A couple of weeks ago I wrote an article entitled – Are you out of balance with your spirituality?

In that article, I listed some symptoms of being out of balance with spirituality.

What does it even mean to be out of balance with spirituality?

If you’re out of balance with spirituality, it means that you are giving the spiritual side of existence too much importance in your life. You may spend all your time focusing on activities such as meditation, psychic development, and being immersed in that which is supernatural or otherworldly.

You may be so introverted and lost inside yourself that you find it difficult to relate to the rest of the world (when it’s not about personal or spiritual development). And you may take your spirituality so seriously that you have forgotten to have fun in life too. If you are imbalanced in your spirituality, you will also find that you have neglected other, more earthy areas of your life such as making money and your social life.

If you relate to this description, then I advise that you read that article about spiritual imbalance before you continue reading this article about how to overcome it.

The types of people who are commonly out of balance with spirituality include:

Psychics; healers; other people who work in personal development (with a spiritual slant). It is easy to get out of balance with spirituality when you work in the spirit realm all day.

People who have gone through some sort of trauma in life and who are on a path of healing. These people may be addicted to healing experiences, spiritual growth and the highs that you get from connecting to spirit. These people will be spending so much time detoxing and healing, spiritually and emotionally, that they forget to live too.

People who dislike/hate something about their outside reality, but lack the motivation or courage to change it and find it easier to escape through the spiritual realm.

This article is written for those people who are seriously out of balance with spirituality, like the above groups.

Steps to lose an addiction to spirituality (without losing your spirituality)

If you recognize that you are out of balance, here are some lifestyle changes to help bring more balance back into your life. I’m sure you’ve heard recommendations to ground yourself such as ‘walk on the grass in bare feet’ etc. Those suggestions are good for people with a temporary imbalance but they are not good for people who are totally out of balance – such people will need to take bigger steps to redress the imbalance.

________________________________________________________

Symptom of Imbalance #1: You feel lightheaded and spacey in your body.

Suggestion: Check in with your eating habits.

Your eating habits can either help tether you to the earth plane or they can destabilize and unground you.

Both veganism and raw veganism I find to be ungrounding for me, personally. Often people ask during spirit guide coaching if a raw or high raw vegan diet is right for them at this time and the answer is usually something along the lines of ‘no, not unless you are willing to suffer some imbalance.’ Being on that kind of diet as a psychic or very spiritual person requires a very strong foundation and a good connection to reality. If you don’t have that, it will unbalance you.

I bring this issue up because many people do become drawn to a really pure and light diet when they begin to get interested in spirituality or psychic development. When you open your upper chakras, you might be drawn to giving up meat (the meat-eating students on my spirit guides coaching course often tell me that they notice an aversion to meat as the weeks go by).

Then as people become even more sensitive, they may be drawn to giving up fish. Then some people take it one step further and give up animal products. Some then feel drawn to giving up cooked food and become raw vegans. This is a natural (but rather extreme) progression and one I went through about 18 months ago. First, I was vegetarian, then vegan for a while, then I tried raw veganism for 2-3 weeks, twice. Now I have come full circle and I’m eating meat again. Some people have arguments against eating meat but this is the most grounding diet for me personally.

Other ways to unground yourself with your diet include…

Not eating enough and not eating regularly. Eating three good meals daily and at regular intervals is more grounding than eating small snacks here and there because it sends your energy out of your head and into your digestive system on a regular basis. If you miss meals regularly or if you fast, it isn’t good for the lower chakras – or put in a non-jargon way, it’s bad for you as a human being who is trying to stay tethered to the Earth plane. Regular eating connects us to the earth.

I am not a nutritionist (so the above definitely does not constitute nutritional advice). But it is what I’ve noticed with myself and working with other ungrounded people who are doing psychic development.

________________________________________________________

Symptom of Imbalance #2: You neglect your body habitually and you don’t care about your personal appearance

Another Suggestion: Pay more attention to your body

A great way to take your focus away from your upper chakras and put it on your lower chakras is to treat and pamper your body (on an ongoing basis) and really pay it some attention.

Ways to do this include: spending more time and money on grooming – getting a new haircut, painting your nails; getting a pedicure or manicure; updating your wardrobe (throwing out all your old clothes that you no longer wear and getting some new ones that you love wearing and which make you feel great). Investing money and energy on your appearance and the way you feel in your body (instead of investing it in psychic development, spiritual growth or some such thing) will help to move energy out of your upper chakras. If you’re very out of balance, it might be a good idea to set aside some of your budget each month especially to celebrate and take care of your physicality, beauty and appearance.

I know that this may seem not a very appealing task, especially if it’s the middle of winter and you have no money but those are the times when you really need to go shopping (even if it’s to the thrift/charity shop). I myself have been guilty of wearing jogging bottoms to work and brown and black all the time (especially in the winter and seeing as I work from home). But it’s great for your sacral chakra if you can dress up in something beautiful and colourful more often, and allow yourself to wear nice things even if you’re not leaving the house.

You have probably seen those TV shows where they take a drab, unhappy-looking person and turn them into someone who looks and feels ten times better because of their haircut and the way they dress. That’s the power of spending time and money on your appearance – it gives yourself and others the message ‘I honour, love and celebrate my physical aspect.’ And that’s important if you are out of balance with spirituality.

Another way to honour your physicality is to exercise regularly – walking is OK but something that raises your heart rate on a regular basis is even better. I walk a couple of miles per day but presently I don’t have activities such as cardio which raise my heart rate. I have done in the past, though and I have noticed the difference it makes to feeling physically present.

________________________________________________________

Symptom of Imbalance #3: you don’t want to do anything non-spiritual – it bores you.

Suggestion: Have some non-spiritual activities in your life whether it bores you or not.

This sounds obvious but having a variety of activities in your life (some of which are nothing to do with spirituality) is important. The reason why most people don’t need this article is because most normal people have jobs that keep them grounded. If you work in personal development and spirituality (or if you work alone), you will need some sort of antidote to being in your head and to being alone. That antidote could be a fun hobby that you do regularly that brings you into contact with people you wouldn’t normally meet.

If you are really out of balance, you WILL have lost the taste for non-spiritual activities. The taste for normal human activities is one that you need to recover bit by bit, and it comes back as you put your focus there for a while so don’t worry if you are passionate about nothing but spirituality or your inner world for a while even as you explore other interests. The desire for more normal, human stuff will come back once you focus on it.

Another Suggestion: Make sure you have some non-spiritual people in your life

Make sure that you don’t avoid social contact with people who don’t share your worldview. In my opinion, being able to relate to people from all walks of life (including those who aren’t overtly into personal or spiritual development) is important for balance. I know very spiritual people who don’t like having friends who aren’t spiritual but I think that you don’t need to share your worldview with everyone. Not everyone needs to be acquainted with every single part of you that exists – after all, you are a multi-faceted person and there is more to you than your spirituality.

I agree that if you’re very intimate with someone, you will probably want to share that part of you, but not with everyone who crosses your path. If you do, you can miss out on what you CAN share with other non-spiritual, non personal –development type people.

________________________________________________________

Symptom of Imbalance #4: you spend loads of time working on your beliefs, goals and plans but you rarely create real change in your life or accomplish anything

Suggestion: Get out of your head and just take the next obvious step in front of you.

When you have a lot of energy in your upper chakras, you may need to get something done, but you can be stuck in planning, visualizing, dreaming, theorizing, tying yourself up in knots and going nowhere fast with that. At those times, you will need to turn your brain and mind’s eye off and just ask yourself – what is the next step that I could take now to move towards what I want (even if it is really a baby step). And take it. That takes you straight out of the realm of ideas and into the realm of action.

________________________________________________________

Symptom of Imbalance #5: The world seems like a very harsh and tragic place all the time

Suggestion: Stop taking everything so seriously and go and have some fun (stimulates the sacral chakra)

Spiritual, empathic people can feel people’s plight and are often thinking about how to save the world. From there it’s not an easy transition to having fun and seeing the light side of life, yet you need that too as a human being. Remember that life is not just a school and your purpose isn’t to save the world from itself. Life is also a fun playground, so switch off from your spiritual mission and make sure you do something that really tickles you regularly. This isn’t about going for a walk on your own or something dull like that. I mean real fun. Go and see a stand-up comedy act, see a friend who makes you laugh really hard, go dancing, etc. Connect with the naughty, fun and playful you. Find something that you can do regularly in your week to fill this need for fun and playing.

________________________________________________________

Symptom of Imbalance #6: You are neglecting the practical side of your life

Suggestion: Focus attention on your finances and physical survival (stimulates the root chakra)

Checking your bank balance regularly is good because it connects you to your financial reality. Making a budget is very grounding because it reins your energy in and makes you aware of your present limitations, as unappealing as that will sound to most people.

Cleaning, organizing and tidying is especially good for grounding, as is attending to errands and all those little jobs you have been meaning to do for a while. Preparing food, cooking and baking are all very grounding too. All those aspects of physical life that you would rather run away from are exactly what you need to attend to, in order to stay grounded.

________________________________________________________

FINALLY…

All this talk of cooking, baking and budgeting is all helpful stuff to some degree, but let’s get to the heart of the issue.

If you are out of balance with your spirituality (i.e. addicted to spirituality), you’re running away from something or someone. Imbalanced spirituality is a form of escapism that can become an addiction.

What are you trying to escape from?

