<p>February is American Heart Month.</p>
<p>Did you wear red on February 5<sup>th</sup>?</p>
<p>Whether you did or not, tell me one thing ….</p>
<p><strong>Did seeing red attire remind you to make better food choices at lunch  and then take a nice long walk?</strong></p>
<p><strong>It’s a nice thought, but it’s hog wash.</strong></p>
<p>While searching online for decent heart health education, I have been  bitterly disappointed by what’s out there.</p>
<p>The CDC seems to want to calm the fears of women.  They give specific numbers  for deaths caused by heart disease in men, but no such statistics were reported  for women.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The CDC says that 70–89% of sudden cardiac  events occur in men.  No mention of the fact that heart disease kills more women  than men.</p>
<p dir="ltr">For women they say that heart disease  doesn’t care what you wear– it is the #1 killer of women.</p>
<p dir="ltr">They are playful in their description of  womens&#8217; heart disease, but give men the cold hard facts.</p>
<p dir="ltr">I guess you silly women just need to wear  your red dresses and be aware that heart disease is an even bigger danger than  breast cancer.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Hop over to the American Heart  Association’s site.  You will find very basic information about health and  diet.  “Broil instead of fry, remove the skin of poultry.”  Well duh.</p>
<p dir="ltr"><strong>However, you won’t find the simple  truth:  <span id="more-2115"></span>Fructose is an environmental poison.  Statins cause CoQ10 deficiencies  that are harmful, and contribute to heart failure.</strong></p>
<p dir="ltr">In fact, it’s highly doubtful that you will  find any “tips” on the AHA’s web site that you haven’t heard before, or that are  just plain common sense.</p>
<p dir="ltr">One shocking statement the AHA makes while  talking about their Go Red campaign is that “This will be the first time the  American Heart Association has adopted better health as a principal goal”.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Does that strike you as strange?  The first  time?  In the past their goals have been to save people AFTER they have a life  altering event.</p>
<p dir="ltr">That is a very sad truth.  Let’s hope that  their NEW goal of cardiovascular health will cause them to increase their  Community Services contribution from the sorry 3.7% of their huge 2009  budget.</p>
<p dir="ltr"><strong>Awareness might make wake you up to  the fact that you need to be concerned, but it will take support and solid  information to help you make the changes that will actually protect you from  heart disease.</strong></p>
<p dir="ltr">Is Go Red about supporting women, or  getting women to open their wallets and shovel out cash to donate to the  AHA?</p>
<p dir="ltr">Their financial statement that is included  in the Go Red campaign does not add up.  Then they tell you that you can get  a COMPLETE copy of the financial statement if you request it.</p>
<p dir="ltr"><strong>What is the AHA hiding, and why  won’t they just give you that information up front?</strong></p>
<p dir="ltr">Go Red is a campaign to raise money.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Do you want to arm yourself with  information that will actually address your risk of heart disease?</p>
<p dir="ltr">You won’t get it from the money raising  campaign from the AHA.  They encourage you to get more active, but they aren’t  even telling you that sugar is just as, or more important than fat when it comes  to diet change.  In fact their “Heart Wise” endorsement is included on products  containing fructose.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Please don’t kid yourself into thinking  that eating out of a box is healthy just because the AHA is giving it their  stamp of approval.  In fact, double check every fact that you get from the  American Heart Association.  They are concerned with raising money and they  won’t let the truth harm their efforts to bring in the big bucks.</p>

