How would you like to be more creative, solve your problems and become a better writer, too?

On our Heart of Success Blogtalk radio show this week, we discussed with writer/consultant Mark Levy about Freewriting. He shared insights from his new book, Accidental Genius: Using Writing to Generate Your Best Ideas, Insight and Content.

You can use freewriting for articles, books and scripts, and much much more. It’s a way of tapping into your unconscious and the “morphic field” of whatever you focus on in your writing. You  need not share your writing, like a jounal or a private brainstormsing. In any event, powerful results can emerge.

Here are some key points about freewriting:

* Time your writing (say 5- 20 minutes)

* Start with a topic, say “success” and just keep writing, non-stop. If you get stuck, keep writing about being stuck. If you digress, continue on. Then when you’re ready, relate  back to your original topic, including any insights from your digression.

* Write as fast as possible (or type on computer). Sci-fi writer Ray Bradbury noted, “In quickness, there is truth.” The idea is to bypass your internal editor to free up ideas. Later on, you can edit and evaluate what you wrote.

* Don’t stop writing to review or correct anything. Stick with the timer.

* Just be honest and let whatever you connect with come out.

* You can do a second round of freewriting based on what you wrote.

Writing is different from thinking. Thinking about a subject can be limiting as your thoughts can easily loop back.

Freewriting expands your mind. You never know when original ideas, solutions and creative impulses will emerge. Each sentence is a stepping stone for the next.

The idea of becoming an expert draws a wide range of responses – from eager pursuit to outright rejection. Let’s look at what it means to be “an expert” to shed some light on the matter.

To start, here’s a definition: “An expert is a person with a high degree of skill in or knowledge of a certain subject.”

Myth 1: Becoming an expert feeds your ego.

Being an expert can be about external show, glitz and glamour. That is why some say they don’t want or need recognition.

Yet (healthy) self-esteem is considered a need, like food and shelter. In addition, we all do have gifts and talents. If you share what you have to offer, you will naturally be considered something of an expert. It’s up to you whether people recognizing your expertise feeds the ego or not.

Sharing your “expertise” helps fulfill you and those you help. Actually, doesn’t it feel good to be recognized and appreciated for the good things you provide?

Myth 2: Becoming an expert is irrelevant.

The underlying assumption here is that, “I’m here to help others — and I don’t need some external label. I don’t need to be considered ‘expert so and so’ to be of value.” It’s true that your value does come from within.

To live fully, it’s important to connect the inner with the outer. Life is about becoming a conscious success through the actions you take. This outer success lets others know you have gifts and skills that can help them.

What then does being an expert have to do with genuine fulfillment and helping others? To be more effective and get your message out, it’s essential to let others know. Becoming an expert naturally results.

Yes, some people are “natural” promoters. And yes, some people over promise and under deliver.

Nonetheless, it’s still important to share your gifts and offerings with the world. Then you work on all cylinders, combining inner and outer success.

As you become more of an expert, you share your gifts more abundantly. Some may have roles to help a larger number of people than others. Regardless, each person’s journey is unique and precious. Becoming an expert can be a fun and important part of the journey.

Myth #3: The Law of Attraction will take care of everything for me.

The Law of Attraction (LoA) contains powerful truths. However, if you use it simply to “wish upon a star” for your success, you will probably be disappointed. Let’s clarify:

To attract those good things to you, it’s essential to get your beliefs aligned with what you want. Otherwise, unconscious stuff gets in the way (like a belief that, “I’ll get hurt if I stand out”).

In addition to clearing negative beliefs, here is another essential part of how to have the LoA work. Take strategic action to manifest what you want. With strategic action, you become quite efficient and successful. You gain “expertise.”

If you want to succeed, becoming an expert in something you enjoy is a natural progression.

Just relying on word of mouth and a wishful Law of Attraction to succeed is not a good long-term approach. It takes getting clear on what you want. It also involves planning and strategies, aligned with your goals and purpose.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Say you had a problem or need. To whom would you go for help? Wouldn’t you look for an expert?

And how did that person become considered an “expert”? It goes something like this…

You start out with gifts (inner success). Over time you develop skills to expand your talents. You then learn to communicate your specialty to those who are interested (outer success).

So if you go to experts when you’re in need, why not become one yourself in your chosen area?

You already have much of the innate gifts and passions. With training in personal and business skills, you become a person that can make a bigger difference. You become the expert.