It could be a past situation that is too difficult to address and process in a normal, human, emotional way, so you spiritualize it. It could be someone who hurt you. In order to cope with such situations, people can begin to look for an explanation of why such things have happened to them. It’s the spiritual person’s version of finding God after something bad happens. Spirituality is something that should enrich your life, support you and guide you. But it should not be something you depend on like a crutch, an escape mechanism or something that stops you from living life to the fullest. You should not be obsessed with finding out WHY something happened to you or what you are learning from events. Those things can reveal themselves later, in good time.

Here’s a good way of knowing what you could be escaping from:

What is the thing you still cry about for seemingly no reason? (especially when you’re ill, feeling down or PMS-ing)

If you shy away from reality, is it because you have anxiety issues that stop you from having a life?

What is still breaking your heart if you’re honest with yourself?

What do you dislike about your life that you want to change?

At some point, we all have wounds that make us want to stay in bed and hide away from the world. There are very few people who reach a certain age and have no wounds at all. Find out what yours are and address them in a human, emotional way (i.e. get resolution on them that isn’t necessarily spiritual). We can resolve things on the level of spirit, but we must bring the healing down into the emotional and physical plane for anything to change. Sometimes action needs to be taken to put them to bed.

I am right in the middle of facing up to my old wounds which have made me want to escape from life for several years.

If you read my last article, you’ll know that my family emigrated to New Zealand (from the UK) without me when I was 19. I didn’t get residency (to make a long story short) because of an old health problem that delayed my residency application and that delay would have made it too late for the rest of my family to get residency, and so I was left behind and because I didn’t emigrate at that time, it’s made it very difficult to get residency in New Zealand. Getting residency could involve training in a skill shortage area, like being high school teacher, which I am prepared to do, although I’d rather not – last time I heard, being a psychic is not a skill shortage in New Zealand.

I’ve spent several years away from my family and it was something that I didn’t choose or want. I grew up in a family of seven so I was used to having people around me all the time and being away from them for so long made me feel abandoned and angry. As someone who doesn’t like to admit to feeling a whole load of negative emotion or anger, it suited me more to escape from this old wound by ‘rising above it’ and pretending I could distance myself from it. It hasn’t worked and the only thing left to do for me is to face up to all this icky emotion and finally get residency in the same country as my family, no matter what it takes.

As I write this, I am in Brisbane, Australia. I planned to stay here for twelve months but it seems likely that I will return to New Zealand within the next month or two and it’s because of the old emotion that doesn’t leave me alone until I join my family and go home. When I admit this, I don’t need to escape anymore.

What about you? What keeps you from engaging fully with life?

Do you have other suggestions for grounding? If so, please leave a comment.

Can you relate to any of the following?

You don’t like paying attention to real-world matters (like finances) – you’d rather be working on your personal or spiritual development.

You sometimes use your spirituality as a form of escapism. For example, you learn about the law of attraction and feel great about all the possibilities and the potential. But you fail to create anything tangible from it (so you exist perpetually in the realm of ideas rather than action.)

You are not comfortable here on Earth and the world seems very harsh to you.

You prefer to hang around with people who are very spiritual, like you and you avoid having friends who don’t share your world view.

If you could, you’d happily erase from your existence some aspects of physical life – like having to eat, wash and support yourself.

You spend a lot of time thinking about how to create your utopian vision for life here on Earth and you find it difficult accept the state of things here on Earth.

You have a strong tendency to be reclusive and you spend a lot of time in introspection.

You like meditating for hours on end.

You get frustrated at how slow everything moves in the physical plane and the effort it takes to make things happen.

Your sense of purpose and spiritual mission is at the forefront of your life and you think you’re a lightworker.

You are very empathic/intuitive and pick up negative ’stuff’ from other people all the time (one more good reason for being reclusive.)

How did you do? If you could relate to more than six or seven statements (most importantly – the first five), I’d venture to say that you’re out of balance with your spirituality.

If you didn’t relate to many of the first seven statements, then you probably don’t need to read this article.

What does it mean when you’re out of balance with your spirituality?

It means that you live for (and enjoy) spiritual experiences more than you enjoy human experiences. In terms of your auric field, your upper chakras will be very open, with a lot of energy running through them while your lower chakras are neglected and small.

In case you don’t know what I mean by over-developed upper chakras and under-developed lower chakras, here’s a quick guide to the chakra system:

Chakras are energy centres in the human energy body. (The energy body is a reflection of the physical body and our life here on Earth.) Much of the information in your energy body is organized and centred at these chakras, which are located in certain places in your body. Here is some information on each chakra:

Root chakra (red) – governs survival, safety, home, money, family, connection to reality. (Located at the perineum.)

Sacral chakra (orange) – governs sexuality, emotions, sensuality, vitality, creativity. (Located just below the belly button.)

Solar plexus chakra (yellow) – governs personal power, self-control, getting things done. (Located just above the belly button.)

Heart chakra (green) – governs self-love, self-care, self-acceptance, self-worth. (Located over the breastbone.)

Throat chakra (blue) – governs self-expression and communication; speaking and listening. (Located at the throat.)

Third eye chakra (lilac) – Intuition and truth. (Located between the eyebrows.)

Crown chakra (white) – Connection to Spirit and your Higher Self. (Located just above the head.)

Note that those aspects of life which are down-to-earth, human, basic, and grounded are all governed by the lower chakras (the root, sacral, and solar plexus chakras):

Money (root/sacral chakra)

Connection to (sometimes) cold and harsh reality (root chakra)

Sensuality/sexuality (sacral chakra)

Sense of belonging, family and community (root chakra)

Enjoyment, laughter and fun (sacral chakra)

Making things happen in the real world (solar plexus)

Nutrition and physical nourishment (root chakra)

Routines and habits (root chakra)

On the other hand, the upper chakras (crown, third-eye and throat chakras) govern aspects of life such as:

Daydreaming (third eye chakra)

Mental activity and intellectualizing

Visualizing to attract what you want

Connecting with God, Spirit, The angels, spirit guides (crown chakra/third eye)

Psychic experiences such as seeing or hearing things

Giving to, caring for and serving others (heart chakra)

Spiritual teaching (throat chakra)

Writing and speaking (throat chakra)

Introspection, solitude and alone time for processing life lessons

Healing (heart chakra)

– (the heart chakra is the bridge between the upper and lower chakras.)

So when you focus a great deal (for a prolonged period) on the activities which are governed by the upper chakras (like psychic development and introspection), it will shift your focus and energy away from the lower chakras (which govern your connection to reality and the real world) and can result in the symptoms mentioned at the beginning of this article.

What kind of person gets out of balance with their spirituality?

Some people who are very drawn to spirituality can find it difficult to embrace the human experience fully. In fact, some spiritual people don’t like being human and the human condition is frustrating to them.

Being human can feel pretty bad at first to a huge, expansive spirit who is used to whizzing around in the ether. (Maybe that is why babies scream so much when they are born!) It feels very confining being in a physical body. Things don’t happen as quickly as you want – manifesting is slow. You are encumbered by a body which is your vessel for experiencing human life. Plus, your body needs fuel otherwise you can’t function, so you are slowed down by the demands and disabilities of your body from birth. In addition, you are slowed down by that pesky issue of money and physical resources later on.

How We Escape the Feeling of Limitation</span

Sometimes we escape that feeling of confinement (of being in a physical body) through spiritual experiences, such as connecting with our guides, higher self and the angels. Some people escape that confinement through drugs and alcohol. You can escape the confinement periodically through your sleeping hours, because your spirit visits the astral planes. So if you find yourself enjoying your sleep more than you enjoy your waking life, it could be another sign that your spirituality is out of balance. Basically, if you find yourself constantly seeking the high that personal and spiritual development brings, to the exclusion of everything else (i.e. while the rest of your life crumbles around you), then you definitely have an imbalance.

Modern-Day Renunciates

If you were incarnated five hundred years ago and mostly concerned with the activities listed above which stimulate the upper chakras (like connecting with spirit, healing and spiritual service) you would probably have chosen a religious path of service in that lifetime. You’d be a monk or a nun of some description. You’d be able to deliberately forget about the physical aspects of your life – like money and feeding yourself – because your religious order would take care of them for you. In fact, there would be no negative, real-world consequences to neglecting your physical life because the support system would be in place to pick up the slack from you neglecting it.

But the thing is, being out of balance with spirituality is like living as a nun or a monk BUT without the support system of your religious order. It is a path of suffering and imbalance.

I believe that if you identify as a lightworker and feel a strong sense of spiritual mission in this lifetime, you are among those souls who HAVE incarnated countless times in a lifetime of spiritual service – such as a nun, monk, oracle, druid or spiritual teacher (to give a few examples). But times have changed since your last incarnation as a religious servant of God. This time around there are other options.

But old habits die hard and you may still be living like a servant of God, focused on the upper chakras – and ignoring that which is earthy and physical (making money, sex, enjoyment, family and community).

In the end, what we are all working towards is a balance between the spiritual and the physical. We came here to be incarnated and to enjoy the physical plane as fully as we can, while keeping a connection to spirit. Spirituality should not consume your life to the detriment of the human aspects. The keyword is BALANCE. You can have a strong calling for spiritual service and live a full, rich life which honours all of the facets of being human. That means accepting and enjoying all the human, physical functions too.

