During the last weekend of September, Richie Guest-DJed on Hair Nation. It was, of course, all pre-recorded and his part was only about 10 minutes total, but it was an enjoyable hour.

Soraia Live on Toil Rock Radio

Thanks to CatteSambora for the information below, and the stream of this Soraia event.

Soraia was live on a 3-hour radio show last night. They talked, played, and previewed songs from the new record for two hours (there were station breaks/music in between).

Some really fun banter and good interviews, including quite a bit with Obie. He talked about how he came to work with Soraia, how Jon got involved, the record business, recording, touring, etc...

He also talked quite a bit about Jon and Hugh (he and Hugh played in bands together back in the early 60s and are neighbors). And about wormholes and "pornographic food."

Most of the night was focused on songwriting, her musical history, and plans for the future. She took a few calls and web chat questions as well.

Sue was asked, but noncommittal about touring with Bon Jovi in 2013... but didn't rule it out. Toward the end of the interview it gets pretty hard-R-rated (mostly DJ/host comments), so be warned.

Aftermath: Track by Track Review

No, not mine. Found on Grande-Rock:

The album begins with an absolutely amazing, sexy little rocking ballad/song of longing, called “Every Road Leads Home To You”. It’s a very sincere and instantly likable song, that would fit like a glove in a BJ album. Richie’s vocals are in good shape and a little lead, he lets rip, works wonders too.

“Sugar Daddy” is a little quirkier, more modern, grittier, grungier and them vocals come quite heavily processed, there are lots of na-na-na-na’s and a very cabaret like, sleazy atmosphere, but somehow, the song ain’t bad!

“Weathering The Storm” is a bluesy song that builds up nicely and explodes, with a beautiful, urgent and anthemic chorus.

“Burn The Candle Down” is a very raw, jam like composition, with mulch-tracked vocals, that however sound weird, because of the effect, used. I’m guessing, that unless this was done, completely live (which it sounds as if it might have been) and kept as is, a lead vocal, with some backups, would have worked a little better. Not to say it’s a bad track, it just sounds “different”.

“Taking a Chance on The Wind” has a more southern/country touch but also very strong pop sensibilities. None of the two trends dominates the song, which allows it to bloom, into a fantastic lead and then to come to a beautiful full-fledged conclusion.

“Nowadays” is another “raw” and possibly live recorded song as well. It’s an up-tempo rocker, with an interesting and slightly beatlesque vibe and an uplifting if not a little too simple chorus.

“Learning How to Fly (Broken Wing)” is another up-tempo rocker, that wouldn’t feel out of place in a Springsteen album, complete with a passionately sung chorus and great guitar lines.

“Forgiveness Street” is a very delicate, “wounded” blues-tinged ballad, with big slide melodies and an underlying sense of greatness. There’s some really nice guitar work here, but it’s mixed, comparatively low, to allow the vocals to shine. Great song though!

“Walk Beside You” is a very temperate and beautiful ballad, only Richie and an acoustic and minimal percussion for the most part really and it’s beautiful. The song picks up the pace, sometime around the middle and even has some electricity, during the build to its celebratory conclusion. This one, could have been a huge, BJ power ballad, with the proper orchestration and Jon’s vocals over it.

For “Seven Years Gone”, Richie opts for a deeper, but stronger vocal, tone. It starts as another “wounded” ballad but it’s also very powerful and in your face at the same time. Then around the third minute it totally, takes an inexplicable guitar hero direction then it mellows and then it fizzles out, with more beautiful guitars… but while I like almost every part of the song, I do have to say I’m quite puzzled about how the whole thing evolves past the third minute. I’m pretty sure I’d enjoy it more, had it been a little differently arranged.

“You Can Only Get So High” is a bit of a personal apology from Richie, possibly addressed to himself and the things/people that matter to him. It starts with only a piano and vocals, to later become, fully orchestrated. It’s sincere and really heartwarming, to hear the lyrics and ponder their meaning. Bravo.

“World” is a really, bizarre semi-acoustic piece, that “borrows” a rather large and central piece of its melody line, by Phantom’s “Think of Me”, which is a little odd, but still, it’s a nice “adaption”, with its “universal” poignant message ‘n all!

“Backseat Driver” is a jivin’ lil tune, in the vein of up-tempo ELO, that appears to be closing the album and while it’s a great piece of work, it feels a little odd, tacked at the very end of the album, after a whole bunch of slower songs.

Soraia put up a podcast yesterday on Unclaimed Bands. It's free on iTunes (or you can download from CatteSambora's MediaFire here), and features an interview with Sue and Travis and two roughs of songs that will be on the new record. Here's what Sue posted on Facebook:

Download for free the newest podcast with Soraia! It's an interview done about a month and a half ago at Dobb's with Sean Gallagher, and we play two roughs from it....these are not the final products for the record...but damn close...so go download and take a listen.

Sue talks a little about writing with Jon, opening for Bon Jovi, meeting with Little Steven Van Zandt, production on the record, how she chose the songs for the record, a little bit of band history and dynamics, the dedication and support of their fans, and info about the new record.

She also talks a little about the song "Against the Wall", which she co-wrote with Jon, and how she hopes it connects with people. She posted lyrics for on FB a few weeks ago:

Travis also talks some about the band making it through challenges and sticking together. He's very sweet and funny.

Wanted Wednesday: January 5, 1991 (Nagoya, Japan)

So I have a boot that's purported to be from "today" back in 1990 (Wembley) but I didn't want to start off the new year with a "Maybe this is right". The bootleg I have from "Wembley" has 23 tracks. Any setlist I've found for that date (and admittedly, I didn't look more than 10 minutes) has only a handful of songs listed. If someone has a 'real' setlist from this date, that'd be great.

Putting a pin in THAT one for now, today's track is still from This Week back in 1991, just tomorrow, not today.

There's no long intro; the track starts in with those four notes we all know so well. It sounds (to me anyway) that it's a little slow; just half a beat or so, so initially I thought the boot was damaged. But Jon's voice sounds just right, so I guess it's just a slower, lazier version.

It's alright (sorry wrong song) -- the lazy strumming brings to mind the guys kicking back on a couple of high-top stools just leaning into every strum. A very nice mental image, if I do say so myself.

What can I say? I love the puppy years. Love the years when Richie didn't care if he played a hundred zillion extra notes, and gave us long intros. This intro is very similar to the show we featured last week -- but seeing as how THIS show only occurred 10 days later, I'm not surprised :)

The gut-clencher moment in this one? Jon's little breathless parting remarks...

I swear to god I'd drive all night long...through the pouring rain...the snow...just to get back home. Just to get back home. Just to get back home.

Wanted Wednesday: December 6, 1989 - Holland

I was looking for a boot from "today" but don't have one. So you have a "yesterday" post. This one has great clarity for an "older" boot. I just love the puppy era, especially the NJ years.

This track has a gorgeous long intro (around 4 minutes), and the audience sings most of the first verse after a lead-in from Jon. Richie's voice pops in to tell us he's been everywhere, standing tall... just all around goodness.