<p><strong>Something you learned 30 years ago may very well be responsible for  your suffering.</strong></p>
<p>Do you think that purchasing products that are “low-fat” and “no-fat” are  helping you to lose weight and avoid heart disease?  That information is in your  brain because of a study done by Ancel Keys. That study has laid the foundation  for three decades of nutrition science, education and public policy.  The  problem is that the study comes to conclusions that are just plain wrong.</p>
<p>If the label on that can or box says low or no fat, you can bet that the  product tastes like cardboard without lots of extra sugar.  That sugar is doing  more than just making you fat.  It is poisoning you.</p>
<p>Thanks to Richard Nixon’s war on poverty and his partnership with the USDA to  bring down the price of food, High Fructose Corn Syrup was introduced in 1975 to  replace sugar because it was cheap and readily available.</p>
<p><strong>Fructose is even more poisonous to your body than sugar is.  Your  body does not secrete insulin to digest fructose, because it is not recognized  as a food.  Fructose has to be processed by your liver. </strong></p>
<p>Bio-chemists know that the way your body reacts to fructose is all the  evidence needed to prove that fructose is a poison rather than a food.</p>
<p>“Hey wait, the commercials on television say that moderate use of fructose is  ok!”</p>
<p>I’ve seen that commercial.  You need to be aware that it is not safe.  It has  never been tested safe.  There is no evidence that it is in fact safe.  As well,  since it is in EVERYTHING you are using it more than moderately.</p>
<p>Fructose contributes to insulin resistance and weight gain.  That is why  diabetes is SO much more prevalent today than it was 30 years ago.  The way  fructose is metabolized, a high fructose diet is worse than a high fat diet.</p>
<p>Chemicals disguised as foods just do not nurture you.</p>
<p><strong>So <a href="http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2010/01/26/Sugar-May-Be-Bad-But-This-Sweetener-Is-Far-More-Deadly-Part-2.aspx" target="_blank">What Causes Diabetes</a>?<span id="more-2107"></span></strong></p>
<ul>
<li>sugared beverages are the main culprit</li>
<li>eating sweets minus fiber assaults your system</li>
<li>second helpings before waiting for the signal that your system is satisfied  will guarantee that you will over eat</li>
<li>sitting still for prolonged periods causes unhealthy blood sugar levels</li>
<li>stress and illness raise blood sugar levels (this does not necessarily mean  you have diabetes)</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Want to avoid Diabetes?</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>drink water or milks instead of sweet drinks</li>
<li>eat fruit to satisfy your sweet tooth</li>
<li>wait at least 20 minutes before you fill your plate a second time</li>
<li>earn screen time (television, video game, or computer) with an equal amount  of active time</li>
<li>practice relaxing, it is an important part of controlling blood  sugar</li>
</ul>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Why is exercise so important for healthy blood sugar levels?</span></p>
<ul>
<li>Because it improves skeletal muscle insulin sensitivity</li>
<li>Because it reduces stress and resultant cortisol release</li>
<li>Because it improves your metabolism and detoxifies your body of  fructose</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Remember that the more HFCS you eat the less success you will see  with diet and exercise for weight loss.</strong></p>
<p>Look, don’t kid yourself into thinking that the FDA will protect you.  The  FDA only regulates acute poisoning.  That means an instant reaction to food.   HFCS causes insulin resistance and the resulting suffering involved only after  you eat many doses of this poison.</p>
<p><strong>The FDA does not regulate chronic poisoning.</strong></p>
<p>Fructose isn’t metabolized by the brain, it’s metabolized by the liver.  The  FDA knows that signs of poisoning will not be immediate, so they protect profits  instead of “harming the economy” by alerting the public to a poison in all  of your favorite junk foods.</p>
<p>Those are the facts.  You can protect yourself and your loved ones by reading  labels, and choosing not to poison yourself.  Or better yet, injest foods the  way mother nature packages them, complete with fiber and nutrients you need.</p>
<p>Then get plenty of fun activity in your day so that you create some insulin  sensitivity.  Bodies in motion stay in motion, coach potatoes have already  assumed the daisy pushing position.  Inactivity is a big part of <a href="../solutions/diabetes/do-you-eat-too-much-sugar">what  causes diabetes</a> and weight gain.</p>
<p>Even if you don’t feel like it, you are worth it!  If exercise could be fun,  what would that look like to you?</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Why should you devote time to meditation?</span></p>
<p>Meditation is a powerful stress management tool and it has a very powerful  effect on your blood sugar levels.</p>
<p><strong>You are also much more likely to make better food choices and fit  activity into each day if you devote time to relaxation.</strong></p>
<p>You actually have to work at relaxing to get anywhere.  Hanging out in front  of the television does not allow you to release tension.</p>
<p>Sit tall with your head on top of your spine, or lie down and relax every  muscle for at least a few minutes everyday.  Just wait for your next  thought.</p>
<p>Check in with yourself on a regular basis and practice creating a relaxed  state.  Over time you will begin to notice how much tension you carry  around.</p>