How I realized that I was out of balance

The first time I had my palm read a few years ago, the reader told me I was ‘barely here’. I didn’t know what he meant. To clarify, he told me that I didn’t like earthly life very much. I was here reluctantly, and wasn’t willing to engage with all aspects of life – only with the aspects I liked – spiritual and psychic stuff.

I began a pattern of retreating from normal life from a very early age. There are times when I have engaged with life a great deal and times when I have retreated and felt unable and unwilling to engage with anything except spirituality.

I would have made a really great nun because I started going to church around the age of ten/eleven on my own – (I felt called to go.) Since the age of 13, I was having (and seeking) spiritual and psychic experiences.

In my late teens, I was able to tap into my spirit (or higher self) to such an extent that I’d feel amazingly expansive, high and able to take on the world. Connecting to spirit brought feelings of bliss, ecstasy and connection with everything. I had the ability to see the beauty and spirit in everything. When I wasn’t happy in my life, I’d escape into this world. It was like putting on a pair of tinted, rose-coloured spectacles.

This was an enchanting but also very isolating path for a teenage girl to take. I didn’t know anyone besides my Grandmother who knew about connecting to spirit and getting high on that (and we’re not talking the liquor kind either!) It felt like no-one really could relate to me.

In addition, at the time, life got a little bit harsher. Some traumatic things happened in my family that I wanted to escape from, and I escaped them by sleeping for up to 16 hours at a time when I could. When I turned 17, I escaped them by running away and travelling and that is a pattern that I am still in, eight/nine years later. When I was 19, my family moved to New Zealand (without me) and I was glad. I was alone and I liked it. I had my spirit guides and my connection to spirit and whatever bad stuff happened to me, I was OK because of that.

But on the negative side, I was SO spiritually focused and needed the spiritual support so much, that I became dizzy, impractical, absent. I was away with the fairies and in another realm, with my upper chakras wide open and my lower chakras (my emotional and human life) completely neglected. I did the bare minimum to keep my human, physical life ticking along.

In addition, when my parents moved away, it removed a solid foundation from my life because I lost my family overnight and I didn’t see them for a long time. That further weakened my connection to the Earth plane, and sense of belonging somewhere. A couple of years later, I became involved in healing and psychic work, worked from home and bam – some time last year I realized I had become a nun, but without the support of a religious order. I must have seemed reclusive, fragile and a bit otherworldly because I was so ungrounded.

Since then I have been working on opening up my lower chakras and agreeing to fully engage with life – all aspects of it. But I had to suffer a lot emotionally before I realized that was necessary. The suffering I went through was perhaps necessary for me to be sufficiently motivated to finally break an old vow of spiritual service to the exclusion of everything else.

Can you relate to this? (I know that most people won’t, but then I know that most normal people don’t read my blog )

At some point in the next couple of weeks, I will publish an article about how to become more grounded and engaging fully with aspects of life even when you like to exist mainly in the spiritual realm – something I have been learning a lot about in the second half of last year (and continue to learn about.)

So you are beginning to work on awakening your psychic abilities. And you’re making progress. Perhaps you are feeling your chakras opening and tingling, maybe you are seeing things in the corner of your eye moving and hearing things.

It’s all quite exciting.

Except it’s happening all the time. You don’t know how to turn it off and it’s overwhelming.

What can you do to shut it down?

If you are feeling you need to tone down your psychic awareness, it’s because you’ve got too much energy running through your third eye and crown chakra. (Check out this article if you’re not too familiar with the chakra system.)

This is because you have opened your third eye and maybe it hasn’t been open for a long time. So it’s running amok a little bit. Here’s what to do in that situation:

1. Get a clear process for shutting down your energy field – and use it

If you want to be able to turn your psychic abilities off at will, you need a clear process for turning them off (AND for turning them on.)

When I tune into people’s spirit guides/energy body, I open up my chakras, and raise my vibration in order to connect. I have a process for doing it (it’s here). I also have a process that I do afterwards (which is the opposite of the opening up process) – to close my chakras and come back into my body. If I don’t do that process, I wouldn’t be closing down my psychic awareness.

My process consists of:

Thanking my client’s guides and my guides for being present

Closing my chakras – all you need to do for this is visualize your chakras closing in your mind’s eye, one by one.

See my energy coming out of the ethers and coming back into my body.

Declare to myself that the reading is over and my psychic senses are now shut down. I am not wearing my psychic hat. I am being a normal human again

I really have to mean the last step. I say that because sometimes I don’t want to close down. Let’s face it – being connected to your guides and receiving information is otherworldly and exciting. It can feel pretty cool. And you can go around on that psychic high for days feeling connected and hooked in. That’s not normal, real life though. So that’s why I say you have to mean the last step. You really have to want to disconnect from your psychic awareness and shut it down for this to work.

If you have an opening up process, you know you can connect again when you want to, so don’t be afraid to close it down.

And remember that your energy is entirely within your control. You control it through your intentions – conscious and subconscious. Turning off psychic abilities after a while becomes like flicking a switch, through intention.

2. Get out of your head and out of your third eye

Secondly, for all the time and attention you’re spending on your psychic and spiritual development, make sure you spend just as much time and attention on your physical human life, for balance.

Your third eye can’t stay open permanently if you are putting your attention elsewhere, on more human, mundane matters. Your energy can’t be all in your third eye and in your head if it’s focused and distributed elsewhere – like in your lower chakras.

Here are some quick fixes to stimulate the lower chakras:

Pay attention to the details of your physical life – if your home is full of clutter or dirty, do some organizing and cleaning. That stimulates your root chakra.

Pay attention to your finances. Pay your bills and check your bank balance. Make a budget if you need to. Don’t let the details of your human life escape you even if they seem really boring.

Do some exercise – even if it’s just a walk.

Get a Massage.

3. Get out of your head (as a way of life)

Being in balance with your psychic abilities is a way of life. It’s not about a quick fix to ground you here and there. If you are someone who is consistently engaging with the psychic and spiritual realms, you must be as dedicated to your physical life too – and pay it just as much attention, if not more.

I know this because I spend a few hours a day in the psychic realm and I know what it is like to be on a high from that. But that high doesn’t last. And life will bring you back down to Earth from it (with a nasty bump) if you don’t counterbalance psychic work with being human and in your body.

Being human involves spending time on your human relationships and getting back into the real world afterwards. That is, unless you want to live as a renunciate or a monk.

I’m pretty sure I did that last time I was here so that life holds no appeal for me.

If all else fails, if you have lots of energy running through your third eye and you can’t switch it off (although realize that ‘can’t’ is a choice, as your energy is completely within your control!), take a bath with a cup of sea salt or Epsom salts in it. That is a good temporary fix to settle your energy.

If you have been following my blog or befriended me on Facebook, you’ll know that I have just moved to a new country (Australia) and a new city (Brisbane). Over the last two weeks I’ve met a lot of new people who have asked me about what I do.

Telling people you’re a professional intuitive is usually something that either kills conversation fairly quickly or sparks off a series of interested questions. Luckily for me most of the people I have spoken to have been interested in my work and open to it.

The most common questions/reactions are:

Do you know everything? Do you already know everything about me just from talking to me?

How many fingers am I holding behind my back? or what did I have for dinner last night?

Some people seem to think that being psychic means being all knowing and omniscient about other people. Actually, this is a common misconception.

Being psychic means you get ONLY the information you NEED from Spirit, as you need it. Information that you need = information that helps you or someone else on their path; information that’s relevant and helpful.

It’s not a party trick.

Some psychics may have experienced something different, but for me there really NEEDS to be a reason for me to get the information I get. When I meet people, I can often tell a lot about who they are and what they’re like. I can sometimes hear thoughts. But I never really get a whole lot of information that I don’t NEED and I definitely don’t get to invade anyone’s privacy or get a peek into something I’m not meant to.

On the other hand, reading for someone is easy because the client gives me permission to read for them and there is certain information that they need to have.

But I can’t tell how many fingers someone is holding behind their back. I can’t usually tell you what you had for dinner. I can’t tell you the lottery numbers if you don’t need to win the lottery right now (and most of us really don’t!)

So, when it comes to psychic information, you get the information you’re meant to get. And what you think you need to know is not necessarily what you need to know.

So, if you want to be psychic, surrender to the Spirit in you. Don’t assume you need to know certain things. Ask Spirit to give you the information that is really HELPFUL and RELEVANT to your life and to the lives of those around you – to help you to live your most joyful and fulfilling life. Or put another way, to help you to live your highest path and purpose.

And don’t ask to be able to read people’s minds or to know the lottery numbers because it’s mostly inappropriate and useless information anyway.

Does being psychic mean you become enlightened and omniscient about your own life?

Another interesting lesson that I have been learning in the last month or so is that being psychic doesn’t mean you can sail through life knowing anything you want to. Sometimes you fall flat on your face.

No psychic is going to be 100% correct all the time, but I do spend my days reading for people and telling them information they tell me is correct, the vast majority of the time. Out of the 400-450 people I’ve read for, I’ve only had a handful tell me they really didn’t resonate with what I told them.

But when it comes to my own stuff and life, I can sometimes have a big blind spot – especially if there is a lesson in it for me.

I went through a lesson in these last two weeks where I formed prejudices about someone I just met and it turned out to be completely and utterly wrong as far as I can see now. Falling flat on your face is very good because it brings you back down to earth. Otherwise you can perhaps think you are right about everything in your own life, and then it’s game over – there’s nothing to learn because you have access to everything. And of course that’s not how it’s meant to be.

