Perfect Lesson Plan

As teachers, we all want to create the PERFECT LESSON PLAN! However, this can be such a challenging and time consuming endeavor. So, I am going to go over some key ideas and processes that you must consider when creating your lesson plans.

It doesn't matter what your lesson plan is about. What really matters is how you present the lesson to your students and how they receive the information. An effective lesson plan is determined by student outcomes and if they retain the information provided in the lesson.

First Things First...BEHAVIOR!

Make sure that your classroom procedures are very clear and precise and show somewhere in the room. There is no use starting your lesson plan and expecting students to be engaged when behavior and discipline is not under the control of the teacher.
Directions for the lesson need to be very clear before the lesson begins. Students need to know what to expect from you as the teacher and they need to know what you expect of them.

Now, let's discuss the lesson plan. The perfect lesson must consist of 4 stages:

Lesson Plan Stage 1: Pre-Lesson - During the pre-lesson, let students know WHAT they will be learning and WHY they will be learning this new information. Go ahead, write it on the board. Show students exactly what they are about to learn. No sense in keeping it a secret. Also, let them know what is going to happen AFTER the lesson. (This will prepare them for Stage 3 and 4.) In order for students to be fully engaged in the lesson, they must have a sense of purpose and meaning. We see this in learning a new language. Most of us took Spanish or some language in high school for two year and can't remember much. Throw us in Spain for two weeks with a purpose and meaning to learn the language and we will be sure to retain much information.
Lesson Plan Stage 2: Lesson - The lesson must be started with basic knowledge, background knowledge, or a reminder of what was learned the day before. Then, move to higher level thinking. As you are presenting the new information to the students, it is ESSENTIAL that you are excited about it! When I am teaching a lesson, I make it my duty to walk around the class while talking, bending down and getting in kids faces to pump them up, and just making learning fun! Many times I would talk in a made-up voice or character, or turned a statement or sentence into a little song or jingle...even if it didn't rhyme. The kids loved it!
Lesson Plan Stage 3: Post-Lesson - Make sure during Lesson Plan Stage 1, you let students know that there would be a whole group/small group activity to practice the new skill. During the post-lesson, students should be working independently or with a small group to solve problems or practice the skill that was just taught. Be sure to give students CLEAR directions about these follow up assignments, including what they should do when they are finished. (Hand it in, show the teacher, work on something else)
Lesson Plan Stage 4: Post-Post-Lesson - Yes...a post-post-lesson. There will always be at least one student who will always finish the classwork really fast. You need to be prepared for this if you want to create the perfect lesson plan. Before the lesson begins, during stage 1, just make sure students know what they should do when the lesson is over, and they have finished the classwork. As a teacher, you could have a list on the board of options that they could choose from. (Read a Book for AR, Write in their journal, Do other homework, etc) It is important though that you don't encourage getting done fast. If students have the option to play games on the computer when they are finished, they will just speed through it.

Please Sit Down

How many times per day do you find yourself saying, "Please Sit Down," "Sit Down Please," or pretty much lose your cool and say, "Sit Down and Be Quiet!" Hopefully you don't get to that point. I wanted to take some time to go over some classroom procedures that deal with students who just LOVE to get out of their seat. If you really want your kids to sit in their seat, simply follow these recommendations and you will be very satisfied. Some of these ideas are from teachers who are fans on the Have Fun Teaching facebook page.

Tips for Teachers: Students Getting Out of Their Seat

Make sure your procedures are very clear and show somewhere in the room. Sometimes, students just forget that they are supposed to be sitting. I know you're thinking, "Well, I tell them constantly." It might be a nice idea to be able to point to a poster or sign that reminds them that sitting nicely is a classroom procedure and they are to be held accountable.
For a primary age children, try to draw the child's attention on the activity on the table. For instance, when using playdough say to the child, "Kim lets make lots worms and snakes using this playdough." I will be sitting on my chair and in the process encourage the child to sit on his/her chair. In between the activity be sure to praise the child for sitting still in the chair. And of course at the end of the activity reward the child with a sticker or felt pen star for sitting still. -Imali Chanzu

I think using the reward and praising strategy always works. If someone is sitting still I always praise him/ her and the others will soon try to imitate the right behavior...don't forget to praise them too. -Anna Lynch

100 Reasons to be a Teacher

Hello fellow teachers and young adults! This blog post is to remind us why we are teaching and some reasons why you would want to be a teacher. If you are on the job hunt and not sure which career path to take, you may want to consider a teaching job. Teaching can be the most rewarding and demanding job there is. Some of these reasons are meant to be funny, but hold some truth as well.