<p><strong>Dr. Dwight Lundell is a heart surgeon who has seen more than his fair  share of heart disease.  He knows plenty about the patients he cuts open, and he  says that cholesterol is not the concern.</strong></p>
<p>If Dr. Lundell says that <a href="../solutions/cholesterol-solutions/can-you-really-lower-cholesterol-naturally">lowering  cholesterol</a> is NOT your answer, you owe it to yourself to find out why.</p>
<p>Over 25% of the population is taking statin medications because they are VERY  concerned about the health of their heart due to bad cholesterol numbers.  There  is also a push to begin prescribing these drugs to otherwise healthy people  without elevated cholesterol levels.</p>
<p>If statins prevent heart disease, why is heart disease increasing year after  year and kills more people than every other cause of death combined?<span id="more-2072"></span></p>
<p>The cholesterol theory has more to do with selling lots of drugs and making a  ridiculous amount of money than it does heart disease prevention!</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Lundell says that inflammation is the cause  of heart disease! </strong></p>
<p>He also says that the very dietary recommendations born of the  anti-cholesterol movement for no-fat and low-fat foods, CAUSES inflammation.</p>
<p><strong>Yep, you read that right.  Low-fat and no-fat foods cause  inflammation which causes heart disease!</strong></p>
<p align="left">Polyunsaturated Omega-6 oils; packaged and processed foods created  for shelf life, rather than prolonging your life; sugars and simple  carbohydrates create inflammation. This IS the cause of the epidemic of heart  disease, obesity and other chronic illnesses.</p>
<p align="left">So why does your doctor prescribe statins for you, and even  pressure you into taking them to protect against heart disease by <a href="http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/cholesterol/CL00002" target="_blank">lowering cholesterol</a>, if cholesterol is not the problem?</p>
<p align="left">Because, he is doing what he was trained to do … drug  symptoms.</p>
<p align="left"><strong>If cholesterol isn’t the problem, is testing your levels  really helpful?</strong></p>
<p align="left">A much more prudent test would be one that measures the level of  inflammation in your body, a simple C-reactive protein test.</p>
<p>Do you plan to stick your head in the sand and hope that your doctor knows  enough to protect you from heart disease?  Taking a pill sure sounds a whole lot  easier than making changes you don’t want to make, but that pill may actually  cause your death!</p>
<p>One fact you can not argue with is that statins cause the depletion of  Co-enzyme Q10.  Deplete your Co-Q10 and you will weaken your muscles.  Your heart  is a muscle.  How much quality of life will you have with a weak heart  muscle?</p>
<p><strong>Low cholesterol levels are also very dangerous!</strong></p>

<p>If you have sleep apnea (you stop breathing while you sleep) a <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZTzrVGSOvw" target="_blank">sleep study</a> can most definitely save your life.  However, if you don’t apply the treatment  to prevent your sleep apnea, then the sleep study is worthless!</p>
<p><strong>Sleep apnea is deadly!</strong></p>
<p>When you stop breathing during your sleep, your oxygen level drops robbing  your body of this life giving nutrient, but that isn’t the worst part.</p>
<p>When you stop breathing, your carbon dioxide level climbs causing an acidic  condition in your body that literally fries your brain and all your internal  organs!</p>
<p><strong>If you are ignoring your sleep apnea, you MUST be aware that you are  risking your life!</strong></p>
<p><strong>Got a death wish?</strong></p>
<p>Sleep apnea will cause:<span id="more-2050"></span></p>

<li>depression, simply because your body is not getting the chance to replenish  and restore itself.</li>

<li><strong>spontaneous death from vagal stimulation when your oxygen level  drops too low!</strong></li>