In addition, I had a situation this week where I was looking for an apartment with my mother. We arranged to see an apartment and I assumed before I got there that it was going to be unsuitable. Most of my assumptions are intuitive, helpful ones. But when I got there, it turned out to be the apartment I wanted and it ticked all the boxes. I got it wrong for a reason – because there was a lesson in it for me which was: don’t allow all of your initial impressions to close your mind – especially if you have nothing to lose just by checking something out and exploring it.

That is, unless you have a very strong feeling to stay away from something or someone. Those feelings of dread or repulsion in your gut always need to be heeded.

So, if you want to be psychic, surrender to your spirit. You must also be open to getting it wrong and having your view of things expanded – especially when it comes to your own life and ‘stuff’.

Being psychic is NOT about knowing everything or having ‘the Truth’. It’s about getting only the information you personally need, when you need it.

I sometimes hear from people who believe that either you naturally have psychic ability or you don’t. And if you don’t have it, you struggle to develop it.

This is a common belief about psychic ability and although I can understand why people think this, I believe that it’s totally untrue.

Yes – there are some people who are born with a high degree of psychic ability that they retain throughout life

BUT there are also people who are born with a little bit of obvious psychic ability that they later develop to something impressive

AND there are people who seem to have no psychic ability and then develop some.

I’ve seen all three scenarios.

So basically, as with most things, everyone’s experiences of this vary.

But before I go debating whether anyone can be psychic, it would probably help to define what ‘psychic’ actually means.

What does it mean to be psychic?

Being psychic is the ability to obtain information from spirit (from someone’s energy body, your higher self or spirit guides).

There are several ways in which to be psychic –

You can be clairvoyant (and ‘see’ things)

You can be clairaudient (and hear things)

You can be clairsentient (you get lots of hunches and gut feelings.)

You can be claircognizant (you just get information popping into your head.)

You can be an empath (and have the ability to place yourself into the experience of another person and feel their emotions and desires.)

You can get information from dreams.

There are many more gifts than the ones I mention here – it’s not an exhaustive list. (If you have a specific gift that isn’t mentioned here, maybe leave a comment and tell us about it.)

Some of these gifts seem more obviously ‘psychic’ than others – I’m thinking of clairvoyance and clairaudience in particular. And some are thought of as more ‘intuitive’ – like hunches and gut feelings. But it’s all information from spirit, coming to you in some form. And that’s what we call being psychic.

The above gifts will fall into one of three categories for you.

The first category = gifts you naturally have.

For example, my natural gifts are claircognizance and empathy. I can put myself into someone else’s experience without even trying (empathy) and know exactly what it feels like to be them. And during readings I get information about people popping into my brain as if it’s from nowhere. I also know a lot about the people around me without them needing to tell me.

The second category = gifts you don’t naturally have but can develop. For me, those gifts have been clairvoyance and clairaudience. Although I can use them easily during readings, it does feel a little different from using my natural gifts – a bit like driving a manual car when I’m used to automatic. I have to think about what I’m doing – it’s more conscious.

The third category = gifts you’ll never develop. I have heard that empathy as a psychic gift is the only gift it’s impossible to develop if you don’t have it naturally. It’s Rose Rosetree, the empathy empowerment guru, who says this. In my experience doing spirit guides coaching, it’s true. Some students were able to tune into others empathically and others just couldn’t do it no matter how hard they tried.

Why I think anyone can be psychic

I have learned that anyone can be psychic from my own experiences and my experiences teaching (or rather, helping others rediscover) their psychic ability. I’ll talk more about those experiences in a moment.

In terms of theory, the reason why everyone can be psychic is because everyone has a soul. We are spiritual beings in a human experience. (Your soul is also sometimes called your higher self or your spirit.)

You are wired to keep in contact with your higher self (and spirit guides) while you’re in your physical experience that you call life. If you don’t stay in contact with your higher self, you can get very off-track in your life and go down roads that bring you no joy. So, your Higher Self will impulse and communicate with you in various ways about what to do and where to go.

So, for me, saying that not everyone can be psychic is a bit like saying that not everyone has a soul! Obviously we all have souls and we can all have that connection to spirit.

My Own Experiences

I grew up knowing that I was very sensitive and empathic, but I couldn’t always use my abilities on demand to know stuff. Yes, they were there to some degree but I was nowhere near as psychic as I am now. I also went for long periods without seeing much sign of them at all, earlier on in life. I later developed my abilities to a higher level through practice.

I have also read for and coached dozens of people who thought that they were not particularly psychic – and then realized they did have the ability. They managed to awaken their most natural gifts and even try out using some that weren’t natural to them.

This was particularly noticeable on my spirit guides coaching program. Towards the end, I got some of the students on the course to read for one another. And they all surprised themselves with what they were able to do. And most of these people didn’t think of themselves as especially gifted.

There are certainly some factors that contribute towards the level of psychic ability you can reach. Here are some of them (along with some that really don’t!):

Motivation

I would say that the most important factor that contributes towards the level of ability you develop is motivation and life purpose. A good level of psychic ability is available to everyone, but how many people with dormant abilities are actually motivated to do the work and find out how to get there? Those who are feeling motivated to develop their psychic abilities often feel it’s part of their life purpose and are driven – they can’t not do it.

Gender

Another factor that people sometimes ask about is gender – are women more likely to develop psychic ability than men? I have gotten more women taking my spirit guides coaching than men. I am not sure why that is. But I’d say that the only (conditioned) difference between men and woman is that women are sometimes more in touch with their emotions, so they can sometimes be more open to spirit in that regard. But of course, that’s not true for everyone – it is just a conditioned tendency resulting from our culture.

Your Beliefs

Other factors that do make a difference are your beliefs and how open-minded you are. Remember that the Law of Attraction underlies everything so if you don’t make room in your belief system for psychic experiences, you won’t see them. I explained this in more detail in my article When you have trouble believing in psychic abilities. Someone who believes is much more likely to develop a high level of ability than someone who doubts a great deal.

Ability to Quieten the Mind

Another factor is how good you are at being still in your mind. But some people, myself included, have a lot of nervous energy and find it hard to create that space of stillness and quiet in the mind. But meditation actually really helps with this and you can learn to create stillness in your life for psychic insights. However, those who are naturally good at this have a higher chance of getting insights spontaneously, because intuitive information comes through gaps in your thoughts.

Finally, people sometimes ask if aspects of your astrological chart make it easier for you to develop a high level of psychic ability. I am not an astrologer but have heard that certain aspects to Neptune in the chart are an indication of ease for developing psychic ability. Some people say that if you have a lot of water in your chart (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) it demonstrates a good connection to your emotions and perhaps to your higher self. As I said, I am not an astrologer but if you know a lot about psychic ability showing up in the natal chart, please give us your take on this.

So, there you have it. That’s my take on developing psychic ability. I believe that in general it’s a fundamental human skill – not so much a gift.

On Saturday 21st November, I’ll be moving to Brisbane, Australia for one year.

In the last eight months I’ve been in New Zealand. Here’s a peek into the place and world that has been my home for the past nine months and here are some things I’ll miss…

#1: Mama

My mum got a phone call from me in February and I said something like ‘Mum, is it OK if I stay with you for a few weeks?!’ I was in NSW, Australia at that time. Fast forward eight months later and I’m still at my mum’s place!

I have been so lucky to spend nine months here in this beautiful part of New Zealand, and it has been so nice to catch up with my mum after living 12,000 miles away for a number of years. I’ll really miss her and our lunches together and the fact that she looks after me so well even though I am 25 not 7.

#2: The Vines

I am in the Marlborough region of New Zealand, which is a famous wine-growing region so vines are literally everywhere and part of the landscape. If you have bought wine from New Zealand, chances are it might be made here. If you’re a wine drinker, next time you’re in the Supermarket, look out in the NZ section for Cloudy Bay or Stoneleigh. They make that literally next to us. It’s good stuff. I love how the vines change through the seasons. In Autumn the leaves go brown, in winter they are bare and in spring they are covered in tiny green shoots.

Here are some photos of this region taken by Trevor, mum’s husband, who is a gifted photographer, photoshopper and graphic designer. He took most of these photos. He also has a website and a Flickr account with lots more New Zealand photos.

Evening (about 6.30pm) is my favourite time of day.

#3: Ruben and Billy

Ruben and Billy are mum’s cats. I love cats because they’re independent and they basically do what they want. Ruben is the gentlest creature I’ve ever known. I love the expression on his face in this photo. The second one is of me and Billy who is greedy and very affectionate.

#4:Wineries and Good Food

I’m a bit of a foodie. I love eating out and I love cooking so I have been in my element. Because there are so many vineyards here, there are also wineries with restaurants.

Our favourite is the famous Allan Scott winery:

I don’t eat meat but I eat fish. It’s actually quite hard eating out and not eating meat, as they do love their meat here in New Zealand. Here is me having two desserts which I do sometimes just because I can!

I am fairly skilled at moving to new places, so I have the drill down pat by now. But all the same, please send me some good moving vibes.

I will be staying with Brisbane blogger and alternative health goddess Fran (her website is www.HighonHealth.org) for the first few days. She has kindly offered to put me up.

In getting ready to move, I’ve noticed two attitudes I can take.

