Don’t miss the peony farm tours in Howard Lake

HOWARD LAKE, MN – If you like natural beauty, you’ll love Swenson Gardens Peony Field Days.

The public is encouraged to stop by between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. May 25, 26, and 28, as well as June 1 and 2.

“We have a number of new intersectional hybrids, with never seen before colors,” said Keith Swenson, who owns the farm with his wife, Becky.

Located at 10958 70th Street SW in Howard Lake, Swenson Gardens is the largest organic peony farm in the United States.

“We have more than 12,000 plants in Howard Lake – hundreds of thousands of blooms,” Keith said.

The Swensons have been growing peonies for about 15 years, and they are looking forward to sharing their passion with others.

“We are only open during these dates, so be sure and visit us,” Swenson noted.

Experts will be on-hand for all peony related questions, and peony cut flowers will be available for purchase. During the tour, gardeners are also welcome to order bare-root peonies for pickup or shipping in September.

“We don’t care if people buy peonies or not,” Keith said. “We just want them to enjoy the field.”

The Swensons love of peonies began as a hobby, and grew into a family business. Now, people from all over the country purchase their certified disease- and pest-free bare root beauties.

Early deadlines for Memorial Day

Early deadlines are in effect for the NEWSPAPER this week due to the Memorial Day holiday.

Ads and copy are due by noon Wednesday, May 23. The paper will be printed early and distributed on the weekend.

The NEWSPAPER office will be closed Friday, May 25 and Monday, May 28.

Sandwich ministry at St.

A community sandwich-making project is planned for 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday, May 24 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Lester Prairie. This is an outreach to inner city homeless. Volunteers and donations are needed.

Community theatre auditions May 22 and 24

Auditions for “Brigadoon” will be Tuesday, May 22 and Thursday, May 24 at 6:30 p.m. at Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted High School.

Men and women, adults and students age 5 to 105 are welcome to audition including participants from Howard Lake, Waverly, Winsted, and surrounding areas and anyone interested in community theatre.

Actors, musicians (pit), lighting, sound, technical crew, set, costume, marketing, and volunteer help are needed. Rehearsals are planned for Monday-Friday evenings in June and July.

Food drive in Winsted this week

The local branch of Keller Williams, a real estate company, will conduct a food drive for the local food shelves in the communities it serves to celebrate RED DAY. Bags will be distributed Tuesday, May 8 to collect non-perishable food items, which will be collected Thursday, May 10. They may also be dropped off at Bryan’s Service in Winsted. Public hearing regarding plats for assisted living at Howard Lake City Council tonight

HOWARD LAKE, MN – The Howard Lake City Council will meet tonight at 7 p.m. at Howard Lake City Hall. A public hearing regarding the preliminary plat and preliminary planned unit development for Terning Trails, outlot A, which is planned to be developed as an “Assisted Living Campus,” eventually including townhomes, a nursing home, apartments, an assisted living facility, and a day care center. The first phase of the project would consist of the day care center and the assisted living facility.

Other items on the agenda include quotes for crack sealing the streets, a grant for emergency alert sirens, a hold harmless agreement with Tim Krueger for removing an old fuel tank from the basement of city hall, and the 2012 wagon train.

Items on the workshop agenda include Memorial Park improvements and a conditional use permit from Wright County Planning and Zoning.