<p>Sounds serious doesn’t it?</p>

<p><strong>We have already discussed Step 1, Getting Started, and Step 2,  Knowing Your Limits; and as long as you are getting into motion habitually and  honoring your limits while you stretch them, the only step left is to Keep  Moving!</strong></p>
<p>It’s really just that simple.</p>
<p>That doesn’t mean that you should beat yourself up if you fall off of your  program!  Hey, if you get back up tomorrow, and have an active day, then you are  on the right track!  Allow yourself your resistance, BUT get past it and get  moving again!</p>
<p>You haven’t given up until you don’t get back up again!  The longer you wait  to get moving again, the harder it will be to get back up!</p>
<p><strong>Getting back on your program is VICTORY!</strong></p>
<p>All that is required is that you keep on going!  If you can do that, you will  see results.</p>
<p>Don’t feel like you need to kill yourself.  You should be able to talk  comfortably while you move.  Respect your limits and you will not deplete  yourself.</p>
<p>If your health is already compromised,<span id="more-2044"></span> you may not be able to do much at  first.  No problem!  As long as you engage in sustained activity daily, taking  care to honor your limits, you WILL improve and feel better!</p>
<p><strong>Feeling better and having more energy is all you will need to  continue working at it! </strong></p>
<p>Set yourself up for success.  Giving your best effort everyday IS success.</p>
<p><strong>It really is just that simple!</strong></p>

<p>2010 has begun!  In a hurry to get in shape?</p>
<p><strong>You’ve already made your first mistake.</strong></p>
<p>If 2009 wasn’t an active year, your pace should be slow and steady in 2010.   Consistency is the way to achieve ALL your fitness goals.</p>
<p><strong>Pushing yourself might just be your undoing.  Do you know that the  first sign of heart disease is often a heart attack?</strong></p>
<p>So, what is your motivation for wanting to get in better shape?  Do you have  major health concerns, a family history of heart disease, or do you just want to  look better this year?</p>
<p>Your motive for getting in shape might drive you, that’s not a bad  thing.  Just don’t make immediate results be the measure of your success.  <span id="more-2024"></span> Whether you’re hoping to look better, feel better or both, the secret is  to commit to being active for the rest of your life.</p>

<p>Just being active every single day IS success.  It is measurable!  Keep a  journal of how you feel and the thoughts you are thinking each day.</p>
<p>You will notice that your thoughts will be lighter and more positive as you  get moving and let all your stiff rigidity melt away.</p>
<p>When you are inflexible and rigid in your life you stifle your creativity and  harm your relationships with others.  That isn’t hard to see.</p>
<p>What you may not be noticing is that the stiffness in your body is harming  your creativity and your relationship with yourself.</p>
<p>It’s hard to love yourself when you are ignoring your needs and suffering the  consequences.  Get active and your body will love you for it.</p>

<p><strong>Heart failure is increasing at an alarming rate in the US and around  the world.</strong></p>
<p>You should be MUCH more concerned about heart disease than any other health  issue, because you are more likely to die of <a href="http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/heartfailure.html" target="_blank">heart  disease</a> than any other health concern you may have!</p>

<li><strong>most women who have a heart attack succumb to heart failure within  one year.</strong></li>
<li>heart failure is very difficult to diagnose, so you may not even hear the  term until you are fighting for your life in intensive care.</li>
<li><strong>the CDC says that 20% of patients die within one year of a heart  failure diagnosis, and 50% die within five years.</strong></li>
<li>young people are also succumbing to heart disease, including heart  failure.</li>