The first attitude is the attitude that moving is a damage limitation exercise. I must be stable. I must have enough money. I must find the place that I want to live in. I must meet people I like. I must not be unhappy. I must not miss my family.

The second attitude is one that life owes me nothing. I welcome everything and anything that comes my way. I am open to everything and I close my heart to nothing. I trust life to send me the very best that it has to offer. Whether that looks like failure, disasters or even…COCKROACHES.

Or maybe it looks like happiness, dependent on…nothing. Just like so many times before.

And the place I am going to live in is this:

I know I might be limiting myself a little by being so specific

So I guess instead I will just set the intention to find a…

2 bedroom house or flat

Semi-furnished

Allows cats

Art-deco or with character

Living ALONE

A good kitchen with an oven

I am putting the details here so that when it’s manifested I can show you.

PS – If you’re in Brisbane and a blogger/psychic in this line of work, drop me a line. I’d love to meet like-minded people in this part of the world.

A final PS – If you wanted to do the spirit guides coaching program, there is still one place left for December. You can apply on that page. If you want to do the coaching program but can’t afford coaching right now, stay tuned for my announcement in the next week or so regarding a new product for psychic awakening, which is the next best thing to working with me personally to learn to communicate with your spirit guides. I have been working on this for the last couple of months or so which is why I have been blogging less often!

Do you use the Law of Attraction in your finances?

If you’re anything like what I think is the average reader of this blog, you know all about the law of attraction but you’re probably not using it consistently in your finances, and probably not asking for a monthly figure that you want to earn (in dollars, pounds, or euros or whichever currency you earn your money in).

If you’re not using the law of attraction in your finances, could it be…

a. because you feel you don’t have much control over your finances (maybe you’re working in a J-O-B)

b. You don’t need to (in which case you don’t need to read this article!)

c. You forgot to! (you’re probably a very busy person.)

Well, if you do want to use the law of attraction in your finances more effectively, I have a simple little process to give you. You can use this process to set your monthly money intentions and call on Spirit to help you reach your target. For this, you will need some level of intuition. So if you’re working on your intuitive development, this is a good process to use to develop your intuition as well.

I have to say, this process works really well for self-employed people because they have more control over their time and the amount that they can earn. So, if you’re intuitive AND self-employed, I think you’ll find it useful.

Me and My Money Intentions

Before I give you this process, I want to tell you a bit about what I learned when I tried manifesting money a few years ago. When I first saw the film the Secret a few years ago, I heard one of the teachers in that film talk about manifesting money and cheques coming to them in the mail. I thought this seemed like a pretty unlikely thing to happen to me, but I tried it anyway. I willed money to come to me in general. I told the Universe I wanted to earn £2,000 per month. I didn’t get any cheques in the mail and my income didn’t go up.

There were two reasons for this:

Firstly, I was not a vibrational match for earning £2,000 per month. That means that I had not yet developed the resources in myself – motivation or personal qualities – of someone who could earn that amount of money. I had no passive income streams, no sense of purpose and I had no idea how I would earn more money. I was also very worried about my financial situation as I was living beyond my means and so my general sense of panic relating to money didn’t help either.

Secondly, I was not taking any strategic action – that is, actions designed to increase my income. At that time, I had a job and I was earning about 1000 euros per month. So I just passively willed more money to come to me and hoped it would.

So, even though I said to myself ‘I’m going to earn £2,000 this month’, I didn’t achieve my goal because I hadn’t laid the foundations for achieving it and I had no method for getting there.

These days, most months I do remember to set an intention of how much money I want to earn in my business and most months I do reach my goal – and then some!

The reason for this is that I don’t just set an intention and hope for money to arrive in the mail. There is more to my process than that, now.

So, here is the process for setting a money intention:

Step one:

Ask yourself, what do you want to earn next month? Find a dollar figure (or a figure in whatever currency you’re working in.) Then ask yourself, ‘am I very far from being a vibrational match for earning this figure?’ Go within and consult with your gut.

You are aiming for a figure that you’re nearly a vibrational match for – say, 75% or 60% a match for. You don’t want a figure that you’re already earning and 100% a vibrational match for. You don’t want something that feels completely out of your league either. You want something that’s still a challenge though.

If you’re nearly a vibrational match you might feel excited but it’ll feel within your financial frame of reference; within your ‘league’ right now. It may feel uncomfortable to a degree but not completely uncomfortable. On the other hand, if you’re totally not a vibrational match, you may feel totally uncomfortable and as if it’s just not within your financial frame of reference to earn that figure you chose. You probably can’t imagine earning it.

(By the way, if you have a pendulum, you can dowse on how aligned you are (in a percentage) with earning your chosen amount in the next month.)

If you can see that the amount you chose is TOTALLY outside of your financial frame of reference (i.e. too high) then try again with another figure that’s lower than the one you chose before. So if your ideal amount to earn was $5,000 per month, try $3,500/month the second time – go through the same process and ask yourself the same questions.

Step two:

Ask yourself (or your guides):

What do I need to do to become a vibrational match for earning this figure?

Do I need to make any changes?

Are there any changes in attitude that I need to make?

What holds me back?

See if any situations, thoughts or information pops into your mind. Sometimes the answer comes pretty quickly – or you at least get a clue or a sense of what the changes are you need to make. You could use automatic writing to get your answers if you prefer that method. Just put some time aside and ask Spirit for guidance. You may be surprised at what pops into your mind from nowhere.

Depending on the figure you chose, the things that come to mind might be pretty big changes, like work part-time and start your business. Or they could be smaller changes. Ask for guidance about strategic actions you can take to earn that amount and opportunities to become a better vibrational match for the amount you chose. If I had done this three years ago, I might have noticed that my tendency to panic in an irrational way about money wasn’t helping. I might also have noticed that I had no budget and was not tracking what I was spending or earning. I would also have noticed that I hated my job and needed to shift to something different.

If you don’t get any information at all on this, just release your intention to earn your desired amount and ask your guides to show you what you need to do (during the course of this month) to become a vibrational match for earning the amount you chose. This may turn out to be a journey, depending on how big your goal is. You may induce some shifts in attitude or life path if you put out this intention.

So, you can see how this process is more thorough and effective than just taking an arbitrary dollar figure you might or might not be a match for earning and hoping that figure will come to you passively. This is a process that takes into account the fact that we need to take actions for our dreams to come true and also, we need to grow into a person who can have or do what we want. It also takes into account the fact that we don’t have all the answers straight away – sometimes we just need to put out the intention, have faith and then wait for guidance that can take us there over the course of a month or longer.

I have done this process this month for my business. My goal is to expand my business, provide more value (and deliver it) and earn £4,000 per month. I was given eight actions to take to reach my goal, a few of them I predicted I wouldn’t be able to complete until the end of the year, so I knew my goal of earning the amount I set for myself probably won’t happen until then, unless other things change for me in the mean time.

Try this process and tell me in the comments whether you got any next steps or guidance. Or leave a comment if you have any questions.

PS. I opened the Spirit Guides coaching program again – there are currently four out of the twelve places remaining, so if you wanted to do this program in December, you will want to apply fairly soon!

This article is a more general one about how you can unravel your dreams. This week I’ll publish a second article on dreams about death and precognitive (future) dreams.

Before I launch into this topic of interpreting dreams, remember that not all dreams are created equal. Some dreams are meant to be unravelled and interpreted and some are not. So, first I’ll talk about the different dreams you can have and which ones are worth interpreting.

Why We Dream

When we dream, we visit the astral planes around this planet. There are said to be seven positive and seven negative astral planes. We are supposed to visit the positive astral planes when we’re asleep for a number of reasons, here are some of them:

Reason #1 : To stay connected to Spirit

The astral plane is not in the ether (i.e. the ‘other side’) but it’s not in this plane either. In a way, it’s like a half-way house between the spiritual and the physical. When you leave your body at night and visit the astrals, you experience what it is like to be alive but not in a body (a bit like how it is after death!)

Because the astral plane is like a half-way house between heaven (the ether) and Earth, dreams are an important part of our spiritual life – something that keeps us connected to spirit.

Therefore dreaming is an easy way for spirit to get a message to you.

If it’s really important that you receive a message from spirit about something, you’ll get a really clear and obvious one in your dreams – it won’t be cryptic. The message could come through an experience or understanding that you integrate while you’re in the astral plane or it could be a message that comes through words or even song lyrics.

Reason #2: To Expand your perspective, change your vibration and get a change of scenery, energetically

As I mentioned, there are seven positive astral planes. There are many astral ‘places’ that you can travel to and learn in.
I personally feel like I travel in my dreams because when I wake up, I can feel completely different, like I’ve come back from a long trip away.

You ARE travelling while asleep, but just in the non-physical. And those dreams can renew you and transform the landscape of your reality, making you feel different when you wake up.

Reason #3: To Serve Others

I’ve mentioned the concept of ‘dream masters’ once before in an article I wrote – Why People Dream. Dream masters are souls who participate in the learning experiences of others in the astrals. If you have lots of dreams with souls in it whom you don’t recognize, they are probably dream masters who have shown up to play a role in your dream so that you can take or learn something from the dream experience. Maybe you’ve had one of those learning experiences in a dream where something ‘clicked’ for you when you wake up and you just ‘get it’.

