin C, and 100 IU Vitamin D at night. (I was also nearly deficient in vitamin D). My ferritin is up to 44 now.

Ultimately I think after my baby was born my hormones wen't nuts, which were then exacerbated further by my extreme stress and ridiculously low iron levels. I am happy to say that around September of this year, 2010, my hair loss seemed to slow down. Yes, it still ebbs & flows. Before my cycle I will notice more coming out. But honestly if I had not become obsessed with paying attention to the hair loss, I think what's happening most of the time now would not even be a blip on my radar screen. Now what I'm noticing fall out is probably nothing I would have ever thought about pre-hair loss.

I don't know if this is recovery or what, but I've felt like this is "done" for good now for about a month or so. It had slowed down at times during the 12 months to where I thought I was done, but then it would pick back up. It has been slow now for close to 3 months straight so I'm relatively confident in thinking the worst is behind me.

I wanted to post this to give others out there hope. I know I was desperate to find any glimmer of hope in posts I read when I was going through the worst of it. It's so hard to hear, but really once I stopped obsessing about it it got easier. Day by day. I am certain that my stress level caused me to go into a vicious cycle. My hair loss was likely brought on my physical things, but was sustained by emotional things. It's hard, but if you are taking care of your body and mind together it will eventually come to an end. It may be the 6 weeks I had read about (I wish!), the 12 months I experienced, or the 18+ months other girls have...but it can and most likely *will* end.

I just wanted to post this now from the "other" side...and hope that someone finds it encouraging.

Hope you all have a wonderful Christmas!

Read Main Topic

by mp4 (Posted Sun Sep 19, 2010 2:24 pm)
Thanks Mel!!! I knew I had to post here...so that others know recovery isn't always smooth for everyone.

I do feel reassured by what the derm said. I'm an engineer and like data. My shed has been different from the first awful shed....not as aggressive and no scalp burning. I really just needed to know that there wasn't an alligator lurking in the bushes (ie my telogen count was above 30 (it was 50% after a year of shedding last time) and something bad was going to happen).

I'm keeping my fingers crossed too and trying to just roll with the punches. I'm VERY critical of my appearance... If I learn anything from this experience, I hope it's to love myself no matter what. I can say that I still notice other women (and men) with beautiful heads of hair, but I don't get really self-conscious when I go places anymore...so it's a start!

Ironically, when I was getting my hair cut last month, I was explaining to my stylist that I had long hair for all of my life. I pointed to another stylist and mentioned that my hair was similar to hers. My stylist replied that her hair was extensions and went on to point out 3 other stylists with long hair that were wearing extensions. It was amazing and eye opening! It also made me wonder if I should get some too! It may be the only way I'll have long hair again in the future and it looked REALLY real!

Read Main Topic

by boozehag (Posted Thu Jun 10, 2010 10:27 am)
Anorexia will most definately cause the hair loss, and it will take a while to come back after. Basically when you are not getting the nutrients you need - the parts of you that grow the fastest suffer - thats your skin and hair (and your lining of your mouth stomach, etc - but you dont tend to see them in the mirror) - those cells grow the fastest -totally irrelevant but also why ppl lose their hair with chemo for cancer - as it targets fast growing tumor cells and by accident get the hair stomach lining and skin too...but anyway....)
So your body knows it can do with out hair much better than without muscles, nerves etc, so if it isn't getting enough nutrition to keep everything ticking over - it sacrifices the things that take the most resources/energy (ie fast growing skin and hair cells), and are least essential (to you being alive)....

Now that you have started to feed your body all it needs, it will slowly reverse that process and once it is healthy - it will say, ok, I think the famine is over now, turn the hair generators back on lads....

then your hair will start to grow normally

but given it grows a cm a month (if in the uk its about 1/3 an inch I think)after you get healthy and it starts to grow again it will take a good 4-6 months to get a bit of length to it, so that you notice it. Also when our bodies have been in that self protective starvation mode, they tend to try and stick to it (thats why they always say starvation diets make ppl fatter in the long run as your body slows down everything and tries to hold on to all the calories). In some people it will do a similar thing ie it might take a while after your eating is corrected before your body comes out of self defence mode - and while in it - wont give any resources to non essentials like hair... So thats why it can seem to take a long long time to recover your hair

Id say its perfectly normal what you have experienced - and as long as you take care of yourself you will most likely regain the hair you had beforehand - but gradually.

If I were you I wouldnt be worrying about having any sort of ongoing alopecia - logically you have a known cause of hair loss, and now that you have stopped that cause - you are getting regrowth. So all the evidence says that your hairloss was reactionary and not any thing that will be ongoing.
And as you have already noticed some improvement - I'd bet a reasonable amount that you will regain all your hair eventually.

You might want to do some research on nutrition and make sure all your vitamins/minerals etc you are getting good supplies of, the better you feed your body the faster it will recover. Check out anything that is a building block of protein or collagen ie vit c etc that might speed it up a little good luck

Read Main Topic

by boozehag (Posted Thu Jun 10, 2010 8:14 am)
Hi all

I have been playing around with 'off weft' 'invisible' extensions using liquid gold, and made a video on what I did.

Here is a before and after shot of my hair (or lack thereof)

After doing the video I started thinking about a way to make it even more invidible, and wondered if I could attach extensions that I put into glue standing up, kinda like they do with injected hair into that rubbery thin skin stuff.

Anyway had a go at that yesterday and it is still well attached today - so will also put up pics of that soon.

Invisible extensions for those who dont know is hair extensions using liquid gold adhesive and attaching the hair direct - ie no weft, micro link, braiding etc.

Personally I wouldn't advise doing a whole head this way, but a great way to blend a topper, or lace piece or normal extensions, when your own hair is too fine at the top, front or crown to cover the joins. And my new idea, is looking very promising as a way to just cover up any bald-ish spots!. Bear in mind Im still working on the technique for both and think it can be improved...

the invisible extensions have survived almost a week now with a couple of small bits came out (like less than 1% of the whole - came out when sleeping on it) the rest is holding strong with no indication it is going to let go any time soon...

Here is a before and after (UUUGH at the before) of this technique in my hair:

The video tutorial will be with a password for my privacy, but anyone here who wants it is welcome to it, just pm me

Ill put a pic of the newest method in soon

Read Main Topic