<p>No matter what you want to accomplish in the new year, it is all about  greater happiness, isn’t it?</p>
<p>I am hoping that your New Year’s Resolution is not the only goal you set this  year.  Goal setting is something I do on a regular basis, and I’ve taught my  children to do it.</p>
<p>If life is worth living, it is worth setting goals, achieving them  and celebrating your success!</p>
<p><strong>Do you have any goal in your goals journal that is NOT about greater  happiness?</strong></p>
<p>So what is it about your New Years Resolution that makes it different from  all your other goals?</p>
<p>If you are like most of us, your <a href="http://www.squidoo.com/newyears" target="_blank">New Year’s Resolutions</a> is probably one of the goals that you  never find the time to get to!</p>
<p>The “To Dos” that nag at us are the ones that we know we SHOULD get to.  When  we don’t, we beat ourselves up.</p>
<p><strong>Bad habits are at the top of the list of things we never get around  to tackling.</strong></p>
<p>Don’t overwhelm yourself.  If you have more than one bad habit you’d like to  get rid of … <span id="more-2004"></span>prioritize and battle one habit at a time.</p>
<ul>
<li>Find a good-for-you activity to focus on.</li>
<li>Combine a “don’t do” goal with a “do it” goal.</li>
<li>When you stop doing something destructive, it’s helpful to put your focus on  something you CAN do, to help you stop dwelling on what you are trying NOT to  do.</li>
</ul>
<p>If you want to stop smoking, START walking!  Weight gain is a common worry  when you stop sucking butts, but if you get moving you are likely to be  encouraged by the changes in your body.</p>
<p>Encouragement is a great way to stick with a purification plan!</p>
<p><strong>Polluting your body FEELS BAD!</strong></p>
<p><strong>Nurturing your body FEELS REALLY  GOOD!</strong></p>
<p>Feeling good is a really great motivator!  If you put your health goals at  the top of your priority list, ALL of your goals will be a LOT easier to  reach!</p>

<p>You must be wondering what happened to me!</p>
<p>It has been far too long since I plugged in and connected with you!</p>
<p><strong>Let me assure you that you have been on my mind daily!</strong></p>
<p>I am always thinking about things I want to share with you and information  that is important for you to be aware of.</p>
<p>There is SO much going on in my life with running my business, single  parenting my children, and the increased chaos from the holidays!  Overwhelm is  down right depressing!</p>
<p>I’m not about to head to my doctor and see what kind of medication he can  give me to mask my symptoms of depression.</p>
<p><strong>Depression is my personal rival! </strong></p>
<p>Overwhelm gets to the best of us, but when you begin to experience symptoms  of depression, it’s time to nurture yourself and reach out to your support  system.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Do you know the symptoms of depression?<span id="more-1968"></span></span></p>
<ul>
<li>you can’t sleep or you sleep too much</li>
<li>you can’t concentrate</li>
<li>negative thoughts bombard your thinking</li>
<li>loss or increase of your appetite</li>
<li>you are more irritable and short-tempered than usual</li>
<li>unexplained aches and pains</li>
<li>feelings like life isn’t worth the struggle (get help immediately in this  case!)</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>What can you do to combat depression?</strong></p>
<p>The drug companies want you to believe that the treatment for  depression STARTS with medication.  Since medication is NOT without risk, PLEASE  explore alternatives BEFORE medicating your <a href="../solutions/depression-solutions/your-symptoms-of-depression-are-big-business-why-should-that-concern-you">symptoms  of depression</a>, unless you feel that you are a danger to yourself or others.   If you choose to use medication, make sure you tell your family to be alert for  suicidal behaviors and worsening of your depression.  Psychiatric meds tend to  increase these feelings.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Do you know what you can do to help yourself?</span></p>
<ul>
<li>laugh! funny movies or joke books might do the trick</li>
<li>help someone else by volunteering</li>
<li>ask someone to check in with you regularly</li>
<li>go for a walk, regular exercise in any form is VERY helpful</li>
<li>spend time in nature</li>
<li>soak in a hot tub</li>
<li>confide in a close friend about your feelings</li>
<li>meet new people by joining a club or taking a class</li>
<li>schedule a weekly date with friends or one special person</li>
<li>find out if you need to supplement vitamin D by having your level  checked</li>
</ul>
<p>I’ve been taking measures to address my <a href="http://www.helpguide.org/mental/depression_tips.htm" target="_blank">symptoms of depression</a>.  When I picked up the phone and called  a friend, she said something that had such a profound effect on me that taking  action to nurture myself has become MUCH easier.</p>
<p><strong>Do you want to know what my friend said to me that helped so  much?</strong></p>