If you are one of these dream master souls who participates in the learning experiences of others (about 25-30% of my Akashic Record reading clients are) then you will have many dreams that are not meant for you to learn from. In fact, you may not remember them for that reason. But when you do remember your dreams they may seem to make no sense to you or they may seem irrelevant to you.

How to Interpret Dreams

I’ve learned from doing spirit guide coaching that dreams are usually meant to be interpreted even if they seem cryptic sometimes. As I mentioned before, the more urgent the message, the clearer the symbolism will be. But some of the messages do become clearer if you do some unravelling.

A dream is basically your subconscious (or spirit) painting a picture, made of many brush strokes. What will it paint and add in, and why? Everything in the dream landscape is there for a reason – including what happened, the backdrop, the people in it and the symbols. (But really, if nothing in it has any meaning for you, don’t bother assigning any – it was probably not a dream that was meant for you.)

When you have a dream that you want to interpret, in your journalling or exploring, you can examine:

What Happened?

This is the most obvious part of the interpretation.

What actually happened? Look for another layer of symbolism in the dream. For example, there are many connotations and layers of meaning to the verb ‘fall’. If you fall in a dream, what are you falling for? Or whom? Is it a case of pride comes before a fall? Look at each verb that you write out as an action in the dream.

Also, watch out for your own ‘inner language’ of symbolism…

If you and I both look at a picture or a tarot card, without knowing what the meaning of the card is, we will both hone in on and draw different things from the imagery of the card or picture, depending on our past experiences. There is no universal language of symbolism that applies to everyone.

Different symbols mean different things to different people.

To me, whales are sacred, as are dolphins. Cockroaches to me symbolize fear and inspire disgust. Doing exams means not having enough time for something or feeling under pressure. The ocean means the vast unknown that I haven’t explored. I’ve come to notice that having my teeth fall out is usually an anxiety dream. Depending on your personal experiences, all of these symbols may mean something entirely different to you so there probably isn’t that much point looking them up in a dream dictionary, especially not the old-fashioned dream dictionaries that think everything comes down to death, ruin or sex.

Settings and Backdrops

Certain settings can crop up in dreams over and over and each backdrop is significant. It adds a whole different overtone to the dream if it’s set in the road where you grew up or somewhere in the past, doesn’t it? Sometimes dreams will be set in a completely unknown setting which lends an air of possibility or something futuristic to them. Some dreams feel like they already took place in the past.

Look also at the feeling and mood of the dream, as this is significant. My dreams are rich in strong emotions. Sometimes the mood can be very subtle and sort of in the background.

Sounds

The funniest thing about my dreams is that when I get a clear message, Spirit will hammer it home even further by adding the perfect song which further reinforces the message. It’s actually funny how creative I am (or how creative spirit is) with the songs. When I listen to music, for some reason I pay a lot of attention to lyrics and always remember lyrics of songs (more than the tune) so this is probably why I get lyrics in my dream which apply perfectly to the message I am already getting in the dream.

An Interesting Exercise for Inducing Dreams

Several weeks ago, when I was doing the Spirit Guides Coaching, the spirit guides gave the following exercise to one of the participants. It’s so simple I don’t know why I hadn’t thought of it before.

Write a question on a post it note and leave it next to your bed.

Ask your spirit guides to send you a dream that answers the question just before you wake up.

When you wake, make sure you explore the metaphors and messages within the dream by journaling about it soon after – this is one half of the process.

This is an interesting exercise to do because you often get a dream in response to it. So, you can interpret your dream in the light of what you asked, which makes it easier to interpret and narrows down the area of life that it can relate to.

I tried this out several weeks ago and asked ‘Where am I going in my career, long-term?’ It was not a question I particularly needed the answer to at that time, but I was obviously feeling some sort of uncertainty that day to have asked it.

The dream I had just before waking was definitely relating to career, but not exactly answering my question.

Here’s what happened:

In the dream, I was standing outside the Akashic Record with a girl I had never met before. The Akashic Record looked a bit like this in my dream. (Everything in it was made of marble.)

This girl was my student and I was supposed to show her around the Akashic Record. It looked like an old museum in the Akashic Record and we kept going up to ledges that were high up. Whenever I got close to a ledge, I got dizzy but instead of me falling, when I got dizzy, my student would teeter on the edge of it and nearly fall. In the end, she did fall a long way onto the marble below and I was certain she was dead but when I got down there, she was actually alive and fine. I then went to have dinner with her and her family but I couldn’t look them in the eye because I let their daughter fall in the Akashic Record and I felt guilty.

This dream was clearly not a relevant response to ‘Where am I going, long-term, in my career?’ but it addressed the question of ‘What is holding me back in my career right now?’

I got this dream just as I started doing my Spirit Guides Coaching Program, with nine students. I discussed this dream with one of my blogger friends and I realized that I was thrilled AND freaked out at the same time at all this responsibility of teaching in this area for the first time.

I also know I have a tendency to take on responsibility for other people’s experiences which is a big life lesson for me and also probably the biggest thing that holds me back in the area of career. So, remember that in response to asking a question, you may get an answer to another, perhaps more pressing question in your life, instead.

The next blog post will talk about dreaming of death and dreaming about the future.

What have you been dreaming lately?

If you don’t usually dream, try out the exercise above and see what happens.

http://healingandinsight.com/wp-admin/post.php?action=edit&post=1460&message=1

Lately quite a few people have written to me wanting to know how to become a psychic or intuitive.

I have some general advice to give you around this topic and then I will talk more about the training I did to become a professional psychic.

If you want to become a professional intuitive, you’re probably in one of two situations.

You already know you’re very intuitive, tapped into your spirit guides/higher self and maybe you’re already channeling messages for others.

You haven’t had much experience reading for others. But you know you really want to go into an area like psychic work/healing. You feel a strong pull towards helping others but you’re not sure how to do that yet. You want something or someone that can teach you that.

If you’re in the first situation (you already have some experience) and if you’re rather intrepid, you could become a professional intuitive by learning on the job. If you’re getting some information that helps people already, then you can hone your skills by just doing it. Offer readings for free – when you’ve done ten free 30 minute readings you will be in a completely different place than you were before you did the readings. You will have learned quite a lot.

Keep doing it and then when you start feeling more confident, offer readings for a low price and go from there.

You may find that it’s rather ‘hit-and-miss’ at first, which is why you offer the readings for free. But honestly, the more readings you do, the better you get at it. My guides tell me that if you never get any wrong information, you don’t develop that inner knowing – that feeling you get when you have an insight that’s spot on. So find some non-judgmental people to practice on and remember that at some point you will probably have some insights that are not so spot-on but that’s OK as long as people know you’re practicing.

If you’re in the first situation, then you may also find the following articles of mine helpful:

How I Tune into Your Spirit Guides – (The process I use in readings for tuning into Spirit Guides.)

What is the Energy Body and How to Read it – (My process for tuning into the energy body plus some recommended books for learning about the chakra system.)

So, now I’ve discussed how to go about giving readings if you’re in the first situation. On the other hand, if you’re in the second boat (you want to become an intuitive but you have little experience or knowledge of this profession), then you will probably need to get some sort of training.

How to Get Trained

I am sure there are plenty of psychics out there who offer to train others. To be honest, I’m not familiar with many of them personally. I have heard that my friend and colleague, intuitive Slade Roberson will be releasing an intuitive training program soon and I highly recommend Slade both as an intuitive and a teacher (I took a class with him about 18 months ago and I know that everything he produces is of a really high quality.) His course isn’t out yet, I believe, but watch out for it on his site soon if you’re interested in learning from him (he also has other courses on his site for intuitive development.)

So, the program I am recommending personally is the one that I took to become a professional intuitive (and one I know inside out) – Soul Realignment™.

So, what follows is a detailed description of what Soul Realignment teaches you – why I loved it and a couple of drawbacks in there too (because no course, even if it’s pretty darn good, is going to be 100% perfect for everyone.) That way, if you’re thinking about becoming a professional intuitive or healer, you can read all about Soul Realignment and get a pretty good sense of whether or not it could be the course you’ve been looking for.

What is Soul Realignment™?

Soul Realignment is a home-study course for becoming a professional intuitive. You get 14 hours of audio lectures, a manual and two hours of one-on-one tuition at key points during the course. You also get ongoing email support from Andrea Hess, the teacher of Soul Realignment, for any questions you have. During the course you choose five practice clients and do a reading for them. It costs $947 (US dollars) for the entire level one course (or $997 in three monthly installments), so it’s not a cheap option for becoming a professional intuitive. Because of that, it does tend to attract people who are really serious about intuitive work as a career, because it is an investment.

What exactly does Soul Realignment teach you to do?

Soul Realignment teaches you to read the Akashic Record.

Most psychics, when they read for people, do not read the Akashic Record. Most professional psychics tune into your spirit guides and channel messages that way. Some are adept at tapping into the angelic realm too.

So, what is special about reading the Akashic Record?

By reading someone’s Akashic Record, you can find out who they are on the level of their soul. You can find out what soul group they belong to, what their soul trainings and soul gifts are. You can look up various aspects of the Akashic Record, put all of these together and paint a picture for the client of their life purpose and soul gifts. I actually find all of this information invaluable for career readings, because it’s precise and extremely detailed and always resonates a great deal with my clients.

In addition, by reading the Akashic Record, you can find out what the life lessons are behind your experiences and the experiences of your clients. Understanding WHY something is happening in your life can really help you to resolve or accept it.

