Mayweather tweets next bout in September

Undefeated welterweight Floyd Mayweather Jr., widely regarded as the world’s top pound-for-pound boxer, announced on Thursday that he will return to the ring in September for a re-match with Argentina’s Marcos Maidana.

“#Mayhem Mayweather vs. Maidana 2 September 13, 2014 MGM Grand in Las Vegas Live on Showtime PPV,” five-division world champion Mayweather tweeted.

American Mayweather improved his perfect professional record to 46-0 with a majority decision victory over Maidana to unify two world titles in their first fight in Las Vegas on May 4. With that win, Mayweather added the hard-hitting Argentine’s World Boxing Association belt to his own World Boxing Council title.

“Marcos Maidana is a tough customer and he gave me a fight that had me work for the victory,” Mayweather said in a statement issued later on Thursday.

“His style is difficult at best, but with experience comes a way and will to win. I’m not one to give second chances in the ring, but I want to give the fans what they want to see.

“I will be as prepared as I always am when I step in the ring on September 13. I only see the outcome one way and that’s another successful night for me and my team.”

Maidana made a fast start to their May 4 bout, launching a blizzard of punches and trapping his opponent against the ropes at every turn in the first few rounds.

Though Mayweather went on to dominate the second half of that contest, Maidana felt he had done enough to get the decision at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

“I definitely feel like I won this fight. Floyd did not fight like a man, like I expected him to,” Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs) told reporters afterwards.

Hopkins-Shumenov to fight April 19

Bernard Hopkins will attempt to become the oldest fighter in boxing history to unify world titles when the IBF light heavyweight champion opposes WBA champion Beibut Shumenov on April 19th at the DC Armory.

”I’m trying to force history to write another book on me,” the 49-year-old Hopkins said Tuesday.

Hopkins (54-6-2, 32 KOs), of Philadelphia, already holds the records for oldest fighter to win and successfully defend a title. He captured the IBF crown in March 2013 with a decision over Tavoris Cloud, and then defended it with an October win against Karo Murat.

Shumenov (14-1, 9 KOs) is a 30-year-old native of Kazakhstan who lives in Las Vegas. He won the WBA title by defeating Gabriel Campillo in 2010 and has made five successful defenses.

Hopkins’ long reign as middleweight champion ended nearly two years before his opponent’s 2007 pro debut. Read more…

Spurs keep best record

Manu Ginobili scored 22 points and Tony Parker had 20 as the league-leading San Antonio Spurs beat the Chicago Bulls 104-96 on Tuesday.

Kawhi Leonard added 16 for San Antonio, which won its seventh straight and 10th in its last 11. The Spurs (47-16) maintained their hold on the NBA’s best record, staying ahead of Oklahoma City and Indiana, who both started play Tuesday a half-game behind the Spurs.

San Antonio jumped out to a big lead early, taking a 61-33 advantage into halftime, including 18 from Parker. That helped them improve to 24-6 on the road, the NBA’s best mark away from home. Read more…

Mayweather to fight Maidana on May 3rd – Breaking news!!!!

By Chris Williams: Just moments ago, WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26 KO’s) announced on his twitter site that he’ll be facing WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana (35-3, 31 KO’s) in what will be a unification bout on Showtime pay-per-view on May 3rd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. The decision ends the anticipation and the endless debate of who Mayweather will be facing.

There never was much doubt that Maidana was the more deserving fighter for Mayweather to face next instead of Khan, because Maidana is coming off of a big win over Adrien Broner, who many fans see as “Little Mayweather” and he was very impressive in that fight. It makes a lot of sense that Mayweather should fight Maidana next to avenge Broner’s defeat and show what the real Mayweather can do against Maidana.

For Khan, it’s a crushing blow to his career because this would have been the perfect cash out fight to end his career with. Now Khan will have to try and make up for lost time and pray that he doesn’t have his career ended prematurely by one of Golden Boy’s fighters. With Khan looking terrible even against weak opposition at this point in his career, he could be finished off as a serious contender if he loses another 1 or 2 fights.