<p>Killing off cells sure won&#8217;t build health.</p>
<p>If your oxygen level falls low enough, it can stimulate your vagus nerve and  cause your heart to stop.</p>
<p>Got that?</p>
<p><strong>If you are ignoring your <a href="../oxygen/what-does-low-oxygen-level-feel-like">low  oxygen level</a>, you are risking DEATH!</strong></p>
<p>Ask your family to tell you if your lips are blue.  While you’re asking, find  out if they think you have short term memory loss.</p>
<p>How was your last eye exam?  Were your eyes worse?</p>
<p><strong>Do you know what you need to about YOUR <a href="http://www.healthydoctors.com/newsletters/healthydoctors%20insight%20newsletter%20article%20oxygen-is-crucial-for-good-health.htm" target="_blank">blood oxygen level</a>?<span id="more-1949"></span></strong></p>
<p><strong> </strong></p>
<p>1. When blood oxygen levels fall below 92% saturation, the pressure of the  oxygen within your blood is too low to penetrate the walls of the red blood  cells.</p>
<ul>
<li>It wont do you any good to argue with science and gas laws.</li>
</ul>
<p>2. Your insurance company will not pay for oxygen unless your levels fall to  88% oxygen saturation.</p>
<ul>
<li>This has nothing to do with what is best for you, it is just the point at  which your insurance is willing to pay for your home oxygen use.</li>
</ul>
<p>3. Every time your blood oxygen level falls below 92% saturation the cells of  your body are oxygen starved. If your level falls low enough it could stimulate  your vagus nerve and KILL you.</p>
<p>4. Low oxygen levels may be present only at certain times.</p>
<p>There are various situations that may cause low oxygen level:</p>
<ul>
<li>when retaining excessive fluid</li>
<li>when airways are tight and wheezy</li>
<li>with respiratory illness, or advancing lung disease</li>
<li>sleep apnea</li>
<li>about 3:00am when you wake gasping for air</li>
<li>with activity when the heart muscle has become weak</li>
<li>while bending over or kneeling down</li>
<li>sudden onset of Heart Failure</li>
</ul>
<p>5. Recurring low blood oxygen levels are harmful and should be prevented with  supplemental oxygen if<br />
possible.</p>
<ul>
<li>The problem is that your doctor may not witness your oxygen levels at 88%,  and if he/she doesnt see it he/she won&#8217;t order it.</li>
<li>Another big challenge is that portable oxygen use is inconvenient and you  may avoid using it.</li>
<li>Untreated low oxygen levels rob your eye sight, short term memory, and your  strenghth.</li>
</ul>
<p>6. Many doctors give misinformation about oxygen because they don&#8217;t  understand the importance of meeting oxygen need themselves.</p>
<p>Your doctor may tell you dangerous misinformation you should NEVER  believe:</p>
<ul>
<li>Using oxygen will make your lungs weak is NOT a true fact</li>
<li>Using oxygen too much will make you need it more is NOT a true fact!</li>
<li>You only need oxygen when you feel like you need it is NOT a true fact!</li>
<li>If your oxygen level is low you will get used to it is NOT a true fact</li>
<li>You don&#8217;t need oxygen unless your saturation is lower than 88% is NOT a true  fact! You need oxygen if your levels fall below 92%!</li>
</ul>
<p>7. Even if your blood oxygen saturation is NOT low you CAN benefit from  using supplemental oxygen with activity!</p>
<ul>
<li>Whether your blood oxygen level is dangerously low, or in the normal range,  getting your heart rate up while using supplemental oxygen will help you to  utilize oxygen better, and that WILL make you feel better!</li>
</ul>
<p>It has been a while since I last posted on this subject, but it is such an  important issue for anyone effected by it.</p>
<p>Heart Failure is inevitable if you are living with low oxygen level.  You may  not even be aware of it, but the consequences of ignoring it are harsh.</p>

&lt;p&gt;Halemaumau vent sure does spit out some yuck!  No end in sight.  The volcanologists say it will be years before the vog out put slows.