And thirdly, Soul Realignment teaches you a complete process for finding out what ‘blocks’ or negative energy clients have in their energy body (which have them attracting things they don’t want) and where they come from. This program also teaches you to clear blocks and negative energy from the energy body. So, it’s not just a course in reading for people, it’s also a spiritual healing course.

How I discovered Soul Realignment

I found this Soul Realignment course in the summer of 2007. I had just had a reading with Andrea Hess (the founder of Soul Realignment) and I was beginning to get psychic messages that were meant to be passed on to other people. I had been told earlier on in the year (by psychic-medium Erin Pavlina) that I’d be doing readings for people in the future. I was fed up of my teaching job (the 9-5 workday is definitely not for me!) and inside me there was something stirring – a desire for spiritual understanding and a desire to help others on a deeper level.

Andrea brought out her new course just before I had my reading, which was when I discovered more about my soul gifts and what was driving me on a soul-level. The course jumped out at me as being a good fit for my soul gifts, and I just knew I had to do it.

So, I ordered the course. It was sold as an intuitive development course and to be honest I hadn’t read the product description that well. In my haste and excitement, I just assumed that the course would teach me how to channel spirit guides. I was totally wrong. But I’m actually glad I was totally wrong because the course was so much more than a course for channelling.

How Soul Realignment Teaches You to Retrieve Information

When I received the course in the mail, I was surprised to find that there was a lot of dowsing involved. Dowsing is where you use a pendulum to receive information. You swing the pendulum and get a yes or no answer through the pendulum and the way it swings. Soul Realignment also comes with a load of charts. So, for example, if you wanted to find out which soul group someone belongs to (this is an essential part of someone’s life purpose), you look at the chart which has about 25 different soul groups in rows and columns and you ask your pendulum ‘is this person’s soul group in row one, in column two, etc.’ Until you locate their soul group.

Before you can start dowsing, obviously you need to learn about all the different things that are found in the Akashic record, including the different parts which make up a person’s purpose. Such as the soul groups (you find out about all of these, along with the different soul trainings you can have.)

You are also trained in using a pendulum correctly. Plus, not forgetting HOW to actually access the Akashic record – you get an attunement to the Akashic record and you learn a process for putting yourself into an altered state of consciousness for receiving information from the Akashic Record. So you don’t just jump into it straight away – you get eased into it.

Clearing Negativity

The most fascinating part of my studies in Soul Realignment was learning all about the different types of negativity that can affect us in the energy body and manifest into our lives.

I learned about ‘programs’ that can run at our chakras like viruses and which hold us back and restrict us. I learned about negative thoughts forms, cords and negative compassionate connections between people (and many more things besides). I learned about things that come from past lives and things that come from this present lifetime. Basically, I learned a thorough frame of reference for the “stuff” that shows up in our lives and affects us negatively. That frame of reference has been invaluable because you can tell clients exactly why they’ve been attracting what they have. Not to mention being able to clear that negativity with clients so that they can manifest something different. That is something else that you are taught how to do, which helps clients to transform their life.

Soul Realignment also teaches you how to find out the exact nature of the negative energy that is in the client’s energy field – for example, trauma, self-denial, fear of victimization or self-judgment, so this is a level of precision that can sometimes be missing from a regular psychic reading.

Intuitive Development for Left-Brained People

At first, when I got Soul Realignment in the mail and I realized how much dowsing was involved, I have to admit I felt a bit disappointed by that. I felt like it was TOO structured and like there was not enough magic to it. I also thought it might be like an intuitive development course for idiots because at the time, I thought ‘Hey, anyone can dowse and find out this stuff!’ It was probably a bit of ego because I wanted to show off my intuitive skills which I thought were developing!

It was only when I did my first few readings that I realized just how much the structured nature of the course – and the dowsing – was really serving me. I also saw how it was totally NOT a course for idiots because you need brains to do it and to sort through the information; put it together and present it to the client – that’s a skill you develop on the course.

The dowsing also served me because it brings accuracy and precision. It is kind of cool doing your very first reading and getting it completely spot on. You probably wouldn’t get that to the same degree if it was a purely channelled reading, as they can be more ‘hit-and-miss’, especially at first.

My very first paid reading was with a client named Tracey who gave me a testimonial – which meant that she loved the reading even though it was one of my first. I cannot tell you how much it boosted my confidence to have that experience of being accurate right from the beginning. I would say it was definitely due, at least in part, to the dowsing element which gives precision to everything.

So, even from the start you can give a pretty accurate reading even without having amazingly well developed psychic/intuitive skills.

And as you do more and more readings, you begin to get other information too. For example, you begin to get extra information about someone’s life purpose or career, or intuitive information on the details of someone’s past lives. In addition, the attunement to the Akashic Record sort of catapults you into another realm of sensitivity – or at least that was my experience. I had my first mediumistic experience, speaking with a deceased spirit, around the time of my attunement to the Akashic Record (and THAT had never happened to me before!)

So, Soul Realignment is like a foundation AND a ’spring board’ (so to speak) for becoming an intuitive. It provides you with a solid foundation for reading for people that you can either use on its own to give really accurate readings OR you can expand on it like I have and begin to do more general intuitive readings as well.

So is Soul Realignment just a course in dowsing and reading the Akashic Record? What about channelling information from Spirit Guides?

One thing I would say is missing from Soul Realignment to some degree is the ‘how-to’ of speaking to spirit guides. You don’t learn specific techniques for developing your clairvoyance or clairaudience (at least not directly), but then again, this course never promises to teach you that. And your clairvoyance/audience, etc tends to be something that develops naturally and indirectly, along the way when you begin the Soul Realignment journey, in my experience. The course does teach you how to make a profile of a client’s spirit guide team – including what the spirit guides look like, their names and what they help the client with. So doing those gives you an opportunity to practice and to build your psychic abilities further.

In addition, I forgot to mention that the level one course teaches you to energetically cleanse properties, land and objects.

Building a Business as a Professional Intuitive

As I mentioned, because this is a high-priced course, it tends to attract serious people who are looking to build a business using their intuitive skills. I have quite a few previous clients and friends who have quit or were made redundant from their full-time jobs and are in the process of building a profitable business using the techniques of Soul Realignment in their readings.

I mention the business aspect here because some people who are looking at this course will be thinking about this. After all, $947 is not cheap (at least for most people) and you have to think about your return on investment. Some people have asked me how much I earn doing my readings that are based on Soul Realignment. I charge 175 GBP (about $295) for one Akashic record reading – which I call the ‘past-life and purpose reading’ (and I charge about $250/hour for the more general intuitive readings). I do about 5 readings per week if I’m not busy with spirit guide coaching or another project. If I’m busy with something else, I’ll do a few or a couple a week. So, intuitive readings make up a good proportion of my income and for the last 18 months that has made up at least 80% of my overall monthly income.

Most new practitioners charge around $150 for a one hour reading. Even if you do a few of those a week, depending on where you live, you have a fairly OK income. It’s actually quite cool because you only work for an hour or two a day and you make about $75-$100/hour. So, it’s the perfect work for a parent who wants to be at home with their kids during the day. But of course, when you’re building your business in the first year, there is a lot of work that you need to do on marketing in order to get clients, so in the first year you’re not making as much money per hour.

Business Support

The other added bonus of doing Soul Realignment is the level of support you get on the business side of things. It’s more like a membership site that you have lifetime access to, than a product you buy once and that’s it. That’s because Andrea does monthly calls on the topic of intuitive work or building a business as an intuitive. She also does support calls for practitioners where you can ask your questions and she will answer them live.

She has a recommended resources page, she offers a website building option for new practitioners and there is the discussion board where you can network and get help from other practitioners.

Working with Andrea

Andrea is the founder of Soul Realignment and the one who does the tuition. She truly has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the topic of intuitive development (she’s written a book and has her own products on this topic) so she knows her stuff. And she has also taught me a great deal about building a business as an intuitive too. The thing I like about Andrea is that although she provides a good level of support, she has a high level of trust in her students and she doesn’t ‘spoon feed’ them or allow them to get dependent on her like a ‘guru’ figure – she keeps it real and empowers them to be self-reliant from day one and to trust in their own truth and intuition.

And secondly, I admire Andrea because her mindset is not one of competition and that is something she has passed on to the practitioners. The Soul Realignment community has a nice feel to it – one of cooperation – because we all understand that people choose the practitioner who resonates with them. We attract those people who are meant to work with us, so there is no competition between us.

Are There any Drawbacks to Soul Realignment?

Naturally, I have stated a lot of positives in this article because Soul Realignment is something that has really served me on my path. I think it would have taken me years to work out some of the spiritual concepts Soul Realignment introduced me to, if I’d be going it alone and so I am thankful that I found it. But of course, as with most things, there are a few aspects of Soul Realignment that I don’t like as much and I think it’s fair to talk about those also in this article.

One thing that was difficult for me to take about Soul Realignment at first was that some parts of it are a bit ‘out there’. Although I am a witchy woman at heart, I come from an educational background that is most definitely structured, rigid and left-brained. I was trained to critique and use my logic. I trained in the humanities (French and Spanish.) Not the sciences, but still - you get the picture.

So, when I started studying Soul Realignment, I freaked out a little, because all of the information on soul groups was a bit like something out of Star Wars. I am a really down-to-earth person (or at least I consider myself to be – my mum would disagree!) so I still do a double-take on the bizarreness of my life when I’m doing readings and telling people which star system they incarnated in originally. But over time, I’ve come to see just how accurate and useful all this soul group information is, so I’d never discard it even if it is a bit wacky.