Scheduling

Consistent Schedule – The school day starts and ends at very specific times. No sudden surprises that you have to work the opening or closing shift!
Summer – What other career can provide a 2½ month break and then a chance to restart with a new group.
Winter Break – Guaranteed Christmas and New Years with family and friends. No begging the boss for time off or praying you get to line up your vacation with your significant other’s. Guaranteed time off!
Minimum Days – What other job has specific days or weeks where you only work 4 hours, but get paid for a full day!
Sub finder – Many districts allow you to call in sick to a computer system. No need to practice your sick voice before calling in.
Holidays and Weekends – Having this time off is a gift that teachers take for granted too often.
Pay scale – A teacher can improve their salary for each year of experience that they work. Also additional education builds your salary as well.

In Classroom/School

Set the pace – A teacher has a chance to have a quiet day with the kids doing independent work, or they can shift gears to having great group conversations and running around the classroom.
Change the topic when you get bored – Don’t like the topic, change it! There is no reason why you can’t skip around to make sense and make sure the students are engaged.
Have a Daily Adventure – No one knows what the day shall bring. Bring it On!
Laugh Daily – You will
Cry With Your Students – You will
Share in Special Moments – You will
Be Open and Honest – The great ones are
Be the First One to Know Something – The day a student runs to your classroom to make sure you know the news first – you will remember why you were meant to teach
Demonstrate Respect – Students must know what it is and feel that they have yours. They will then be respectful in return.
Helping Students Handle Failure – It’s hard for students to understand that failure is part of life and that they must learn from it and not give up.
Have a movie day – Really tired from the night before? Stick in Stand and Deliver. The students are still seeing something of academic value and you get to sit and enjoy the quiet.
Fieldtrips – Although there is a great deal of stress that comes with moving students around a distant land, there is something to be said for getting out of the classroom every once in a while.
Assemblies – They can be annoying or just enough relief to make it through the day.
Helpers – A good classroom teacher barely has to lift a finger. Students always want to help in any way possible.
Bell Schedule – Just when you start to get irritated, that blessed sound comes to let you know it will all be ok
Tenure – Great job security unparalleled by most other professions.
Student made gifts – The best gift a teacher can receive is a heartfelt card written by a student
Return Visits -As a teacher, I was always thrilled when the kids came back to see me. I felt that I really made a difference.
Tracking Progress – The best way to know that you are on track and making a difference
Freedom of Self Expression – Although there are many things a teacher is responsible for, understanding individual styles allows for the wiggle room necessary to bring your own personality out in your lessons.
Stealing – Don’t worry! Teachers lovingly steal each other’s lessons every day. It is our way of sharing and the culture that is built into the teaching profession.
Personal Chef – Most school cafeterias come with amazing cafeteria managers who make meals especially for their teacher clientele.

Making a Difference

Personal Inspiration – I am inspired by every student I meet, the challenges they face, and how they work to overcome them
Valuing the Individual – A teacher is given the opportunity to prove why each and every child is special and has something to contribute.
Students – Molding Minds – The age old idea of teaching someone something they need to know
Students – Creating Critical Thinkers – Allows a student to look beyond what they are told and create their own opinion
Students – Developing Skills – Creating the basic skills that students need for survival and competing for jobs
Students – Coach and Motivator – A teacher is not responsible for teaching students to just remember, they must let the students know that they are wonderful beings and can compete with anyone. Building self-esteem is part of teaching the child.
Teaching Moment – All teachers know that beautiful moment when all the plans come together, the lesson is learned, and the students take personal responsibility for their own actions
Stopping the Cycle – Nothing is more of a high than taking a student who is on track for gangs and dropping out, and giving them the motivation to be successful
Counseling – A teacher is also a friend, an open ear, and a shoulder to cry on. A child cannot learn when their mind is distracted with fear or sadness.
Be Happy to go to Work – You get to choose what you want to do and you are allowed to start fresh every day.
Stay Young at Heart – No matter your age, you have a true connection with a younger generation
To Teach Future Leaders – Some people are born leaders; others need opportunities to learn to lead.
