LPHS learns from mock crash

LESTER PRAIRIE, MN – A car crash scene doesn’t need a lot of blood and debris to be deadly.

“Sometimes, you get to crashes and it looks like everything is fine – just a rear-end crash,” Minnesota State Patrol Sergeant Jackie Sticha told Lester Prairie High School students during a mock crash near the city park Friday.

During the drill, senior Garrett Schultz and junior Miranda Buesing role-played a common scenario of distracted driving.

Wonderful weather for Woitalla Day in Waverly

WAVERLY, MN – Fourth-graders from Winsted and Humphrey elementary schools soaked up some sunshine Wednesday during Joe Woitalla Day on Waverly Lake.

Joe Woitalla of Waverly had been an avid fisherman before he passed away from a heart attack in 1996. His family and friends host a fishing outing for students each year in his memory.

Former HLWW theatre students paritcipate in ‘An Evening of Short Plays’

HOWARD LAKE, WAVERLY, WINSTED, MN – Director Dave Metcalf and the Fungus Amongus Players are presenting “An Evening of Short Plays” in an effort to raise funds for upcoming theater competitions.

Five short one-act plays (roughly 15-30 minutes each) will be performed back-to-back Thursday, May 31 and again Monday, June 4 at 7 p.m. on the third level of the Dassel History Center and Ergot Museum.

‘Making Tracks’ wins two Midwest Book Awards

WRIGHT COUNTY, MN – Ed and Sue Claessen of Waverly came back from the Midwest Book Awards gala May 9 as award-winning authors two times over for their book “Making Tracks: C.L. Best and the Caterpillar Tractor Company.”

The Claessens placed first in the biography and history categories, the only categories in which they entered the book for the contest.

The awards are sponsored by the Midwest Independent Publishers Association, and each book is judged on creativity in content and execution, overall quality, and its unique contribution to its subject area.

Fire departments respond to Millerbernd Mfg.

WINSTED, MN – Firefighters from Winsted and Lester Prairie responded to a report of a fire at Millerbernd Manufacturing in downtown Winsted on Main Avenue West May 17 at about 9:37 p.m., according to the McLeod County Sheriff’s Office.

An electrical box in the break area was found to have overheated or short-circuited, according to Winsted Fire Chief Chad Engel. Also responding was the sheriff’s office, and the Winsted and Lester Prairie police departments.

Holy Trinity graduation Friday, May 18

Founders Day celebrated at Mayer Lutheran High School

MAYER, MN – Twenty-two of the people who founded Mayer Lutheran High School attended a special luncheon at the school Friday, where they shared memories of the past 50 years, and celebrated the school’s mission of “preparing Christian leaders.”

Each founder was presented with an award for support of Mayer Lutheran High School. Look for more coverage of Mayer Lutheran’s 50th anniversary prior to its celebration, which is scheduled the weekend of June 29 through July 1.

Hinnenkamp to leave HL city administrator position

HOWARD LAKE, MN – Howard Lake City Administrator Kelly Hinnenkamp recently accepted a city administrator position in Annandale, which is a little larger than Howard Lake. Her last day in Howard Lake is scheduled to be Friday, June 22.

Winsted native’s leather work is sold worldwide

WINSTED, MN – Brian Gustad, a 2006 Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted graduate, enjoys the outdoors, and especially likes hiking and backpacking because of the “challenge and sense of adventure.”

“It tests my skills and physical ability,” he said. “Some of the most amazing places can only be reached by foot, and that’s what makes it all worth it.”

It was Gustad’s love for exploring the outdoors that showed him there was a need for B. G. Leatherworks, a business he began more than two years ago. That was when he discovered, as he purchased different knives and axes for his hiking adventures, that none of them came with a cover or sheath for protection from sharp edges.

LP moves ahead with street turnback – sidewalk included