There are a couple of other aspects to Soul Realignment that I’ve discarded to some extent over time. One of those aspects is the idea of negative and positive souls. Soul Realignment teaches us to categorize souls who come to us for readings into two groups – positive and negative souls. Positive souls are souls who receive energy from Source and negative souls are souls who have decided they no longer want to receive energy from Source and instead have to steal it from positive souls by creating negativity in them. It is actually necessary to make this distinction from a healing point of view because quite simply there are some souls who do not seek healing on a soul-level (negative or de-evolving souls) and so we can’t work with those clients if they are brought to us by a family member. (I never get clients like that anyway.)

But the distinction between negative and positive souls is one that (in my opinion) is not as black and white as Soul Realignment teaches, so I discard it to some extent. I definitely feel that there is more to it than a black and white distinction and I do have my own theories on this, some of which are expressed in this article. But this is my personal opinion (which evolves based on my experiences – it has certainly evolved even since I wrote that article.)

I think it’s very healthy to take what resonates with you about a course and discard what doesn’t – I’d advise doing that with all courses and material. Apply your own discernment and find your own truth, otherwise it becomes too cult-ish when you can’t think for yourself or form your own opinion.

So there you have it. Soul Realignment gets my personal seal of approval as a course for learning to do professional readings for others.

To sum up, Soul Realignment is probably suitable for you if…

You are a professional intuitive who wants more tools to help others transform their lives and heal the negativity and limiting “stuff” you can see in clients that stops them from creating the lives they want.

You are a professional intuitive who wants to be able to give more precise and detailed information about client’s life purpose, past lives, essence and career.

You have never given readings before but you are really drawn to helping others grow, heal and transform their lives.

You are drawn to becoming a professional intuitive but you want a structured approach which will give you accuracy and confidence from the start.

You can also leave a comment if you are looking to become a professional intuitive and you want some people to practice on. I’m sure some readers of this blog would be happy to be reading guinea pigs for any budding psychics out there.

In the last ten years, I have had a series of relationships with men, some of those relationships were amazing and healing and fun. A few of them were dark and taught me the importance of finding and speaking my truth and having a strong inner centre.

So, even though I feel inspired to write this blog post, it’s ironic that I write this because I am no expert at relationships and how to maintain a wonderful long-term one. I am not going to beat myself up over that as I know that relationships, like all things, are a reflection of our inner being and seeing as ages 16-25 does not tend to be a committed or solid phase of life (at least it wasn’t in my life – it was full of change, turmoil and transitions) it was natural that my relationships reflected that.

I will relate to you a couple of lessons that I have learned in the last ten years in my relationships. Maybe if you’re in the same phase of life as me you will relate to some of them and if you’re ahead of me, they will seem like old and buried lessons to you and wisdom you’ve long since integrated.

At the end of this article, I will talk more about the advice that Spirit has passed on in my readings this week about how to become a better vibrational match for a partner if you’re single and will link in some of what I’ve learned along the way.

Here’s a potted history of my life lessons so far in the area of relationships.

The Older Guy

One of the scariest experiences I ever had in a relationship was an experience where I abandoned my own intuition and ignored my perceptions in a short-lived relationship with a guy who was much older than me. In some ways, I know what it feels like to empty your head and join a cult because that was how it felt to be in a relationship with this person. This person was someone who redefined everything about my life and told me how things were. He told me constantly that my perceptions were wrong. I allowed myself to be manipulated a lot as he presented his perceptions as clearer and more truthful than mine.

Lesson learned: that your perceptions are a gift, essential to your intuition and ALWAYS valid. They give you a solid sense of self.

You know those times when you’ve sought confirmation in psychic readings of what you already know – you didn’t need that confirmation, did you? You were right on. In fact, you know more than anyone, when it comes to you and your stuff.

(Incidentally, this lesson was one of the most powerful lessons that I could have learned to prepare myself for my career as an intuitive – it really strengthened my third eye and my intuition.)

If you let go of your perceptions and allow someone else to tell you how it is and tell you who you are, you are losing your own precious truth and you are not in integrity.

Perceiving what you do, trusting in your perceptions and voicing them confidently (even if others don’t agree with them) builds your inner core, which is essential for a relationship that is not going to make your heart (or your third eye) bleed.

The ‘Let-me-abuse-you-because-you-need-it’ guy

At one point, I had a relationship with a dark and brooding Scorpio type. Seeing as I love(d) dark and brooding Scorpio types (especially ones with those intense Scorpio eyes) I couldn’t resist him. But our relationship became abusive after a while.

One of the reasons why I stayed with him for the time that I did was because he was my mentor, helped me with my business and when I first moved to London – scared shitless – he put me up. He told me that in order to learn to overcome my pride, I needed to learn to accept abuse.

I actually put up with it for a while because I believed I needed his help more than I needed to feel safe and valued. His help translated to financial help and mentoring that I believed I needed in order to succeed.

In the end, I presented him with an ultimatem: stop abusing me or I will not see you again.

He couldn’t resist treating me badly. I didn’t see him again.

Lesson learned: If you are putting up with abuse because you think you are getting something out of it, then the other person isn’t hurting you – you are, and it takes a lot to recover from that because it represents a betrayal of the self.

Other lesson learned: No-one can actually give you anything. You create everything in your life. You are the source for you. So, if you’re making a pact with someone that compromises your integrity and makes you feel uncomfortable, then you’re shooting yourself in the foot. That is because everything you create around you is created through you – not through anyone else. Your world is a reflection of your inner being. You effect change from the inside out.

Even though this guy helped me a lot with my business, I really got momentum going when we split up and I struck out on my own.

Bottom line with this is: you manifest the people around you too, so don’t give your power away to the relationships or the people in your life. You hold the power to create new ones and create something different.

The ‘two unskilled empaths together = codependency’ relationship

This relationship was with an amazing person that I’m still friends with.

In this relationship, I learned what happens when the two of you sort of merge in a codependent way – when your dreams and goals sort of merge. When your needs merge. Is that what ‘losing yourself’ feels like? You know that feeling where there is not much space or room to move in a relationship, emotionally, when you’re always with one another and so you begin to retreat in a panicky sort of way because two empaths tend to become one entity, looking out for one another in a ‘I feel your every feeling’ kind of way, constantly feeling like they need to fix and help one another. Empaths, you know what I’m referring to. The rest of you will just think that’s weird. We both learned a lot from this relationship.

Lesson learned: there needs to be space in a relationship, as well as intimacy.

Also, you have to look after yourself first, and don’t expect someone else to put you first or fulfil your needs (especially when you haven’t voiced them) because you know what you need better than anyone.

Other lessons learned:

Don’t ask boys out. It scares them off

How to Become a Vibrational Match for the Relationship You Want

I integrated so many of these lessons over the last few months and noted that most of my relationships had been with commitment-phobic people in the past.

I decided to embark on a ritual where I commit to myself, as I wanted to see more commitment and stability in myself and in future relationships and in order to get there, I realized I needed to create that state in me.

I committed to the following:

Love – loving myself no matter what.

Finances – being responsible with my money and financial decisions; not spending more than I have.

Self-care and nurture – keeping health commitments; taking time out when I’m tired.

Accepting myself – acknowledging that I’m not here to adhere to anyone’s standard of ‘perfect’.

Having a Life – cultivating work/life balance – a big one for me as I do love my work.

Encouragement – not allowing my inner voice to turn negative and squash my good intentions or dreams.

Trust – keeping my commitments and promises to myself. Following through on my word.

I also added:

Commitment to my own truth and commitment to voice my perceptions, even if other people aren’t going to like it.

Commitment to my own power – remembering that all things in my life are manifested from me – and that hooking into a partner as a source of abundance or power creates misery.

Commitment to my own needs and space – remembering that some space in my life and in my relationships serves me.

These are just my commitments so depending on your nature you might not resonate with them.

I actually came across a ritual in a book where you buy red roses and toss them into the ocean to symbolize your commitment to yourself. I felt like a massive numpty going into the florist’s shop and asking for nine red roses, knowing I was going to toss them into the ocean.

Luckily when I drove to the beach (The aptly named ‘Monkey Bay’), it turned out I was all alone to toss my roses into the ocean – one for each commitment.

Beach here in Marlborough, NZ

My dramatic gesture of tossing the rose into the ocean backfired when the tide came in and left my roses on the sand. I kept having to toss them back in.

The interesting thing about doing this commitment ritual a few months ago is that I noticed how I followed through on my word and promises to myself much more. My self-care began to deepen; I somehow became more serious and responsible in my relationship with MYSELF.

What you can take out of this:

If you’re in a relationship that you want to improve…

What do you want to see more of in your relationship? – more trust, acceptance or space? Can you commit to creating more of that in/for yourself? After all, that is how you will see more of it in your relationship. If you wanted, you could even create a dramatic ritual where you toss something symbolic into the ocean and hope your sacred ritual isn’t ruined by the uncooperative Pacific ocean.

If you’re not in a relationship but want to create a good one, why not make some commitments to yourself? What were the lessons you learned from past relationships? How can you integrate them and honour them for future relationships?

Did any of my lessons learned speak to you?

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this – one of my favourite topics.
