Abstract

The Arctic cryosphere is a sentinel of climate change. Over recent decades, sea-ice extent and volume have declined dramatically, while the Greenland Ice Sheet and Arctic glaciers are losing mass at accelerating rates. The prospect of a seasonally ice-free “blue” Arctic Ocean within the coming decades represents a critical threshold in the Earth system, yet its consequences for marine ecosystems and the communities that depend on them remain uncertain.

Paleo-records provide essential context for anticipating these changes. In this talk, I will present an overview of recent work reconstructing Arctic cryosphere variability throughout the Holocene and its impacts on marine ecosystems. This includes studies of Greenland Ice Sheet runoff and its influence on fjord productivity, the sensitivity of Pikialasorsuaq (the North Water polynya) to climate change, and collaborative research on the stability of the Last Ice Area in the Lincoln Sea.

Traditionally, such reconstructions have relied on microfossil and biogeochemical proxies, particularly from the sedimentary record of single-celled eukaryotes such as diatoms, dinoflagellates, and foraminifera. Given recent advances in genomics, we are now able to explore sedimentary ancient DNA (sedaDNA) records of entire ecosystems and reconstruct past dynamics at unprecedented detail. These developments place us amid a “proxy revolution”. I will present examples of our work on marine sedimentary ancient DNA as a proxy for sea ice and discuss its potential to simultaneously capture environmental and biodiversity changes across Quaternary timescales.
