In a recent career article displayed on Yahoo! Hot Jobs by Doug White, he describes certain “accomplishments” that are not worth the mention. In our line of work, assisting home care and hospice companies in finding the right candidates, we review resumes on a daily basis. We come across a wide variety of resumes ranging from simplistic to detailed, with basic to stylized formats, and a multitude of arrangements of the pertinent information. It has been said that very little time is given to each resume so it is important to grab the human resource professional’s attention right off the bat. That being said, it is so important to highlight what you can offer an employer and how you fit the description of the ideal candidate. Therefore, your community involvement would not necessarily be of any interest to the reader, nor would organizational affiliations that do not apply to the industry you are looking to enter. Be strategic with what you decide to include on your resume because you are trying to market yourself and have very little time to accomplish your pitch.

Share your thoughts and opinions, we’d love to know what you think!

According to NHPCO’s (National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization) Director of Public Policy, Angie Truesdale reports the hospice community is “looking at approximately $10 to $12 billion taken away from the national investment in end-of-life care over the next ten years.” In her opinion, “the combined impact of the cuts could be too much for the hospice community to withstand as we struggle to provide high-quality and compassionate care to an aging population…” (http://www.nhpco.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=5645). As Baby Boomers grow older, there will inevitably be an increased demand for geriatric related services and care due to the great number of Americans transitioning into the senior citizen category. There could not be a more inopportune time to suggest cutbacks in funding. Of course, compromised care is never convenient or desirable but special consideration should be paid to the sheer number of people that will be impacted by the upcoming cuts.

Healthcare Concepts would appreciate your comments on the following:

Along with the rest of the country, members of the home health care and hospice community are asking how healthcare reform will affect them. According to the National Association for Home Care and Hospice’s article entitled “Ensure Adequate and Appropriate Payment for Medicare Home Health Services”, the Tri-Committee’s (three-fold committee composed of representatives in the House with control over health care reform) proposed cuts would, over the course of ten years, cut approximately $57 billion from the Medicare home health program. If the Medicare benefit expends $16.4 billion per year, as the article suggests, once you factor in the $57 billion in reduced funding, Medicare would only be able to cover 65% of projected expenses. As evidenced by the overwhelming response to proposed reform in the form of grassroots movements throughout the nation, voices are being heard and considerations are being made. It is not too late to make your contribution to the effort to oppose the significant cuts in home health care. Contact your representative today!

One of the anticipated fallouts of Obama’s proposed healthcare reform is the cut in Medicare hospice benefits. As with any cutback, the hospice industry can expect a negative impact on the services they provide. Individuals receiving hospice-related services are at the end stage of life and hospice is designed to ease the transition from life to death. Reduced funding threatens to compromise the quality of care received by those already in a fragile state and increases the possibility of discontinuation of care due to reduction in staff and/or closure of the hospice facility. According to the recent press release from the National Hospice and Palliative Care Association (NHPCO) dated June 25, 2009, “3,524 hospice providers from across the country sent a letter to President Barack Obama urging him to stop cuts to the Medicare hospice benefit.” It appears, considering the overwhelming response to the impending legislation, that hospice providers are passionate about their mission to assist terminally-ill individuals while Mr. Obama considers this segment of the population to be expendable. Unfortunately, it seems the President is willing to bail-out a dying industry in the case of American auto manufacturers but is unwilling to bail-out an industry for dying Americans.

I recently read an article about Twitter by Scott Weaver on www.ere.net. He discusses his feelings toward Twitter and its connections with the job recruiting industry. He says, “For those of us with jobs to fill, the gift is the enormous amounts of candidates at our fingertips coming from every media known to man right now.” This statement is pretty truthful, because it seems that social-networking sites do in-fact open up the realm for potential candidates to get their information out there to recruiters. However, his article mostly focuses on the downfalls of “Tweeter-Tatter”. He brings up points such as, is twittering just a waste of time and does it really help you find potential job candidates? We became curious as to how many people actually twitter, and how many have actually found potential job offers from twittering? We would love your feedback!

Yahoo Hotjobs recently had an article discussing the biggest pet peeves for interviewers about job seekers today. I tend to agree the most with Noah Apodaca who said, “My biggest pet peeve is receiving resumes or applications that describe background and work experience wholly unrelated to the position being applied for.” As a recruiter, I come across many people who are very qualified in certain areas, but often times those areas are not the ones employers are searching for. This makes it substantially harder for the recruiter to find a suitable position for the job seeker. Just as Nga Nguyen said in the article, “Job seekers shouldn’t just apply to any job. They need to spend their time effectively finding jobs that are a match for their skills and interest.” Doing the research and making sure that the jobs you are applying for are actually suitable for you, will make your life and the life of the recruiter much easier.
